Abstract:Because of their excellent properties and extensive applications, ceria nanomaterials have attracted much attention in recent years. This perspective provides a comprehensive review of current research activities that focus on the shape-controlled synthesis methods of ceria nanostructures. We elaborate on the synthesis strategies in the following four sections: (i) oriented growth directed by the crystallographic structure of cerium-based materials; (ii) oriented growth directed by the use of an appropriate capping reagent; (iii) growth confined or dictated by various templates; (iv) other potential methods for generating CeO2 nanomaterials. In this perspective, we also discuss the catalytic applications of ceria nanostructures. They are often used as active components or supports in many catalytic reactions and their catalytic activities show morphology dependence. We review the morphology dependence of their catalytic performances in carbon monoxide oxidation, water-gas shift, nitric oxide reduction, and reforming reactions. At the end of this review, we give a personal perspective on the probable challenges and developments of the controllable synthesis of CeO2 nanomaterials and their catalytic applications.

Abstract:The unique electronic configuration and structural properties of ceria make ceria-based nanomaterials such as morphology-dependent ceria nanocrystals, rare earth-doped ceria-zirconia solid solutions and noble metal-ceria nanocomposites effective promoters in three-way catalysts for low-temperature water-gas-shift reaction, preferential oxidation of traces of CO, the treatment of toxic auto-mobile exhaust, etc. The activities of nanoceria catalysts can be determined by their morphologies, oxygen vacancies, interfacial structures and the type of exposed crystal surfaces, as well as the synergistic effect exhibited by nanocomposites. In this review, the state-of-the-art developments in the well-controlled synthesis of ceria-based nanocatalysts and their applications in both environmental and energy fields is summarized. The involved reaction mechanisms are also briefly introduced, and eventually an outlook in the design of novel nanoceria catalysts for valuable energy applications is addressed.

Abstract:In this review, several typical nanomaterials are selected to demonstrate the coordination effect on the control of structure/microstructure/texture, surface/interface, particle size and morphology. Based on the principle of coordination chemistry, with some solution-based methods including solvothermal treatment and the thermolysis of metal complex precursors, a series of novel nanostructured rare earth compounds, such as ultra-small colloidal ceria nanoparticles, highly homogenous and stable ceria–zirconia solid solutions, and high-quality rare earth oxide and fluoride nanocrystals, etc., have been prepared by elaborately controlling the synthetic parameters and reaction kinetics. In order to reveal the mechanisms of synthesis, assembly, and properties, the phase, microstructure, texture, and surface state have been characterized systematically. The main applications of coordination chemistry principle in the synthesis and assembly of rare earth nanocrystals have been summarized, which also can be extended to direct the fabrication of other nanomaterials.

Abstract:Cerium dioxide (CeO 2 )-based nanocomposites, as a branch of nanocomposites, are always constructed from CeO 2 combining with other constituents, which exhibit enhanced performance and excellent stability due to their inherent synergistic systems. The modulation of morphology, size, and types of doping of active metals can be achieved by designing the structures, which providing the opportunity to construct diverse CeO 2 -based nanocomposites. The optimization of the structure enables the design of new multifunctional CeO 2 -based nanocomposites for various applications such as the field of catalysis. In this minireview, we describe the recent development of the nanocomposites based on noble metal-, transition metal-, and metal-organic framework (MOF)-CeO 2 , which are synthesized through various scientific and rational methods. Meanwhile, the design, synthesis, and basic working principles for CeO 2 -based nanocomposites are also elucidated. In addition, some examples of their catalytic applications such as electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis are also discussed. Finally, the structure—activity relationship in guiding the design and synthesis of CeO 2 -based nanocomposites is summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) as a support, additive, and active component for heterogeneous catalysis has been demonstrated to have great catalytic performance, which includes excellent thermal structural stability, catalytic efficiency, and chemoselectivity. Understanding the surface properties of CeO2 and the chemical reactions occurred on the corresponding interfaces is of great importance in the rational design of heterogeneous catalysts for various reactions. In general, the reversible Ce3+/Ce4+ redox pair and the surface acid-base properties contribute to the superior intrinsic catalytic capability of CeO2, and hence yield enhanced catalytic phenomenon in many reactions. Particularly, nanostructured CeO2 is characterized by a large number of surface-bound defects, which are primarily oxygen vacancies, as the surface active catalytic sites. Many efforts have therefore been made to control the surface defects and properties of CeO2 by various synthetic strategies and post-treatments. The present review provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress in regulating the surface structure and composition of CeO2 and its applications in catalysis.

Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) possesses a distinctive redox property due to a reversible conversion to its nonstoichiometric oxide and has been considered as a promising catalyst in the oxidative coupling of methane. Since a heterogeneously catalytic process usually takes place only on the surface of catalysts, it is reasonably expected that the performance of a catalyst, such as CeO2, highly relies on its size- and shape-dependent surface structure. We report our recent progress in achieving exclusive crystal facet-terminated CeO2 nanocrystals using a shape-controlled synthesis protocol in a one-pot colloidal system. We modified a two-phase solvothermal approach to fabricate cubic and truncated octahedral CeO2 nanocrystals with a size-control. During the two-phase solvothermal process, we propose that the Ce-precursors transfer from the aqueous layer to the interface of the organic phase, promoted by the capping ligands (as known as phase-transfer catalysts), for the oxidation and nucleation, and subsequently form CeO2 nanocrystals in the organic layer. As different capping ligands favor binding on diverse crystal facets, tuning the composition of the capping ligand with a precise control could generate nanocrystals that are dominated by a single type of facets with a relatively narrow size distribution.

Abstract:At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.

Abstract:Rare earth compounds form a large family of functional materials with diverse applications in electric, magnetic, optical, and catalytic fields, originating from their unique 4f electrons. Rare earth nanocrystals stir significant interest with their special properties, such as reliable optical applications and enhanced catalytic performances, allowing them to serve as building blocks to construct functional assemblies. In this feature article, we highlight recent works on controlled synthesis of rare earth nanostructures through solution-based routes such as hydrothermal/solvothermal methods and precipitation in high-boiling solvents. Various rare earth nanostructures are obtained both by rationally utilizing intrinsic crystal structures and by fine tuning of experimental conditions, such as temperature, acidity, and capping agents. The controlled phase, crystal growth process, and post-treatment are briefly discussed with typical examples. Rare earth nanocrystals exhibit a variety of shapes and thus are of great benefit for the construction of nanocrystal superlattices. Through the simulation of coarse-grained molecular dynamics, the nanocrystals superstructures are also modelled.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/CdS core/shell heterostructures have been successfully synthesized via a simple solution-phase method. The thickness of CdS shells can be facilely tuned by either the reaction temperature or time. The CdS nanoparticles are first formed directly on the surface of MWCNT, and then a uniform CdS sheath is yielded via orientated aggregation processes. The present work provides a simple route to obtain MWCNT-based core/shell heterostructures and thus is of wide interest for the studies of nanomaterials and nanodevices.

Abstract:Solution combustion synthesis (SCS) is a worldwide adopted technique to synthesize nanomaterials, especially for oxides, because of its simplicity, energy and time-effectiveness, and low cost. The general difficulty encountered in SCS is the controllability over phases and morphologies of the products, which arises from the inherent rapid and uncontrollable combustion procedure. In this regard, the present work is devoted to review the recent progress on phase- and morphology-controlled SCS in detail. Besides the various metal oxides, SCS is now applicable to fabricate nanomaterials of metal phosphates, metal silicates, metal borates, metal sulfides, metals, and even alloys, through careful selection of solution compositions. Oxides with regular morphologies of flowers, belts, triangles, tubes, wires, and rods can be synthesized by SCS, in the presence of certain templates, or through a self-assembly procedure. The recent progress made on the synthesis of porous materials via SCS is summarized. SCS is also capable of growing metal oxide thin films at low temperatures, enabling the fabrication of low-cost and high-performance electronics on flexible plastic substrates.

Abstract:The methodology for controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals with a face-centered cubic(fcc)structure was summarized,illustrating the key parameters for the shape control in the synthesis.Taking the recent progress in our research group as an example,the facet control of metal nanocrystals was demonstrated.For instance,nanocrystals with various low-index facets can be rationally synthesized by selecting appropriate capping agents;the formation of high-index facets can be achieved on the surface of nanocrystals by activating specific sites for atomic addition.As various surface facets possess different atomic arrangements,they exhibit tunable properties in molecular adsorption and activation,which allow us to tailor their performance in catalysis.

Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths

Abstract:Rare earth nanomaterials with nanometer to submicronmeter crystalline sizes are an important class of materials displaying interesting physical and chemical properties especially in luminescence and catalysis fields. In the last decade, the synthetic chemistry and exploring of novel properties on rare earth nanomaterials have been developed rapidly. This review on the topic of controlled synthesis and properties of rare earth nanomaterials should be useful with these literatures mostly up to 2009. The discussion focuses on the controlled synthesis of nanomaterials of inorganic rare earth compounds such as rare earth oxides, oxysalts, halogenides, chalcogenides, and therefore organized according to the different compounds discussed here. The successfully developed solution-based chemical methods, such as traditional sol—Cgel methods, combustion/flaming/pyrolysis methods hydrothermal/solvothermal methods, and those with modifications assisted with microwave radiation and sonochemical methods, the high boiling solvents-based heat treatment methods, and much more have been applied to the controlled synthesis of rare earth compound nanomaterials. Based on the well-developed controlling of pure phase, uniform size and shape, desired doping and composite structure, the rare earth nanocrystals show much more properties and promising application, such as in the medical fields, the energy conversion, pollution controlling, and various displays, which are also mentioned. With the newly developed techniques in top-down and bottom-up strategies for nanomaterials, it is reasonable to anticipate more rational and sophisticated rare earth nanostructures as well as their advanced applications in the future.

