Abstract:Both analog In-phase and Quadrature (IQ) modulator and demodulator may introduce IQ imbalance. If it is left uncompensated, the system performance will be impaired. In this chapter, we first derive the IQ imbalance model without any other impairments. Then, we consider the IQ imbalance model in presence of frequency offset and phase noise. After that, we consider the IQ imbalance model in multiple antenna systems, firstly space-time or space-frequency encoded systems, then spatial multiplexing systems. At the end, we show the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) degradation due to the IQ imbalance.

Abstract:In this paper, joint estimation for channel and Inphase/Quadrature imbalance (IQI) is investigated in the downlink Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. First, exploiting the sparsity of massive MIMO channels and the timescale separation of channels and IQI, we derive a two-timescale sparse maximum a posterior (MAP) formulation for the joint estimation, where the IQI parameter is the long- term variable and the sparse channel is the short- term variable. Then we propose a two-timescale online joint sparse estimation (TOJSE) algorithm to solve the problem, which can converge to the stationary solutions of the original two-timescale non-convex stochastic optimization problem over time. Finally, simulations show that our proposed TOJSE algorithm can achieve significant gain over various baselines.

Abstract:For narrow band systems, the IQ imbalance can be assumed to be frequency independent. In this chapter, we look at the frequency independent IQ imbalance estimation and compensation. We start from simple RX only IQ imbalance estimation and compensation, then discuss joint TX and RX IQ imbalance compensation and estimation. After that we discuss the estimation and compensation of IQ imbalance when there is frequency offset. At last, we look at the IQ imbalance for multiple antenna systems.

Abstract:Frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance and frequency-independent I/Q imbalance are the major impairments in wideband zero-IF receivers, and they both cannot be ignored. In this paper, a blind calibration model is designed for compensating these I/Q imbalances. In order to accurately estimate the imbalance parameters with low cost, a classification rule is proposed according to the frequency-domain statistical characteristics of the received signal. The calibration points in the frequency-domain are divided into two groups. Then, the amplitude imbalance and the frequency-dependent phase imbalance are derived from the group of signal points and, separately, the frequency-independent phase imbalance is calculated from the group of noise points. In the derivation of the frequency-dependent phase imbalance, a general fitting model suitable for all signal points is proposed, which does not require special calculations for either DC point or fs/2 point. Then, a finite impulse response (FIR) real-valued filter is designed to correct the impairments of received signal. The performances of the proposed calibration model are evaluated through both simulations and experiments. The simulation results show the image rejection ratio (IRR) improvement to around 35–45 dBc at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Based on the mismatched data of the ADRV9009 evaluation board, the experimental results exhibit the IRR improvement of both multi-tone and wideband signals to about 30 dBc.

Abstract:The in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance encountered in the zero-IF receiver leads to incomplete image frequency suppression, which severely deteriorates image rejection ratio (IRR) of the receiver system and must be improved using additional analog or digital signal processing. The I/Q linear phase imbalance (LPI) is the key of the I/Q imbalance, which consists of the time delay deviation (TDD) and the local oscillator (LO) phase offset. TDD is negligible in most literature, but it degrades system performance largely for wideband communication systems. This paper proposes a method based on the cross-power spectrum between the I/Q signal to address the estimation problem of LPI. Compared with other conventional methods, the proposed approach calculates LPI parameters simultaneously without any additional hardware. The MATLAB simulation is utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of the presented method. Moreover, the experimental platform of detailed design demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed estimation method, and IRR of the system before and after compensation shows that LPI has been accurately estimated and eliminated with the help of an appropriate compensation structure. Both reveal that the proposed method offers an effective solution to the LPI problem.

