Protein Levels and Clinical Significance of EMP1 in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the protein level and significance of epithelial membrane protein-1 (EMP1) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tissues. Methods: Immunohistochemical method was used to determine the expression of EMP1 in 60 samples of OSCC. The difference of EMP1 expression in clinical parameters was analyzed. Scores of EMP1 expression was calculated for diagnosis of OSCC. Results: The expression of EMP1 was found in the cell membrane or cyto-plasm. There were no significant expressions in lymphocytes and intercellular substance. There was a higher expression of EMP1 in the early clinical stage of OSCC than that of later clinical stage of OSCC. There was a significantly higher expression of EMP1 in no lymph node metastasis than that of lymph node metastasis of OSCC. The sensitivity and specificity used for prediction of expressive scores of EMP1 were 61.90% and 77.80%, and the sensitivity and specificity used for clinical stage were both 70.0%, respectively. Conclusion: Expression of EMP1 was correlated with lymph node metastasis and clinical stage, which may has guidance significance for clinical practice.
