Abstract:Seven morphological parameters of hair were observed on the lanugo of a roe deer fetus 10 to 15 days before birth by linear eyepiece micrometer and optical microscope, which include hair density, hair length, medulla length, hair diameter, medulla diameter, scale pattern, and medullar pattern. Results indicate that the development of lanugo expresses temporal and spatial sequence, namely, hair occurs from head to tail. The hair density of different parts of the fetus is in the sequence of buttock, neck, back, abdomen, top heel from high to low, and hair diameter and medulla index of neck, back, and buttocks are markedly higher than those of abdomen and top heel(p>0.05). The average medulla index of abdomen and top heel with developed cortical stratum are 0.67, and the hair length and medulla length of abdomen are the longest, which are (7 146.5±713.0)μm and(5 150.0±652.8)μm, respectively. The scale pattern of the tip of the lanugo hair shaft is in flat-shaped. The function differentiation of lanugo morphology for different parts of the fetus makes preparations for protecting abdomen and limb and preventing mechanical damage effectively after birth.
