Abstract:The Margolus-Levitin Theorem is a limitation on the minimal evolving time of a quantum system from its initial state to its orthogonal state. It also supplies a bound on the maximal operations or events can occur within a volume of spacetime. We compare Margolus-Levitin Theorem with other form of limitation on minimal evolving time, and present covariant versions of Margolus-Levitin Theorem in special and general relativity respectively. The relation among entropy bound, maximum information flow and computational limit are discussed, by applying the covariant versions of Margolus-Levitin Theorem.

Abstract:We derive a sharp bound as the quantum speed limit (QSL) for the minimal evolution time of quantum open systems in the non-Markovian strong-coupling regime with initial mixed states by considering the effects of both renormalized Hamiltonian and dissipator. For a non-Markovian quantum open system, the possible evolution time between two arbitrary states is not unique, among the set of which we find that the minimal one and its QSL can decrease more steeply by adjusting the coupling strength of the dissipator, which thus provides potential improvements of efficiency in many quantum physics and quantum information areas.

Abstract:The laws of quantum physics place a limit on the speed of computation. In particular, the evolution time of a system from an initial state to a final state cannot be arbitrarily short. Bounds on the speed of evolution for unitary dynamics have long been studied. A few bounds on the speed of evolution for noisy dynamics have also been obtained recently, which, however, are in general not tight. In this paper, we present a new framework for quantum speed limit concerning noisy dynamics. Within this framework we obtain the exact maximal rotation angle that noisy dynamics can achieve at any given time, which gives rise to a tight bound on the evolution time for noisy dynamics. The obtained bound clearly reveals that noisy dynamics are essentially different from unitary dynamics. Furthermore, we show that the orthogonalization time, which is the minimum time needed to evolve any state to its orthogonal state, is in general not applicable to noisy dynamics.

Abstract:The optimal control problem of the closed quantum systems can be equivalent to the parameters optimization problem of bilinear control systems. Numerical optimization techniques such as time scaling transformation are introduced to the Gradient Ascent Pulse Engineering (GRAPE) algorithm. The modified scheme can improse the fidelity, reduce the optimal evolutionary time and errors caused by the nonlinear hardware as illustrated in the numerical simulation of homonuclear optimal control.

Abstract:We study the optimal quantum control of heteronuclear two-qubit systems described by a Hamiltonian containing both nonlocal internal drift and local control terms. We derive an explicit formula to compute the minimum time required to steer the system from an initial state to a specified final state. As applications the minimal time to implement Controlled-NOT gate, SWAP gate and Controlled-U gate is calculated in detail. The experimental realizations of these quantum gates are explicitly presented.

Abstract:The existence of a minimum measurable length scale was suggested by various theories of quantum gravity, string theory and black hole physics. Motivated by this we examine a quantum theory exhibiting a minimum measurable time scale. We use the Page-Wootters formalism to describe time evolution of a quantum system with the modified commutation relations between the time and frequency operator. Such modification leads to a minimal uncertainty in the measurement of time. This causes breaking of the time-translation symmetry and results in a modified version of the Schrodinger equation. A minimal time scale allows also to introduce a discrete Schrodinger equation describing time evolution on a lattice. We show that both descriptions of time evolution are equivalent. We demonstrate the developed theory on couple simple quantum systems.

Abstract:We consider the problem of controlling in minimum time a two-level quantum system which can be subject to a drift. The control is assumed to be bounded in magnitude and to affect two or three independent generators of the dynamics. We describe the time optimal trajectories in SU(2), the Lie group of possible evolutions for the system, by means of a particularly simple parametrization of the group. A key ingredient of our analysis is the introduction of the optimal front line. This tool allows us to fully characterize the time evolution of the reachable sets and to derive the worst-case operators and the corresponding times. The analysis is performed in any regime—controlled dynamics stronger than, of the same magnitude as, or weaker than the drift term—and gives a method to synthesize quantum logic operations on a two-level system in minimum time.

Abstract:Finding minimal time and establishing the structure of the corresponding optimal controls which can transfer a given initial state of a quantum system into a given target state is a key problem of quantum control. In this work, this problem is solved for a basic component of various quantum technology processes—a qubit interacting with the environment and experiencing an arbitrary time-dependent coherent driving. We rigorously derive both upper and lower estimates for the minimal steering time. Surprisingly, we discover that the optimal controls have a very special form—they consist of two impulses, at the beginning and at the end of the control period, which can be assisted by a smooth time-dependent control in between. Moreover, an important for practical applications explicit almost optimal state transfer protocol is provided which only consists of four impulses and gives an almost optimal time of motion. The results can be directly applied to a variety of experimental situations for estimation of the ultimate limits of state control for quantum technologies.

