Abstract:In this paper a design off our wheeled omnidirectional vehicle is presented and its kinematic and dynamic model is developed The motion equation of this system is non-linear and hard to deal with in applications where fast trajectory generation is needed with modest computation resource. Therefore a special design that the vehicle's motion equation can be simplified is proposed. With a set of constraints being satisfied, the system is greatly simplified and a near time-optimal bang-bang trajectory can be calculated with great computational efficiency.

Abstract:Compared with traditional mobile robots, the wheel-legged mobile robot has outstanding environmental adaptability and obstacle-crossing performance, which has gradually become a research hotspot. This paper proposes a six-wheel-legged mobile robot consisting of six legs and six wheels, six driving motors and six steering motors for omnidirectional movement, double rocker mechanism and double parallel suspension mechanism give the robot a good ability to overcome obstacles and load capacity. The basic structure concept of the robot and motor selection of the robot are introduced. Also, analysis of the mobile robot is focused on its climbing movement and steering locomotion process. Theoretical analysis shows that the robot can overcome a 30° slope or steps, as well as good plane steering maneuverability.

Abstract:A new six legged robot for rugged terrain of deep-space exploration is developed. This robot consists of a special steering mechanism which includes two parallel mechanisms. It can reduce the difficulty of control, turn a random angle and realize the pivot steering without the motion of foothold. The gaits of straight going and omnibearing steering are planned. Finally through the kinematics, dynamics simulation and walking experiments, the robot's performances such as mobility, stability and trafficability, have been verified with great satisfaction.

Abstract:Six-legged robots are reliable locomotive machines with actuation redundancy. This paper analyzes the force and velocity capacities of a six-legged high-payload robot geometrically and numerically. The full-body Jacobian between the body platform and the actuation is first of all computed. A geometric computation approach is then proposed to obtain the robot velocity/force polytopes in the platform operational space. System physical constraints of joint torques and velocities are taken into account so that the task space capacities could be quantitatively given. Besides, several capacity indices are also investigated, including the maximum velocity/force magnitude, the maximum velocity/force along a given direction and the maximum isotropic velocity/force. At last, the robot capacities are numerically analyzed with different supporting legs. The results verify high payload capacity of the robot and clarify the influence of different gait parameters on the task space performance. Our method is proposed in a general and convenient framework, and therefore it is beneficial for the quantitative performance evaluation of any multi-legged walking machine with actuation redundancy.

Abstract:Legged robot has advantages with high degree of freedom, flexibility and strong adaptability to the ground. So this paper presents a posture in concave ground environment of a leg organization of a six-legged robot and proposes a gait planning of six-legged robot, which ensure it to move smoothly and efficiently. Using homogeneous and rotational homogeneous transformation to analyze the kinematics model of standing leg and swinging leg, and then calculate the kinematics equation. It lays the foundation for the further study of the motion control of robot.
Locomotion Speed Capability Analysis of Six-Legged Robots: Optimization and Application

Abstract:Locomotion speed is a key performance index of legged robots. However, methods to analyze and improve the locomotion speed capability are seldom developed, especially for six-legged robots. This paper develops a method to analyze and improve the omnidirectional walking speed and the turning speed of six-legged robots. The models of the inverse kinematics and the influence coefficients are built. Making use of the only-position-related property of the influence coefficients, a general optimization model of the locomotion trajectory is established. A two-step optimization method is introduced to solve the optimization problem. Based on the optimization, a comprehensive speed capability analysis is conducted on both omnidirectional walking and turning of the six-parallel-legged robot. The results clearly show the relationships among the speed capability, the walking direction and the duty cycle. The two-step optimization method improves the speed capability by 12.4%–13.2% for turning and 18.5%–20.5% for omnidirectional walking. Finally, the costs of the speed improvement are analyzed, including the stability, the energy consumption and the calculation time.

Abstract:In complex real-world scenarios, wheel-legged robots with maneuverability, stability, and reliability have addressed growing research attention, especially in material transportation, emergency rescue, as well as the exploration of unknown environments. How to achieve stable high-level movement with payload delivery simultaneously is the main challenge for the wheel-legged robot. In this article, a novel hierarchical framework for the flexible motion of the six wheel-legged robot is considered in experimental results. First, for the wheeled motion, the speed consensus algorithm is implemented to the six-wheeled cooperative control; for the legged motion, three gait sequences, and foot-end trajectory based on the Bezier function are designed. Furthermore, a whole-body control architecture includes the attitude controller, impedance controller, and center height controller is developed for obstacle avoidance, which can ensure the horizontal stability of the body of the robot when it passes through obstacles in different terrain. Finally, extensive experimental demonstrations using the six wheel-legged robot (BIT-6NAZA) are dedicated to the effectiveness and robustness of the developed framework, indicating that it is a superior case of a selectable flexible motion with satisfactory stable performance under the field world environment.

