Abstract:We consider an optimisation problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) that is to find a multicast tree rooted at the source node and including all the destination nodes such that the lifetime of the tree is maximised. While a recently proposed distributed algorithm for this problem guarantees to obtain optimal solutions, we show that its high message complexity may prevent such contribution from being practically used in resource-constrained WSNs. In this paper, we proposed a new distributed sub-optimal algorithm that achieves a good balance on the algorithm-optimality and message complexity. In particular, we prove that it has a linear-message complexity. The trade-off between algorithm sub-optimality and message complexity is also studied by simulations.

Abstract:We consider the lifetime optimization problem for multicast communications in wireless ad hoc networks with directional antennas. In this paper, we propose a new distributed algorithm, whose performance, in terms of both approximation ratio and message complexity, is guaranteed by our theoretical analysis. We prove that its approximation ratio is bounded by a finite number and it has a linear message complexity. The performance of this new proposed algorithm is also evaluated using simulation studies and the experimental results show that it can provide similar multicast lifetime but with much lower message complexity compared to the existing distributed algorithms.

Abstract:Network lifetime maximization is a critical problem for long-term data collection in wireless sensor networks. For large-scale networks, distributed and self-adaptive solutions are highly desired. In this paper, we investigate how to optimize the network lifetime by a localized method. Specifically, the network lifetime maximization problem is converted to a localized cost-balancing problem with an appropriately designed local cost function. A distributed algorithm, LocalWiser, which adopts the idea of adaptive probabilistic routing, is proposed to construct a localized and self-adaptive optimal solution to maximize the network lifetime. We analyze LocalWiser in both static and dynamic networks. In static networks, it is formally proved that 1) LocalWiser can reach a stable status; 2) the stable status is optimal for maximizing the network lifetime. In dynamic networks, our extensive simulations illustrate that LocalWiser can converge to the optimal status rapidly for the network topology and flow dynamics.

Abstract:Several centralized and distributed algorithms have been recently proposed to maximize the multicast lifetime for directional communications in wireless ad-hoc networks. Their performance has been studied by simulations; however, their theoretical performance in terms of approximation ratio is still unknown. In this paper, we use the graph theoretic approach, by the first time, to derive the upper bound of the approximation ratio in an analytical expression for these algorithms. We have also discovered that these upper bounds are finite numbers. Based on this analysis and some key observations, we present a new distributed constant-factor approximation algorithm in order to achieve a higher performance. This effort is validated by our simulation studies.

Abstract:Multiple-message broadcast is a generalization of the traditional broadcast problem. It is to disseminate k distinct (1 ≤ k ≤ n) messages stored at k arbitrary nodes to the entire network with the fewest timeslots. In this paper, we study this basic communication primitive in unstructured wireless networks under the physical interference model (also known as the SINR model). The unstructured wireless network assumes unknown network topology, no collision detection and asynchronous communications. Our proposed randomized distributed algorithm can accomplish multiple-message broadcast in O((D + k) log n + log2 n) timeslots with high probability, where D is the network diameter and n is the number of nodes in the network. To our best knowledge, this work is the first one to consider distributively implementing multiple-message broadcasting in unstructured wireless networks under a global interference model, which may shed some light on how to efficiently solve in general a “global” problem in a “local” fashion with “global” interference constraints in asynchronous wireless ad hoc networks. Apart from the algorithm, we also show an Ω(D+k+log n) lower bound for randomized distributed multiple message broadcast algorithms under the assumed network model.
Energy-efficient broadcasting algorithm in mobile ad hoc networks

Abstract:Some nodes with many neighbors in the virtual backbone of broadcasting based on minimum connected dominating set (MCDS) are prone to being drained out quickly for more frequent packets relaying. A new relaying efficiency model was employed to reflect the trade off between network lifetime and global energy consumption according to the energy model of data transmission in mobile ad hoc networks and the battery-operated characteristic of mobile devices. The model considered the transmission power of different nodes and evaluated the lifetime of each node by its recent energy consumption based on the remained energy and the number of its neighbors. Then a multipoint-relaying based energy-efficient broadcasting algorithm (EE-MPR) was proposed. The algorithm constructed a broadcasting tree on the fly with smaller broadcasting cost by selecting fewer nodes with high relaying priority as relaying nodes. The energy load was evenly distributed among devices and the lifetime of network was prolonged. Simulation shows that EE-MPR outperforms the existing broadcasting algorithms in terms of the longest network lifetime and the minimum energy cost.

