Factor analysis of the body shape and structure in Guangxi university high-level swimming athletes

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: According to the body constitution characteristics of the college high-leveled swimming athletes, this report extracts the common factors form the characteristics of body shape and structure by using factor analysis method, explains the common factors, and analyzes the athletes’ body shape and structure. We expect this report can help to develop an effective pre-match training control and result forecasting. METHODS: Twelve high-level swimming athletes were recruited from Guangxi University in 2008. Using the spot investigation method, the body shape of twelve high-level swimmers were analyzed through eight indexes, such as finger distance, height, lower leg-foot length, hand area, streamline index, sebum thickness index, intertrochanter width and skinfold thickness. The factorial eigenvector, eigenvalue and the contribution rate were found out by dealing with the eight indices using SPSS12.0 for windows. The initial factor model and postrotatory factor model were set up to understand the factorial structure and body shape of Guangxi university students. RESULTS: ①The body shape and structure of swimmers comprised three common factors, namely the basal body shape factor, the somatic type factor, and the body composition factor. The weight of each factor were K1 = 0.734 54, K2 = 0.108 83, K3 = 0.097 73. ②The factor analysis showed that the athletes should have the preferable height, the length of limbs, the enriched body, the larger acreage of extremity and the "inverse cone" streamline somatic type; whereas has lower requirement for the percentage of body fat. CONCLUSION: The application of factor analysis methods and less use of integrated analysis of the variables can simplify the issues. This analysis provides diversified research methods for colleges and universities swimming study and help to develop an effective pre-match training control and result forecasting.