Abstract:Dynamic locomotion plays a crucial role for legged robots to fulfill tasks in unstructured environments. This paper proposes whole-body kinematic and dynamic modeling method s based on screw theory for a quadruped robot using different gaits and mechanism topologies. Unlike simplified models such as centroid or inverse pendulum models, the methods proposed here can handle 10-dimensional mass and inertia for each part. The only simplification is that foot contact models are treated as spherical joints. Models of three different mechanism topologies are formulated: (1) Standing phase: a system consisting of one end-effector, the body, and four limbs, the legs; (2) Walking phase: a system consisting of one or two lifting legs (depending on the chosen gait), two or three supporting legs; (3) Floating phase: a system in which all legs detach from the ground. Control strategies based on our models are also introduced, which includes walk and trot gait plans. In our control system, two additional types of information are provided: (1) contacting forces are given by force sensors installed under feet; (2) body poses are determined by an inertial measurement unit (IMU). Combined with the sensor data and calibrated mass, inertia, and friction, the joint torque can be estimated accurately in simulation and experiment. Our prototype, the “XiLing” robot, is built to verify the methods proposed in this paper, and the results show that the models can be solved quickly and leads to steady locomotions.

Abstract:In order to realize the traffic capacity in complex environments, this paper proposes a new omnidirectional six-wheel-Iegged mobile robot, which is composed of double crank climbing mechanism, parallelogram rotating mechanism and balancing mechanism. From the possible instability of parallelogram rotating mechanism, factors such as slope angle, friction coefficient, and direction of friction influencing the anti-overturning ability of the robot in downhill process are analyzed in detail. Then virtual prototype of the robot is established by using MSC.Adams, in which the dynamics simulation in downhill process is carried out. Through theoretical analysis and simulation of the mobile robot, the pre-tightening force of spring to maintain the balance of the robot's body is obtained.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new hybrid (parallel–serial) 6-DOF lower limb rehabilitation robot including two mechanical legs and an adjustable seat, which could train in sitting, lying and standing three postures. Each mechanical leg consists of hip joint, knee joint and ankle joint. The dynamics and DOF of the robot are analysed, and the result is verified by the software ADAMS. The result lay the foundation for prototype build in future.

Abstract:Abstract. In this paper, a leg structure of quadruped robot was designed, based on mechanism synthesis, and aims to allow a system for the complex control of a quadruped robot. This structure is composed of a crank linkage mechanism and quadrilateral mechanism. The innovativeness of this robot is that it can achieve a special gait driven only by single motor. In this research, we set up the kinematic model of leg mechanism through an analytic method. Then we draw the foot track of multiple groups of parameters and select the best parameter group by comparing multiple groups of parameters. After that, the robot model was built and analyzed for its walking ability and climbing ability with virtual prototype technology. Finally, we made an experimental prototype to trial the motion ability of the robot. Simulation and experimental analysis prove that the mechanism is reasonable, reliable and can meet the requirements of linear walking and climbing. The conclusions of this research will be useful for application in the field of single actuated quadruped robots.

Abstract:In this paper, we made an improved design on the traditional quadruped robot structure and developed a new small wheel-legged mobile robot structure. It has four legged configurations, which can be selected according to different situations, improving the mobility and operability of the robot. In wheeled mode, the robot can adjust its center of gravity according to actual needs. Including the rotational degree of freedom of the wheel, each leg has four degrees of freedom. Each leg adopts a series structure and moves the knee drive motor to the fuselage position using a parallel four-link mechanism and is symmetrically arranged with the hip drive motor. A wheel is installed at the end of the shank, and a DC brushless motor is built inside it, enabling the robot to have the function of wheeled motion. This article introduces the details of the wheel-legged robot, emphasizing the innovative design of the physical structure and the diversity of deformation. The forward kinematics was analyzed. Based on the full-elbow configuration (a type of legged configuration), a cycloidal motion optimization simulation was completed for the single leg structure. Simulation experiment has proven that the optimized robot’s single leg motion is smoother. Finally, we conducted a typical experiment using an embedded controller to control single leg motion. The experimental results verify that the optimized cycloidal motion of the robot meets the desired motion effect.

