Abstract:We discuss the physics requirements of the ALICE PHOton Spectrometer (PHOS) and describe its main characteristics and structure. The beam test results of the PHOS show that PHOS is capable of detecting photons efficiently up to 100 GeV/c in ALICE.

Abstract:The photon spectrometer (PHOS) in the ALICE experiment at LHC is a PbWO4 crystal based electromagnetic calorimeter, dedicated to measuring photons, π°'s and η's over a broad pT range from about 100 MeV/c to 100 GeV/c with the best possible energy and position resolution. The front-end electronics of the PHOS is thus required to cover a large dynamic range, to achieve a timing resolution better than ∼ 2 ns in order to discriminate against 1-2 GeV/c (anti-)neutrons, and to provide high pT trigger to select rare high pT events. In this paper, we present the full PHOS readout system, including the avalanche photo-diode, the low noise charge sensitive preamplifier, the 32 channel front-end electronics card, the trigger region unit and the trigger OR module. Results from PHOS commissioning with beam particles and cosmic rays will also be presented to address the performance of the PHOS readout electronics.

Abstract:The photon spectrometer (PHOS) in the ALICE experiment at LHC is dedicated to measuring photons, π0's and η's in a broad pT range from about 100MeV/c to 100GeV/c, providing the best possible energy and position resolution in order to narrow the π0 and η mass peaks and thus to increase the signal to background ratio. The front-end electronics (FEE) of the PHOS is thus required to cover a large dynamic range, to have a timing resolution better than ∼2ns in order to discriminate against 1–2GeV/c (anti-)neutrons, and to provide high pT trigger to select rare high pT events. In addition, to equalize the gains of individual detector channels, it is desired that the PHOS FEE can regulate the bias voltage of APD. In this paper, we will present the performance and status of the 32-channel low noise front-end electronics for the PHOS with a dynamic range of 14bits. Measurements with LED pulse at laboratory and results from beam test with the first PHOS module at T10 of the CERN PS show that its performance fulfills the PHOS requirements.

Abstract:The ALICE Photon Spectrometer (PHOS) has been designed to measure the photon spectrum produced in pp and AA collisions at LHC over a broad transverse momentum range from 0.5–100 GeV/c. We present a study on the matching of charged tracks, detected by the ALICE central tracking detectors, with clusters of hit PHOS elements. Matching efficiency and contamination due to false matches have been deduced for charged pions, muons and electrons. The study indicates also that material from other detectors in front of PHOS disturbs the photon detection.

Abstract:The ALICE experiment is optimized to study the properties of hot quark–gluon plasma produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. One of the electromagnetic calorimeters of ALICE, the Photon Spectrometer (PHOS), is designed for measuring direct photons and neutral mesons spectra. The possibility of increasing the working area of the PHOS detector by using PbWO 4 crystals of the CMS experiment is currently under consideration. It is possible to change the kinematic range by varying pseudo-rapidity, with a constant azimuthal angle, or azimutal angle, with the same pseudorapidity. It is also possible to move apart the detector modules without adding additional crystals. The proton collisions at energy of 13 TeV have been simulated by the Monte Carlo method using the PYTHIA software package. On the basis of the simulation results, it can be stated that for measurements in the low p T region increasing the azimuthal angle is the most optimum, since it becomes possible to investigate the p T region down to 25 MeV/ c for π 0 . This makes it possible to measure direct photons in the very low energy range (tens of MeV) and possibly verify the Low theorem for soft photons. At the same time, the available range for measuring—the η meson also significantly increases (down to 50 MeV/ c ).

Abstract:A large ion collider experiment(ALICE) at the large hadron collider(LHC) will be indicated to the detection of quark-gluon plasma(QGP) formed in heavy-ion collisions at TeV,and the exploration of the early universe as it was in the first few microseconds after its birth.A high precision electromagnetic calorimeter—ALICE photon spectrometer(PHOS),designed and produced by ALICE collaboration was described in the paper.It was used to detect the prompt-and decay-photons and diagnose the electromagnetic signal of quark-gluon plasma in lead-lead collisions at sNN= 5.5 TeV.The beam test results show that PHOS is capable to detect photons efficiently up to 0.5-100 GeV/c in ALICE.

Abstract:We present the two electromagnetic calorimeters of the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) experiment at LHC (Large Hadron Collider). One is the high-resolution PHOton Spectrometer (PHOS) made of lead tungsten crystals and the other is the ElectroMagnetic Calorimeter (EMCal), a Lead-Scintillator sampling calorimeter. They are dedicated to the measurement and identification of direct photons, light neutral mesons such as π0, η and ω(782), and jets emitted in proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions at the LHC energies. The PHOS is capable of precisely detecting photons with momentum range between 0.1 GeV/c and 100 GeV/c and the EMCal can extend the prompt photon and light neutral meson momentum measurement beyond 200 GeV/c. The objective of the study is to explore the physics of strongly interacting QCD matter under extreme conditions of energy density.

