Abstract:NiO-CuO nanoparticles prepared by the sol-gel method were used as catalyst for the degradation of dichloroacetic acid by ozone. Catalyst samples were characterized by measuring the specific area (SBET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The catalytic activity of NiO-CuO nanoparticles was investigated for the removal of dichloroacetic acid in aqueous solutions, using different experimental conditions like catalyst dose, initial reaction temperature, and pH have been examined. Ozonation processes were significantly influenced by tert-butyl alcohol, which confirmed that NiO-CuO catalytic ozonation follows a radical-type mechanism, which the hydroxyl radicals were truly identified by spin-trapping/electron spin resonance (EPR) technique and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. In our DFT calculation, we illustrated the atomistic details with three surface models of NiO-CuO nanoparticle and presented a mechanism depicting how an ozone molecule interacted with the surface and how hydroxyl radicals were generated on the surface with a quantitative and qualitative discussion including electronic structure characteristics and relative energetic diagrams. We found partial electron transfer from these surfaces to the adsorbed ozone, which directly led to the decomposition of ozone and promoted the generation of superoxide radical ions and hydroxyl radicals. Results suggested that the introduction of NiO-CuO nanoparticles led to violent interaction between ozone and the catalyst surface, hence promoting the decomposition of ozone and the generation of .OH which, in turn, might lead to an increase in their catalytic ozonation efficiency.

Abstract:Alumina has been used as a catalyst for ozonation, surface hydroxyl on which is regarded as the active center for ozone attack, but the influences of hydroxyl generation are still vague. Here, we prepared alumina with different hydroxyl concentrations by adjusting calcination temperatures, of which the catalytic activity was evaluated with the mineralization degree of phenol, and then revealed the active sites of hydroxyl generation with characterization of XRD, Py-IR, and NH3-TPD. The results show that the greater the hydroxyl concentration, the higher the catalytic activity, demonstrating that surface hydroxyl contributes to its catalytic activity. The effect of calcination temperatures on hydroxyl concentration and catalytic activity is in accordance with the amount of weak Lewis acid sites on the surface of alumina, illustrating the surface hydroxyl derived from the decomposition of water adsorbed on weak Lewis acid sites. However, the catalytic performance of the alumina decreases slowly in a long-term reaction owing to the active center reduction resulted from the coverage by organic acids from phenol degradation. The present work reveals the influences of hydroxyl generation which are beneficial for adjusting surface hydroxyl regarded as active site for ozone attack and the reason of catalyst deactivation, which provides guideline for the rational design of catalyst.
Enhanced catalytic ozonation performance by CuOx nanoclusters/TiO2 nanotube and an insight into the catalytic mechanism

Abstract:Highly reactive nanoclusters of metal oxides are extremely difficult to be synthesized due to their thermodynamic instability. For the first time, CuOx nanoclusters supported on anatase TiO2 nanotubes (NT) with many defects as anchoring sites were successfully prepared. Although the copper loading reached as high as 2.5 %, the size of CuOx nanoclusters in the sample of 2.5 %CuOx/NT were mainly around 1.0 nm. The aggregation of copper species during the calcination process was undoubtedly hampered by the anchoring effects of the abundant defects in NT support. Due to the highly exposed undercoordinated atoms of CuOx nanoclusters, the mixed valences of copper, and the strong interface interaction between CuOx nanoclusters and NT support, 2.5 %CuOx/NT-catalyzed ozonation showed the highest pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of 8.5 × 10-2 min-1, 2.2 and 4.0 times that of NT-catalyzed ozonation and ozonation alone, respectively. Finally, the catalytic mechanism was revealed by both experiments and density functional theory calculations (DFT). The results demonstrated that the undercoordinated Cu in CuOx/NT could highly promote the adsorption of ozone with a high adsorption energy of -125.16 eV and the adsorbed ozone was activated immediately, tending to dissociate into a O2 molecule and a surface O atom. Thus, abundant reactive oxygen species, e.g., hydroxyl radical (·OH), superoxide radical (·O2-) and singlet oxygen (1O2), could be generated via chain reactions. Especially, ·OH mainly contributed to the removal of ibuprofen pollutants. This work sheds a light on the design and preparation of highly reactive nanoclusters of metal oxide catalysts for catalytic ozonation of refractory organic pollutants.
O, N Coordination-Mediated Nickel Single-Atom Catalysts for High-Efficiency Generation of H2O2.