Abstract:The transmission rate, delivery reliability, and network lifetime are three fundamental but conflicting design objectives in energy-constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this paper, based on stochastic network utility maximization framework, we address the optimal rate-reliability-lifetime tradeoff with time-varying channel capacity constraint, reliability constraint, and energy constraint. By introducing the weight parameters, we combine the optimization objectives of rate, reliability, and lifetime into a single objective to characterize the tradeoff among them. However, the optimization formulation of the rate-reliability-reliability tradeoff is neither separable nor convex. Through a series of transformations, a separable problem is derived, and an efficient distributed stochastic subgradient algorithm is proposed via dual decomposition and stochastic subgradient techniques. It is proved that the proposed algorithm can converge to the global optimum with probability one. Numerical examples confirm its convergence. In addition, numerical examples investigate the impact of weight parameters on the rate utility, reliability utility, and network lifetime, which provide guidance to properly set the value of weight parameters for a desired performance of WSNs according to the realistic application's requirements.

Abstract:We consider the lifetime optimization problem for multicasting in wireless ad hoc networks, in which each node is equipped with a directional antenna and hits limited energy supplies. In this paper, we propose a new distributed algorithm, whose performance in terms of providing long-lived multicast tree is guaranteed by our theoretical analysis. We prove that its approximation ratio is bounded by a finite number. In particular, the derived upper bound in a closed form shows that the algorithm call achieve global optimal in some cases. The real performance of this new proposed algorithm is also evaluated using Simulation studies and the experimental results show that it outperforms other distributed algorithms.

In order to study the multicast lifetime capacity of large-scale networks, we also propose an efficient heuristic algorithm with guaranteed theoretical performance. In particular, we provide a sufficient condition to determine if its performance reaches optimum based on the analysis of its approximation ratio. These results are validated by experiments as well. The multicast lifetime capacity is then quantitatively studied by evaluating the proposed exact and heuristic algorithms using simulations. The experimental results also show that using two-beam antennas can exploit most lifetime capacity of the networks for multicast communications.

Abstract:In the paper, we study the utility-lifetime tradeoff in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) by formulating it as a constrained multi-objective optimization problem. Because of the coupling in the objective function, auxiliary variables are introduced to decouple it. We adopt Lagrange duality method to decompose the problem and regulate the rates through the link congestion price. We introduce the concept of inconsistent coordination price to balance the energy consumption of the sensor nodes. Based on the congestion and inconsistent coordination price, a distributed algorithm using gradient projection is proposed. Numerical results show the convergence of our algorithm, the tradeoff of utility-lifetime as well as the necessity of congestion control in WSNs.

Abstract:In traditional stop-and-wait strategy for reliable communications, such as ARQ, retransmission for the packet loss problem would incur a great number of packet transmissions in lossy wireless ad-hoc networks. We study the reliable multicast lifetime maximization problem by alternatively exploring the random linear network coding in this paper. We formulate such problem as a min-max problem and propose a heuristic algorithm, called maximum lifetime tree (MLT), to build a multicast tree that maximizes the network lifetime. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can significantly increase the network lifetime when compared with the traditional algorithms under various distributions of error probability on lossy wireless links.

Abstract:This paper first presents an analysis strategy to meet requirements of a sensing application through trade-offs between the energy consumption (lifetime) and source-to-sink transport delay under reliability constraint wireless sensor networks. A novel data gathering protocol named Broadcasting Combined with Multi-NACK/ACK (BCMN/A) protocol is proposed based on the analysis strategy. The BCMN/A protocol achieves energy and delay efficiency during the data gathering process both in intra-cluster and inter-cluster. In intra-cluster, after each round of TDMA collection, a cluster head broadcasts NACK to indicate nodes which fail to send data in order to prevent nodes that successfully send data from retransmission. The energy for data gathering in intra-cluster is conserved and transport delay is decreased with multi-NACK mechanism. Meanwhile in inter-clusters, multi-ACK is returned whenever a sensor node sends any data packet. Although the number of ACKs to be sent is increased, the number of data packets to be retransmitted is significantly decreased so that consequently it reduces the node energy consumption. The BCMN/A protocol is evaluated by theoretical analysis as well as extensive simulations and these results demonstrate that our proposed protocol jointly optimizes the network lifetime and transport delay under network reliability constraint.

