Abstract:In an isotropic type II superconductor in a moderate magnetic field, the transition to the normal state occurs by vortex lattice melting. In certain anisotropic cases, the vortices acquire elongated cross sections and interactions. Systems of anisotropic, interacting constituents generally exhibit liquid crystalline phases. We examine the possibility of a two step melting in homogeneous type II superconductors with anisotropic superfluid stiffness from a vortex lattice into first a vortex smectic and then a vortex nematic at high temperature and magnetic field. We find that fluctuations of the ordered phase favor an instability to an intermediate smectic-A in the absence of intrinsic pinning.

Abstract:It is known that a classical SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime can provide a holographic dual to a 2+1 dimensional time reversal symmetry breaking superconductor with a pseudogap. We study the properties of this holographic superconductor in the presence of an applied constant external magnetic field, neglecting backreaction on the geometry. The superconductor is immersed into a constant external magnetic field by adding a radially (the extra dimension) dependent magnetic field to the black hole. As for real superconductors, there is a critical magnetic field above which no superconductivity can appear. The continuity of the first derivative of the free energy difference between the superconducting phase and the normal phase at the critical temperature suggests that the superconducting phase transition with applied magnetic field is of second order.

Abstract:We study the gravity duals of striped holographic superconductors in the AdS black hole and AdS soliton backgrounds. We show the dependences of the condensation and the critical temperature/critical chemical potential on the inhomogeneity in these two different spacetimes. By exploring the dynamics of the normal phase through the scalar field perturbation, we argue that the pair susceptibility and the conductivity can be possible phenomenological indications to disclose the property of inhomogeneity.

Abstract:We show that a simple gravitational theory can provide a holographically dual description of a superconductor. There is a critical temperature, below which a charged condensate forms via a second order phase transition and the (DC) conductivity becomes infinite. The frequency dependent conductivity develops a gap determined by the condensate. We find evidence that the condensate consists of pairs of quasiparticles.

Nonlinear Transport in a Two Dimensional Holographic Superconductor

Abstract:The problem of nonlinear transport in a two-dimensional superconductor with an applied oscillating electric field is solved by the holographic method. The complex conductivity can be computed from the dynamics of the current for both the near- and nonequilibrium regimes. The limit of weak electric field corresponds to the near-equilibrium superconducting regime, where the charge response is linear and the conductivity develops a gap determined by the condensate. A larger electric field drives the system into a superconducting nonequilibrium steady state, where the nonlinear conductivity is quadratic with respect to the electric field. Increasing the amplitude of the applied electric field results in a far-from-equilibrium nonsuperconducting steady state with a universal linear conductivity of one. In the lower temperature regime we also find chaotic behavior of the superconducting gap, which results in a nonmonotonic field-dependent nonlinear conductivity.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate a type-II holographic superconductor with a perturbative scalar field over a (3 + 1)-dimensional electric and magnetically charged planar AdS black hole. After consistently decoupling the scalar field sector from the complete Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar system, we delve into the thermodynamical properties of the background relevant for the dual description of the Ginzburg-Landau density of superconducting states. The adoption of a London gauge allowed us to consider the magnetic field as a uniform external field over which the holographic superconductor is subject. This consideration enables a consistent description of the appearance of Abrikosov vortex lattices typical in type-II superconductors. Thus, by matching near horizon and boundary expansions of the scalar field, we obtained an expression for the upper critical magnetic field as a function of temperature in both, the canonical and grand canonical ensemble. These novel results confirm that our perturbative scalar field model consistently reproduces the well-known temperature behavior of the upper critical magnetic field according to the Ginzburg-Landau theory and other Abelian-Higgs holographic developments for type-II superconductors. In addition, a new analysis of the scalar field equation in terms of a Schrödinger potential led us to observe the existence of potential wells distributed along the holographic coordinate. We interpret these regions with a local minimum as those in which bound states can exist, dual to the Cooper pairs density. These results provide evidence for the existence of an IR order parameter near the extremality. In view of this, we performed a closer inspection of the IR effective scalar equation in which the geometry adopts a Schwarzschild AdS$_{2}\times \mathbb{R}^{2}$ structure.

Abstract:A classical SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in (3 + 1)- dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime is believed to be dual to a p-wave superconductor in (2 + 1)- dimensional flat spacetime. In order to calculate the superconducting coherence length xi of the holographic superconductor near the superconducting phase transition point, we make a perturbative study of the gravity theory analytically. The superconducting coherence length xi is found to be proportional to (1 - T/T-c)(-1/2) near the critical temperature T-c. We also obtain the magnetic penetration depth lambda proportional to (T-c - T)(1/2) by adding a small external homogeneous magnetic field. The results agree with the Ginzburg-Landau theory.
A study of layered holographic superconductor

Abstract:We have investigated a holographic model of a multi-layered superconductor in (2+1)-dimensions using the AdS/CFT correspondence. This correspondence allows us to study strongly interacting condensed matter systems through a weakly interacting gravitational theory. Our study focused on the effects of a finite system size on the superconductor's properties. We observed significant variations in the critical temperature and critical magnetic field depending on the number of layers and the spacing between them. Notably, our results capture the transition from a two-dimensional (2D) to a three-dimensional (3D) behavior in the limit of a large number of closely spaced layers. This transition signifies a change in how the superconductivity operates within real material.