Abstract:: Noble metals are widely used in many fields, particularly in catalysis, due to their unique physical and chemical properties. However, their large-scale applications are limited, due to the high price, low reserves, easy agglomeration and the sintering of single component. The above problems can be effectively solved by constructing metal alloy nanocrystals and cerium oxide supported noble metal catalysts. In this review, we will summarize recent progress on the controlled synthesis and catalytic performances of noble metals/cerium oxide nanocatalysts. In detail, mainly based on our group’s work, we present the controlled synthetic approaches, the relationship between the structures and properties, and the catalytic applications of those catalysts with specific shapes and nanostructures. Finally, the future developments and challenges of the cutting-edge research on noble metal-based catalysts are prospected.

Abstract:Ceria nanorods enclosed with {110}/{100} planes and ceria nanocubes with {100} planes have been successfully prepared using a homemade microfluidic system in a continuous, ultrafast and shape-controllable manner. Only 8 min of reaction time are needed rather than days to synthesize ceria nanostructures in the traditional batch hydrothermal method. During the synthesis, reaction temperatures and base concentration have been demonstrated as the key factors responsible for the shape evolution. Accordingly, a morphological phase diagram was determined. In addition, polyvinylpyrrolidone was introduced to realize the transformation from ceria nanorods to nanocubes under unfavorable hydrothermal conditions. Catalytic performance of different CeO2 architectures was also examined in decomposing hydrogen peroxide and a reactivity trend (nanoparticles < nanorods < nonocubes) was observed. This is assumed to be related with different surface oxygen vacancy amounts as a result of {110}/{100} preferential planes, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman analyses as well as density functional theory (DFT+U) calculations.

Dimension-Manipulated Ceria Nanostructures (0d Uniform Nanocrystals, 2d Polycrystalline Assembly, and 3d Mesoporous Framework) from Cerium Octylate Precursor in Solution Phases and Their Co Oxidation Activities

Abstract:Dimension-tunable ceria nanostructures including 0D uniform nanocrystals, 2D polycrystalline assembly, and 3D mesoporous framework were selectively synthesized from the same cerium precursor of Ce(OC8H17)(4) with the designed solution methods. The thermolysis of Ce(OC8H17)(4) in tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and dioctyl ether at 250 degrees C yielded uniform ceria nanopolyhedra and elongated nanocrystals (around 2.2 nm in size). Through the polyol alcoholysis in ethylene glycol at 195 degrees C, polycrystalline assembled nanostructures (PANS) composed of small ceria crystallites (around 3-4 nm) were achieved, showing adjustable cross-linkages in the 2D dendritic structure. The raise of Ce(OC8H17)(4) concentration and reaction time would increase the cross-linkages of the PANs. By a conventional sol-gel route, mesoporous ceria gels in an ordered 2D hexagonal mesostructure were synthesized at 40 degrees C through controlling the hydrolysis rate, and the condensation and aggregation of the metal precursor, as well as the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the block-copolymer surfactants as used (e.g., EO20-PO70-EO20, P123). Catalytic measurements indicated that three CeO2 catalysts prepared from the above different nanostructures were active for CO oxidation at temperatures beyond 250 degrees C and showed T-50 (50% conversion of CO) at 310 degrees C for the PAN catalysts, 340 degrees C for the nanopolyhedra catalyst, and 390 degrees C for the mesoporous catalyst.

Abstract:Due to tunable redox properties and cost-effectiveness, copper-ceria (Cu-CeO2 ) materials have been investigated for a wide scope of catalytic reactions. However, accurately identifying and rationally tuning the local structures in Cu-CeO2 have remained challenging, especially for nanomaterials with inherent structural complexities involving surfaces, interfaces, and defects. Here, a nanocrystal-based atom-trapping strategy to access atomically precise Cu-CeO2 nanostructures for enhanced catalysis is reported. Driven by the interfacial interactions between the presynthesized Cu and CeO2 nanocrystals, Cu atoms migrate and redisperse onto the CeO2 surface via a solid-solid route. This interfacial restructuring behavior facilitates tuning of the copper dispersion and the associated creation of surface oxygen defects on CeO2 , which gives rise to enhanced activities and stabilities catalyzing water-gas shift reaction. Combining soft and solid-state chemistry of colloidal nanocrystals provide a well-defined platform to understand, elucidate, and harness metal-support interactions. The dynamic behavior of the supported metal species can be further exploited to realize exquisite control and rational design of multicomponent nanocatalysts.
