Abstract:Let （M,g） and （N,h）be two Riemannian manifolds. Consider the heat flow for harmonic maps from （M,g） into （N,h）.We prove the following results Suppose dim M =3 and is a nontrivial homotopy class in C（M,N）.Then there exists a constant ?o such that if and E（u0）＜e, the solution of the heat flow with initial value u0 must blow up in finite time. We also present a sufficient condition which ensures that any global solutions subconverge to harmonic maps as t→∞.

We show that the local smooth solution to the heat flow of self-induced harmonic map will blow up at a finite time, provided that the initial map u 0 is in a suitable nontrivial homotopy class with energy small enough.

Abstract:This note is concerned with the singular behaviour of solutions to the heat equation of harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds.Eells and Sampson [5] showed that for C 1 initial values the solutions exist locally in time and asked whether they exist for all time or they may blow up in finite time.Recently, Coron-Ghidaglia [3], Ding [4] and Chen-Ding [2] constructed many examples of finite-time blow-up of the solutions in the case where the domain manifold has dimension greater than two.However, it has been widely believed that finite-time singularities would not occur in dimension two.Such a belief is seemingly supported by a number of phenomena special for dimension two.For example, it has been noted that even if a given smooth map from a surface belongs to a homotopy class containing no harmonic maps, the solution to the heat equation with the given map as initial value may exist globally (see [1] and [6]).Such a phenomenon is unknown in higher dimensions and may be viewed as an indication that probably all solutions exist globally in dimension two.Another phenomenon, observed first by R. Abstract: The question whether a solution of the heat equation for harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds always exists globally or it may blow up in finite time was originally asked by Eells and Sampson ([E-S]). Thereafter, the question has been asked by many authors (see e.g. [E-L2] and [J]). Quite recently, Coron- Ghidaglia ([C-G]), Ding ([D]) and Chen-Ding ([C-D]) prove that in many cases, finite-time blow-ups do occur. However, in all these cases the dimensions of the domain manifolds are greater than 2. Therefore the above question remains open in dimension 2.

Abstract:Let M and N be two compact Riemannian manifolds. Let u k (x, t) be a sequence of strong stationary weak heat flows from M×R + to N with bounded energies. Assume that u k→u weakly in H 1, 2(M×R +, N) and that Σt is the blow-up set for a fixed t > 0. In this paper we first prove Σt is an H m−2-rectifiable set for almost all t∈R +. And then we prove two blow-up formulas for the blow-up set and the limiting map. From the formulas, we can see that if the limiting map u is also a strong stationary weak heat flow, Σt is a distance solution of the (m− 2)-dimensional mean curvature flow [1]. If a smooth heat flow blows-up at a finite time, we derive a tangent map or a weakly quasi-harmonic sphere and a blow-up set ∪t<0Σt× {t}. We prove the blow-up map is stationary if and only if the blow-up locus is a Brakke motion.

Abstract:In this paper, we recall and summarize that one has made some important progress in the blow-up analysis on two dimensional harmonic maps. We introduce the ``Ding-Trick and show how to use it to study the convergence behaviors of the necks as a sequence of harmonic maps or approximate harmonic maps from a closed Riemann surface blows up. We also announce some new results on energy identity obtained recently, and pose some open problems on two dimensional harmonic maps.

Abstract:Using a comparison theorem, Chang, Ding, and Ye (1992) proved a finite time derivative blow-up for the heat flow of harmonic maps from D-2 (a unit ball in R-2) to S-2 (a unit sphere in R-3) under certain initial and boundary conditions. We generalize this result to the case of 3-harmonic map heat flow from D-3 to S-3. In contrast to the previous case, our governing parabolic equation is quasilinear and degenerate. Technical issues such as the development of a new comparison theorem have to be resolved.

