Abstract:I summarize an update on our previous study (J. Bagger et al. Phys. Rev. D49, 1246) for a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector via longitudinal vector boson scattering at the 14 TeV Large Hadron Collider. In the update, the decay mode $ZZ\to \ell^+\ell^- \nu \bar \nu$ and a new vector-resonance signal via $q\bar q' \to V \to W^+W^-/ W^\pm Z$ are also included.

Abstract:In this paper we survey the signals and backgrounds for a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry-breaking sector at hadron supercolliders in the TeV region. We study the process $\mathrm{pp}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{WWX}$, and compute the rates for the "gold-plated" channels, where ${W}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{l}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $Z\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{l}^{+}{l}^{\ensuremath{-}}(l=e,\ensuremath{\mu})$, for a wide variety of models. Using a forward jet-tag, a central jet-veto, and a back-to-back lepton cut to suppress the standard model backgrounds, we demonstrate that the SSC and CERN LHC have substantial sensitivity to strong interactions in the electroweak symmetry-breaking sector.

Abstract:We classify the sensitivities of the future high energy hadron and electron colliders, such as the LHC and the future Linear Colliders, to probing all the next-to-leading order (NLO) bosonic operators for studying the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) mechanism. We first develop a power counting rule (a generalization of Weinberg’s counting method for the nonlinear sigma model) for the electroweak theories formulated by the chiral Lagrangian. Then, we formulate the Longitudinal-Goldstone Boson Equivalence Theorem as a physical criterion to discriminate the scattering processes that are not sensitive to the EWSB sector. The complementarity of different scattering processes via different colliders for a complete probe of all these NLO effective operators is demonstrated.

Abstract:It has long been recognized that the scattering of electroweak particles at very high energies is dominated by vector boson fusion, which probes the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking and offers a unique window into the ultraviolet regime of the SM. Previous studies assume SM-like couplings and rely on the effective $W$ approximation (or electroweak parton distribution), whose validity is well-established within the SM but not yet studied in the presence of anomalous Higgs couplings. In this work, we critically examine the electroweak production of two Higgs bosons in the presence of anomalous $VVh$ and $VVhh$ couplings. We compute the corresponding helicity amplitudes and compare the cross section results in the effective $W$ approximation with the full fixed-order calculation. In particular, we identify two distinct classes of anomalous Higgs couplings, whose effects are not captured by vector boson fusion and effective $W$ approximation. Such very high energy electroweak scatterings can be probed at the Muon Shot, a multi-TeV muon collider upon which we base our study, although similar considerations apply to other high energy colliders.

Abstract:W +/- W +/- H production at hadron colliders through vector boson scattering is a so far unconsidered process, which leads to a clean signature of two same-sign charged leptons and two widely separated jets. This process is sensitive to the HHH and WWHH couplings and any deviation of these couplings from their SM predictions serves as direct evidence of new physics beyond the SM. In this paper, we perform a Monte Carlo study of this process for the root s = 14 TeV LHC and a 100 TeV pp-collider, and provide projections of the constraints on the triple-Higgs and WWHH quartic couplings for these environments. In particular, we consider the impact of pileup on the expected sensitivity in this channel. Our analysis demonstrates that although the sensitivity to the HHH coupling is rather low, the WWHH coupling can be constrained in this channel within similar to 100% and similar to 20% at 95% confidence level around the SM prediction at the HL-LHC and a 100 TeV pp-collider, respectively. We have also provided results with simple truncation scheme, in consideration of unitarity safety.

Abstract:An SU(2)×U(1)U(1) effective lagrangian of light spin-zero particles and the Goldstone bosons is constructed. Using this effective lagrangian, we show that a light scalar particle reduces the scattering amplitudes predicted by the low-energy theorems for the longitudinally polarized electroweak gauge bosons. One-loop scattering amplitudes are also calculated.