Abstract:The in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance results in insufficient mirror frequency attenuation, which must be enhanced using additional analog or digital signal processing. This paper proposes a novel method to solve the estimation of I/Q linear phase imbalance (LPI), which is the main part of the I/Q imbalance. LPI consists of time delay deviation (TDD) and local oscillator (LO) phase offset. Generalized Cross Correlation (GCC) and Cross-power Spectrum Phase (CSP) are commonly used methodologies of TDD calculation. Compared with other conventional methods of applying GCC or CSP alone, the proposed approach combines GCC and CSP to joint estimate LPI without additional hardware, where GCC is utilized to evaluate TDD and CSP is applied to estimate the LO phase offset with the TDD estimation value from GCC. The MATLAB simulation is utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results of the complete suppression of the mirror frequency and the correct constellation show that LPI has been accurately estimated and compensated with the appropriate compensation structure.

Abstract:Power amplifier (PA) nonlinearity and in-phase and quadrature-phase (IQ) imbalance in the transmitter are of critical concern in modern communication systems due to their significant impact on the transmitter performance. In this paper, in order to eliminate their effects without increasing the complexity at the transmitter, we propose an iterative structure for IQ imbalance and PA nonlinearity joint estimation at the receiver side. The strategic design aims to mitigate the influence of one distortion before estimating the other, ultimately improving the accuracy of estimating each distortion. The proposed approach comprises two primary modules: an IQ imbalance estimation module and a PA nonlinearity estimation module. In addition, there are two supporting modules, namely the PA nonlinearity compensation module and the IQ imbalance reconstruction module, positioned before these two primary modules respectively. Furthermore, we have derived the theoretical Cram & eacute;r-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for the joint distortion model of IQ imbalance and PA nonlinearity. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the proposed algorithm's capability in estimating hardware distortions and mitigating them.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the I/Q imbalance effect of wireless communication systems at the transmitter side and the novel transmitter I/Q imbalance parameters estimation and signal pre-compensation schemes are proposed. The I/Q imbalance parameters estimation of the transmitter is based on the statistical properties of the in-phase and quadrature-phase parts of the signals. The pre-compensation scheme feedbacks the estimated imbalance parameters to the pre-compensation block and the pre-compensation block apply the offsets to the In-phase and quadrature-phase parts of the original low intermediate frequency (LIF) signal before they pass through the up-convertor of the transmitter and the outcome modulated radio frequency (RF) signal will be recovered. Both the signals for the estimation and pre-compensation are low intermediate frequency signals so the estimation and pre-compensation schemes can be realized in the digital domain. Computer simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed schemes. It is shown that the proposed schemes are reliable and feasible for practical implementation.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the impact of quadrature imbalance (QI) in the presence of frequency offset in an optical coherent offset quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK) receiver. Arbitrary conjugate misalignment was realized in a 2×4 90° optical hybrid, and the ellipse correction (EC) method of quadrature imbalance was applied in our simulation. In the case of transmission, the EC method can significantly improve the system performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an adaptive compensation algorithm to reduce the strong frequency-dependent in-phase/quadrature phase (IQ) imbalance in wideband direct-conversion receivers without using training data. Firstly, we propose an frequency-dependent IQ imbalance model by inserting a finite impulse response (FIR) filter to the Q-channel to represent the frequency-dependent characteristics. Subsequently, by using the properness condition as well as the equi-absolute variance condition, we derive a blind frequency-dependent IQ imbalance compensation algorithm based on this model. Finally, simulations with 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals are conducted, and the results show that even for strong frequency-dependent IQ imbalance, the proposed algorithm still provides impressive performances in correcting distortion and reducing the symbol error rate (SER) as well as the error vector magnitude (EVM).

Abstract:The performance degradation of digital receivers caused by I/Q gain and phase imbalances is improved by a method to estimate and compensate for I/Q imbalances based on the power and orthogonality relationships between the in-phase and quadrature channels of the time domain data.Both of the estimates and the compensation are carried out in the time domain which allows for a flexible tradeoff between computational complexity,estimation time and compensation performance.Because the estimation of the I/Q imbalance does not need any pilots or training sequence,this technique is applicable to a wide range of single-carrier and/or multi-carrier communication and broadcasting systems.Simulations of a 64QAM-OFDM system show that this technique can achieve the optimal bit error rate(BER) performance under AWGN channel,and can reduce the performance degradation to about 0.1 dB when the BER is 10-3 under frequency-selective fading channel.

