Abstract:The series of textbooks of the Integrated Course of New College English (Second Edition) was conceived at the end of the last century. The first edition was published at the beginning of the new century and the second in 2010. Due to the long period of time, the selection of materials in the textbook is not well integrated with the localized Chinese culture and is missing content closely related to traditional Chinese culture and Civic Education, etc. The paper puts forward constructive suggestions on how to use the Integrated Course in an innovative way. Firstly, from the perspective of moral education, it is suggested that the moral education elements in the textbook be sorted out and matched with socialist core values and that the ideological and political education of the curriculum is achieved through explicit interpretation of the unit themes and implicit infiltration into language ontology teaching. Secondly, through teaching for learning and learning for research, students are encouraged to participate in innovative and entrepreneurial projects for university students, realizing the extension of university English classroom teaching to extra-curricular research, deepening the content of the teaching materials, and thus cultivating students' innovative thinking and entrepreneurial abilities.

Abstract:Abstract English teaching materials serve as a critical vehicle for instruction, with well-designed materials fostering positive learning habits and interests among students. This study employs an ecological philosophy approach and multimodal discourse analysis to examine the modal shifts in college English textbooks. It utilizes the BiFPN network model to capture image features within these materials. Furthermore, the TF-IDF method extracts key terms from the textbook text, while the integration of a CNN-GRU model facilitates the classification of these terms. Additionally, this research introduces relevant computational formulas from text readability theory to evaluate the difficulty levels of these textbooks. The analysis focuses on the “New Vision College English Textbook” series, volumes Compulsory 1 through Compulsory 4. It explores the semantic relationships between text and graphics, chapter-specific reading challenges, and overall text readability indices. Findings indicate that the average proportion of graphic-text equality relations stands at 58.30%, with the highest occurrence of images depicting detailed relationships totaling 217. The Grade Level index for Compulsory 4 reaches 1.61, signifying a high complexity, whereas the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) score for Compulsory 1 peaks at 75.42, suggesting easier comprehension. In contrast, Compulsory 2 and Compulsory 4 exhibit lower readability scores. Through multimodal discourse analysis, the study delineates the varying difficulty levels across college English textbooks, advocating for a graded approach to textbook development that aligns with students’ evolving competencies. This strategy is poised to significantly boost students’ engagement and facilitate more effective learning.
A Comparative Study of Chinese High School Multimodal English Textbooks under the "Double Reduction" Policy

Abstract:High school English textbooks play a pivotal role in the English learning effectiveness of high school students. Following the implementation of the "Double Reduction" policy in Mainland China in 2021, there have been significant changes in the English learning approaches of high school students, necessitating adjustments in the content of English textbooks. This study selected two widely used high school English textbooks published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, specifically the English (New Standard) (Volume 1, 2004 edition) and the General Senior High School English Textbook (Volume 1, 2022 edition). Based on the theory of visual grammar, a multimodal comparative analysis was conducted. The findings suggest that the latter is more suitable for first-year students in high schools after "Double Reduction". The former requires improvements in content difficulty, learning objectives, intercultural communication, and media technology utilization. This research offers insights for textbook compilation and enhancement, recommending an emphasis on the practical arrangement of English knowledge and the cultivation of students' intercultural competencies.

Abstract:Teaching materials are a bridge connecting teachers, students and knowledge, and they play an irreplaceable role in ensuring the quality of education and promoting the all-round development of students. Among all the courses in the basic stage of English majors, the Integrated English Courses occupies a large proportion in the English majors' curriculum. And the textbook for Integrated English 2, Contemporary College English: Intensive Reading 2, is widely used in colleges and universities in China. This study collected the data from questionnaire and interview to assess the Contemporary College English Intensive Reading 2 (Third Edition), in order to gauge student perceptions of its components and identify the textbook's strengths, weaknesses, and usage challenges. The analysis indicates that while the textbook is largely effective in meeting educational goals and is appreciated for its content and organization, there are areas for improvement, particularly in the underuse of audio-visual resources and the need for differentiated support for students facing difficulties. To enhance the textbook, this study recommends the integration of AI in language learning, the use of interactive technologies, and the flipped classroom approach to foster a more dynamic and personalized learning experience. These adaptations aim to prepare English major students for modern challenges while maintaining the textbook's relevance and efficacy.
A Study on the Effectiveness of College English Teaching Based on Content-Based Instruction Teaching Philosophy

