Abstract:Telemetry plays a very important role in the application of geophysics. With the continuous development of new logging theory and new methods, more and more information is required to be accurately uploaded in real-time. Which methods and techniques are used to improve the rate of logging cable data transmission systems has become a major problem in the development of well logging instruments. In this paper, we present a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based design and implementation of a high speed telemetry device for well logging. The proposed device could be divided into two modules, a modulator and a demodulator, which is based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In addition, it has some unique features that are effective for the telemetry systems, such as its ability to bit-load and data compress. With this device, the modulated data transmitted over a 7,000-meter armored cable can be demodulated in real time. Measurements made in the laboratory indicate that the communication system based on the device can correctly demodulate and achieve good bit error rate specifications. Compared to conventional devices using specified code chips or digital signal processors, the FPGA-based device consumes less power, has better adaptability and real-time performance. Besides geophysical applications, the device can also be used in environmental and engineering geophysical applications that require long distance transmission.