Abstract:We report on a simple alternative method for the compensation of quadrature imbalance in optical quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) coherent systems. By introducing a new metric, the phase imbalance can be determined and compensated. The proposed method is theoretically and numerically analyzed. In particular, it is shown that the method exhibits a small bias of estimated phase imbalance value. Thanks to its deterministic property, this bias can be simply compensated by incorporating at the receiver a phase rotator (or phase shift) whose value can be determined based on an analytical analysis. Moreover, the algorithm is also experimentally validated through bit-error-rate and error vector magnitude (EVM) measurements. A good agreement on the performance of the proposed method with that of the Gram–Schmidt orthogonalization procedure is shown in a 20-Gbit/s optical QPSK experiment. The robustness of both methods was verified with up to 30∘$$30^\circ $$ phase imbalance by comparing the signal with and without phase imbalance compensation. A 10% reduction in EVM is achieved with our method for a high phase imbalance of 30∘$$30^\circ $$, while the implementation complexity can be reduced owing to the suppression of the use of square-root operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate channel estimation with pilot reuse for massive MIMO with in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalances (IQI). Firstly, we obtain an augmented real-valued representation for the received signal by processing the real and imaginary parts individually with relative compensation. Then based on the obtained augmented real-valued representation, we perform minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation for the effective channel which comprises the IQI matrix and wireless channel coefficients. Pilots are reused to reduce the pilot overhead. A lower bound of the effective channel estimation MSE is obtained. Motivated by the optimal conditions under which the lower bound can be achieved, we propose a pilot schedule algorithm. Finally, a least square based method to obtain the relative IQI compensation coefficients is provided. Numerical results verify the performance of the proposed effective channel estimation with pilot reuse.

Abstract:In-phase and Quadrature Imbalance (IQI) exists in both analog IQ modulator and demodulator. When carrier frequency is ultra-high and/or bandwidth is ultra-wide, the impact of IQI on system performance is not negligible. While in most of the literatures, the combined effect of channel, TX, and RX IQI is discussed, in this paper, a method that can separate and simultaneously estimate the three is proposed. The complexity of the proposed method is low, and with estimated TX and RX IQI, simple symbol-by-symbol detection can be used to detect data symbols with negligible performance loss. Compared with the calibration methods, where auxiliary circuits are needed to separate the TX and RX IQI belonging to different communication links inside a transceiver, by exploiting the fact that the wireless channel changes much faster than the IQI, the method proposed here can separate not only the TX and RX IQI but also the channel belonging to the same communication link without any auxiliary circuits. Simulations are carried out to verify the performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:Two types of wireless system imperfections, namely, frequency offset and in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance, are addressed in this paper. The I/Q imbalance in radio frequency (RF) direct-conversion not only introduces an unwanted in-band image interference but also degrades the accuracy of carrier estimation. Toward this end, we propose a pilot-based scheme for both frequency offset and I/Q imbalance compensation at the baseband. A low-cost nonlinear least squares (NLS) frequency estimator robust to the I/Q imbalance is developed. Also derived is an I/Q imbalance compensation structure that consists of two stages: a finite impulse response (FIR) filter that compensates the frequency dependent imbalance; and an asymmetric phase compensator that corrects the frequency independent error. The compensation coefficients are optimized by exploiting the phase rotation embedded in the pilot symbols. Both computer simulations and experiment results verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in various I/Q imbalance scenarios.