Abstract:Spontaneous dimensional reduction (SDR) is a striking phenomenon predicted by a number of quantum gravity approaches which all indicate that the spacetime dimensions get reduced at high energies. In this work, we formulate an effective theory of electroweak interactions based upon the standard model, incorporating the spontaneous reduction of space-dimensions at TeV scale. The electroweak gauge symmetry is nonlinearly realized with or without a Higgs boson. We demonstrate that the SDR ensures good high-energy behavior and predicts unitary weak boson scattering. For a light Higgs boson of mass 125GeV, the TeV scale SDR gives a natural solution to the hierarchy problem. Such a light Higgs boson can have induced anomalous gauge couplings from the TeV scale SDR. We find that the corresponding WW scattering cross sections become unitary at TeV scale, but exhibit different behaviors from that of the 4d standard model. These can be discriminated by the WW scattering experiments at the LHC.

Abstract:The quartic Higgs-gauge-boson coupling $g_{hhWW}$ is sensitive to the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism, however, it is challenging to be measured at the large hadron collider. We show that the coupling can be well probed at future lepton colliders through di-Higgs boson production via the vector boson fusion channel. We perform a detailed simulation of $\ell^+\ell^-\to \nu\bar\nu hh\to 4b\,+ \!\!\not{\!\! E}_T$ with parton showering effects at $e^+e^-$, $\mu^+\mu^-$ and $e^-\mu^+$ colliders. We find that the regions of $g_{hhWW}/g_{hhWW}^{\rm SM}<0.86$ and $g_{hhWW}/g_{hhWW}^{\rm SM}>1.32$ can be discovered at the $5\sigma$ confidence level at the 10 TeV $\mu^+ \mu^-$ collider with an integrated luminosity of 3 ab$^{-1}$.

Abstract:We present a new probe of strongly coupled electroweak symmetry breaking at the 14 TeV LHC by measuring a phase shift in the event distribution of the decay azimuthal angles in massive gauge boson scattering. One generically expects a large phase shift in the longitudinal gauge boson scattering amplitude due to the presence of broad resonances. This phase shift is observable as an interference effect between the strongly interacting longitudinal modes and the transverse modes of the gauge bosons. We find that even very broad resonances of masses up to 900 GeV can be probed at 3 sigma significance with a 3000 fb(-1) run of the LHC by using this technique. We also present the estimated reach for a future 50 TeV proton-proton collider.

Abstract:The LHC has been built to understand the dynamics at the origin of the breaking of the electroweak symmetry. Weakly coupled models with a fundamental Higgs boson have focused most of the attention of the experimental searches. We will discuss here how to reinterpret these searches in the context of strongly coupled models where the Higgs boson emerges as a composite particle. In particular, we use LHC data to constrain the compositeness scale. We also briefly review the prospects to observe other bosonic and fermionic resonances of the strong sector.

Abstract:We study the gold-plated purely leptonic signal and background rates at the CERN LHC for the ZZ, ${\mathit{W}}^{+}$${\mathit{W}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, ${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$Z, and ${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ final states associated with strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking. We work at an energy of \ensuremath{\surd}s =14 TeV, and develop a combination of back-to-back leptonic, central-jet-vetoing, and forward-jet-tagging cuts that suppresses the standard-model backgrounds. We find that the LHC with an annual luminosity of 100 ${\mathrm{fb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ will achieve a reasonably good sensitivity to the physics of strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking.

Abstract:Interaction of Higgs scalar (H) with weak gauge bosons (V = W+/-, Z(0)) is the key to understand electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) mechanism. New physics effects in the HVV interactions, as predicted by models of compositeness, supersymmetry and extra dimensions, can be formulated as anomalous couplings via a generic effective Lagrangian. We first show that the existing electroweak precision data already impose nontrivial indirect constraints on the anomalous HVV couplings. Then, we systematically study VV --> VV scatterings in the TeV region, via Gold-plated pure leptonic decay modes of the weak bosons. We demonstrate that, even for a light Higgs boson in the mass range 115 GeV less than or similar to m(H) less than or similar to 300 GeV, this process can directly probe the anomalous HVV interactions at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb(-1), which further supports the "no-lose" theorem for the LHC to uncover the EWSB mechanism. Comparisons with the constraints from measuring the cross section of VH associate production and the Higgs boson decay width are also presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V All rights reserved.

