Abstract:It is a more convenient way to use vibration signals for the fault diagnosis of diesel engine since such signals contain a lot of useful information which can reflect the status of the diesel engine.Considering the characteristics of the cylinder head vibration signals,the empirical mode decomposition was used to decompose the signals obtained,the main IMFs of signals were selected to approximately replace the original signals,and their Marginal spectrums,gravity frequency,center of gravity amplitude,skewness and kurtosis were used as the feature vector of the status of the diesel engine.Based on BP neural network,the diesel engine fault diagnosis was conducted applying vectors obtained in the method presented in this paper.Diagnostic accuracy rate reached above 85%,which verified the feasibility of the method.

Abstract:Based on virtual instrument technology, the fault diagnosis system for diesel engine was developed. Its digital treatment system was consisted of sensors and PCI-6023E collectors, its design software was LABVIEW6. 0. This system character parameters were defined by engine's typical faults. In this system, the collected data were treated with BP neural network to diagnose engine's faults. The tested results show that this system is feasiable. 2 tabs, 6 figs, 9 refs.

Abstract:As the core of power machinery, diesel engines often work in harsh environments. Considering the non-linearity variation and divergence in feature distribution among different operating conditions or types of engines, it is time-consuming and impracticable to collect adequate fault-labelled datasets, therefore a novel fault diagnosis approach is proposed for diesel engine valve leakage fault diagnosis to transfer from one operating condition or type (source domain) to another (target domain) to enhance the generalization of fault diagnosis. The acoustic emission signals for a specified time interval are used as the input of a one-dimensional convolutional neural network to extract discriminative features, three domain-adaptive algorithms are applied to form fault diagnosis models and compare them. The fault simulation experimental results illustrate that the proposed method achieves high accuracy in fault diagnosis across-operating condition and across-engine-type, and the generalisation performance of the proposed method outperformed that of traditional ones.

Abstract:Based on the techniques of sound intensity analysis, incomplete wavelet packet analysis (WPA) and artificial neural network (ANN), a WPA pre-processing method for noise-based engine fault diagnosis (EFD), so-called WPA–ANN model, is presented in this paper. The noises of an EFI gasoline engine under normal and fault states are measured and their contours of sound intensity level (SIL) are calculated by interpolation approach to initially investigate the possibility of a SIL-based EFD. Furthermore, an incomplete WPA model, which consists of a five-level discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and a four-level WPA, is developed and applied to the measured noise signals for extracting fault features of the engine, as is a multi-layered ANN model for engine failure classification by using the extracted features of the noises. To verify the proposed approach, the WPA–ANN model is extended to recognize other noise-related faults of the engine. The results suggest that the noise-based WPA–ANN models are effective for engine fault diagnosis. Due to its time–frequency characteristics and pattern recognition capacity, the WPA–ANN can be used to process both the stationary and nonstationary signals. In view of the applications, the proposed WPA–ANN model can be directly used in vehicle EFDs, and may be extended to other sound-related fields for failure diagnosis in engineering.

