Abstract:As the deep diving capability improvement of underwater vehicles, the opportunities to perform the secluded navigational duty increase so many that conventional navigational spatial models could not satisfy the requirement of secluded sailing. Since underwater vehicles have the maneuverability of attitude transformation, they could avoid disturbance or being found by giving full play to the blind zones of sonar detection, and then achieve the purpose of secluded navigation. For the underwater vehicles sailing secluded, it is significant to establish a secluded spatial model for underwater vehicles which demonstrates terrain visibility accurately. Although terrain visibility analysis displays a significant application value in the fields of military operation, tourism, communication, urban planning, etc, there is no application to analyze the terrain visibility under water. Therefore this paper will introduce the algorithm of underwater terrain visibility which could also expand the application range of this theory.Underwater terrain model is the basic structure of space frame, which influences the terrain visibility results and the accuracy of the spatial models. For this reason, the method of Multiple Fractal Kriging Interpolation is applied to describe as underwater terrain information in this paper. Meanwhile underwater terrain visibility is not only the most important standard, but also the theoretical basis for secluded path planning or other analytical applications. Therefore this paper adopts two algorithms (Pivotal Acceptance-Angle Intervisibility Method and Pivotal Acceptance-Angle Viewshed Method) to analyze submarine terrain, calculates the target view shed, and consequently establishes the spatial model serving secluded navigational duty.

Abstract:The mining subsidence in high underground water mining area has high vegetation density, so unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry couldn't get the point cloud of the ground.To address this problem,this paper proposes a new DEM establishing method of mining subsidence areas based on the cross-sectional point cloud filtering and the revision of original DEM from the perspective of terrain feature of mining subsidence areas.This new establishing method can meet the precision analysis of 1 : 500 topographic map and can provide important basis for ground damage evaluation and land reclamation.

Abstract:As deep-sea engineering develops, it becomes essential to analyze the stability of submarine slopes when considering the stability of submarine foundations or evaluating the safety of offshore structures. However, the traditional method for analyzing slope stability does not give adequate consideration to the uncertainty of soil properties, and so the reliability method has been proposed and used to settle the variation of soil parameters. Regarding the northern slope of the South China Sea, the present paper summarizes its geomorphic features, seismic characteristics, and the soil strength at certain boreholes. A typical slope section is chosen with which to conduct probability analysis using the polynomial-based Response Surface Method (RSM) and the Advanced First Order Second Moment method(AFOSM). A novel form of the RSM based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) is also proposed and applied in this case to approximate the limit state function, and its efficiency is confirmed. The simulation results of Latin-hypercube analysis are set as the benchmark for the other methods. The influences of slope gradient and seismic action on the stability of submarine slopes are also investigated.
A new algorithm for high-precision submarine topography imaging

Abstract:In this paper, a new algorithm for high-precision submarine topography imaging is proposed. The innovative idea comes from the most effective and widely used instruments: Multibeam echo sounder (MBES) and side scan sonar (SSS). The MBES can acquire bathymetric information with high precision, but its along-track resolution is related to the result of the beam angle multiplied by the slant range. The SSS combined with synthetic aperture sonar technology can achieve a high-precision along-track imaging resolution, but it cannot acquire bathymetric information directly below it. The proposed algorithm uses the beam footprints of the MBES in the along-track direction to perform the aperture synthesis and uses the time-domain and beam-domain imaging algorithms to acquire high-precision along-track imaging resolution and bathymetric information, to improve the along-track resolution and obtain the bathymetric information with high precision at the same time. Finally, an experiment is performed to evaluate the effectiveness of our method. Experimental results demonstrate that two targets, 13 cm in size, can be clearly observed from the obtained imaging. Moreover, their bathymetric information can be calculated by using the beamforming angle information.

Abstract:One of the important components of digital earth system is the digital ocean in which the implementation of virtual underwater digital terrain is proved a crucial technique.However,the conventional GIS software like ArcGIS does not provide some key functions for the establishment of digital ocean systems in large area.This paper discusses several critical methods for implementing underwater digital terrain models,including the dual transformation in digitizing,the DEM generating method based on depth contours,and the three-dimensional terrain rendering on the base of spherical surfaces.Taking example for the development of the Digital South China Sea system,the techniques proposed in the paper are well validated.