Holographic Superconductor/Insulator Transition with logarithmic electromagnetic field in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Abstract:The behaviors of the holographic superconductors/insulator transition are studied by introducing a charged scalar field coupled with a logarithmic electromagnetic field in both the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole and soliton. For the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole, we find that: i) the larger coupling parameter of logarithmic electrodynamic field $b$ makes it easier for the scalar hair to be condensated; ii) the ratio of the gap frequency in conductivity $\omega_g$ to the critical temperature $T_c$ depends on both $b$ and the Gauss-Bonnet constant $\alpha$; and iii) the critical exponents are independent of the $b$ and $\alpha$. For the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS Soliton, we show that the system is the insulator phase when the chemical potential $\mu$ is small, but there is a phase transition and the AdS soliton reaches the superconductor (or superfluid) phase when $\mu$ larger than critical chemical potential. A special property should be noted is that the critical chemical potential is not changed by the coupling parameter $b$ but depends on $\alpha$.

Abstract:We use the Ginzburg-Landau theory near the transition temperature in order to examine the behavior of an inhomogeneous superconductor in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that a transition from type-I to type-II superconductivity occurs. Furthermore we calculate the critical value of the mismatch and estimate the contributions of the fluctuations of the condensate and the higher-order terms in the Ginzburg-Landau framework.

Abstract:Thermodynamics of type II superconductors in electromagnetic field based on the Ginzburg-Landau theory is presented. The Abrikosov flux lattice solution is derived using an expansion in a parameter characterizing the "distance" to the superconductor-normal phase transition line. The expansion allows a systematic improvement of the solution. The phase diagram of the vortex matter in magnetic field is determined in detail. In the presence of significant thermal fluctuations on the mesoscopic scale (for example, in high T-c materials) the vortex crystal melts into a vortex liquid. A quantitative theory of thermal fluctuations using the lowest Landau level approximation is given. It allows one to determine the melting line and discontinuities at melt, as well as important characteristics of the vortex liquid state. In the presence of quenched disorder (pinning) the vortex matter acquires certain "glassy" properties. The irreversibility line and static properties of the vortex glass state are studied using the "replica" method. Most of the analytical methods are introduced and presented in some detail. Various quantitative and qualitative features are compared to experiments in type II superconductors, although the use of a rather universal Ginzburg-Landau theory is not restricted to superconductivity and can be applied with certain adjustments to other physical systems, for example, rotating Bose-Einstein condensate.
Numerical Study of the Transition to Stripe Phases in High-Temperature Superconductors under a Strong Magnetic Field

Abstract:The nature of spin density wave (SDW) and charge density wave (CDW) in the mixed state of high T_c superconductors (HTS) is investigated by using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and an effective model Hamiltonian with competing SDW and d-wave superconductivity interactions. We show that there exists a critical onsite Coulomb interaction U_c. For optimally doped sample, a two dimensional SDW and CDW modulations are induced for U < U_c while SDW and CDW orders become antiferromagnetic (AF) and charge stripes for U > U_c. These stripe orders are stabilized and enhanced near the vortex cores. The wavelengths of the AF stripes and charge stripes are found respectively to be 8 a and 4 a with a as the lattice constant. We show that our results could be applied to understand several recent experiments on HTS.
Magnetic field -induced phase transition in a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor at low temperatures

Abstract:We consider, within BCS weak coupling theory, the instability of a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor to a state of mixed symmetry $d+iq$, $q=d_{xy},s$. In zero magnetic field we show that there is a large and physically reasonable range of interaction strengths for which a pure $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state is stable down to T=0. In this case a magnetic field, assumed to couple to quasiparticles via their Doppler shifts in the vortex superflow field, is shown to induce a phase transition at $T=T_c^*\sim \sqrt{H}$. Below $T_c^*$, the density of states remains gapless but its field dependence is substantially supressed. The theory explains many features of recent striking thermal conductivity measurements on BSCCO by Krishana et al.

On the Behavior of Superconductors of High Critical Temperatures Outside Schwarzchild Black Holes in AdS Space

Abstract:The physical analysis of condensed matter systems can be difficult due to strong coupling, but the mathematical context of the AdS/CFT correspondence enables non-perturbative descriptions in terms of dual weakly coupled systems. This brief review explores the holographic condensed matter applications of AdS/CFT, particularly through the lens of a high-$T_c$ superconductor outside a Schwarzchild black hole in Anti-de Sitter space. A simple two-dimensional electron condensate Lagrangian is examined first, as employed by G. T. Horowitz, later used to calculate a frequency-dependent conductivity and a free energy analysis; the asymptotics of both in this procedure, as examined by P. Säterskog, are also reviewed. An extended Lagrangian with a higher order Maxwell term is assessed thereafter, with a conductivity peak obtained at low frequencies described well by the Drude model in certain limits. The behavior of Drude model parameters in these limits is also investigated.

