Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) with the clinicopathologic features in Asian patients with gastric carcinoma. Methods: The published studies related to the association of VEGF expression with the pathologic features in Asian patients with gastric carcinoma were searched in PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and WanFang databases. The bias and the heterogeneity of the included studies were analyzed, and the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of VEGF expression related to different pathologic features were calculated by STATA 9.0SE software. Results: Totally, 132 studies were enrolled into the final meta analysis. The VEGF expression in the gastric cancer tissues was significantly higher than that in the normal gastric tissues (P = 0.000). The VEGF expression was positively associated with the invasion depth of tumor (OR = 3.32; 95% CI = 2.82-3.91), lymph node metastasis (OR = 3.52; 95% CI = 3.02-4.10), distant metastasis (OR = 2.88; 95% CI =1.94-4.27), vein invasion (OR = 2.19; 95% CI = 1.68-2.85), and TNM staging (OR = 3.98; 95% CI = 3.31-4.78). Conclusion: The results indicate that VEGF protein may be used as a biological marker to predict the invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer and its prognosis. VEGF may be a valuable predictor in the early diagnosis and treatment for gastric carcinoma. DOI:10.3781/j.issn.1000-7431.2012.04.013