Abstract:Mobile security is one of the most fundamental problems in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The data transmission path will be compromised for some disabled nodes. To construct a secure and reliable network, designing an adaptive route strategy which optimizes energy consumption and network lifetime of the aggregation cost is of great importance. In this paper, we address the reliable data aggregation route problem for WSNs. Firstly, to ensure nodes work properly, we propose a data aggregation route algorithm which improves the energy efficiency in the WSN. The construction process achieved through discrete particle swarm optimization (DPSO) saves node energy costs. Then, to balance the network load and establish a reliable network, an adaptive route algorithm with the minimal energy and the maximum lifetime is proposed. Since it is a non-linear constrained multi-objective optimization problem, in this paper we propose a DPSO with the multi-objective fitness function combined with the phenotype sharing function and penalty function to find available routes. Experimental results show that compared with other tree routing algorithms our algorithm can effectively reduce energy consumption and trade off energy consumption and network lifetime.

Abstract:Heterogeneous wireless sensor network (HWSN) consists of sensor nodes with different ability, such as computing power and sensing range. Compared with homogeneous wireless sensor network, the design of protocols for such networks has to be more complex due to the energy constraint in order to prolong the lifetime of the network. As energy consumption mostly comes from the radio transmissions, bandwidth utilization affects the network lifetime greatly. In this paper, a novel lossless data aggregation scheme (Better-to-Fit) is presented for the clustering-based HWSN to improve the bandwidth utilization without introducing extra computation. The average performance is evaluated theoretically and validated by simulations. It has been found that the proposed aggregation technique can minimize the aggregation time under energy constraint and achieve promising efficiency in terms of bandwidth utilization.
Achieving Energy Efficiency and Reliability for Data Dissemination in Duty-Cycled WSNs

Abstract:Because data dissemination is crucial to wireless sensor networks (WSNs), its energy efficiency and reliability are of paramount importance. While achieving these two goals together is highly nontrivial, the situation is exacerbated if WSN nodes are duty-cycled (DC) and their transmission power is adjustable. In this paper, we study the problem of minimizing the expected total transmission power for reliable data dissemination (multicast/broadcast) in DC-WSNs. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we design efficient approximation algorithms with provable performance bounds for it. To facilitate our algorithm design, we propose the novel concept of Time-Reliability-Power (TRP) space as a general data structure for designing data dissemination algorithms in WSNs, and the performance ratios of our algorithms based on the TRP space are proven to be for both multicast and broadcast, where is the maximum node degree in the network and is the number of source/destination nodes involved in a data dissemination session. We also conduct extensive simulations to firmly demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithms.

Abstract:The network lifetime and network utility are two fundamental but conflicting design objectives for rate control in wireless sensor networks.To consider two sides of network performance synthetically,an optimal model is set up based on the trade-off factor.The problem is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem and the Lagrangian dual decomposition approach is used to solve it.The distributed algorithm for the optimal sending rates is given further.Simulations results indicate that an fundamental tradeoff between network lifetime and network utility is achieved by adjusting a parameters.Also,the desirable properties of the proposed algorithm are validated,including convergence to the global optimum.

Abstract:It is essential to maximise the lifetime of a given multicast tree, in order to keep the nodes active as long as possible in Wireless Ad hoc Networks (WANETs). Due to the impact of hop count on energy efficiency, any efficient routing protocol for WANETs should have low hop count. However, the problem of generating the optimised energy efficient routing protocol for WANETs is NP-hard. Any workable heuristic solution is, therefore, highly desirable in this case. To take into account the trade-off between the lifetime and the hop count in routing of multicast tree in WANETs, this paper defines a new metric termed Energy Efficiency Metric (EEM). Theoretical analyses show that it is efficient to fully characterise the energy efficiency of WANETs. A distributed routing algorithm called Maximum Lifetime and Minimum Hop-count (MLMH) is then proposed with the aim that extends the lifetime while minimising the maximal hop count of a source-based multicast tree in WANETs. Simulation results provide evidence that MLMH achieves satisfactory performance.