Abstract:ALICE,A Large Ion Collider Experiment,is dedicated to study the QCD matter at extreme high temperature and density to understand the Quark Gluon Plasma （QGP） and phase transition.High-transversemomentum photons and neutral mesons from the initial hard scattering of partons can be measured with ALICE calorimeters,PHOS （PHOton Spectrometer） and EMCAL （ElectroMagnetic CALorimeter）.Combing the additional central tracking detectors,the γ-jet and π 0-jet measurements thus can be accessed.These measurements offer us a sensitive tomography probe of the hot-dense medium generated in the heavy ion collisions.In this paper,high p T and photon physics is discussed and the ALICE calorimeters capabilities of high-transverse-momentum neutral mesons and γ-jet measurements are presented.

Abstract:The high efficiency, low-background, and single-photon detection with transition-edge sensors (TES) is making this type of detector attractive in widely different types of application. In this paper, we present first characterizations of a TES to be used in the Any Light Particle Search (ALPS) experiment searching for new fundamental ultra-light particles. Firstly, we describe the setup and the main components of the ALPS TES detector (TES, millikelvin-cryostat and SQUID read-out) and their performances. Secondly, we explain a dedicated analysis method for single-photon spectroscopy and rejection of non-photon background. Finally, we report on results from extensive background measurements. Considering an event-selection, optimized for a wavelength of $1064~{\rm nm}$, we achieved a background suppression of $\sim 10^{-3}$ with a $\sim 50~\%$ efficiency for photons passing the selection. The resulting overall efficiency was $23~\%$ with a dark count rate of $8.6 \cdot 10^{-3}~{\rm s}^{-1}$. We observed that pile-up events of thermal photons are the main background component.

Abstract:At Argonne National Laboratory, we are developing hard X-ray (2 to 20 keV) Transition Edge Sensor (TES) arrays for beamline science. The significantly improved energy resolution provided by superconducting detectors compared to semiconductor-based energy-dispersive detectors, but with better collection efficiency than wavelength-dispersive instruments, will enable greatly improved X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopic measurements. A prototype instrument with 24 microwave-frequency multiplexed pixels is now in testing at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) 1-BM beamline. Initial measurements show an energy resolution ten times better (150 eV compared to < 15 eV) than the silicon-drift detectors currently available to APS beamline users, and in particular demonstrate the ability to resolve closely-spaced emission lines in samples containing multiple transition metal elements, such as integrated circuits. Comparing fluorescence spectra of integrated circuits measured with our TESs at the beamline to those measured with silicon detectors, we find emission lines and elements largely hidden (e.g. Hf alongside Cu) from a semiconductor-based detector but well resolved by a TES. This directly shows the strengths of TES-based instruments in fluorescence mapping.

Abstract:The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will be a premier facility for exploring long-standing questions about the boundaries of the standard model. Acting in concert with the liquid argon time projection chambers underpinning the far detector design, the DUNE photon detection system will capture ultraviolet scintillation light in order to provide valuable timing information for event reconstruction. To maximize the active area while maintaining a small photocathode coverage, the experiment will utilize a design based on plastic light guides coated with a wavelength-shifting compound, along with silicon photomultipliers, to collect and record scintillation light from liquid argon. This report presents recent preliminary performance measurements of this baseline design and several alternative designs which promise significant improvements in sensitivity to low-energy interactions.

Abstract:This manuscript contains a detailed description of the PHOBOS experiment as it is configured for the Year 2001 running period. It is capable of detecting charged particles over the full solid angle using a multiplicity detector and measuring identified charged particles near mid-rapidity in two spectrometer arms with opposite magnetic fields. Both of these components utilize silicon pad detectors for charged particle detection. The minimization of material between the collision vertex and the first layers of silicon detectors allows for the detection of charged particles with very low transverse momenta, which is a unique feature of the PHOBOS experiment. Additional detectors include a time-of-flight wall which extends the particle identification range for one spectrometer arm, as well as sets of scintillator paddle and Cherenkov detector arrays for event triggering and centrality selection.

Abstract:In this contribution the latest measurements of real and virtual photons in Pb–Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV from the ALICE Collaboration are presented. The extracted photon spectra are compared to predictions from state-of-the-art models that explicitly include the whole evolution of the heavy-ion collision as well as measurements at lower energies. Experimental developments that in the future will help to extend the range and procession of the measurements are introduced before concluding with an outlook to possible future measurements at the LHC.

