Abstract:With the rapid popularity of cloud computing paradigm, disaster recovery using cloud resources becomes an attractive approach. This paper presents a practical multi-cloud based disaster recovery service model: DR-Cloud. With DR-Cloud, resources of multiple cloud service providers can be utilized cooperatively by the disaster recovery service provider. A simple and unified interface is exposed to the customers of DR-Cloud to adapt the heterogeneity of cloud service providers involved in the disaster recovery service, and the internal processes between clouds are invisible to the customers. DR-Cloud proposes multiple optimization scheduling strategies to balance the disaster recovery objectives, such as high data reliability, low backup cost, and short recovery time, which are also transparent to the customers. Different data scheduling strategies based on DR-Cloud are suitable for different kinds of data disaster recovery scenarios. Experimental results show that the DR-Cloud model can cooperate with cloud service providers with various parameters effectively, while its data scheduling strategies can achieve their optimization objectives efficiently and are widely applicable.

Abstract:Disaster recovery (DR) techniques ensure the data safety and service continuity under different natural and human-made disasters by constructing a high reliable storage system. Traditional disaster recovery methods are structure-dependent. It is hard to share the DR resources between different DR systems, which made it expensive. We present a structure-independent disaster recovery theory and its implementation methods in this paper. By backup the whole system but not just the data, the goal of device and application-independent disaster recovery has been achieved. We further present a parallel recovery model and an on demand data retrieval method based on the theory. Some implementation details of prototype recovery system are also discussed. With the methods independent from specific devices or applications, the cost of disaster recovery infrastructure can be essentially reduced by resource sharing. Experiments show that the recovery time has also been greatly shortened with little service degradation.

Abstract:The current enterprise information architecture is becoming more complex. As a result, user business data is lost or destroyed, services are interrupted, and systems crash, all of which harm users’ businesses. These factors include equipment failure, network attacks, and human error. Data disaster recovery has become an important method to ensure the sustainability of enterprise business. It is an inevitable trend toward disaster recovery services and technologies that “business in the cloud, cloud disaster recovery, and multi-cloud disaster recovery.” Traditional disaster recovery services systems and single-cloud disaster recovery services systems are unsatisfied with users’ current demands for business system deployment in multi-cloud environments, cloud resource sharing, and cross-cloud disaster recovery. We discuss the structure, composition, and functional ideas of a solution for a disaster recovery service system in multi-cloud environments. To provide cross-cloud disaster recovery management service in a multi-cloud environment with full-stack virtualization in response to user business requirements, it combines conventional disaster recovery technology, blockchain distributed multi-copy data storage and security audit, and system security state awareness.

Abstract:The fault-tolerance property in most cloud storage systems are designed within the scale of a single datacenter. The single datacenter as a whole may be unreachable or crashed due to severe problems, such as broken network links, power supply interruptions, and natural disasters, etc. Therefore, the design of an effective cross-datacenter fault-tolerant storage system is important to protect data security in the cloud. However, building a cross-datacenter fault-tolerant system faces great challenges, such as high latency, low throughput, high costs of bandwidth resources between datacenters. In this paper, we propose a practical cross-datacenter fault-tolerant (CDFT) algorithm in the cloud storage system. Our fault-tolerant algorithm design considers the difficult tradeoffs among fault tolerance, latency, throughput, network and storage costs. We propose the Domain Fault Codes (DFC) and the topology-aware scheduling techniques, which can tolerate the whole datacenter breakdown. We implemented the DFC-CDFT algorithm in a prototype cloud storage system. The experimental results showed that the proposed DFC-CDFT algorithm can effectively recover data blocks from the single datacenter failure while achieves low storage and bandwidth costs.
Smart-DRS: A Strategy of Dynamic Resource Scheduling in Cloud Data Center

Abstract:The biggest advantage of employing virtualization is the ability to flexibly remap physical resources to virtual servers in order to handle the resource redistribution. So virtual machine is the fundamental unit in cloud data center. However, the load of virtual machine constantly changes owing to the needs of applications. In order to improve the resource utilization and reduce power energy, data center needs an automatic, quick and dynamic resource scheduling strategy which treats virtual machine as a scheduling unit to balance load and consolidate servers. In this paper, we present a two-steps dynamic resource scheduling strategy, named Smart-DRS, which fits cloud data center well and strikes a balance between efficiency, cost and instantaneity. Firstly, we employ a prediction technique based on Single Exponential Smoothing algorithm. Then a novel and efficient migration algorithm based on Vector Projection was applied. For evaluating the performance of Smart-DRS, we develop a complete resource management prototype system in which resource scheduling is just only a module. Then we build a cluster with 32 physical machines running with 3200 virtual machines to simulate data center environment. Experiment results tell us that Smart-DRS has a high forecast accuracy and also can deal well with load balancing and load consolidation.