Abstract:Electrochemical selective two-electron oxygen reduction shows great potential for on-site electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Herein, we demonstrated the synthesis of Ni single-atom sites coordinated by three oxygen atoms and one nitrogen atom (i.e., Ni-N1O3) supported by oxidized carbon black (OCB) by pyrolyzing nickel-(pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylate) coordination complexes. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM) combined with X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) proves the presence of atomically dispersed Ni atoms attached on OCB (labeled as Ni-SACs@OCB), in which Ni single atoms are stabilized by a N, O-mediated coordination configuration. This Ni-SACs@OCB catalyst shows high H2O2 selectivity (95%) in a range of 0.2-0.7 V undergoing a two-electron oxygen reduction process, with a kinetic current density of 2.8 mA cm-2 and a mass activity of 24 A gcat.-1 at 0.65 V (vs RHE). In practice, H-cells with Ni-SACs@OCB as catalysts displayed a high H2O2 production rate of 98.5 mmol gcat.-1 h-1 with negligible current loss during testing, suggesting the high H2O2 generation efficiency and robust stability. DFT theoretical calculations revealed that Ni single-atom sites coordinated by O, N coordination exhibit advantages in oxygen adsorption and increased reactivity toward the intermediate species, *OOH, which is beneficial to high selectivity for H2O2 production. This work provides a novel N, O-mediated four-coordinate nickel single-atom catalyst as a promising candidate for practical decentralized production of H2O2.
Mechanism and Activity of Water Oxidation on Selected Surfaces of Pure and Fe-Doped NiOx

Abstract:Mixed nickel iron oxides have recently emerged as promising electrocatalysts for water oxidation because of their low cost and high activity, but the composition and structure of the catalyst's active phase under working conditions are not yet fully established. We present here density functional theory calculations with on-site Coulomb repulsion of the energetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on selected surfaces of pure and mixed Ni-Fe oxides that are possible candidates for the catalyst's active phase. The investigated surfaces are pure beta-NiOOH(01 (1) over bar5) and gamma-NiOOH(101), Fe-doped beta-NiOOH(01 (1) over bar5) and gamma-NiOOH(101), NiFe2O4(001), and Fe3O4(001). We find that Fe-doped beta-NiOOH(01 (1) over bar5) has by far the lowest overpotential (eta = 0.26 V), followed by NiFe2O4(001) (eta = 0.42 V). Our results indicate that Fe-doped beta-NiOOH and, to a lesser extent, NiFe2O4 could be the phases responsible for the enhanced OER activity of NiOx when it is doped with Fe.

Abstract:A DFT study of the catalytic properties of CuO/CNT and CuO@CNT complexes for the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation has been performed. We illustrated the atomistic details of CuO/CNT and CuO@CNT with a quantitative and qualitative discussion within such an electronic structure characteristics. Ozone was catalytically decomposed into an atomic oxygen species and oxygen molecule on both the surface inner and outer CuO@CNT complex, while ozone can only decompose over CuO on the outer surface of CuO/CNT, with partial electrons transfer from CuO/CNT and CuO@CNT complexes to the adsorbate. Then the atomic oxygen reacted with the water molecule to form two hydroxyl groups on the surface, promoting the reaction chain for the generation of•OH which, in turn, lead to an increase in the catalytic ozonation efficiency. Results show synergetic confinement effect of metal oxide nanoparticles inside CNT could also lead to an acceleration of ozone decomposition and the generation of •OH on the inner and outer surface of carbon-nanotube containing catalytic particles.

