Abstract:The photochemistry of matrix isolated (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) azide, CF3SO2N3, has been studied at low temperatures. Upon ArF laser irradiation (λ = 193 nm), the azide eliminates N2 and furnishes triplet [(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]nitrene, CF3SO2N, which has been characterized by IR and EPR spectroscopy. Upon subsequent UV light irradiation (λ = 260-400 nm) the nitrene converts to CF3N═SO2 and CF3S(O)NO through a Curtius-type rearrangement. Further two new species CF2N═SO2F and FSNO were identified together with CF2NF, SO2, F2CO, CF3NO, and SO as side products. In addition, triplet nitrene CF3N was detected by its EPR and IR spectra. The complex stepwise photodecomposition of matrix isolated CF3SO2N3 is discussed in terms of the observed photolysis products and quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract:The photoisomerization of N2O3 isomers has been studied by FTIR spectroscopic method in an argon matrix under 632.8, 355 and 266nm laser irradiations. Photolysis of asym-N2O3 leads to the formation of sym-N2O3 at 632.8 or 266nm. Under 355nm irradiation the asym-N2O3 and sym-N2O3 can be converted to trans–cis isomer, and reversible photoconversion of trans–cis N2O3 into sym-N2O3 occurs at 632.8nm. The vertical electronically excited states of three isomers have been studied with CIS method and their electronic transitions have also been predicted. A photochemical isomerization cycle of N2O3 isomers is proposed to correlate the interconvertions between three different isomers.

Abstract:Splendid isolation: Monomeric phosphazene F(2)PN ((1)A(1)) was prepared for the first time through irradiation of F(2)PN(3) in an argon matrix with an ArF excimer laser (lambda=193 nm). Abstract:Two carbonyl pseudohalogen compounds CF2HC(O)NCO and CF2HC(O)NCS have been synthesized and fully characterized by IR (gas-phase, matrix-isolation), Raman (liquid), UV-vis (gas-phase), and NMR (F-19, C-13, H-1) spectroscopy. The conformational properties and photochemistry of both species have been studied by combining matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations with the B3LYP, MPW1PW91, CBS-QB3 methods. Two conformers (syn and anti), depending on the configuration between the C=O and pseudohalogen ligands (NCO and NCS), have been unambiguously identified in both gas phase and solid noble gas matrices (Ar and Ne). Consistent with the theoretical calculations, the syn conformation is energetically more favorable. Upon irradiation with an ArF excimer laser (193 nm), CF2HC(O)NCO and CF2HC(O)NCS in cryogenic matrices eliminate CO and yield CF2HNCO and CF2HNCS, respectively. The underlying mechanism for the photochemistry of CF2HC(O)NCO is rationalized by the elimination of the carbonyl rather than the isocyanato C=O moiety. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The structure, spectroscopic properties and photo-induced conformational changes of 2-aminothiazole-4-carboxylic acid (ACA) isolated in argon and nitrogen matrices were studied using matrix-isolation FTIR spectroscopy and DFT calculations undertaken at the B3LYPD3/6–311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory. Out of 18 stable isomers, the three most stable structures with the five-membered ring stabilized by two C = C and C = N double bonds and with different arrangement of the carboxyl group were identified in both matrices after deposition. Conformer ACA1 has trans and conformers ACA2 and ACA3 have cis conformation of the COOH group and the calculated abundance of 69.5 %, 18.2 % and 12.2 %, respectively. Following irradiation at 285 nm, a rotation of the OH group around the C–O bond in ACA1 was detected leading to increase of ACA2. The corresponding reverse photo-rotamerization was detected at 296 nm, resulting in the recovery of the initial isomer ACA1. Upon NIR irradiation a dominant process was rotamerization within the carboxylic group leading to changes in the population of the ACA1 trans and ACA2 cis forms.

Abstract:Abstract Merocyanines (MC) usually adopt ring opened zwitterionic structures that are interconvertible with their ring‐closed spiropyran photoisomers. By methylating the phenolate oxygen, and thereby blocking the ring‐closure reaction, a cis/trans ‐only MC photoswitch was obtained, yielding a perfect candidate for a detailed examination of the cis / trans isomerization mechanism for this class of compounds. This photoswitch displays outstanding properties including excellent photoreaction quantum yields and photoswitching turnovers. Due to the central polymethine bridge of MC, in principle eight cis (C)/ trans/ (T) isomers are possible. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed the CCT and TTT‐isomers of the studied compound as most stable cis and trans ground state isomers, respectively. UV/vis transient absorption studies combined with conical intersection computations with the complete active space self‐consistent field (CASSCF) method show that both trans/cis ‐ and cis/trans ‐photoisomerizations are initiated by a rotation of the central doubled bond fragment. A hot ground state species is then formed, which undergoes a second isomerization. Thus, the cis/trans reaction proceeds via a CCT‐CTT‐TTT sequence and the reverse reaction via TTT‐TCT‐CCT.