Abstract:In high energy hadron collisions, direct photons can be produced in various processes and are of particular interest to study the hot QCD medium since they escape it without being affected. In these proceedings are presented the latest ALICE experiment results concerning direct photon production in proton-proton (pp), proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions. All measurements agree with pQCD calculations at high transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) and show no direct photon excess at low $p_{\text{T}}$ in small systems while a low $p_{\text{T}}$ signal is found in central Pb-Pb collisions.

Thermal photon measurements at PHENIX

Abstract:Photons are emitted at all stages of relativistic heavy-ion collisions and do not interact with the medium strongly. With access to the versatility of RHIC, measurements of low momentum direct photons are made possible across different system size and beam energies. An excess of direct photons, above prompt photon production from hard scattering processes, is observed for a system size corresponding to $dN_{ch}/d\eta$ of 20-30, with a large azimuthal anisotropy and a characteristic dependence on collision centrality. After subtracting the prompt photon component, the inverse slope of the spectrum is continuously increasing with the effective temperature ranging from 250 MeV/c at $p_{T}$ of 1-2 GeV/c to about 400 MeV/c at 2-4 GeV/c. Within the experimental uncertainty, there is no indication of a system size dependence of the inverse slope. In this proceeding, results from Au+Au collisions from the PHENIX experiment will be presented.

Abstract:The ALICE calorimeters PHOS and EMCal (including its extension DCal) are based on Avalanche Photo-Diode (APD) photosensors with Charge Sensitive Preamplifiers (CSPs) for readout of the scintillating elements. A new CSP has been developed on the basis of the design of the PHOS CSP, but modified to meet the requirements of the EMCal and DCal. Modifications were made specifically for a different APD choice with different characteristics, and also with the goals of less noise, faster rise time, and reduced cost. This paper presents a detailed description of the new CSP features and the test results.
Direct Photon Production and Azimuthal Anisotropy at Low Transverse Momentum measured in PHENIX

Abstract:The PHENIX experiment discovered a large excess of low-$p_{T}$ direct photons in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV compared to reference p+p collisions, which has been attributed to thermal radiation from the medium produced in the collisions. At the same time the excess photons show a large azimuthal anisotropy, expressed as Fourier coefficients $v_{2}$ and $v_{3}$. These surprising results have not yet been fully described by theoretical models. We will present the results obtained from real photons in the electromagnetic calorimeter and photons converted on the outer shell of the Hadron Blind Detector. PHENIX has also developed a new technique to identify conversion photons without assuming the radius where the conversion happened. This method greatly increases the available statistics and reduces systematic uncertainties.

The ALICE 3 detector concept for LHC Runs 5 and 6 and its physics performance

Abstract:The LHC Run 5 and 6 data taking phases will bring unprecedented luminosity in high-energy proton-proton and in heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE Collaboration proposes a next-generation experiment, ALICE 3, specifically designed to operate with the future LHC. ALICE 3 will feature a large pixel-based tracking system covering eight units of pseudorapidity, complemented by advanced particle identification systems. These include silicon time-of-flight layers, a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector, a muon identification system, and an electromagnetic calorimeter. By placing the vertex detector on a retractable plate inside the beam pipe, a track pointing resolution better than 10 microns can be achieved for the transverse momentum range $p_T$>200 MeV/c. ALICE 3 will be capable of innovative measurements of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and explore new frontiers in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The detailed study of thermal and dynamical properties of QGP will be made possible by measuring low-$p_T$ heavy-flavour production, including beauty hadrons, multi-charm baryons, and charm-charm correlations. Precise multi-differential measurements of dielectron emission will allow for the exploration of chiral-symmetry restoration and the time-evolution of QGP temperature. In addition to QGP studies, ALICE 3 will make unique contributions to the physics of the hadronic phase, through femtoscopic studies of charm meson interaction potentials and searches for nuclei containing charm. This contribution covers the detector design, expected physics performance, and the current status of detector research and development.

Abstract:The relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven national laboratory delivered in June 2000 the first collisions between Au nuclei at the highest center-of-mass energies achieved in a controlled enviroment to date, PHOBOS is one of the four experiments installed during this phase of RHIC running. This paper will describe the PHOBOS experiment, and discuss the results of the first physics measurement, the pseudo rapidity densities of primary charged particles near mid rapidity in central Au+Au collisions at two different energies, roots(NN) = 56 and 130 GeV. The observed densities are higher than those previously observed in any collisions, and the rate of increase between the two energies is larger than that for nucleon-nucleon collisions at comparable beam energies. This talk will describe the PHOBOS experiment, discuss the first physics measurement, and conclude with the present status of the experiment, the physics analysis and the perspectives for the future.
