Abstract:Within the realms of the possibility of solid quark matter, we fitted the 500ks Chandra LETG/HRC data for RX J1856.5-3754 with a phenomenological spectral model, and found that electric conductivity of quark matter on the stellar surface is about > 1.2 x 10^18 s^-1.

Abstract:Using the Thomas-Fermi model, we investigated the electric characteristics of a static non-magnetized strange star without crust. The exact solutions of electron number density and electric field above the quark surface are obtained. These results are useful if we are concerned about physical processes near the quark matter surfaces of strange stars.

Abstract:The structures of strange quark stars are studied within a quasiparticle model obtained by the two-loop approximation. A softer equation of state yields a smaller maximum mass, a smaller radius, and makes the surface energy density and the surface quark chemical potential larger. The parameter space is obtained under the following constraints: the maximum mass of the strange quark star should be larger than 2.0 solar masses, which matches the masses of PSR J0348 + 0432 and PSR J1614-2230, and the surface energy density should be larger than 2.80 x 10(14) g/cm(3). In our parameter space, the surface quark chemical potential is smaller than 308 MeV which is the critical quark chemical potential in QCD without electromagnetism. Also, the tidal Love number k(2) and deformability. are calculated for a 1.4-solar-mass strange quark star. A softer equation of state yields a smaller Lambda(1.4) and leads to a strange quark star that is more compact and less likely to be tidally deformed. The data of GW170817 indicate that the upper bound of Lambda(1.4) is 800 for the low-spin prior, which gives an upper bound of the parameter zeta of the running coupling constant alpha(s) and gives a lower bound of the vacuum pressure density B, i.e., zeta < 0.098 GeV, B > (0.111 GeV)(4). Moreover, the constraint on zeta also plays an important role in phenomenological studies of the quark-gluon plasma.
Quark clusters in quark stars and possible astrophysical implications

Abstract:A quark-cluster state, rather than the color-super-conductivity state, may appear in matter with low-temperature but high density, since the phase transition of chiral symmetry broken and that of color-confinement could not occur imultaneously. Such quark clusters might be stable in strange quark matter. Quark stars would have temperatures to be low enough to freeze by residual color interaction between the clusters, and become then solid ones.The charge numbers and the sizes of quark clusters, as well as the residual interactions in-between are investigated. The solid state properties of quark stars are constrained by observations.

Abstract:By means of the EOS of QCD at zero temperature and finite quark chemical potential we proposed [Phys. Rev. D 78 (2008) 054001] in the framework of rainbow-ladder approximation of Dyson-Schwinger approach, we investigate the structure of quark star and its property. It is found that the mass-radius relation in our model is very different from that of usual quark star models, but similar to neutron star models. The obtained mass of quark star is about 1.75M(circle dot) similar to 2.2M(circle dot). The obtained radius of quark star is 22 similar to 26 km, which is obviously larger than the results in other models. The reason for this discrepancy is analyzed.

Abstract:The matter inside pulsar-like compact stars could be in a quark-cluster phase since in cold dense matter at a few nuclear densities (ρ ~ 2 - 10ρ0), quarks could be coupled still very strongly and condensate in position space to form quark clusters. Quark-cluster stars are chromatically confined and could initially be bare, therefore the surface properties of quark-cluster stars would be quite different from that of conventional neutron stars. Some facts indicate that a bare and self-confined surface of pulsar-like compact stars might be necessary in order to naturally understand different observational manifestations. On one hand, as for explaining the drifting sub-pulse phenomena, the binding energy of particles on pulsar surface should be high enough to produce vacuum gaps, which indicates that pulsar's surface might be strongly self-confined. On the other hand, a bare surface of quark-cluster star can overcome the baryon contamination problem of γ-ray burst as well as promote a successful core-collapse supernova. What is more, the non-atomic thermal spectra of dead pulsars may indicate also a bare surface without atmosphere, and the hydro-cyclotron oscillation of the electron sea above the quark-cluster star surface could be responsible for those absorption features detected. These hints could reflect the property of compact star's surface and possibly the state of condensed matter inside, and then might finally result in identifying quark-cluster stars.

