Abstract:The basic human cognitive domains include space, imagified into two approaches. The first is based on Brown and Levinson's face/politeness″ theory;the second is Meier's ″repair work″ view. The present paper will focus on Meier's ″repair work″ and initiate some disagreements and criticism.Through analyzing Chinese apologies,or to be specifically, the causes and consequences of Chinese apologies, the paper points out the inadequacy of ″repair work″ model. In regard to the cause of the apologizing act, required by politeness norms,Chinese may apologize ″out of no reason(we term this ″groundless apology″),and the apologies can take place before the real offence(we term this(″preventive)apologies″),in addition to apologizing after it,which is the only case studied by Meier.Thereby, the face of the apologizer could either be threatened, not threatened,or to be threatened. In any of those circumstances,Chinese might use indirect-apologies or simply choose not to apologize at all to achieve the same or even better effect than that of apologizing. The Chinese especially prefer doing so when they are speaking with close friends and relatives,or with people younger or at lower social status. The reason is that the result of apologies in China is not necessarily equilibrium but can be 'over-equilibrium'.The goals of apologies(as well as non-apologies and indirect-apologies) are not only to 'repair',but also to remain or to enhance the face of the speaker, when the ″preventive apologies″ and ″groundless apologies″ are concerned. In short, the revised model we propose is far more complicated than Meier's ″repair work″,in which the apologies only occur after certain offence and with the only purpose of regaining the equilibrium of the social relations. However,we can never claim that our model is perfect and universal;more research is called for, especially when applied to different cultures.