Floquet Engineering of a Diatomic Molecule Through a Bichromatic Radiation Field

Abstract:We report on a theoretical study of a Cs$_2$ molecule illuminated by two lasers and show how it can result in novel quantum dynamics. We reveal that these interactions facilitate the bypass of the non-crossing rule, forming Light-Induced Conical Intersections and modifiable avoided crossings. Our findings show how laser field orientation and strength, along with initial phase differences, can control molecular state transitions, especially on the micromotion scale. We also discuss extensively how the interaction of radiation with matter gives rise to the emergence of potential energy surfaces of hybrids of radiation and molecular states. This research advances a technique for manipulating photoassociation processes in Cs$_2$ molecules, offering potential new avenues in quantum control.

Abstract:By high-vacuum flash pyrolysis of bis(trifluoromethyl)disulfane oxide (CF3S(O)SCF3) at 400 °C, the elusive trifluoromethylthiyl radical (CF3S˙) has been efficiently generated in the gas phase. Subsequent isolation of CF3S˙ in cryogenic matrixes (Ne, Ar, and N2) allows a first time characterization with IR and UV-vis spectroscopy by combining with computations at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV(T + d)Z level. In addition to the photo-induced sulfur atom transfer (SAT) from CF3S˙ to N2 and CO and the isomerization to ˙CF2SF, the O2-oxidation via the intermediacy of the novel thiylperoxy radical CF3SOO˙ has been observed.

Abstract:We have used a molecular-beam photoionization technique to probe the vibrational-energy distribution of SF(6) molecules excited by an intense CO(2) laser at energy fluences close to and below the dissociation threshold. We observe a significant bottleneck at low laser intensities. Even at laser fluences close to the dissociation threshold, most of the molecules remain in the discrete levels, and only a small fraction (approximately 10-25%) are excited into the quasi-continuum.

Abstract:Two CF2O⋯IF complexes have been found during laser photolysis of CF3I/O2 in Ar and Xe matrices. The geometries and fundamental vibrational frequencies of two complexes CF2O⋯IF (A) and CF2⋯IF(B) have been determined by ab initio calculations at MP2 level with the LANL2DZ basis set. The calculated potential energies indicate that the complex(B) is more stable than the complex(A) by 23kJ/mol. The frequencies and stability are in agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:The angle-resolved inner-shell photoionization of R-trifluoromethyloxirane, C3H3F3O, is studied experimentally and theoretically. Thereby, we investigate the photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) for nearly-symmetric O 1s and F 1s electronic orbitals, which are localized on different molecular sites. The respective dichroic $\beta_{1}$ and angular distribution $\beta_{2}$ parameters are measured at the photoelectron kinetic energies from 1 to 16 eV by using variably polarized synchrotron radiation and velocity map imaging spectroscopy. The present experimental results are in good agreement with the outcome of ab initio electronic structure calculations. We report a sizable chiral asymmetry $\beta_{1}$ of up to about 9% for the K-shell photoionization of oxygen atom. For the individual fluorine atoms, the present calculations predict asymmetries of similar size. However, being averaged over all fluorine atoms, it drops down to about 2%, as also observed in the present experiment. Our study demonstrates a strong emitter- and site-sensitivity of PECD in the one-photon inner-shell ionization of this chiral molecule.

Abstract:Two new heteroarylnitrenes, 3-nitrene-2-formylthiophene (15/15') and 3-nitrene-2-formylfuran (16/16'), in the triplet ground state have been generated in solid Ar (10.0 K) and N2 (15.0 K) matrices by the 266 nm laser photolysis of 3-azido-2-formylthiophene (13) and 3-azido-2-formylfuran (14), respectively. According to the characterization with matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level, both nitrenes exhibit two conformations depending on the orientation of the formyl groups. Upon subsequent green-light irradiation (532 nm), both the nitrenes 15/15' and 16/16' undergo ring closure to form 3,2-thienoisoxazole (17) and 3,2-furoisoxazole (18), respectively. Traces of 3-imino-4,5-dihydrothiophene-2-ketene (19), formally formed through the intramolecular 1,4-H shift in the corresponding nitrenes 15/15', have been also identified among the laser photolysis products of the azide 13. In sharp contrast to the photochemistry, the high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) of the azide 13 at ca. 1000 K mainly yields imino ketene in two conformations 19/19' together with traces of isoxazole 17. In addition to the reversible conformational interconversion in the imino ketene 19 ↔ 19', the photoisomerization from isoxazole 17 to imino ketene 19 has also been observed. The HVFP of the azide 14 at ca. 1000 K results in complete dissociation to HCN, C2H2, CO, CO2, H2O, and N2. Unlike the recently disclosed hydrogen-atom tunneling (HAT) in the transformation from the structurally related 2-formyl phenylnitrene (2) to imino ketene 3 in a cryogenic Ar-matrix, the absence of HAT in nitrenes 15 and 16 can be reasonably explained by the higher barrier heights and also larger barrier widths in the isomerization reactions.