Abstract:To cope with the security challenges posed by providing disaster-recovery services on the cloud, a data disaster-recovery model is proposed based on a three-dimension data split scheme. This model presents higher security, data privacy and time efficiency than conventional security methods for cloud storage service. Besides, it will not bring too much extra costs on cloud storage resources. And taking storage price of Amazon S3 as an example, this model only costs less than 20 cents a month for extra storage price as the backup files are TB level.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss latest research on cloud disaster recovery systems based on an erasure code that reduces repairing bandwidth. We also discuss problems with repairing in cloud disaster recovery systems when there is storage node failure. Three models for addressing the repairing problem are proposed: exact repair, functional repair, and exact repair of systematic parts. In exact repair, the failed blocks are exactly regenerated. In functional repair, the newly generated blocks can contain data different to that of the failed node as long as the repaired system maintains the MDS code property. Exact repair of the systematic part is a hybrid repair model and lies between exact repair and functional repair.

Abstract:Cloud computing has rising as a new popular service paradigm with typical advantages as ease of use, unlimited resources and pay-as-you-go pricing model. Cloud resources are more flexible and cost-effective than private or colocation resources thus more suitable for storing the outdated backup data that are infrequently accessed by continuous data protection (CDP) systems. However, the cloud achieves low cost at the same time may slow down the recovery procedure due to its low bandwidth and high latency. In this paper, a novel block-level CDP system architecture: MYCDP is proposed to utilize cloud resources as the back-end storage. Unlike traditional delta-encoding based CDP approaches which should traverse all the dependent versions and decode the recovery point, MYCDP adopts data deduplication mechanism to eliminate data redundancy between all versions of all blocks, and constructs a version index for all versions of the protected storage, thus it can use a query-and-fetch process to recover version data. And with a specific version index data structure and a disk/memory hybrid cache module, MYCDP reduces the storage space consumption and data transfer between local and cloud. It also supports deletion of arbitrary versions without risk of invalidating some other versions. Experimental results demonstrate that MYCDP can achieve much lower cost than traditional local based CDP approaches, while remaining almost the same recovery speed with the local based deduplication approach for most recovery cases. Furthermore, MYCDP can obtain both faster recovery and lower cost than cloud based delta-encoding CDP approaches for any recovery points. And MYCDP gets more profits while protecting multiple systems together.

Abstract:Today, in every organization are generated in large volume of data in electronic format that required the safety storage services. Data backup and Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity issues are becoming fundamental in networks since the importance and societal value of digital data is continuously increasing. Every organization requires a business continuity plan (BCP) or disaster recovery plan (DRP) and data backup which falls within the cost constraints while achieving the target recovery requirements in terms of recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO). The organizations must identify the probable consequences that can cause disasters and evaluate their impact. There is an obvious need of supporting data for resilience against major failures; in many situations the process of storing backup data is also enforced by the law. The aim of this paper is to overview of various techniques in data backup and disaster recovery systems in the cloud environment.

Abstract:One of the many concerns of disaster recovery specialists is how to create disaster recovery scenarios, strategies and related solutions that meet the vision of management while building solutions for the critical business process within budget, with refined technical resources and operational and maintenance processes and procedures similar to those utilised in production. Rather than consider disaster recovery as a separate environment from production, this paper suggests that there are areas where the disaster recovery solution can map more closely to production solutions to better manifest the critical business process, avoiding the decreased sales forecasts and reputational impacts resulting from an outage. There is no magic here - just ideas for designing a solution and enhancements to the disaster recovery programme that may help to meet business expectations. A disaster recovery site based on similar production technical solutions and overall corporate IT vision can provide such benefits as: faster recovery time objective; faster availability of the data while maintaining data integrity; fewer manual procedures during switch/failover; ability to utilise similar resources to work both environments resulting in a smaller training programme; similar operational and maintenance processes and procedures; ability to switchover components rather than declaring disaster recovery; and an environment that supports production by running critical business process while production suffers an outage or requires maintenance. This paper provides readers with ideas to take back to their disaster recovery solution and how it manifests the critical business process during an outage.

Abstract:Cloud computing brings the potential to deliver flexibility, consolidation, and high resource utilization to data centers, and virtualization is the key layer. High resource utilization as well as high performance promised by virtualization largely depends on an effective and efficient resource management scheme. There is a great demand on building a multi-layered resource management mechanism via virtualization: using the characters of the virtual machine to build a predictive resource model and then export the allocation strategy, finally the resource can be allocated dynamically on demand. We should focus not only on the resource utilization rate on the physical machines, but also the change of resource demand while running for the application on the virtual machines. The final target is to get a suit of virtual resource management technology, which could be widely used in the static deployment, dynamic prediction, and resource management between virtual machines or physical machines, to support the cloud computing powerfully.