Abstract:With the development of world globalization, English plays an increasingly important role. English is the international language used in foreign communication, so English learning has become more and more important. Therefore, the innovation and research of College English teaching has become a hot spot in the field of education. Relevant research results are also constantly updated, but there are no ideas and methods that can adapt to the actual teaching. To improve students' English level and cultivate excellent English talents for the development of the country, the CBI teaching concept aims to completely combine language learning with subject learning, so as to get rid of the artificial separation between language teaching and subject teaching in most educational backgrounds. This study constructs and implements the college English teaching model based on CBI teaching concept from an empirical perspective. In the teaching, it focuses on the theme content that students are interested in. Teachers take explaining the theme content as a means, use content teaching to drive language teaching, and realize the purpose of language teaching. The experimental class adopts CBI teaching concept, the blank class adopts ordinary teaching methods, and the control class adopts task-based teaching concept. Through one semester of teaching, the teaching effect of three classes is evaluated. Under the evaluation of teachers, the full score of CBI teaching effectiveness is 66. Under the evaluation of students, the full score of CBI teaching effectiveness is 64, which is the highest. This shows that the effectiveness of teaching under CBI is higher than task-based teaching and general teaching. The results showed that the average score of the pretest control class was the highest, the average score of the middle test experimental class was the highest, an increase of 4.7 points, and the average score of the post-test experimental class was the highest, an increase of 112.2 points, whereas the scores of the control group and the blank group were 108.7 and 104.3 points, respectively. This shows that the learning effect of CBI teaching concept is higher than task-based teaching and general teaching. Therefore, college English teaching based on CBI teaching concept has high effect, can improve students' English knowledge and ability, and can be promoted in college English teaching.

Abstract:Textbooks are an integral part of teaching and learning in Chinese College English classroom.However,they rarely provide adequate pragmatic information for students to successfully develop their pragmatic competence.This study will examine four College English(New) Listening and Speaking textbooks to find out the nature of pragmatic materials and tasks included in the textbooks.The findings indicate that there is a dearth of pragmatic information contained in the Listening and Speaking textbooks and the variety of pragmatic information is limited.Most of the metapragmatic explanations are simple.

Abstract:Purpose: This study puts forward the BECI system under the background of Chinese new liberal arts construction and the guidance of postmodern philosophy and the blended teaching mode in order to sustainably improve students’ Business English Reading and Writing ability and cultivate Business English compound talents who meet the market demand. Theoretical framework: The research makes use of post-modern philosophy and blended teaching mode to explore the BECI system. Design/ methodology/ approach: The BECI system teaching mode integrates traditional teaching and digital teaching, and uses information technology, online and offline, multi-modal teaching and process assessment mechanism to comprehensively improve students’ participation and subjective learning status, and cultivate their good study habits. Findings: BECI system is market-demand-oriented, student-centered and teacher-scaffolded, which includes business knowledge, English knowledge, cross-cultural knowledge and ideological and political knowledge, and advocates the mutual promotion of Business English Reading (input) and Business English Writing (output). Research, Practice & Social Implications: The research not solely solves some problems, such as complicated teaching content and low learning efficiency of students, Business English Reading and Writing facing with, but also endows learners with the sustainable Business English Reading and Writing ability and good study habits.

Abstract:This study is aimed at researching learning plans of Senior High School English textbooks based on the big concept, promoting the overall English teaching design of Senior High School, and encouraging students to carry out deep study. It mainly uses discourse analysis method for English unit teaching designs, arranges the content of unit teaching reasonably, and promotes the quality of English teaching in high schools through a complete unit theme teaching. This study, by sorting out the connotation, characteristics and relevant literature of big concept, takes Unit 4, Compulsory 1 of New Yilin Senior High School English textbooks as an example to explore the overall teaching design of units pointing to deep study. Findings of the research include: learning plans of Senior High School English textbooks based on the big concept makes English teaching from scattered to interrelated, promoting students’ deep study, and implementing core English literacy; learning plans based on the big concept are quite beneficial to the development of both teachers and students.

Abstract:In English classroom teaching, teaching material is an important carrier of knowledge, bearing the responsibility of transferring knowledge to students systematically, and playing an indispensable role in teaching, so the study of teaching material has important theoretical value and practical significance. Textbook preparation should be based on the curriculum standards stipulated in the curriculum objectives and curriculum content, the implementation of the concept of core literacy, to the theme as the guide, the use of real language materials, and can take into account the different ability levels of Chinese students, in line with their language learning rules.
