Abstract:Carbon nanotubes have attracted considerable interest for their unique electronic properties. They are fascinating candidates for fundamental studies of one dimensional materials as well as for future molecular electronics applications. The molecular orbitals of nanotubes are of particular importance as they govern the transport properties and the chemical reactivity of the system. Here we show for the first time a complete experimental investigation of molecular orbitals of single wall carbon nanotubes using atomically resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Local conductance measurements show spectacular carbon-carbon bond asymmetry at the Van Hove singularities for both semiconducting and metallic tubes, demonstrating the symmetry breaking of molecular orbitals in nanotubes. Whatever the tube, only two types of complementary orbitals are alternatively observed. An analytical tight-binding model describing the interference patterns of ? orbitals confirmed by ab initio calculations, perfectly reproduces the experimental results.

Abstract:The temperature-dependent transverse mechanical properties of single-walled nanotubes are studied using a molecular mechanics approach. The stretching and bond angle force constants describing the mechanical behavior of the sp(2) bonds are resolved in the temperature range between 0 and 1600 K, allowing to identify a temperature dependence of the nanotubes wall thickness. We observe a decrease of the stiffness properties (axial and shear Young's modulus) with increasing temperatures, and an augmentation of the transverse Poisson's ratio, with magnitudes depending on the chirality of the nanotube. Abstract:The nonlinear atomistic interactions usually involve softening behavior. Instability resulting directly from this softening are called the material instability, while those unrelated to this softening are called the structural instability. We use the finite-deformation shell theory based on the interatomic potential to show that the tension instability of single-wall carbon nanotubes is the material instability, while the compression and torsion instabilities are structural instability.

Abstract:A finite-deformation shell theory for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is established directly from the interatomic potential for carbon to account for the effect of bending and curvature. Its constitutive relation accounts for the nonlinear multibody atomistic interactions and therefore can model the important effect of CNT chirality and radius. The equilibrium equations and boundary conditions are obtained for the symmetric stresses and bending moments, which are different from many existing shell theories that involve asymmetric stress and bending moments. The theory is used in Part II of this paper to study the instability of carbon nanotubes subjected to different loadings.

Abstract:Boron-nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) display unique properties and have many potential applications. An atomistic-based continuum theory is developed for BNNTs. The continuum constitutive model for BNNTs is obtained directly from interatomic potentials for boron and nitrogen. Such an approach involves no additional fitting parameters beyond those introduced in interatomic potentials. The atomistic-based continuum theory is then applied to study the Young's modulus, stress–strain curve and nonlinear bifurcation in BNNTs. It is shown that the mechanical behavior of BNNTs is virtually independent of the diameter and length of BNNTs, but has a strong dependence on helicity.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes show great promise for applications ranging from nanocomposites, nanoelectronic components, nanosensors, to nanoscale mechanical probes. These materials exhibit very attractive mechanical properties with extraordinarily high stiffness and strength, and are of great interest to researchers from both atomistic and continuum points of view. In this paper, we intend to develop a continuum theory of fracture nucleation in single-walled carbon nanotubes by incorporating interatomic potentials between carbon atoms into a continuum constitutive model for the nanotube wall. In this theory, the fracture nucleation is viewed as a bifurcation instability of a homogeneously deformed nanotube at a critical strain. An eigenvalue problem is set up to determine the onset of fracture, with results in good agreement with those from atomistic studies.

Abstract:The mechanical and thermal properties of a hybrid nanotube consisting of a coaxial carbon nanotube (CNT) inside a graphyne nanotube (GNT), i.e., CNT@GNT, are investigated in this paper by using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the mechanical properties of CNT@GNT under uniaxial tension depend on the nanotube chirality of its components. Specifically, the Young's modulus of the CNT@GNT structure with an inner zigzag CNT is larger than that of its counterpart with an armchair CNT, while CNT@GNT with an armchair CNT and a zigzag GNT is found to possess the largest tensile strength and fracture strain. In addition, a unique fracture behavior of the successive rupture of its two components is observed in CNT@GNT. The thermal conductivity of CNT@GNT is found to be almost independent of the nanotube chirality of its components but increases as the length and diameter of the CNT@GNT increase. Moreover, strain engineering is shown as an effective avenue to modulate the thermal conductivity of CNT@GNT, which can be enhanced by tension but reduced by compression. The analysis of the phonon spectrum and spectral energy density demonstrates that this strain effect originates from changes of the phonon group velocity and phonon scattering in the strained CNT@GNT.

Abstract:Boron nitride nanotubes display unique properties and have many potential applications. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method to control the collapsed nanostructurings of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by helium storage and the key mechanism is elaborated from the potential energy aspect. The molecular dynamics simulation shows that enough helium atoms could restore the collapsing configuration of (40, 40) carbon nanotubes back to the circular cross section. The length of the flat double carbon atoms layer in the dumbbell type structure and the diameter of nearly circular edges can be precisely altered by adjusting the helium atom numbers. Two key storage rates are introduced to classify the final nanostructures of (5n, 5n) SWCNTs. The relationship between helium numbers and the final configuration is investigated; the analysis method that introduces helium atoms into the cavity of SWCNTs can also be extended to other kinds of molecules.
Electromechanical instability in suspended carbon nanotubes

Abstract:We have theoretically investigated electromechanical properties of freely suspended carbon nanotubes when a current is injected into the tubes using a scanning tunneling microscope. We show that a shuttle-like electromechanical instability can occur if the bias voltage exceeds a dissipation-dependent threshold value. An instability results in large amplitude vibrations of the carbon nanotube bending mode, which modify the current-voltage characteristics of the system.

