Investigation on Cognition of Self-handling of Cytotoxic Drugs and Evaluation of Knowledge Training in Oncology Nurses

Abstract:Objective To understand nurses’ cognition of self-handling of cytotoxic drugs and to identify the effect of related training on the knowledge of self-handling of cytotoxic drugs in Hematology and Oncology Department.Methods The training contents were developed according to self-handling cyctotoxic drugs booklet published by the Oncology Nursing Society of America. Examination paper was developed to measure the cognition according to the training contents. Quasi-experimental design was used for 216 nurses in 12 first-class hospitals which were affiliated to 4 medical universities.Standard training courses were provided based on the training contents.All the subjects attended the examination using self-developed examination paper before and after training.Results The score after training was significantly higher than that before training (P0.01). There was significant difference in scores of 12 items tested before and after training, and 8 of them were about the knowledge of pharmacology of cytotoxic drugs and operating skills. Even after the training, error ratio was up to 40% in 7 items which were the questions about hospital hardware, environmental requirement and policy.Conclusion The cognition of nurses on self-handling of cytotoxic drugs is not enough for self-protection in Hematology and Oncology Department. The related training can significantly improve the level of knowledge and has the positive effect on self-handling of cytotoxic drugs.