Abstract:In advanced sensor system designs, one of the common methods involves converting target physical quantities into phase-/frequency-modulated signals (PM/FM signal). Then, the in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q)-based phase demodulation structure is mainly employed to enhance flexibility and efficiency in obtaining the phase information. However, the presence of I/Q imbalance and additive noise in analog I/Q channels greatly degrade the overall system detection performance. Specifically, we investigated the detailed degradation of signal detection, including the introduction of unwanted interference frequency components, elevated noise floor, and distortion of the target signal. To solve this problem, we proposed a novel-controlled-carrier closed-loop structure to realize the phase demodulation. This structure, built upon the zero-error closed-loop structure, further mitigates the imbalance distortion and optimizes the noise performance by modifying the control method. The detailed structure and key issues are provided. Further, the effectiveness and enhanced performance of the proposed structure are verified by simulation and experiments. The experimental results align with the simulations and it shows that the proposed structure can achieve enhanced imbalance-distortion mitigation and noise suppression without the need for complex I/Q estimation and compensation.

Abstract:Frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance has become one of the most important factors affecting wireless communication systems in zero intermediate frequency (zero-IF) receivers, due to the communication bandwidth being wider. In this paper, a robust low-complexity blind estimation calibration scheme for I/Q imbalance is proposed. The imbalance estimation method makes use of the second-order statistics of the received signals, and a closed-form solution with linear complexity is given by reasonable approximation. The simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed scheme, which shows that the method can increase the image reject ratio (IRR) of the signals by more than 45dB, and the scheme is quite robust.

Abstract:We propose a blind transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) in-phase/quadrature (IQ) amplitude and phase imbalances estimation scheme based on a combination of analytical modeling and clustering algorithms. The proposed scheme can isolate and separately estimate Tx and Rx phase and amplitude imbalances, applicable to high-order multi-modulus signals, and hence, is a great physical-layer-monitoring tool for network disaggregation. We first estimate the Rx imbalances by identifying the fact that the received signal distribution in presence of laser frequency offset (FO), phase noise (PN), and Rx imbalance forms concentric ellipses. A convex hull assisted ellipse correction algorithm is used to determine the Rx IQ imbalance parameters that best match the ellipses. Standard laser FO compensation algorithm follows. A k-means clustering assisted blind phase search algorithm is then employed to mitigate the PN in presence of Tx imbalances. Finally, another iterative k-means clustering procedure is used to estimate the Tx IQ imbalances. The proposed scheme is evaluated experimentally for 34 Gbaud QPSK and 16-quadratic-amplitude modulation signals. The accurate estimation for a wide range of Tx and Rx IQ imbalances and good robustness to amplified spontaneous emission noise is demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel computationally simple calibration scheme for in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance through adaptation algorithm in wideband transceiver. IQ imbalances are divided into frequency-independent (FI) and frequency dependent (FD) caused by up/down mixers and baseband low-pass filters (LPFs) respectively. The proposed compensation scheme is based on separately calibrating FI and FD IQ imbalance. First, a novel calibration structure is introduced, and we use least mean square algorithm to calibrate baseband LPFs. Then, all IQ imbalances are transformed into frequency independent, and conventional algorithm is used to calibrate FI IQ imbalance. Compared with existing schemes, the simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can achieve higher image rejection ratio and lower hardware computational complexity.

Abstract:This study addresses the problem of in‐phase and quadratic‐phase (IQ) imbalance in digital transmitter and receiver communication systems. Recently, several adaptive and non‐adaptive solutions to this problem have been proposed. In this study, an adaptive solution to this problem is given. The authors propose a new robust two‐channel adaptive algorithm to compensate the IQ imbalance problem of quadratic receivers. The new algorithm is based on the combination between the backward blind source separation (BBSS) structure and the fast Newton transversal filter (FNTF) technique to form a two‐channel algorithm that cancels the noisy IQ signal adaptively. The combination of the Newton recursion of the FNTF algorithm with the BBSS principle shows the efficiency of the new algorithm to enhance the output signal to interference ratio and allows distortion correction at the output. Simulation results show the efficiency of the new algorithm to compensate the IQ imbalance problem in comparison with the conventional two‐channel normalised least mean square algorithm.