Abstract:Abstract The structure-activity relationship in catalytic ozonation remains unclear, hindering the understanding of activity origins. Here, we report activity trends in catalytic ozonation using a series of single-atom catalysts with well-defined M 1 -N 3 C 1 (M: manganese, ferrum, cobalt, and nickel) active sites. The M 1 -N 3 C 1 units induce locally polarized M − C bonds to capture ozone molecules onto M atoms and serve as electron shuttles for catalytic ozonation, exhibiting excellent catalytic activities (at least 527 times higher than commercial manganese dioxide). The combined in situ characterization and theoretical calculations reveal single metal atom-dependent catalytic activity, with surface atomic oxygen reactivity identified as a descriptor for the structure-activity relationship in catalytic ozonation. Additionally, the dissociation barrier of surface peroxide species is proposed as a descriptor for the structure-activity relationship in ozone decomposition. These findings provide guidelines for designing high-performance catalytic ozonation catalysts and enhance the atomic-level mechanistic understanding of the integral control of ozone and methyl mercaptan.

Abstract:The degradation efficiencies of phenol in aqueous solution were studied by semi-continuous experiments in the processes of ozone alone, ozone/bulky Co3O4 and ozone/Co3O4 nanoparticles. Catalyst samples (bulky Co3O4 and Co3O4 nanoparticles) were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, pH(pzc) and the density of surface hydroxyl groups of the two catalyst samples were also measured. The catalytic activity of Co3O4 nanoparticles was investigated for the removal of phenol in aqueous solutions under different reaction temperatures. Tert-butyl alcohol had little effect on the catalytic ozonation processes. Based on these results, the possible catalytic zonation mechanism of phenol by Co3O4 nanoparticles was proposed as a reaction process between ozone molecules and pollutants.

Abstract:In this study, a series of ZnO decorated rGO composites (x%) were successfully synthesized by the alkaline hydrothermal method. The crystal structure, surface morphology, and chemical property of x% were characterized by BET, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and XPS, respectively. Amongst, 15% composite exhibited superior catalytic ozonation performance with an improvement of 68.4% on atrazine (ATZ) degradation efficiency (3 mins), more than 7.8 times of the pseudo-first-order rate constant compared with single O 3 . The roles of O 3 and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) were confirmed and compared by the quenching and low-concentration probe experiments, suggesting that O 3 and OH played an important role for ATZ degradation, while the function of 1 O 2 and O 2 − can be neglected both in single O 3 and 15%/O 3 system, which was contrary to that of the quenching experiments. Besides, the exposures of O 3 and ROSs showed that 15% can facilitate the transformation process of 1 O 2 to OH in different conditions, and largely enhance the exposure of OH. The roles of electrons, Lewis acid sites, and oxygen vacancies of 15% in catalytic ozonation were identified as well, which offered us a new perspective to design a high-efficiency catalyst and may promote graphene-based metal oxides for practical pollutant elimination.

Abstract:Based on the experimental and theoretical methods, the NO selective catalytic oxidation process was proposed. The experimental results indicated that lattice oxygen was the active site for NO oxide over the α-MnO2(110) surface. In the theoretical study, DFT (density functional theory) and periodic slab modeling were performed on an α-MnO2(110) surface, and two possible NO oxidation mechanisms over the surface were proposed. The non-defect α-MnO2(110) surface showed the highest stability, and the surface Os (the second layer oxygen atoms) position was the most active and stable site. O2 molecule enhanced the joint adsorption process of two NO molecules. The reaction process, including O2 dissociation and O=N-O-O-N=O formation, was calculated to carry out the NO catalytic oxidation mechanism over α-MnO2(110). The results showed that NO oxidation over the α-MnO2(110) surface exhibited the greatest possibility following the route of O=N-O-O-N=O formation. Meanwhile, the formation of O=N-O-O-N=O was the rate-determining step.