A practical approach to determine minimal quantum gate durations using amplitude-bounded quantum controls

Abstract:We present an iterative scheme to estimate the minimal duration in which a quantum gate can be realized while satisfying hardware constraints on the control pulse amplitudes. The scheme performs a sequence of unconstrained numerical optimal control cycles that each minimize the gate fidelity for a given gate duration alongside an additional penalty term for the control pulse amplitudes. After each cycle, the gate duration is adjusted based on the inverse of the resulting maximum control pulse amplitudes, by re-scaling the dynamics to a new duration where control pulses satisfy the amplitude constraints. Those scaled controls then serve as an initial guess for the next unconstrained optimal control cycle, using the adjusted gate duration. We provide multiple numerical examples that each demonstrate fast convergence of the scheme towards a gate duration that is close to the quantum speed limit, given the control pulse amplitude bound. The proposed technique is agnostic to the underlying system and control Hamiltonian models, as well as the target unitary gate operation, making the time-scaling iteration an easy to implement and practically useful scheme for reducing the durations of quantum gate operations.

Abstract:Quantum adiabatic computation is a novel paradigm for the design of quantum algorithms, which is usually used to find the minimum of a classical function. In this paper, we show that if the initial hamiltonian of a quantum adiabatic evolution with a interpolation path is too simple, the minimal gap between the ground state and the first excited state of this quantum adiabatic evolution is an inverse exponential distance. Thus quantum adiabatic evolutions of this kind can't be used to design efficient quantum algorithms. Similarly, we show that a quantum adiabatic evolution with a simple final hamiltonian also has a long running time, which suggests that some functions can't be minimized efficiently by any quantum adiabatic evolution with a interpolation path.

Abstract:This paper presents a design method for minimum-time control of homonuclear spin systems. We firstly estimate the minimum time based on a multiple time-scale analysis, following which an improved gradient algorithm is deigned to search the control profile. Numerical simulations show that this method can effectively reduce the search efforts for finding the minimum-time control for two-spin systems.

Abstract:Time-optimal control holds promise across the full spectrum of quantum technologies, where the rapid generation of unitary gates and state transformations is crucial to mitigate decoherence effects. In practical scenarios, quantum systems are always immersed in an external time-dependent field or potential, either owing to the inevitable influence of the environment or as a sought-after effect for enhanced coherence. The challenge then lies in finding the time-optimal approach to navigate quantum systems amidst dynamical ambient Hamiltonians, a pursuit that has proven elusive thus far. We showcase the implementation of arbitrary quantum state transformations and a universal set of single-qubit gates under a background Landau-Zener Hamiltonian. Leveraging the favorable coherence properties of timedomain Rabi oscillations, we achieve velocities surpassing the Mandelstam-Tamm quantum speed limit and significantly lower energy costs than those incurred by conventional quantum control techniques. These findings highlight a promising pathway to expedite and economize high-fidelity quantum operations.

Abstract:In this paper we estimate the minimal controllability time for a class of non-linear control systems with a bounded convex state constraint. An explicit expression is given for the controllability time if the image of the control matrix is of co-dimension one. A lower bound for the controllability time is given in the general case. The technique is based on finding a lower dimension system with the similar controllability properties as the original system. The controls corresponding to the minimal time, or time close to the minimal one, are discussed and computed analytically. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated by a few examples.

Abstract:Quantum speed limit focuses on the minimum time scale for a fixed mission and hence is important in quantum information where fast dynamics is usually beneficial. Most existing tools for the depiction of quantum speed limit are the lower-bound-type tools, which are in fact difficult to reveal the true minimum time, especially for many-body systems or complex dynamics. Therefore, the evaluation of this true minimum time in these scenarios is still an unsolved problem. Hereby we propose a three-step (classification-regression-calibration) methodology based on machine learning to evaluate the true minimum time in complex dynamics. Moreover, the analytical expression of the true minimum time is also provided for the time-dependent Hamiltonians with time-independent eigenstates.

Abstract:Tracking the time evolution of a quantum state allows one to verify the thermalization rate or the propagation speed of correlations in generic quantum systems. Inspired by the energy-time uncertainty principle, bounds have been demonstrated on the maximal speed at which a quantum state can change, resulting in immediate and practical tasks. Based on a programmable superconducting quantum processor, we test the dynamics of various emulated quantum mechanical systems encompassing single- and many-body states. We show that one can test the known quantum speed limits and that modifying a single Hamiltonian parameter allows the observation of the crossover of the different bounds on the dynamics. We also unveil the observation of minimal quantum speed limits in addition to more common maximal ones, i.e., the lowest rate of change of a unitarily evolved quantum state. Our results establish a comprehensive experimental characterization of quantum speed limits and pave the way for their subsequent study in engineered non-unitary conditions.

Abstract:Minimal rotating thermodynamic systems are addressed. Particle m placed into the rotating symmetrical double-well potential (bowl), providing binary logical system is considered. The condition providing the transfer of the particle from one frictionless half-well to another, and, in this way, the possibility to record 1 bit of information is derived. The procedure of recording turns out to be irreversible; it is impossible to return the particle to its initial state under rotation about the same axis. The same rotating double-well system exerted to the thermal noise is considered. A minimal rotating thermal engine built of the rotating chamber, movable partition, and the particle confined within the chamber is treated. Rotation of the system displaces the partition, thus enabling erasing of one bit information. Erasing of 1 bit of information is due to the inertia (centrifugal force) acting on the partition. Isothermal expansion of the "minimal gas" expectedly gives rise to the Landauer bound. Compression of the "gas" with the rotation around the same axis is impossible and demands the additional axis of rotation. The interrelation between the possibility of recording/erasing information and the symmetry of the system is considered.
