Abstract:The reaction of potassium molybdate and racemic mandelic acid in a wide range of pH values (pH 3.0-7.5) was investigated for the effect of metal-to-ligand molar ratio variations on the prod- uct patterns. The reaction of potassium molybdate with R,S-mandelic acid in 1:2 mol ratio gave the meso mandelato molybdate K4(MoO2(R-mand)2)(MoO2(S-mand)2)·9H2O (1), while potas- sium molybdate with excess R,S-mandelic acid (1:5 molar ratio) resulted in the sampling either K2(MoO2(R-mand)2)·2(S-H2mand)·H2O (2) or K2(MoO2(S-mand)2)2(R-H2mand)H2 O( 3) (H2mand = mandelic acid) as individual crystals; the isolated bulk of the product was the enantiomeric mixture (i.e., a racemic compound). Thus we encountered aprima faciePasteurphe- nomenon. In both cases, R and S-mandelic acids reacted regiospecifically. Under the latter condi- tions 1 reacted with a large excess of mandelic acids by cross-metathesis to form enantiomers 2+3. The two complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR and NMR spectroscopies. In the two complexes, the molybdenum atoms are hexa-coordinated by twocis-oxo groups and two bidentate mandelate ligands through the deprotonated -alkoxyl and -carboxyl groups.