Abstract:This paper studied the property of oxides of nickel, ferrite and copper or their two components mixture that catalyzed ozonation of tobias acid solution, one of important dye intermediates. Ni-Fe(1:4) and Ni-Cu(4:1) catalysts which were prepared by the adsorption-precipitation method performed the highest activity, their ozone utilization efficiency is 28. 9% and 24. 3% higher than the γ-Al 2O 3 carrier respectively. In the process of catalyzed ozonation, biodegradability of solution was greatly improved, and BOD 5/COD rose to the maximum value of 0. 28 as the ozone dosage was 0. 25 - 0. 35g/L.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) has been used in the catalytic ozonation of oxalic acid in aqueous solution, which was pretreated using ozone and was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nitrogen adsorption and Boehm titration. The effect of ozonation pretreatment on the catalytic activity of MWCNT and the ozonation mechanism of oxalic acid in the presence of MWCNT were investigated. The results indicate that with the increasing pretreatment time, the atom ratio of oxygen to carbon and the number of surface acid groups on MWCNT increase, while the catalytic activity of MWCNT on ozonation of oxalic acid decreases, suggesting that the chemical characteristics of MWCNT mainly determine its catalytic activity on oxalic acid mineralization. The inhibition of tert-butyl alcohol on the degradation of oxalic acid is slight for pristine MWCNT catalytic ozonation and this inhibition trend becomes more obvious when MWCNT was pretreated by ozone. A free radical mechanism was proposed which involves both surface reactions and bulk reactions between the oxalic acid and active species.
Oxygen Evolution Activity on NiOOH Catalysts: Four-Coordinated Ni Cation As the Active Site and the Hydroperoxide Mechanism

Abstract:The NiOOH catalyst as obtained dynamically from electrodeposition of Ni2+(aq) in the borate-containing electrolyte was observed to exhibit much higher oxygen evolution activity at a near-neutral pH range (7-9) compared to other NiOx-based materials. Here, we demonstrate that this intriguing high activity is owing to the high concentration of Ni cationic vacancy on the nascent ultra-small NiOOH particles (<3 nm). By using first-principles calculations, we compute the thermodynamics of Ni dissolution and clarify the mechanism of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the gamma-NiOOH surface. We show that (i) similar to 4% Ni cations on the surface of gamma-NiOOH dissolve at pH = 7 and 1.73 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode; (ii) on the pristine gamma-NiOOH surface, OER proceeds via the "lattice peroxide" mechanism (*H2O -> *OH -> *O-(OH)-H-latt* -> O-O-latt -> O-2) with an overpotential of 0.70 V; (iii) in the presence of Ni cationic vacancies, OER proceeds via the "hydroperoxide" mechanism (*OH + *H2O -> *2OH -> *OOH -> O-2) with an overpotential of 0.40 V. Our electronic structure and geometrical structure analyses demonstrate that the structural flexibility at the four-coordinated Ni site nearby Ni vacancy, featuring the ability to bind two terminal oxo species, is key to boost the activity. Considering the presence of the active OOH intermediate, our theory thus implies that the ultra-small oxide nanoclusters with ample cation vacancies could be a paradigm in catalyst design for oxidation reactions.

Abstract:ZnO plays a very important role in many catalytic processes involving H2, yet the details on their interactions and H2 activation mechanism are still missing, owing to the lack of a characterization method that provides resolution at the atomic scale and follows the fate of oxide surface species. Here, we apply 17O solid-state NMR spectroscopy in combination with DFT calculations to unravel the surface structure of ZnO nanorods and explore the H2 activation process. We show that six different types of oxygen ions in the surface and subsurface of ZnO can be distinguished. H2 undergoes heterolytic dissociation on three-coordinated surface zinc and oxygen ions, while the formed hydride species migrate to nearby oxygen species, generating a second hydroxyl site. When oxygen vacancies are present, homolytic dissociation of H2 occurs and zinc hydride species form from the vacancies. Reaction mechanisms on oxide surfaces can be explored in a similar manner.
Enhanced electron-transfer for peroxymonosulfate activation by Ni single sites adjacent to Ni nanoparticles