Abstract:Bio-inspired biped robots require high level dynamic control when walking or jumping. Compared with 4 or 6 legged robots, mechanisms of biped robots are more complicated and have more DOFs, which means both kinematical and dynamic models are more complex. In this paper, we formulated the kinematic models of ostrich bionic biped robot, which apply serial-parallel hybrid mechanism with 13 joints (5 active, 8 passive) each leg. The mechanism topology patterns are analyzed during walking, jumping and standing. We defined the feet as 5-DOFs end-effectors and both forward and inverse kinematic models are formulated using screw theory. An ordinary walking gait based on inverted pendulum was used to test the models and the results show that the robot can walk very well in simulation environments. The research of this paper has obvious application significance for the design, iteration and control of ostrich bionic biped robot.
Leg Kinematic Analysis and Prototype Experiments of Walking-Operating Multifunctional Hexapod Robot

Abstract:This paper presents kinematic analysis of a 3-degree of freedom parallel mechanism for hexapod walking-operating multifuctional robot. Each leg of the robot consists of three limbs: universal joint – prismatic joint chain (1-UP) and universal joint – prismatic joint – spherical joint chain (2-UPS) and at the end of the leg there is passive spherical joint to adjust to the uneven ground. In this paper, first the forward kinematic model is built and it shows that the model has close-form solution. Then the work space is discussed in which the robot feet trajectories can be projected. It can be shown that the current trajectories of the feet only take very small work space. After that force analysis is performed and the results show that the payload capability of the mechanism is very high. Experiments of the prototype show that the robot can walk easily with more than 150 kg loads while the step size is more than 0.5 m.

Robot’s virtual model is constructed and a control algorithm is proposed by applying virtual components at some strategic locations. For adjusting the planned control law continuously in response to the current movement of the feet of the robot, a control scheme has been presented to make the four-legged robot control systems robust to parametric and unstructured uncertainties.

Abstract:Legged robots have better performance on discontinuous terrain than that of wheeled robots. However, the dynamic trotting and balance control of a quadruped robot is still a challenging problem, especially when the robot has multi-joint legs. This paper presents a three-dimensional model of a quadruped robot which has 6 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) on torso and 5 DOF on each leg. On the basis of the Spring-Loaded Inverted Pendulum (SLIP) model, body control algorithm is discussed in the first place to figure out how legs work in 3D trotting. Then, motivated by the principle of joint function separation and introducing certain biological characteristics, two joint coordination approaches are developed to produce the trot and provide balance. The robot reaches the highest speed of 2.0 m·s −1 , and keeps balance under 250 Kg·m·s −1 lateral disturbance in the simulations. The effectiveness of these approaches is also verified on a prototype robot which runs to 0.83 m·s −1 on the treadmill. The simulations and experiments show that legged robots have good biological properties, such as the ground reaction force, and spring-like leg behavior.

Abstract:Dynamics simulation is an important technique for hexapod robots. However, the realistic locomotion of a robot is comprehensive due to kinematics error, mechanism deformation, sinkage, slippage, and dragging of the feet on the ground. To investigate this phenomenon, this paper presents a kinematics and dynamics model of a hexapod robot to include this effect in dynamics simulation. The compliance of both the robot and terrain are taken into consideration. The total compliance matrix and compatibility equation are established with the consideration of the compliance of the legs, body, and terrain. The body of the robot is modeled to have a coupled compliance to consider the effect of all six legs. The theory of terramechanics is introduced to describe the constraint between the feet of the robot and terrain. The complete dynamics model of hexapodal walking is built on the foundation of the compliant kinematics model and foot-terrain interaction mechanics model. Numerical simulation and experiments are performed based on a bio-inspired hexapod robot. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the model can provide a reliable accuracy with only analytical and a priori data as inputs.

Abstract:One of the basic characteristics of the walking robots is the maintenance of their dynamic balance during the walk, and the stability of legged robots in locomotion is necessary. In the past few years, the dynamics of legged robots was studied based on very simple or simplified leg structures. A more complete dynamic model is essential for the further research of a practical legged robot. As an important enrichment in stability study for a walking robot, a stability measure named as moment ratio stability margin is introduced, which takes all stability factors into formulation. The mechanical structure of a novel parallel–serial legged mechanism is introduced. Based on this structure, the performance of the proposed method is demonstrated. The advantages and practical significance of the proposed technique are illustrated by comparing it with conventional methods. The experimental study is carried out to evaluate and characterize the performances of this method.