Abstract:The initial relaxation dynamics of the photoexcited fullerenes C60, C70, C76, C84, C86, and C90 were investigated by dispersion-free femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Under identical excitation conditions, the formation of the lowest excited state slows down for the larger fullerenes. This trend in dynamics, monitored throughout the visible and NIR range, is found to correlate with the number of isomers in accordance with the isomerization mechanism suggested by Stone and Wales. The Stone-Wales isomerization was calculated as thermally inaccessible but photoinduced barrierless. The energy difference of the isomers is in the 1 meV range, and back-isomerization is observed on the picosecond time scale. The characteristic spectrally broad transient absorption of the investigated fullerenes is promising for fast optical gating applications.

Abstract:Nanosecond laser pulse induced molecular reorientation in azobenzene doped liquid crystals (LCs) in the isotropic phase was studied by the optical heterodyned optical Kerr effect method. Reorientation inversion was found by artificially preparing a cis isomer enriched initial state. The interaction strength ratio of trans and cis isomers with the LC molecules was deduced based on a modified mean-field theory model. Our results provide a further understanding of the photo-induced reorientation of photo-isomerizable dye-doped LC systems.

Abstract:Direct access to trans−cis photoisomerization in a metastable state photoacid (mPAH) remains challenging owing to the presence of competing excited-state relaxation pathways and multiple transient isomers with overlapping spectra. Here, we reveal the photoisomerization dynamics in an indazole mPAH using time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) spectroscopy by exploiting a unique property of this mPAH having only fluorescence from the trans isomer. The combination of these experimental results with time-dependent density function theory (TDDFT) calculations enables us to gain mechanistic insight into this key dynamical process.

Abstract:Imaging the structure of molecules in transient excited states remains a challenge due to the extreme requirements for spatial and temporal resolution. Ultrafast electron diffraction from aligned molecules (UEDAM) provides atomic resolution and allows for the retrieval of structural information without the need to rely on theoretical models. Here we use UEDAM and femtosecond laser mass spectrometry (FLMS) to investigate the dynamics in carbon disulfide (CS2) following the interaction with an intense femtosecond laser pulse. We have retrieved images of ground state and excited molecules with 0.03 Å precision. We have observed that the degree of alignment reaches an upper limit at laser intensities below the ionization threshold, and found evidence of structural deformation, dissociation, and ionization at higher laser intensities.

Abstract:We report experimental studies of double ionization of C2H4 and C2H6 molecules irradiated by 810nm, 130fs pulses at intensity of 1015–1016W/cm2. The laser intensity dependent ratios X2+/X+ (X denoted C2H4 or C2H6) are measured for both linearly polarized and circularly polarized lights to determine the double ionization mechanism. The result is contrary to the prediction of the rescattering model, which demonstrates that the molecular structure should be taken into account to deal with the nonsequential double ionization of molecules.

Abstract:The potential solid-state [2+2] photodimerization of two trans-cinnamic acid derivatives, trans-4- (trifluoromethyl) cinnamic acid (4-tfmca) and trans-3-(trifluoromethyl) cinnamic acid (3-tfmca), has been studied by potassium bromide (KBr) pellets and optical spectroscopy. As opposed to taking powder or single crystal material as a sample, herein, we used polycrystalline samples incorporated in the KBr matrix (pellet) and were able to follow the course of the photochemical reaction via optical spectroscopy. The results show that the photodimerization of 4-tfmca within the KBr matrix yields photodimer in roughly 100% conversion, while the changes observed for 3-tfmca within the KBr matrix suggest a subtle photochemical change which could not be observed when irradiating the neat powder. This suggests that the KBr matrix helps to couple the light into the crystallites of the embedded sample and shows that the KBr matrix reveals photochemistry which might not have been found in the single crystal or powder state of the sample.

Abstract:Using a classical approach, we theoretically investigate the frustrated double ionization (FDI) of Ar atoms under elliptically polarized (EP) laser fields. The FDI yield is calculated as a function of laser intensity with different carrier-envelope phases (CEPs), and, similar to the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) dependence of nonsequential double ionization (NSDI), several knee-shaped structures appear. Moreover, both recollision and direct ionization trajectories are observed in FDI events for the "knee" structure regime. The footprints of which channel leads to FDI are encoded in the photoelectron momentum distributions. FDI events related to recollision excitation with subsequent ionization channels and recollision impact ionization channels can be controlled by CEP in EP laser fields.