Abstract:This paper primarily investigates the challenges associated with underwater search operations, particularly focusing on the accurate location of distressed submersibles using advanced modeling techniques. Utilizing environmental data and considering factors such as ocean currents, sea densities, and seabed geography, a comprehensive location model has been developed. Initially, the study introduces a basis function to address the uncertainties inherent in the marine environment, enhancing the model's accuracy and fault tolerance. Subsequently, it adopts Voronoi partitioning to allocate search tasks among Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), followed by an equilibrium-based algorithm for task redistribution, ensuring balanced workload distribution. The implementation of an improved raster confidence function facilitates efficient UUV path planning, optimizing search operations. The findings indicate significant improvements in the probability of target containment within planned search areas, although limitations exist due to the omission of biological factors and the efficiency constraints imposed by the discrete grid method. The study concludes with suggestions for future enhancements, particularly in addressing biological influences and optimizing grid size for improved model efficiency.
Assessment of the Seafloor Topography Accuracy in the Emperor Seamount Chain by Ship-Based Water Depth Data and Satellite-Based Gravity Data

Abstract:The seafloor topography estimation is very important, while the bathymetry data and gravity data are scarce and uneven, which results in large errors in the inversion of the seafloor topography. In this paper, in order to reduce the influence of errors and improve the accuracy of seafloor inversion, the influence of different resolution data on the inversion topography in the Emperor Seamount Chain are investigated by combining ship water depth data and satellite gravity anomaly data released by SIO V29.1. Through the comparison of different resolution models, it is found that the choice of resolution affects the accuracy of the inversion terrain model. An external comparison is presented by using the international high-precision topography data and check points observations. The results show that with the increase in resolution, the fitting residuals obtained by the scale factor are optimized, and the precision of the terrain model is gradually approaching the S&S V19.1 and GEBCO-2020 models, but is better than the ETOPO1 and SRTM 30 models. By external validation using the check points, the standard deviation of the difference was reduced from 58.92 m to 47.01 m, and the correlation between the inverted terrain and the NGDC grid model was increased from 0.9545 to 0.9953. For recovering the Emperor Seamount Chain terrain, the relative error was gradually decreased with the improvement of resolution. The maximum relative error is reduced from 1.09 of 2′ topography to 0.74 of 10′′ topography, and the average error is reduced from 0.04 to 0.01 with an improvement by 32.11%. The terrain error between the inverted terrain model and the NGDC grid model is gradually reduced, while the error percentage is increasing by 25.51% and 21.49% in the range of −50 to 50 m and −100 to 100 m, respectively. Furthermore, the sparse area can effectively reduce the terrain standard deviation and improve the terrain correlation by increasing the resolution through the analysis of different density subsets. The error was decreased most significantly in sparse and dense homogeneous regions with increasing resolution.

Abstract:Terrain contour matching (TERCOM) algorithm is the main one in the conventional terrain aided navigation system. When it has been directly applied to the submarine terrain aided navigation (STAN) system, the accuracy and stability are primely reduced. To solve these problems, the detail analyses about the particularities of the STAN and the disadvantages of the conventional TERCOM algorithm have been made. The improvement for the TERCOM algorithm on the measurement function, the water depth survey error and the scheme to prevent fail positioning has been done. Moreover, experiments with pedestrian simulation confirm the effectiveness of the improved TERCOM algorithm. The system achieves higher positioning precision than that of conventional one.

Abstract:For mapping the near-shore seafloor bathymetry, retrieving depth information using multispectral satellite image is highly cost-effective. To effectively detect and characterize the bathymetry variation, accurate and reliable information about the uncertainty of the derived depths is critical. In estimating the uncertainty of the resulted satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB), the conventional homoscedasticity assumption states that the error variance of the observations is constant across different depth ranges. However, this assumption is violated due to the influence of various environmental factors inherently correlated with depth. In this article, we develop a data-driven approach to extract the depth-dependent pattern of observation error. The residual information of the regression is analyzed to model the influence of the depth on the uncertainty of retrieval bathymetry, while nonlinearity and outliers are also considered. This results in a more realistic estimate of SDB accuracy. Our experimental results reveal that the observation uncertainty is significantly correlated with the depth in the bathymetry retrieval process. It is also shown that the presented algorithm effectively captures the depth-dependent pattern of the observation uncertainty, and further provides a more realistic characterization of the uncertainty information of SDB.

