Abstract:This article examines the international competition territory of manufacturing from the view of competitive priority. Competitive priority is the selection of the competing mode and market position of the manufacturing enterprises. All decisions and manufacturing practices of an organization should be developed around competitive priorities. The configurations of competitive priorities forms different strategy type and resource allocation sequence to fulfill the manufacturing aims. So the international competition territory of manufacturing will be shaped by the taxonomy of competitive priority. Based on the literature review, the research proposition is proposed as follows: because of the difference of the external market environment, different manufacturing companies of different regions will form diversified configurations of competitive priorities combination. Using empirical data from International Manufacturing Strategy Survey 2009(IMSS V), the paper researched competitive priority characters of manufacturing enterprises and the differences of them among different regions. The samples include 381 manufac-turing companies from 12 countries which give us a good chance to study the world manufacturing industry panoramically. The popular and preferred two-step clustering procedure is applied, whereby a hierarchical cluster determines the number of clusters, and the subsequent non-hierarchical cluster identifies the strategic groups. Then the cluster results are analyzed by discriminant analysis to reveal the characteristics of different competitive priority group. The scatter plot is depicted based on the results of discriminant analysis and name four groups of competitive priority as All-rounders, Volunteers, Innovators and Caretakers. In depth analysis on the competitive priority taxonomy in a world territory context shows that Asia, Brazil and Mexico manufacturing companies mainly compete as All-rounders; manufacturing companies of America, Canada, and west, central and east Europe mostly compete as Volunteers, while manufacturing companies from north and south Europe likely to compete as Innovators. Based on the studies above, this paper shows an international competition territory of manufacturing, and designed a route model of international competitive decision. The reasons to arise the territory differences of competitive priority are discussed from the aspects of economy, culture, consumer, regulation and policy. Finally, this paper analyzes the decision mode about the competitive priority in the process of interna-tionalization and offers some advices to support the international competition of manufacturing companies.
