Abstract:We discuss how all-optical signal processing might play a role in future all-optical packet switched networks. We introduce a concept of optical packet switches that employ entirely all-optical signal processing technology. The optical packet switch is made out of three functional blocks: the optical header processing block, the optical memory block and the wavelength conversion block. The operation principle of the optical packet switch is explained. We show that these three functional blocks can be realized by using the nonlinearities of semiconductor optical amplifiers. Some technologies in these three functional blocks are described. The header processor is realized using a Terahertz Optical Asymmetric Demultiplexer. We also describe a header pre-processor to improve the extinction ratio of the header processor output. In the optical memory block, we show that an all-optical memory can be obtained by using two coupled lasers that form a master-slave configuration. The state of the optical memory is distinguished by the wavelength of the master laser. We extend the concept to an optical memory can have multiple states. In the wavelength conversion block, we demonstrate a 160 Gbit/s wavelength conversion using a single semiconductor optical amplifier in combination with a well-designed optical bandpass filter. The semiconductor optical amplifier has a gain recovery time greater than 90 ps, which corresponds to a less than 20 GHz bandwidth for conventional wavelength conversion. We show that by properly using the optical bandpass filter, ultrafast dynamics in the semiconductor optical amplifier can be employed for wavelength conversion at ultrahigh bit-rates.

Abstract:We will describe recent results in all-optical packet switching with all-optical header processing using Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LD). First, we will report an all-optical header processor and control signal generator using a single FP-LD with a special two-intensity-level control signal and a novel self-routing address format for the data packets. We then show that the special control signal can be generated by direct modulation of a DFB laser with square electrical pulses thus simplifying implementation. We will demonstrate that a single Fabry-Perot laser diode can also serve as an all-optical on/off switch with all-optical header processing. The header rate is 5 Gb/s and the payload rate is 10 Gb/s. The all-optical on/off switch can also be realized by using a FP-LD as the header processor only and executing the packet switching at a separate stage. The two-stage implementation of all-optical on/off switch eliminates the residue header bits problems if only a single FP-LD is used. Finally, we propose an all-optical packet-switched ring network which can be constructed from the all-optical on/off switches demonstrated.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an optical node with time-space-and- wavelength domain contention resolution, deflection and dropping capability. The node is composed of an optical buffer based on an optical crossconnect and a wavelength converter. Although the experimental results are shown at 10 Gbit/s the bitrate can be increased substantially. Bit-error rate measurements are shown, sustaining only 3.5 dB power penalty after 10mus of optical buffering and agile wavelength conversion over 18nm span.

Abstract:A high-performance packet switch is discussed which uses a photonic interconnect fabric to route very-wideband data packets from input to output. Packet contention is accomplished using a much slower electronic controller, based on the knockout principle operating in parallel with the optical interconnect. Specifically, the use of a wavelength-division-multiplex fabric whereby high-speed (2-4 Gb/s) packets are regenerated before modulating a single-frequency laser at each switch input. The optical signals from various inputs are summed in a star coupler and then broadcast to the different coupler outputs. Each coupler is equipped with a small number (L) of tunable receivers arranged in a parallel manner, each preceded by a power splitter so that up to L simultaneous packets can be received by each output. The L packets so received are stored in an L-input one-output first-in first-out (FIFO) buffer so that the FIFO packet sequence is always guaranteed. Not only does this architecture achieve the best delay-throughput performance, but, remarkably, modularity is such that the optical complexity grows linearly with the number of switch ports./.<>

Abstract:Optical packet switching (OPS) is a rapidly growing research field for next-generation data transmission. The core router/switch performs an essential role in packet routing and buffering in OPS. Due to cyclic nature and low insertion loss, Arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is more commonly used in optical switches. When the switch is placed in the network, there is a need to add or drop packets to allow the optical network system to have greater connectivity and flexibility. In high-bit-rate optical networks, all-optical add-drop switches are a necessary element. An add-drop optical packet switch architecture based on AWG is proposed in this paper. For buffering contending packets, optical buffering using Fiber Delay Lines (FDLs) is used. The performance of the proposed add-drop switch is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER). For acceptable limits of BER (BER ≤ 10–9 and BER ≤ 10–12), the minimum power needed for proper switch operation is determined. Finally, the performance of the switch is evaluated for the network layer parameter, i.e., in terms of packet loss probability (PLP). The proposed add-drop switch is also compared with the recently published design to show its advantage over the published design.

In this paper, two novel structures of optical packet switching nodes are put forward, and the switching capacity of the node and the packet contention resolution are analyzed. Abstract:In this paper, a new type of re-configurable all optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) with dynamic gain control function is presented. The channel spacing of the input four-wavelength WDM signal is 3.2nm The function of adding and dropping any wavelength component of the signal is demonstrated. The total loss is less than 1dB (The gain of each SOA is set to about 6dB). Under the control of the gain management unit (GMU), the difference of each channel is less than 0.3dB. Due to the transparency of the OADM, it can add/drop different kinds (such as different format or bit rate) of optical signal. In this paper, we also presented the experimental setup and discussed its results. The highest test bit rate of the WDM signal is 2.5Gbit/s. Its applications in the WDM all optical networks are also discussed.

Abstract:The performance of an optical switching network is mainly determined by its core node structure. An improved optical packet switching (OPS) node structure based on recirculation optical fiber delay line (FDL) and feedback tunable wavelength converter (TWC), and a specific scheduling algorithm for the node structure are presented. This switching structure supports both point-to-point and point-to-multi-points broadcasting transmission with superior capacity expansion performance. Its superiority in packet loss probability is proved by simulation.

Abstract:We present some progress in the field of optical signal processing that could be; utilized in all-optical packet switching. We demonstrate error-free 160 Gb/s optical wavelength conversion employing a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The gain recovery time of the semiconductor optical amplifier is greater than 90 ps. Assisted by an optical bandpass filter, an effective recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in the wavelength converter, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation. This optical wavelength converter can be controlled by a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory to route 80 Gb/s data-packets all-optically. The routing is realized without electronic control. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two-coupled lasers, exhibits single-mode operation, has 35 dB contrast ratio between the states and switches state in about 2 ns. We demonstrate that the integrated flip-flop is able to control the optical wavelength converter up to 160 Gb/s. The system is capable of routing 80 Gb/s data packets with duration of 35 ns, separated by 15 ns of guard time.

Abstract:Optical packet switching has received considerable attention over the last few years. In this paper we discus how optical signal processing can play a role in photonic packet routing. Two examples are given. Firstly we discuss ultrafast wavelength switching at 160 Gbit/s in a single semiconductor optical amplifier. Secondly, an integrated photonic flip-flop is discussed. Finally a discussion is given about potential opportunities and limitations of optics in packet switched nodes.