Abstract:The diesel engine has been a significant component of large-scale mechanical systems for the intelligent manufacturing industry. Because of its complex structure and poor working environment, it has trouble effectively acquiring the representative fault features. Further, fault diagnosis of the diesel engine faces great challenges. This paper presents a new fault diagnosis method for the detection of diesel engine faults under multiple operation conditions instead of conventional methods confined to a single condition. First, an adaptive correlation threshold process is designed as a preprocessing unit to enhance data quality by weakening non-impact region characteristics. Next, a feature extraction method for sound signals based on the Mel frequency cepstrum (MFC) is improved and introduced into the machinery fault diagnosis. Then, the combination of the improved feature and vibrational mode decomposition (VMD) is proposed to incorporate VMD into an effective adaptive decomposition of non-stationary signals to combine it with an excellent feature representation of the vibration signal. Finally, the vector quantization algorithm is adopted to reduce the feature dimensions and generate codebook model bases, which trains the K-Nearest Neighbor classifiers. Five comparative methods were carried out, and the experimental results show that the proposed method offers a good effect of the common valve clearance fault of diesel engines under different conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of diesel engines are of great significance for safety production and maintenance cost control. The digital twin method based on data-driven and physical model fusion has attracted more and more attention. However, the existing methods lack deeper integration and optimization facing complex physical systems. Most of the algorithms based on deep learning transform the data into the substitution of the physical model. The lack of interpretability of the deep learning diagnosis model limits its practical application. The attention mechanism is gradually developed to access interpretability. In this study, a digital twin auxiliary approach based on adaptive sparse attention network for diesel engine fault diagnosis is proposed with considering its signal characteristics of strong angle domain correlation and transient non-stationary, in which a new soft threshold filter is designed to draw more attention to multi decentralized local fault information dynamically in real time. Based on this attention mechanism, the distribution of fault information in the original signal can be better visualized to help explain the fault mechanism. The valve failure experiment on a diesel engine test rig is conducted, of which the results show that the proposed adaptive sparse attention mechanism model has better training efficiency and clearer interpretability on the premise of maintaining performance.

Abstract:Diesel engines have a wide range of functions in the industrial and military fields. An urgent problem to be solved is how to diagnose and identify their faults effectively and timely. In this paper, a diesel engine acoustic fault diagnosis method based on variational modal decomposition mapping Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) and long-short-term memory network is proposed. Variational mode decomposition (VMD) is used to remove noise from the original signal and differentiate the signal into multiple modes. The sound pressure signals of different modes are mapped to the Mel filter bank in the frequency domain, and then the Mel frequency cepstral coefficients of the respective mode signals are calculated in the mapping range of frequency domain, and the optimized Mel frequency cepstral coefficients are used as the input of long and short time memory network (LSTM) which is trained and verified, and the fault diagnosis model of the diesel engine is obtained. The experimental part compares the fault diagnosis effects of different feature extraction methods, different modal decomposition methods and different classifiers, finally verifying the feasibility and effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper, and providing solutions to the problem of how to realise fault diagnosis using acoustic signals.

Abstract:Due to the relative insufficiencies of conventional time-domain waveform and spectrum analysis in fault diagnosis research, a diesel engine fault diagnosis method based on the Stacked Sparse Autoencoder and the Support Vector Machine is proposed in this study. The method consists of two main steps. The first step is to utilize the Stacked Sparse Autoencoder (SSAE) to reduce the feature dimension of the multi-sensor vibration information; when compared with other dimension reduction methods, this approach can better capture nonlinear features, so as to better cope with dimension reduction. The second step consists of diagnosing faults, implementing the grid search, and K-fold cross-validation to optimize the hyperparameters of the SVM method, which effectively improves the fault classification effect. By conducting a preset failure experiment for the diesel engine, the proposed method achieves an accuracy rate of more than 98%, better engineering application, and promising outcomes.

Abstract:Fault diagnosis can improve the safety and reliability of diesel engines. An end-to-end method based on a multi-attention convolutional neural network (MACNN) is proposed for accurate and efficient diesel engine fault diagnosis. By optimizing the arrangement and kernel size of the channel and spatial attention modules, the feature extraction capability is improved, and an improved convolutional block attention module (ICBAM) is obtained. Vibration signal features are acquired using a feature extraction model alternating between the convolutional neural network (CNN) and ICBAM. The feature map is recombined to reconstruct the sequence order information. Next, the self-attention mechanism (SAM) is applied to learn the recombined sequence features directly. A Swish activation function is introduced to solve "Dead ReLU" and improve the accuracy. A dynamic learning rate curve is designed to improve the convergence ability of the model. The diesel engine fault simulation experiment is carried out to simulate three kinds of fault types (abnormal valve clearance, abnormal rail pressure, and insufficient fuel supply), and each kind of fault varies in different degrees. The comparison results show that the accuracy of MACNN on the eight-class fault dataset at different speeds is more than 97%. The testing time of the MACNN is much less than the machine running time (for one work cycle). Therefore, the proposed end-to-end fault diagnosis method has a good application prospect.