Abstract:Abstract Profiling the Higgs boson requires the study of its non-standard decay modes. In this work we discuss the prospects of the Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) to detect scalar particles with masses ,≳ 10 GeV produced from decays of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson. These scalar particles decay mainly to bottom pairs, and in a vast portion of the allowed parameter space they acquire a macroscopic lifetime, hence giving rise to displaced hadronic vertices. The LHeC provides a very clean environment that allows for easy identification of these final states, in contrast to hadronic colliders where the overwhelming backgrounds and high pile-up render such searches incredibly challenging. We find that the LHeC provides a unique window of opportunity to detect scalar particles with masses between 10 and 30 GeV. In the Higgs Portal scenarios we can test the mixing angle squared, sin2 α, as low as 10 −5–10 −7, with the exact value depending on the vacuum expectation value of the new scalar. Our results are also presented in a model-independent fashion in the lifetime-branching ratio and mass-branching ratio planes. We have found that exotic branching ratios of the Higgs boson at the sub-percent level can be probed, for the scalar decay length in the range 10 −4 m ≲ cτ ≲ 10 −1 m. The expected coverage of the parameter space largely exceeds the published sensitivity of the indirect reach at the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider via the invisible Higgs branching ratio.
Anomalous Gauge Couplings of the Higgs Boson at the LHC II: Study of Additional Backgrounds in Semileptonic Mode of WW Scatterings

Abstract:Searching for the Higgs boson is of first priority in LHC experiments. Once a Higgs candidate is found, we then need to know whether it is the standard model (SM) Higgs boson or a Higgs boson in new physics beyond the SM. So far we do not know what model of new physics will actually reflect the property of the nature. A model-independent way of measuring the anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson will provide a no-lose study, i.e., if we find nonvanishing anomalous couplings (deviation from the SM couplings), we can conclude that it is a new physics effect. In a previous paper \cite{QKLZ09}, we gave a hadron level study of a model-independent test of the anomalous gauge couplings of the Higgs boson at the 14 TeV LHC via the semileptonic mode of weak-boson scatterings $pp\to W^+W^\pm j^f_1 j^f_2\to l^+\nu^{}_lj^{}_1j^{}_2j^f_1j^f_2$, and the conclusion is that, with certain kinematical cuts imposed, the measurement can start for an integrated luminosity of 50 fb$^{-1}$. For higher integrated luminosity, say 100 fb$^{-1}$, the two main anomalous coupling constants $f^{}_{WW}/\Lambda^2$ and $f^{}_W/\Lambda^2$ can be determined separately which may provide a clue for figuring out the underlying theory of new physics.
Jet Substructure Analysis for Distinguishing Left- and Right-Handed Couplings of Heavy Neutrino in $W'$ Decay at the HL-LHC

Abstract:The search for heavy $W'$ bosons in their decay modes to a lepton and a heavy neutrino offers a promising avenue for probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. This work focuses on such a signature with an energetic lepton plus a fat jet, originating from the heavy neutrino and containing a lepton. We have employed the jet substructure techniques to isolate the embedded lepton as a subjet of the fat jet. The Lepton Subjet Fraction ($LSF$) and Lepton Mass Drop ($LMD$) variables constructed from the lepton subjet help in separating the signal region from the background. We further study the polarization properties of the $W'$ coupling to the lepton and heavy neutrino through the decay products of the neutrino. Instead of relying on a specific model, we employ generic couplings and explore the discrimination power. Jet substructure-based angular variables $z_\ell$, $z_\theta$, and $z_k$ are combined to form BDT scores to obtain better separation power between left-chiral ($V-A$) and right-chiral ($V+A$) coupling configurations. By using $CL_s$ type profile likelihood estimator, we could achieve $\sim$ 2$\sigma$ $-$ 3$\sigma$ significance of excluding one coupling configuration in favour of the other.