Effects of rotation and anisotropy on the properties of type-II holographic superconductors

Abstract:The present work concerns the detailed construction of a holographic model for a type-II s-wave superconductor defined on a 5-dimensional anisotropic rotating black hole. We examine the role of rotation and anisotropy on the properties of the superconductor model focusing on the condensate and the AC conductivity, for which we obtain closed formulas, using both analytical and numerical methods. The results reveal that the rotation is responsible for the appearance of a peak and for introducing an exponentially vanishing behavior in the high-frequency limit of the real component of the AC conductivity. Such a behavior aligns with that observed in high-temperature superconductor models and experiments, where the peak and vanishing behavior result from quasiparticle damping, suggesting a plausible relation between the rotation of a black hole and quasiparticle damping effects in a superconducting material. In addition, we provide a detailed construction of the vortex lattice presented in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.05988" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.05988">arXiv:2208.05988</a> and study its behavior as a function of an external uniform magnetic field. Once again, it is shown that the vortex lattice can be continuously deformed along with a change in the vortex population by virtue of the magnetic field, providing a promising avenue for holographically modeling the vortex lattice deformations observed in experimental superconducting materials. As an observed experimental effect, we describe both the vortex lattice deformation and the vortex population increment under the action of an external magnetic field in the LiFeAs type-II superconductor. These effects supplement those previously found for the FeSe type-II superconductor studied in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.05988" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.05988">arXiv:2208.05988</a>.

Abstract:We study dynamical condensation process in a holographic superconductor model with anisotropy. The time-dependent numerical solution is constructed for the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with complex scalar in asymptotic AdS spacetime. The introduction of dilaton field generates the anisotropy in boundary spatial directions. In analogy of isotropic case, we have two black hole solutions below certain critical temperature $T_c$, the anisotropic charged black hole with and without scalar hair, corresponding respectively to the supercooled normal phase and superconducting phase in the boundary theory. We observe a nonlinear evolution from a supercooled anisotropic black hole without scalar hair to a anisotropic hairy black hole. Via AdS/CFT correspondence, we extract time evolution of the condensate operator, which shows an exponential growth and subsequent saturation, similar to the isotropic case. Furthermore, we obtain a nontrivial time evolution of the boundary pressure, while in isotropic case it remains a constant. We also generalize quasinormal modes calculation to anisotropic black holes and shows scalar quasinormal modes match with relaxation time scale of the condensate operator. In addition, we present the final temperature and anisotropic pressure as functions of initial temperature and background anisotropy.

Abstract:We employ the Einstein-Abelian-Higgs theory to investigate the structure of vortex-antivortex lattices within a superconductor driven by spatial periodic magnetic fields. By adjusting the parameters of the external magnetic field, including the period ($\mathcal{T}$) and the amplitude ($B_0$), various distinct vortex states emerge. These states encompass the Wigner crystallization state, the vortex cluster state, and the suppressed state. Additionally, we present a comprehensive phase diagram to demarcate the specific regions where these structures emerge, contributing to our understanding of superconductivity in complex magnetic environments.

Abstract:We study ultra-cold neutral fermion superfluids in the presence of fictitious magnetic fields, as well as charged fermion superfluids in the presence of real magnetic fields. Charged fermion superfluids undergo a phase transition from type-I to type-II superfluidity, where the magnetic properties of the superfluid change from being a perfect diamagnet without vortices to a partial diamagnet with the emergence of the Abrikosov vortex lattice. The transition from type-I to type-II superfluidity is tunned by changing the scattering parameter (interaction) for fixed density. We also find that neutral fermion superfluids such as $^6$Li and $^{40}$K are extreme type-II superfluids, and that they are more robust to the penetration of a fictitious magnetic field in the BCS-BEC crossover region near unitarity, where the critical fictitious magnetic field reaches a maximum as a function of the scattering parameter (interaction).
Holographic $s$-wave superconductors with conformal anomaly correction

Abstract:We build a holographic $s$-wave conductor/superconductor model and an insulator/superconductor model in the four-dimensional conformal anomaly corrected~(CAC) AdS gravity. The effects of CAC parameter $\alpha$ are studied using both numerical and analytical methods in the probe approximation. Concretely, when the CAC parameter increases, the critical temperature increases for the conductor/superconductor phase transition, while the critical chemical potential decreases for the insulator/superconductor case, which suggests that the increasing CAC parameter enhances both superconducting phase transitions. Meanwhile, below the critical temperature or beyond the critical chemical potential, the scalar hair begins to condense, and the condensed phases are found to be thermodynamically stable. The critical behaviors obtained from numerics are confirmed by our analytical analysis. For the parameters we are considering, the energy gap in the conductor/superconductor model decreases monotonically by increasing the CAC parameter, while for the insulator/superconductor model the energy of quasiparticle excitations decreases with the CAC parameter.
