Abstract:With the development of cognitive neuroscience, there are important advances in bilingual brain studies and thereby many theories have emerged. The common representation theory and the multiple representation theory constitute two main theories, both of which have received empirical support. Recent research has shown that the disparities between the two theories are probably attributed to the time of L2 acquisition, fluency of the two languages involved, styles and strategies of language acquisition, processing tasks, and the nature of language. This paper sets out to review relevant developments and discuss their implications for second language learning.