Abstract:Gravity anomaly over shallow waters is one of the fundamental data sources for studying sea level change, ocean currents, and water exchanges between coastal areas and open seas. However, the acquirement of gravity data over shallow waters faces multiple challenges due to the degraded quality of satellite altimetry data and the scarcity of surveyed gravimetric observations. To alleviate this problem, we establish a framework for marine gravity anomaly refinement by using satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB). We use a cosine-tapered bandpass filter to extract high-frequency gravity signals from the SDB data, which compensate for the unresolved signals in satellite altimetric gravity data. Numerical experiments over the Discovery Reef and an offshore region near the Port Hedland, Western Australia, demonstrate that the utilization of SDB effectively strengths marine gravity anomaly. By combining the SDB data, the fits between the enhanced gravity anomaly models and surveyed airborne gravity data are improved, by 5.3%–15.7% in comparison with an altimetric gravity model DTU21GRA. The SDB calculated from the linear band model has slightly better performances in gravity anomaly modeling than that computed from the band ratio model and physical-based approach, agreeing well with the SDB validation results. Our results verify the feasibility of using the SDB computed from the physical-based approach for gravity anomaly augmentation, which is of great value in areas devoid of ground-truth depths. This study cements a way for the augmentation of marine gravity anomaly worldwide, especially in remote regions characterized by the scarcity of ground-based gravity data.

Abstract:Obtaining comprehensive and accurate terrain data is important for engineering construction. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) are two widely used terrain modeling techniques. In mountainous areas, both techniques suffer limitations. These limitations occur in uninhabited areas, primarily caused by the steep terrain and inconvenient transportation conditions, resulting in poor data integrity and inadequate accuracy in UAV and TLS terrain mapping. In this article, we proposed a fusion modeling method based on UAV photogrammetry and TLS for high-precision terrain mapping in mountainous and canyon areas. The proposed method entails the use of TLS data to provide additional control points for UAV modeling, resulting in an improved accuracy of the modeling results. In addition, to quantify the optimization effect of this method, we proposed a 3D model deviation comparison method based on the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm. This method can be employed to accurately depict the differences in distance and rotation angle between multiple terrain models. We applied this method to the Yebatan hydropower station in Southwest China, which increased the accuracy of the terrain data by 26% and expanded the effective range by over 100%.

Abstract:Building a high-precision bathymetry digital elevation model is essential for navigation planning, marine and lake resource planning, port construction, and underwater archaeological projects. However, existing bathymetry methods have yet to be effectively and comparatively analyzed. This paper comprehensively reviews state-of-the-art bathymetry methods, including data acquisition techniques, model accuracy, and interpolation algorithms for underwater terrain mapping. First, We assess the merits and drawbacks of novel data acquisition devices, such as single-beam/multi-beam echo sounders and light detection and ranging systems. After that, we analyze the accuracy of the ETOPO1, GEBCO_2022 and SRTM15 to provide valuable insights into their performance. Furthermore, we evaluate ANUDEM, Inverse Distance Weighting, Kriging and Nearest Neighbor interpolation algorithms in different underwater terrains by comparing their applicability, reliability, and accuracy in various underwater environments. Finally, we discuss the development trends and challenges in underwater bathymetry technology and offer a forward-looking perspective on the future of this essential field.

Research on Seabed Terrain Match Algorithm Simulation Based on Hausdorff Distance

Abstract:Terrain match algorithm is one of the key technologies in seabed terrain aided navigation system (STAN). Most of terrain match algorithms are derived from aided navigation system in the airplane or the missile. When they are directly applied to STAN, the positioning precision have fallen off sharply and become unstable because of the seabed terrain particularity. Here, a new approach based on the principles of terrain contour match(TERCOM) is presented. It uses the modified Hausdorff distance as a cost function for the two strips of spatial water depth curve in the survey and the map. As the modified Hausdorff distance is quite tolerant of the small perturbations of the curves and inclusive of their direction partly, the new approach has high positioning precision and robustness. Moreover, experiments with pedestrian simulation confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The system achieves higher positioning precision than that of the conventional TERCOM algorithm.
Predicting The Position of a Submarine Based on A Dynamic Model

