Abstract:It has been recognized that sensor network deployment shoul d include a high degree of redundancy so that every node can be covered by a few others and they can take turns to perform the duty. This strategy can potentially help extend network lif etime and maintain a desired coverage and connectivity level. In o rder to achieve this goal, one must carefully schedule the act ions of the redundant nodes to simultaneously address energy con servation, coverage, and connectivity. This paper present s the design and implementation of a 2-dimensional adaptive tech nique (DADA) that can dynamically adapt a redundant node’s schedule based on application demands and network conditio ns. DADA introduces both spatial diversity and temporal divers ity to the node schedules, thus leading to a much prolonged lifet ime. At the same time, it provides protection against unexpected node failures. Using extensive simulation studies, we demonstr ate that our schemes can improve the network lifetime by a factor of 2.9 compared to ASCENT, while providing improved network coverage and connectivity by better surviving unexpected n ode failures. Further, we demonstrate that the lifetime improv ement of our schemes scales linearly with the deployment redundan cy.