Abstract:Oriented generation of specific reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been challenging in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this work, we constructed a multifunctional catalyst composed of Ni NPs embedded in N -doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) with exposed Ni single-atom sites (Ni-NCNTs). The Ni-N 4 single sites adjacent to the Ni NPs are more efficient for PMS adsorption and activation, resulting in enhanced production of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). More interesting, we demonstrated that the superoxide anion radical (O 2 •– ) was generated from 1 O 2 reduction via the electron transfer from the graphitic-N sites of Ni-NCNTs rather than from O 2 reduction or PMS decomposition as reported in previous studies. Thus, Ni-NCNTs can act as both electron acceptor and donor to trigger the cascade production of 1 O 2 and O 2 •– , respectively, leading to fast and selective degradation of aqueous organic pollutants. The graphitic-N adjacent to the aromatic π-conjugation of NCNTs facilitated chemisorption of 1 O 2 onto NCNTs via the strong π*–π interactions, and more importantly, donated the lone pair electrons to trigger the reduction of 1 O 2 to O 2 •– . This study unravels the mechanisms for enhanced production of ROS in the nanoconfined Fenton-like systems and shed new light on the application of multifunctional nanocatalyst for rapid wastewater decontamination.

The surface structure of β-NiOOH (001) under reaction conditions and its effect on OER activity: An ab initio study

Abstract:β-NiOOH shows excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity under alkaline conditions, but the surface structure under the working environment is not yet fully established. Through ab initio thermodynamic approach, the relationship between catalyst surface structure and pH, electrode potential was studied. For the most stable state of the catalyst surfaces, three adsorbing oxygen atoms and one Ni vacancy form. Doped iron decreases the formation energy of Ni vacancy thus increasing the stable range of surface states. OER mechanism was explored based on the obtained most stable structures. The first step of the reaction is the desorption of oxygen rather than the formation of *OH due to large Steric effects. Ni vacancy reduces the dehydrogenation energy of the adsorbate *OOH and the formation energy of oxygen radical. The interaction between iron and oxygen atom is large than the Ni and oxygen. Therefore, Fe-doped system reduces the formation energy of *O and changes the potential-limited step from the formation of adsorbate *O to the desorption of O2.

Abstract:Developing catalysts with high efficiency and excellent interference tolerance for practical application remains a challenge in catalytic ozonation process. Herein, the surface Vo-rich catalyst was successfully prepared by lattice-doping Co into zinc ferrite spinel, which exhibited efficient mineralization of recalcitrant organic pollutants. The contaminants removal was mainly attributed to the nonradical-based oxygen species of surface atomic oxygen (*O) rather than traditional hydroxyl radical ( · OH). The experiments and DFT calculation results revealed that Vo was the main active sites for adsorption of ozone and production of *O. The O-O in ozone was dissociated at Vo, trigging the formation of *O. In addition, the Vo-driven nonradical catalysis showed high resistance to the coexisting ions (200 mM Cl - , SO 4 2- and NO 3 - ) and exhibited excellent performance for actual wastewater treatment. This work provides a novel strategy to regulate the oxidation pathways in catalytic ozonation process for efficient mineralization of pollutants in complicated water matrices.

Abstract:We investigated the catalytic effect of CuO nanoparticles confined in carbon nanotubes using molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. Ozone decomposition and hydroxyl radical generation were used as the probe reactions to investigate the catalytic behavior of catalyst. The effects of the confined environment of carbon nanotubes induced more reactants into the channel. Interface interactions between reactants and CuO nanoparticles in the channel and charge transfer accelerated the decomposition of ozone into oxygen molecule and atomic oxygen species. The atomic oxygen species then interacted to water molecule to generate hydroxyl radicals, which were truly identified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique.
