Abstract:Bandwidth smoothing algorithms have been shown to be effective in reducing the network resource requirements for the delivery of compressed video streams. For stored video, a large number of bandwidth smoothing algorithms have been introduced that are optimal under certain constraints. These algorithms, however, require access to all the frame sizes to achieve their optimal properties, which, in turn, can limit responsiveness of video-on- demand systems especially u nder VCR functions. In this paper, we introduce a movie approximation technique for the representation of the frame sizes, reducing the complex- ity of the bandwidth smoothing algorithms and reducing the amount of data and computa- tion that must be transmitted p rior to the start of playback. Our results s how that the proposed approximation technique ca n accurately approximate the frame sizes with a small number of linear segments without affecting the performance measures that t he bandwidth smoothing algorithms are attempting to achieve by more than 1%. In addition, we show that implementations of this techniques speed up execution times by 100 to 1400 times, with typical approximated b andwidth smoothing p lan calculations for f ull-length movies requiring less than 20 milliseconds. Evaluation using both a Motion-JPEG and MPEG video clip are provided.