Abstract:A new engine fault diagnosis model based on sound intensity signal and BP neural network integration was proposed. Firstly, the sound intensity signals were decomposed and recomposed by using wavelet packets. Afterwards, the signal energy values were extracted from each frequency band, and were used as input features into the BP neural network integration for fault pattern recognition. It has been testified by the experimentation of the 3Y Toyota 2.0 engine and the results showed that it could increase the efficiency and accuracy of the system.

Abstract:When the vibration of diesel engine structure is measured, the signal is composed of a very complex superposition of the contributions of different vibratory sources modified by their respective transmission paths. These sources originate from several internal phenomenon in the engine such as combustion pressure variation, unbalanced reciprocating and rotating parts. In a diesel engine, movement parts work in a specific order. Once the starting point is determined, occurrence of work order in different cycle phases can be determined. This could successfully use to identifying of impulses in complex vibration signal of a diesel engine. From the variation of features of those impulses, it is possible to determine the working condition of the engine. This can use to fault diagnosis of diesel engine, specially faults related to combustion process.

Abstract:The safe operation of diesel engines performs a vital function in industrial production and life. Because diesel engines often work in harsh environmental conditions, they are prone to failure. Therefore, this paper proposes a fault analysis method based on a combination of optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD) and improved convolutional neural networks (CNN) to address the necessary need for preventive maintenance of diesel engines. The authentic vibration sign is first decomposed by using the (VMD) algorithm, then the greatest range of decomposition layers is decided by using scattering entropy and the useful components are preferentially chosen for reconstruction. The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) records preprocessing method is then delivered to radically change the noise-reduced vibration sign into a time-frequency map, which is fed into the CNN for model coaching and extraction of fault features. Finally, fault classification is realized by support vector machine (SVM) with excellent classification performance. Through preset fault experiments on diesel engines, it is established that the technique proposed in this paper can successfully identify fault states, and the classification accuracy is higher than alternative methods.

Abstract:Vibration technique provides useful information in fault detection of diesel engine, bringing significant cost benefits to diesel engine condition monitoring. Usually, time-frequency calculation on vibration signal is so complex that it is difficult to achieve online fault detection. In this paper, a method of fault detection in diesel engine is developed based on symmetrical polar coordinates and image recognition. In this method, time-domain waveform of vibration signal is transformed into snowflake-shaped in mirror symmetry pattern without time-frequency analysis. By the comparison of the geometric features of the snowflake images from different wear conditions of crankshaft bearing in diesel engines, we use centroid position and direction angle of the petal in snowflake image as features to detect the fault. Then, fuzzy c-means (FCM) are used to detect the conditions of the engine according to these features. In order to validate the methods, some experiments have been performed, the experimental results show that the centroid position and direction angle of the petal in snowflake image can reflect the information of different wear conditions in crankshaft bearing, and the fault of crankshaft bearing can be detected accurately. Hence, the method can work as fault detection in diesel engine, which is simple and effective, compared with time-frequency calculation method.

Abstract:In order to improve the accuracy of engine valve clearance fault diagnosis, in this study, a fault identification algorithm based on wavelet packet decomposition and an artificial neural network is proposed. Firstly, the vibration signals of the engine cylinder head were collected, and different levels of noise were superimposed on the extended data sets. Then, the test data were decomposed into wavelet packets, and the power spectrum of the sub-band signal was analyzed using the autoregressive power spectrum density estimation method. A group of values were obtained from the power spectrum integration to form the fault eigenvalue. Finally, a neural network model was designed to classify the fault eigenvalues. In the training process, the test data set was divided into three parts, the training set, the verification set, and the test set, and the dropout layer was added to avoid the overfitting phenomenon of the neural network. The experimental results show that the wavelet packet neural network model in this paper has a good diagnostic accuracy for data with different levels of noise.