Abstract:In deep-sea exploration projects, submarines have become one of the recreational activities for people and also serve as the primary means of scientific investigation in the deep ocean. To monitor the submarine's position and status in real-time, we have developed dynamic and Monte Carlo random walk models to predict its location over some time. Due to the complexity of the underwater environment, search and rescue equipment is necessary to locate the submarine in case of malfunction or loss of contact. Therefore, we employ the VIKOR evaluation ranking model to assess and rank various search and rescue devices, ultimately determining that carrying equipment such as the Teledyne BV5000 sonar, infrared thermographic camera, and deep-sea camera is most suitable. Through our model, we have a significant impact on future submarine diving missions, enabling accurate prediction of the submarine's position and selection of appropriate search and rescue equipment, thereby enhancing safety in underwater exploration and scientific research.
Shallow mud detection algorithm for submarine channels based on improved YOLOv5s

Abstract:Submarine mud poses a risk to channel navigation safety. Traditional detection methods lack efficiency and accuracy. As a result, this paper proposed an enhanced shallow submarine mud detection algorithm, leveraging an improved YOLOv5s model to increase accuracy and effectiveness in identifying such hazards in marine channels. Firstly, the sub-bottom profiler was employed to assess the submarine channel of Lianyungang Port to acquire the image data of the shallow mud sound print. Concurrently, the analysis incorporated the characteristics of changes in sound intensity peaks to precisely identify the shallow mud's location. Furthermore, the incorporation of C2F feature module into the backbone module enhances the gradient flow of the algorithm, augments the feature extraction information, and improves the algorithm's detection performance. Subsequently, Efficient Multi-Scale Attention (EMA) mechanism is incorporated into the neck module, aiming to optimize the algorithm's channel dimensions, minimize computational overhead, and enhance its detection efficiency. Finally, the study introduced Normalized Wasserstein Distance (NWD) loss function into bounding box regression loss function. This integration effectively addresses the issue of multi-scale defects, emphasizes the transformation of target planar position deviation, and improves the accuracy of the algorithm's detection capabilities. The results indicate that the improved YOLOv5s-EF algorithm outperforms the original YOLOv5s algorithm and other widely used detection algorithms. It achieved a validation set precision rate of 97.8%, recall rate of 97.6%, F1 value of 97.7%, mean Average Precision (mAP)@0.5 of 98.2%, mAP@0.95 of 69.6%, and Frames Per Second (FPS) of 51.8. YOLOv5s-EF algorithm proposed in this study offers a novel technical approach for detecting mud in submarine channels, which is importance for ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of dredging in such channels.
Analysis of Underwater Topographic Survey of Stilling Basin Based on Unmanned Survey System

Abstract:The combination of Global Positioning System-Real Time Kinematic (GPS-RTK) and depth sounder is an important technical method of modern underwater topographic survey. In this paper, the combined technology was integrated with unmanned surface vehicle (USV) technology to construct an unmanned survey system suitable for underwater topographic survey in stilling basin, and it was applied to survey the underwater topography of the stilling basin of Tingzikou hydrojunction project. Based on the surveying and mapping data and 3D model, the trend of elevation change of the stilling basin including apron, end sill, antiscour section, and river convergence section was analyzed. The results show that, for the surface outlet stilling basin of Tingzikou, after flood, the structure is complete, the boundaries are clear, the water quality is good, and there is little sediment on the surface of apron from overflow dam section to end sill. Furthermore, no obvious sediment or structural abnormality has been found in the still basin. Affected by the bedrock and cofferdam cobble gravel sediment, the elevation of the antiscour section and the downstream convergence section of the surface outlet stilling basin increased significantly. For the bottom outlet stilling basin of Tingzikou, there is large sediment within a range of 20 m∼40 m from the bottom sill and the maximum height of it reaches 2.04 m, while there is no obvious sediment or structural abnormality in the remaining region of basin. The critical sedimentation height can effectively judge the safety grade of the sedimentation height in stilling basin and provide a reliable support for assessing the overall safety of stilling basin. The application of unmanned survey technology improves the accuracy and timeliness of underwater topography and sedimentation distribution of stilling basin, which has significant application research value and promotion significance.