Abstract:Cloud computing technology incorporates asymmetric hardware equipments and establishes the basis of providing constant and efficient service to the users .In this paper ,intrigued from the redundancy backup strategy ,we design a cloud storage mechanism which can tolerate hardware or software failures so as to ensure the reliability of the content cloud system while dis -tributing the contents efficiently .Adopting this mechanism ,the system can still operate smoothly in the presence of a fixed number of hardware or software failures ,and if the number of failures is larger than that ,the mechanism can protect the system from mas-sive breakdowns .Afterwards ,through experiments we compare several kinds of storage technologies ,and validate that our technol-ogy takes advantages in storage efficiency and fault tolerance .

Abstract:Public clouds favor sharing of storage resources, in which many tenants acquire bandwidth and storage capacity from a shared storage pool. To provide high availability, data are often encoded to provide fault tolerance with low storage costs. Regarding this, efficiently organizing an encoded storage system for shared I/Os is critical for application performance. This is usually hard to achieve as different applications have different stripe configurations and fault tolerance levels. In this paper, we first study the block trace from the Alibaba cloud, and find that I/O patterns of modern applications prefer the resource sharing scheme. Based on this, we propose a globally shared-resource paradigm for encoded storage system in the public cloud. The globally shared resource paradigm can provide balanced load and fault tolerance for numerous disk pool sizes and arbitrary application stripe configurations. Furthermore, we demonstrate with two case studies that our theory can help address the device-specific problems of HDD and SSD RAID arrays with slight modifications: comparing the existing resource partition and resource sharing methods, our theory can promote the rebuild speed of the HDD RAID arrays by 2.5×, and reduce the P99 tail latency of the SSD arrays by up to two orders of magnitude.

Abstract:The digital transformation disrupts the various professional domains in different ways, though one aspect is common: the unified platform known as cloud computing. Corporate solutions, IoT systems, analytics, business intelligence, and numerous tools, solutions and systems use cloud computing as a global platform. The migrations to the cloud are increasing, causing it to face new challenges and complexities. One of the essential segments is related to data storage. Data storage on the cloud is neither simplistic nor conventional; rather, it is becoming more and more complex due to the versatility and volume of data. The inspiration of this research is based on the development of a framework that can provide a comprehensive solution for cloud computing storage in terms of replication, and instead of using formal recovery channels, erasure coding has been proposed for this framework, which in the past proved itself as a trustworthy mechanism for the job. The proposed framework provides a hybrid approach to combine the benefits of replication and erasure coding to attain the optimal solution for storage, specifically focused on reliability and recovery. Learning and training mechanisms were developed to provide dynamic structure building in the future and test the data model. RAID architecture is used to formulate different configurations for the experiments. RAID-1 to RAID-6 are divided into two groups, with RAID-1 to 4 in the first group while RAID-5 and 6 are in the second group, further categorized based on FTT, parity, failure range and capacity. Reliability and recovery are evaluated on the rest of the data on the server side, and for the data in transit at the virtual level. The overall results show the significant impact of the proposed hybrid framework on cloud storage performance. RAID-6c at the server side came out as the best configuration for optimal performance. The mirroring for replication using RAID-6 and erasure coding for recovery work in complete coherence provide good results for the current framework while highlighting the interesting and challenging paths for future research.

Abstract:Purpose: This study sought to explore the impact of cloud computing on business continuity and disaster recovery. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library. Findings: The findings reveal that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to cloud computing on business continuity and disaster recovery. Preliminary empirical review revealed that cloud computing significantly enhanced organizational resilience and recovery capabilities by providing scalable, flexible, and cost-efficient solutions. It highlighted that while cloud-based solutions reduced recovery times and minimized operational downtime, organizations needed to address challenges related to data security, regulatory compliance, and integration with existing systems. The effectiveness of these solutions varied depending on factors such as cloud deployment type and organizational needs. Overall, the study affirmed that cloud computing offered substantial benefits for disaster recovery but required a thoughtful approach to integration and management. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The Resource-Based View (RBV) Theory, Contingency Theory and Dynamic Capabilities Theory may be used to anchor future studies on cloud computing on business continuity and disaster recovery. The study recommended that organizations develop tailored cloud-based disaster recovery solutions aligned with their specific needs and risk profiles. It advocated for the creation of industry-specific guidelines and standards to address challenges such as data sovereignty and vendor lock-in, and for policymakers to streamline regulatory requirements. The study also suggested that organizations adopt a phased approach to cloud implementation, conduct thorough risk assessments, and establish robust management practices. Future research was encouraged to explore the long-term impacts of cloud computing on disaster recovery and to investigate the role of emerging technologies in enhancing cloud-based solutions.
