Abstract:In petrochemical industrials,there are plenty of reactors and vessels fill with particle materials.Level gauging of these reactors and vessels is important for manufacture process control and optimize.A model of level gauging was proposed to explore the relationship between particles' level in storage bin,the physical properties of particles and the ultrasonic transportation mediums based upon ultrasonic radiation damping.The experimental result fitted the proposed model in fairly good accuracy.So,this level gauging model based upon radiation damping could be developed to predict the level and this novel ultrasonic method to measure level could be an accurate online measure method of particle material and replace other level gauging methods.
Application of Cosmic-Ray Fast Neutron Method in Soil Moisture Measurement of Typical Farmland in North China Plain.

Abstract:Cosmic-ray neutron sensing (CRNS) is a new method for measuring mean soil moisture at regional scale. On the basis of continuous observation data of CRNS and the measurements of soil moisture with the distributed sensor network in Yucheng Comprehensive Experimental Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, we examined the applicability of the CRNS method to the agroecosystem in North China Plain. The stability of the neutron number in dry conditions (N0) and the effects of rainfall and irrigation on soil moisture estimation were investigated. The results showed that N0 was significantly affected by the underlying surface. The changes of N0 corresponded well to the planting and harvesting time of winter wheat and summer maize. Soil moisture estimated by the CRNS method had obvious response to rainfall and irrigation. When irrigation or rainfall occurred, soil moisture was overestimated. The CRNS method could effectively estimate regional soil moisture for the agroecosystem in North China Plain. The estimates of soil moisture were closest to the soil moisture in 10 cm depth.

Abstract:The first neutron texture diffractometer in China has been built at China Advanced Research Reactor due to the strong demands of texture measurement with neutrons from domestic user community. This neutron texture diffractometer has high neutron intensity, moderate resolution and is mainly applied to study the texture in the commonly used industrial materials and engineering components. In this paper, the design and characteristics of this instrument are described. The results for calibration with neutrons and quantitative texture analysis of Zr alloy plate are presented. The comparison of texture measurement among different neutron texture diffractometer of HIPPO at LANSCE, Kowari at ANSTO and neutron texture diffractometer at CARR illustrates the reliable performance of this texture diffractometer.

Abstract:China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), one project of the 12th Five-Year-Plan scheme of China, is under construction in Guangdong province. Three neutron spectrometers will be installed during the first phase of the project, and two-dimensional position sensitive thermal neutron detectors are required. Before the construction of the neutron detectors, a prototype of a two-dimensional 200 mm×200 mm Multi-wire Proportional Chamber (MWPC) with Ar/CO2 (90/10) flowing gas has been constructed. In 2009, the prototype was tested with the 55Fe X-ray using part of the electronics, and performed well. Following the test in 2009, the neutron detector was constructed with the complete electronics and filled with the 6 atm. 3He+2.5 atm. C3H8 gas mixture in 2010. The neutron detector has been primarily tested with an Am-Be source. In this paper, new developments of the neutron detector including the design of the high pressure chamber, the optimization of the gas purifying system and the gas filling process will be reported. The results and discussion are also presented in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper, dynamic variations of soil moisture for climate observation field and cropland using neutron probes were compared. The results showed that the differences of both were obvious. The regression equations of neutron probes(IAG-Ⅱ)in three climate observation fields of Shenzhou, Huanghua and Bazhou of Hebei province were built. By comparison with the data measured using soil drill, for the soil below 30cm, one regression equation of neutron probe was adopted in Shenzhou and two regression equations in Huanghua. The regression equation of neutron probe (503DR) in examination plots of soil moisture in Gucheng was built. By comparison with the data measured using soil drill, the regression equation could be adopted for the soil below 30cm. For the soil between 0-30cm, measuring soil moisture using soil drill was proposed.

Abstract:The first neutron texture diffractometer in China was built at the China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR). This neutron texture diffractometer has a high neutron intensity, moderate resolution and a neutron wavelength of 1.48 angstrom, which is suitable for studying the bulk textures in commonly used metals or alloys. The neutron texture diffractometer is now equipped with a two-dimensional position-sensitive detector, high temperature furnace and loading device after several upgrades. Now in-situ texture measurements can be performed on the texture diffractometer. A detailed description of the instrument and its performance characteristics are presented in this paper.