Abstract:Although the topography of tidal flats is important for understanding their evolution, the spatial and temporal sampling frequency of such data remains limited. The waterline method has the potential to retrieve past tidal flat topography by utilizing large archives of satellite images. This study performs a quantitative analysis of the relationship between the accuracy of tidal flat digital elevation models (DEMs) that are based on the waterline method and the factors that influence the DEMs. The three major conclusions of the study are as follows: (1) the coverage rate of the waterline points and the number of satellite images used to create the DEM are highly linearly correlated with the error of the resultant DEMs, and the former is more significant in indicating the accuracy of the resultant DEMs than the latter; (2) both the area and the slope of the tidal flats are linearly correlated with the error of the resultant DEMs; and (3) the availability analysis of the archived satellite images indicates that the waterline method can retrieve tidal flat terrains from the past forty years. The upper limit of the temporal resolution of the tidal flat DEM can be refined to within one year since 1993, to half a year since 2004 and to three months since 2009.

Abstract:To address the limitations in global seafloor topography model construction, a scheme is proposed that takes into account the efficiency of seafloor topography prediction, the applicability of inversion methods, the heterogeneity of seafloor environments, and the inversion advantages of sea surface gravity field element. Using the South China Sea as a study area, we analyzed and developed the methodology in modeling the seafloor topography, and then evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of the modeling strategy. Based on the proposed modeling approach, the STO_IEU2020 global bathymetry model was constructed using various input data, including the SIO V29.1 gravity anomaly (GA) and vertical gravity gradient anomaly (VGG), as well as bathymetric data from multiple sources (single beam, multi-beam, seismic, Electronic Navigation Chart, and radar sensor). Five evaluation areas located in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans were used to assess the performance of the generated model. The results showed that 79%, 89%, 72%, 92% and 93% of the checkpoints were within the ±100 m range for the five evaluation areas, and with average relative accuracy better than 6%. The generated STO_IEU2020 model correlates well with the SIO V20.1 model, indicating that the proposed construction strategy for global seafloor topography is feasible.

Abstract:Marine gravimetry provides high-quality gravity measurements, particularly in coastal areas. After the update of new sensors in GFZ's air-marine gravimeter Chekan-AM, gravimetry measurements showed a significant improvement from the first new campaign DENEB2017 with an accuracy of 0.3/2=0.21 mGal @ 1 km along the tracks, which is at the highest accuracy level of marine gravimetry. Then, these measurements were used to assess gravity data derived from satellite altimetry (about 3 mGal) and a new finding is that a bias of −1.5 mGal exists in the study area. Additionally, ship soundings were used to assess existing seafloor topography models. We found that the accuracy of SRTM model and SIO model is at a level of 2 m, while the accuracy of the regional model EMODnet reaches the lever of sub-meters. Furthermore, a bias of 0.7 m exists and jumps above 5 m in the SRTM model near the coast of Sweden. Finally, new combined gravity anomalies with sounding data are used to reveal the fine structure of ocean topography. Our estimated seafloor topography model is more accurate than existing digital elevation data sets such as EMODnet, SRTM and SIO models and, furthermore, shows some more detailed structure of seafloor topography. The marine gravimetry and sounding measurements as well as the estimated seafloor topography are crucial for future geoid determination, 3D-navigation and resource exploration in the Baltic Sea.

Abstract:Seafloor topography, as a fundamental marine spatial geographic information, plays a vital role in marine observation and science research. With the growing demand for high-precision bathymetric models, the Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network is used to integrate multi-source marine geodetic data in this paper. A new bathymetric model of the global ocean, spanning 0°–360° E and 80° S–80° N, has been constructed, known as the Shandong University of Science and Technology 2023 Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (SDUST2023BCO), with a grid size of 1′×1′. The multi-source differential marine geodetic data used include gravity anomaly data released by Shandong University of Science and Technology, vertical gravity gradient and the vertical deflection data released by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, as well as mean dynamic topography data released by the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales. First, input and output data are organized from the multi-source marine geodetic data to train the MLP model. Second, the input data at interesting points are fed into the MLP model to obtain prediction bathymetry at interesting points. Finally, a high-precision bathymetric model with a resolution of 1′×1′ has been constructed for the global marine area. The accuracy of the bathymetric model is evaluated by comparing with single-beam shipborne bathymetric data, and GEBCO_2023 and topo_25.1 models. The results demonstrate that the SDUST2023BCO model is accurate and reliable, effectively capturing and reflecting global ocean bathymetric information.