Abstract:The possibility of strange stars is one of the most important issues in the study of compact objects. Here we use the observations of the newly discovered millisecond x-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 to constrain the radius of the compact star. Comparing the mass-radius relation of SAX J1808.4-3658 with theoretical models for both neutron stars and strange stars, we argue that a strange star model could be more consistent with SAX J1808.4-3658, and suggest that it is a likely strange star candidate. Our results are useful in constraining microscopic chiral symmetry restoration parameters in the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) modeling of strange matter.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of the equation of state of strange-quark matter and u-d quark matter, the sound velocity of quark matter, the stability region for star matter, the maximum mass of quark stars (QSs), and the tidal deformability for QSs by using a quark quasiparticle model. Our results indicate that the recently discovered heavy compact stars PSR J0348+ 0432, MSR J0740+6620, and PSR J2215+5135, and especially the GW190814s secondary component m2 can be well described as QSs within the quasiparticle model.

Model Study of a Quark Star

Abstract:In this paper we apply the equation of state (EOS) of QCD at finite chemical potential and zero temperature proposed in H. S. Zong and W. M. Sun [Int. J. Mod. Phys. A 23, 3591 (2008)] to the study of properties of quark star. This EOS contains only one adjustable parameter m(D) which sets the scale of chiral symmetry breaking (in our calculation we have chosen two values of m(D): m(D) = 244 MeV and m(D) 239 MeV, which is fitted from the value of f(pi) and determined by e(+)e(-) annihilation experiment, respectively). From this EOS a model of quark star is established by applying the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation under two conditions: with the P(mu = 0) term and without the P(mu = 0) term. Our results show clearly that the P(mu = 0) term is an important quantity in the study of quark star. A comparison between our model and other models of quark star is made. In particular, we have compared our results with the most recent observational data measured using Shapiro delay reported in P. B. Demorest et al. [Nature (London) 467, 1081 (2010)].

A Solution to the Puzzling Symbiotic X-ray System 4U 1700+24

Abstract:A circumstellar corona is proposed to explain a strange quark-cluster star during an accretion phase, which could be essential for understanding the observations of the puzzling symbiotic X-ray system 4U 1700+24. The state of cold matter at supranuclear density is still an important matter of debate, and one of the consequences of a strange star acting as a pulsar is the self-bound phenomenon on the surface, which makes extremely low-mass compact objects unavoidable. In principle, both the redshifted O VIII Ly-α emission line and the change in the blackbody radiation area could naturally be understood if 4U 1700+24 is a low-mass quark-cluster star which exhibits wind accretion.
Quark Stars as Hideouts For Color-spin-locked Quark Matter: Implications for Powering High-energy Electromagnetic Emissions

Abstract:The ground state of moderately dense cold quark matter is investigated within the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. It is found that in the regime of weak and intermediate diquark coupling strength, the color-spin-locked (CSL) phase could be most favored, and the density range where CSL phase survives is determined by two quark chemical potentials: one corresponding to the chiral phase transition and the other for the emergence of the gapless color-flavor-locked (CFL) condensate. Based on the theoretical hypothesis that the quark star could be the hideout for CSL quark matter, an interesting scenario is proposed that the phase transition to the CSL phase could occur in the cooling process of a proper quark star. The CSL quark matter is an electromagnetic superconductor of Type-I, and a complete Meissner effect is expected. However, the analysis for this sizable superconductor indicates that most of the magnetic field is frozen inside the star with a critical strength, while in some special cases, a small fraction could be expelled from a thin layer near the surface in a short time. An analysis on energetics and time scale is performed to investigate if this expulsion of magnetic flux could power or induce high-energy electromagnetic emissions.