Abstract:This paper presents a condition monitoring and combustion fault detection technique for a 12-cylinder 588 kW trainset diesel engine based on vibration signature analysis using fast Fourier transform, discrete wavelet transform, and artificial neural network. Most of the conventional fault diagnosis techniques in diesel engines are mainly based on analyzing the difference of vibration signals amplitude in the time domain or frequency spectrum. Unfortunately, for complex engines, the time- or frequency-domain approaches do not provide appropriate features solely. In the present study, vibration signals are captured from both intake manifold and cylinder heads of the engine and were analyzed in time-, frequency-, and time–frequency domains. In addition, experimental data of a 12-cylinder 588 kW diesel engine (of a trainset) are captured and the proposed method is verified via these data. Results show that power spectra of vibration signals in the low-frequency range reliably distinguish between normal and faulty conditions. However, they cannot identify the fault location. Hence, a feature extraction method based on discrete wavelet transform and energy spectrum is proposed. The extracted features from discrete wavelet transform are used as inputs in a neural network for classification purposes according to the location of sensors and faults. The experimental results verified that vibration signals acquired from intake manifold have more potential in fault detection. In addition, the capacity of discrete wavelet transform and artificial neural network in detection and diagnosis of faulty cylinders subjected to the abnormal fuel injection was revealed in a complex diesel engine. Beside condition monitoring of the engine, a two-step fault detection method is proposed, which is more reliable than other one-step methods for complex engines. The average condition monitoring performance is from 93.89% up to 99.17%, based on fault location and sensor placement, and the minimum classification performance is 98.34%.

Abstract:Abstract As the source of power, internal combustion engine is widely used. Because the structure of internal combustion engine is complex and the working condition is bad, the possibility of failure is great. The condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of internal combustion engine can discover and eliminate the faults in time, and ensure the safety and reliability of the operation process. With the rapid progress of machine learning technology, fault diagnosis system is gradually moving towards intelligent development. The enesmble learning uses different methods to change the distribution of the original training samples, so as to build multiple different classifiers, and combine these classifiers to get a stronger classifier to make the final decision. In this paper, through the simulation model of 7k98mc diesel engine to simulate the normal and fault conditions of diesel engine, the ensemble learning algorithm is verified. The results show that the ensemble learning algorithm has higher accuracy and better stability than shallow classifiers.

Abstract:Digital real-time fault diagnosis is an effective way to ensure the reliable long-term operation of the diesel engine , but there is still a lack of systematic methods with high integrity and practicability. Therefore, a digital twin-driven diesel engine fault diagnosis method based on the combination of the classification algorithm and the optimization algorithm is proposed and a case study of fuel injection system fault diagnosis is used to illustrate and verify the proposed method. This method closely links the physical system, virtual model, database, and diagnosis system through data transmission and the diagnostic process consists of three parts: classification, diagnosis, and decision. The fault classification part can preliminarily lock the possible types and degrees of faults, and point out the key classification features for each fault type by using classification algorithms such as Random Forest . The fault diagnosis part can diagnose and reproduce the diesel engine faults by using an optimization-simulation joint calculation model, where the virtual model variables and optimization algorithm are determined according to the possible fault types, and the optimization target depends on the importance of classification features. Then the maintenance decision can be made according to the fault detailed information. The proposed method reduces the requirement of covering the fault degree of the database, and the obtained fault model provides the possibility for subsequent online optimization and also facilitates the development of intelligent engine management.

Abstract:his paper reports a practical approach for detecting and diagnose engine faults in real-time based on both the historical and the real-time engine operation data using a specially design neural networks-based fault diagnosis expert system. This system consisted of multiple sensors for real-time monitoring, an engine database for historic data comparison, and a neural network-bases classifier for detecting faults based on both the real-time and the historic data. This neural network-based engine fault diagnosis system was evaluated in a series of validation tests. The results indicated that the system was capable to detect the predefined faults reliably, and the diagnosis error was less than 5%.