Abstract:The tensile deformations and fractures of super carbon nanotubes (STs) are investigated through the atomic-scale finite element method. STs generated from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different characteristic aspect-ratioed arms are found to have different nonlinear behaviors in the uniaxial tension process. Specifically, the ST with higher aspect-ratioed arms has three distinct stages: rotation, stretch and rupture, while the ST with lower aspect-ratioed arms has only two stages. Moreover, the local buckling can be only observed in the ST with higher aspect-ratioed arms. This information may lay the foundations for further explorations to the properties of STs in the near future.

Abstract:In the present paper, the constitutive relation and failure behaviorsof carbon nanotube-reinforced composites are studied using methods of micromechanics and nanomechanics. First, we examined the factors that influence the overall mechanical property of carbon nanotube composites, including the weak bonding between carbon nanotubes and matrix, the curviness and agglomeration of carbon nanotubes. Second, we established a hybrid continuum/micromechanics/atomistic method to investigate the defect nucleation in a carbon nanotube embedded in a polymer matrix.

Abstract:The discovery of lower dimensional forms of Carbon with unique mechanical and electronic properties has generated new possibilities in many areas of technology especially in nanotechnology. Recent emergence of some nanoscale device applications show how this potential is turning into a reality. Over the years, we have employed various levels of theory to study the structure and properties of carbon based materials for nanoscale applications. In this paper, we present two new theoretical studies. We present a study on the transition metal catalyzed growth of single wall carbon nanotubes. In the second study, we investigate the relation between mechanical deformation and excess charge in order to understand how introducing and controlling the charge at various locations might modify the mechanical and acoustical properties of carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that introducing excess charges into single wall carbon nanotubes can lead mechanical deformations that do mechanical work. The results suggest a wide range for practical applications, such as NEMS, acoustic sensors and nanoactuators. The peculiar chemistry of carbon results in diverse forms of structure: the 3-dimensional network of diamond and the 2- dimensional sheets of graphite have been known through the ages. The applications such as; a) Structural and mechanical properties of nanotubes, (refs 1-3); b) Tribological properties of carbon for NEMS applications (ref 4); c) Thermal transport properties of nanotubes and carbon based hetero- structures (refs 5-6), and d) Formation of fullerenes, (ref 7) have appeared elsewhere. In this paper, we will present two new theoretical studies. Over the past several years a large number of synthetic procedures for the production of Carbon nanotubes have been developed. Since the electronic properties of carbon nanotubes depend on structure the control of growth is essential. Theoretical studies of growth mechanisms may shed some light on how to control the growth. Abstract:A shell theory established from the interatomic potential for carbon nanotubes is compared with the atomistic simulations. This shell theory is implemented in the finite element program ABAQUS via its user-material subroutine UGENS for shells. The numerical results for the representative loadings of tension, torsion and bending agree well with the atomistic simulations, which provide direct validation of this atomistic-based shell theory for carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:In this paper, the electron diffraction technique to determine the helicity and atomic structure of carbon nanotubes is reviewed, as well as different mechanical test methods, tensile test, bending test, compression test and vibration test of carbon nanotubes by in situ electron microscopy are summarized while the relationship between mechanical properties and structures revealed by experiments is addressed. Except for these, the electric current and electron beam irradiation effect and some other novel electron microscopy experiments are also incorporated.

Abstract:Structural properties of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes with a double vacancy under stretching are studied by using a multiscale hybrid energy density method. Based on the optimized structure, the single-particle Green function method is then used to investigate the transport property. It is found that a reconstruction of the structure occurs with an increase of the imposed axial force, which alters the transmission function around the Fermi energy and will reduce the current. This reconstruction cannot be found by running a molecular dynamics simulation without a quantum description.

Abstract:Due to the enormous difference in the scales involved in correlating the macroscopic properties with the micro- and nano-physical mechanisms of carbon nanotube-reinforced composites, multiscale mechanics analysis is of considerable interest. A hybrid atomistic/continuum mechanics method is established in the present paper to study the deformation and fracture behaviors of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in composites. The unit cell containing a CNT embedded in a matrix is divided in three regions, which are simulated by the atomic-potential method, the continuum method based on the modified Cauchy–Born rule, and the classical continuum mechanics, respectively. The effect of CNT interaction is taken into account via the Mori–Tanaka effective field method of micromechanics. This method not only can predict the formation of Stone–Wales (5-7-7-5) defects, but also simulate the subsequent deformation and fracture process of CNTs. It is found that the critical strain of defect nucleation in a CNT is sensitive to its chiral angle but not to its diameter. The critical strain of Stone–Wales defect formation of zigzag CNTs is nearly twice that of armchair CNTs. Due to the constraint effect of matrix, the CNTs embedded in a composite are easier to fracture in comparison with those not embedded. With the increase in the Young’s modulus of the matrix, the critical breaking strain of CNTs decreases.

Abstract:In the present work we discuss based on extensive fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations the dynamics of Neon atoms oscillating inside (5,5)single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and boron-nitride (BNNT) ones. Our results show that sustained high frequency oscillatory regimes are possible for a large range of temperatures. Our results also show that the general features of the oscillations are quite similar to CNT and BNNT, in contrast with some speculations in previous work literature about the importance of broken symmetry and chirality exhibited by BNNTs.