Signatures of Extra Gauge Bosons in the Littlest Higgs Model Withtparity at Future Colliders

Abstract:We study the collider signatures of a T-odd gauge boson W-H pair production in the littlest Higgs model with T parity (LHT) at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Linear Collider (LC). At the LHC, we search for the W-H boson using its leptonic decay, i.e. pp -> WH+WH- -> A(H)A(H)l(+)nu(l)l'(-)(nu) over bar (l'), gives rise to a collider signature of l(+)l'(-) + is not an element of(T). We demonstrate that the LHC not only has a great potential of discovering the W-H boson in this channel, but also can probe enormous parameter space of the LHT. Because of four missing particles in the final state, one cannot reconstruct the mass of W-H at the LHC. But such a mass measurement can be easily achieved at the LC in the process of e(+)e(-)-> WH+WH--> A(H)A(H)W(+)W(-)-> A(H)A(H)jjjj.We present an algorithm of measuring the mass and spin of the W-H boson at the LC. Furthermore, we illustrate that the spin correlation between the W boson and its mother particle (W-H) can be used to distinguish the LHT from other new physics models.

Abstract:Vector-boson scattering processes are of great importance for the current run-II and future runs of the Large Hadron Collider. The presence of triple and quartic gauge couplings in the process gives access to the gauge sector of the Standard Model (SM) and possible new-physics contributions there. To test any new-physics hypothesis, sound knowledge of the SM contributions is necessary, with a precision which at least matches the experimental uncertainties of existing and forthcoming measurements. In this article we present a detailed study of the vector-boson scattering process with two positively-charged leptons and missing transverse momentum in the final state. In particular, we first carry out a systematic comparison of the various approximations that are usually performed for this kind of process against the complete calculation, at LO and NLO QCD accuracy. Such a study is performed both in the usual fiducial region used by experimental collaborations and in a more inclusive phase space, where the differences among the various approximations lead to more sizeable effects. Afterwards, we turn to predictions matched to parton showers, at LO and NLO: we show that on the one hand, the inclusion of NLO QCD corrections leads to more stable predictions, but on the other hand the details of the matching and of the parton-shower programs cause differences which are considerably larger than those observed at fixed order, even in the experimental fiducial region. We conclude with recommendations for experimental studies of vector-boson scattering processes.

The scale of superpartner masses and electroweakino searches at the high-luminosity LHC

Abstract:A bstract Searches for weakly interacting particles is one of the main goals of the high luminosity LHC run. In this work we study the well motivated cases of electroweakinos with mostly Wino and Bino components. We show the relevance of squark induced t-channel production in defining the production cross section and hence the LHC reach. Moreover, a realistic evaluation of the decay branching ratios show a strong dependence on the sign of μ and, for negative values of μ , on the relative size of the ratio of μ to the gaugino masses compared with tan β . Overall, unless it is kinematically suppressed, or specific conditions are fulfilled, the Higgs decay channel is the most significant one, and the trilepton channel becomes subdominant with respect to final states including bottom quarks. Although the properties are different than in the Higgsino-Bino case, also in this case the discovery reach extends to mass values that are significantly larger than the ones probed at current luminosities, leading to a strong motivation for the search for electroweakinos in the high luminosity LHC run.

Abstract:Triple gauge boson production at the LHC can be used to test the robustness of the Standard Model and provide useful information for VBF di-boson scattering measurement. Especially, any derivations from SM prediction will indicate possible new physics. In this paper we present a detailed Monte Carlo study on measuring W ± W ± W ∓ production in pure leptonic and semileptonic decays, and probing anomalous quartic gauge WWWW couplings at the CERN LHC and future hadron collider, with parton shower and detector simulation effects taken into account. Apart from cut-based method, multivariate boosted decision tree method has been exploited for possible improvement. For the leptonic decay channel, our results show that at the √(s)=8(14)[100] TeV pp collider with integrated luminosity of 20(100)[3000] fb −1 , one can reach a significance of 0.4(1.2)[10] σ to observe the SM W ± W ± W ∓ production. For the semileptonic decay channel, one can have 0.5(2)[14] σ to observe the SM W ± W ± W ∓ production. We also give constraints on relevant Dim-8 anomalous WWWW coupling parameters.