Abstract:The conformal heat flow for harmonic maps is a system of evolution equations combined with harmonic map flow with metric evolution in conformal direction. It is known that global weak solution of the flow exists and smooth except at mostly finitely many singular points. In this paper, we show that no finite time singularity occurs, unlike the usual harmonic map flow. And if the initial energy is small, we can obtain the uniform convergence of the map and the conformal factor. Also, under the assumption that energy concentration is uniform in time, we show that there exists a sequence of time $t_n \to \infty$ such that $f(\cdot,t_n)$ converges to a harmonic map in $C^1$ on any compact set away from at most finitely many points.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the blow-up phenomena on the $\alpha _k$-harmonic map sequences with bounded uniformly $\alpha _k$-energy, denoted by $\{u_{\alpha _k}: \alpha _k>1 \quad \text{ and } \quad \alpha _k\searrow 1\}$, from a compact Riemann surface into a compact Riemannian manifold. If the Ricci curvature of the target manifold has a positive lower bound and the indices of the $\alpha _k$-harmonic map sequence with respect to the corresponding $\alpha _k$-energy are bounded, then we can conclude that, if the blow-up phenomena occurs in the convergence of $\{u_{\alpha _k}\}$ as $\alpha _k\searrow 1$, the limiting necks of the convergence of the sequence consist of finite length geodesics, hence the energy identity holds true. For a harmonic map sequence $u_k:(\Sigma ,h_k)\rightarrow N$, where the conformal class defined by $h_k$ diverges, we also prove some similar results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the global existence and finite time blow-up of positive solutions for a parabolic system on hyperbolic space. Using the heat semigroup and constructing subsolutions and supersolutions, we obtain the Fujita type results. In the case of a critical exponent, the critical exponent is not a blow-up exponent.

Abstract:We consider the heat flow of corotational harmonic maps from R3\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$\mathbb {R}^3$$\end{document} to the three-sphere and prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a particular self-similar shrinker that is not known in closed form. Our method provides a novel, systematic, robust, and constructive approach to the stability analysis of self-similar blowup in parabolic evolution equations. In particular, we completely avoid using delicate Lyapunov functionals, monotonicity formulas, indirect arguments, or fragile parabolic structure like the maximum principle. As a matter of fact, our approach reduces the nonlinear stability analysis of self-similar shrinkers to the spectral analysis of the associated self-adjoint linearized operators.

Abstract:We study the blow-up problem of one-dimensional nonlinear heat equations. Our result shows that for a certain class of initial conditions, the solutions blow up in finite time and we characterize the asymptotic dynamics of these solutions. The approach is analogous to one used in bifurcation theory and our techniques can be regarded as a time-dependent version of the Lyapunov-Schmidt decomposition.

Abstract:We construct equivariant maps from double-struck B sign3 into ??2 and prove the global existence of heat flow of such equivariant harmonic maps for equivariant initial-boundary data which are not a priori required to have small range. Abstract:We consider the harmonic map heat flow for maps from the plane to the two-sphere. It is known that solutions to the initial value problem exhibit bubbling along a well-chosen sequence of times. We prove that every sequence of times admits a subsequence along which bubbling occurs. This is deduced as a corollary of our main theorem, which shows that the solution approaches the family of multi-bubble configurations in continuous time.

Abstract:We study the heat flow of p-harmonic maps between complete Riemannian manifolds. We prove the global existence of the flow when the initial datum has values in a generalised regular ball. In particular, if the target manifold has nonpositive sectional curvature, we obtain the global existence of the flow for any initial datum with finite p-energy. If, in addition, the target manifold is compact, the flow converges to a p-harmonic map. This gives an extension of the results of Liao-Tam [12] concerning the harmonic heat flow (p = 2) to the case p $\ge$ 2. We also derive a Liouville type theorem for p-harmonic maps between complete Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:In this article we prove that any Palais-Smale sequence of the energy functional on surfaces with uniformily L(2)-bounded tension fields converges pointwise, by taking a subsequence if necessary, to a map from connected (possibly singular) surfaces, which consist of the original surfaces and finitely many bubble trees. Abstract:We investigate a parabolic-elliptic system for maps (u, v) from a compact Riemann surface M into a Lorentzian manifold N x R with a warped product metric. That system turns the harmonic map type equations into a parabolic system, but keeps the v-equation as a nonlinear second order constraint along the flow. We prove a global existence result of the parabolic-elliptic system by assuming either some geometric conditions on the target Lorentzian manifold or small energy of the initial maps.