Abstract:If quark stars exist, they may be enveloped in thin electron layers (electron seas), which uniformly surround the entire star. These layers will be affected by the magnetic fields of quark stars in such a way that the electron seas would transmit hydromagnetic cyclotron waves, as studied in this paper. Particular attention is devoted to vortex hydrodynamical oscillations of the electron sea. The frequency spectrum of these oscillations is derived in analytic form. If the thermal X-ray spectra of quark stars are modulated by vortex hydrodynamical vibrations, the thermal spectra of compact stars, foremost central compact objects (CCOs) and X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs), could be used to verify the existence of these vibrational modes observationally. The central compact object 1E 1207.4-5209 appears particularly interesting in this context, since its absorption features at 0.7 keV and 1.4 keV can be comfortably explained in the framework of the hydro-cyclotron oscillation model.

Abstract:The nature of pulsar-like compact stars is still in controversy although the first pulsar was found more than 40 years ago. Generally speaking, conventional neutron stars and non-mainstream quark stars are two types of models to describe the inner structure of pulsars, with the former composed mainly of hadrons and the latter of a peculiar kind of matter whose state equation should be understood in the level of quarks rather than hadrons. To construct a more realistic model from both theoretical and observational points of view, we conjecture that pulsars could be "quark-cluster stars" which are composed of quark-clusters with almost equal numbers of up, down and strange quarks. Clustering quark matter could be the result of strong coupling between quarks inside realistic compact stars. The lightest quark clusters could be of H-dibaryons, while quark clusters could also be heavier with more quarks. Being essentially related to the non-perturbative quantum-chromo dynamics (QCD), the state of supra-nuclear condensed matter is really difficult to obtain strictly by only theoretical QCD-calculations, and we expect, nevertheless, that astrophysical observations could help us to have a final solution.

Abstract:Abstract We study the thermodynamic properties of asymmetric quark matter, large mass quark stars (QSs), and proto-quark stars (PQSs) within the quasiparticle model. Considering the effects of temperature within quasiparticle model can significantly influence the EOS and the entropy of strange quark matter (SQM), quark fractions in SQM, as well as the tidal deformability and the maximum mass of PQSs along the star evolution line. Our results indicate that the recent discovered heavy compact stars PSR J0348+0432, MSR J0740+6620, PSR J2215+5135, and especially the GW190814’s secondary component $$m_2$$ m 2 can be well described as QSs within the quasiparticle model. The tidal deformability for the QSs describing the heavy compact stars is extremely large, which can not well describe GW170817 as QSs, and the effects of the temperature in the heating process along the star evolution will further increase the tidal deformability and the maximum mass of PQSs.

Abstract:The equation of state (EOS) of cold and dense strongly interacting matter is crucial for better research of compact stars, i.e., neutron stars and quark stars. We generalize our improved quasi-particle model from finite temperature and zero chemical potential [Phys. Lett. B 711 (2012) 65] to the case of zero temperature and finite chemical potential to obtain an EOS of our improved quasi-particle model and then apply this EOS to study the structure of a quark star. The results are consistent with the most recent astronomical observational data.

Abstract:The structure of a light quark star is studied within a new two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. By retaining the contribution from the vector term in the Fierz-transformed Lagrangian, a two-solar-mass pure quark star is achieved. To overcome the disadvantage of three-momentum truncation in the regularization procedure, we introduce the proper-time regularization. We also employ the newly proposed definition of vacuum pressure [J. Phys. G 45, 105001 (2018)], in which the quasi-Wigner vacuum (corresponding to the quasi-Wigner solution of the gap equation) is used as the reference ground state. The free parameters include only a mixing constant $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ which weighs the contribution from the Fierz-transformed Lagrangian. We constrain $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ to be around 0.9 by the observed mass of pulsars PSR $\mathrm{J}0348+0432$ and PSR $\mathrm{J}1614\text{\ensuremath{-}}2230$. We find that the calculated surface energy density meets the requirement ($>2.80\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{14}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{g}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$) [Phys. Rev. D 99, 043001 (2019)]. Besides, for a 1.4-solar-mass star, the deformability $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ is calculated, which is consistent with a recent analysis on the binary neutron star merger GW170817 with $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ in (0,630) for large component spins and ${300}_{\ensuremath{-}230}^{+420}$ when restricting the magnitude of the component spins [Phys. Rev. X 9, 011001 (2019)], and satisfies the constraints $200<\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}<800$ of early works.