Abstract:The neutron background spectrum from thermal neutron to 20 MeV fast neutron was measured at the first experimental hall of China Jinping underground laboratory with a Bonner multi-sphere spectrometer. The measurement system was validated by a Cf252 source and inconformity was corrected. Due to micro charge discharge, the dataset was screened and background from the steel of the detectors was estimated by MC simulation. Based on genetic algorithm we obtained the energy distribution of the neutron and the total flux of neutron was (2.69 +/-1.02) *10^-5 cm^-2s^-1
Development of a light-weight portable neutron survey meter

Abstract:A light-weight portable neutron survey meter was developed using a mixed organic gas counter for dose management at nuclear power plants and accelerator facilities. This survey meter, NSN31041, is ~2 kg in weight and W160×H250×L300 mm(3) in size, which is capable of measuring neutron ambient dose equivalent rate from thermal to 15 MeV neutrons. The neutron energy response of the survey meter is evaluated using continuous energy neutron sources of (252)Cf, (241)Am-Be, thermal neutrons generated from a graphite pile loading a (252)Cf source, concrete-moderated neutrons of (241)Am-Be source and D(2)O-moderated neutrons of (252)Cf source. The measured response data show very good agreement with neutron ambient dose equivalent within a 50 % deviation.

Abstract:This paper introduces the research contents,hardware design,software design and application in the oil and gas field of a compensated neutron instrument,which can be run in combination with the ECLIPS5700 surface system.With the further exploration and development of oil and gas field,developing a compensated neutron instrument which can work under high temperature and high pressure for more than 8 hours to satisfy logging under complex well conditions such as the ultra deep horizontal wells and high-inclination wells is very significant.The application in fields indicates that the instrument can successfully work under high temperature and high pressure for a long time.It has high reliability,simple hardware structure and is easy to repair.

Abstract:The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory is proposed to determine neutrino mass hierarchy using a 20 ktonne liquid scintillator detector. Strict radio-purity requirements have been put forward for all the components of the detector. According to the MC simulation results, the radon dissolved in the water Cherenkov detector should be below 200 mBq/m<math>3</math>. Radium, the progenitor of radon, should also be taken seriously into account. In order to measure the radium concentration in water, a radium measurement system, which consists of a radium extraction system, a radon emanation chamber and a radon concentration measurement system, has been developed. In this paper, the updated radon concentration in gas measurement system with a one-day-measurement sensitivity of <math>∼</math>5 mBq/m<math>3</math>, the detail of the development of the radium concentration in water measurement system with a sensitivity of <math>∼</math>23 mBq/m<math>3</math> as well as the measurement results of Daya Bay water samples will be presented.

Geoscientific Instrumentation Methods and Data Systems

Abstract:Cosmic-ray neutron sensing (CRNS) has emerged as a reliable method for soil moisture and snow estimation. However, the applicability of this method beyond research has been limited due to, among others, the use of relatively large and expensive sensors. This paper presents the tests conducted on a new scintillator-based sensor especially designed to jointly measure neutron counts, muons and total gamma rays. The neutron signal is first compared against two conventional gas-tube-based CRNS sensors at two locations. The estimated soil moisture is further assessed at four agricultural sites, based on gravimetric soil moisture collected within the sensor footprint. Muon fluxes are compared to the incoming neutron variability measured at a neutron monitoring station and total gammas counts are compared to the signal detected by a gamma ray spectrometer. The results show that the neutron dynamic detected by the new scintillator-based CRNS sensor is well in agreement with conventional CRNS sensors. The derived soil moisture also agreed well with the gravimetric soil moisture measurements. The muons and the total gamma rays simultaneously detected by the sensor show promising features to account for the incoming variability and for discriminating irrigation and precipitation events, respectively. Further experiments and analyses should be conducted, however, to better understand the accuracy and the added value of these additional data for soil moisture estimation. Overall, the new scintillator design shows to be a valid and compact alternative to conventional CRNS sensors for non-invasive soil moisture monitoring and to open the path to a wide range of applications.

The pulse amplituderesolution, sensitivity and directional dependence of the monitor were determined.This monitor has been used for natural background measurement in Beijing area dur-ing passed year. The yearly average dose is given and compared with the results ofKEK and CERN.

Abstract:Mapping the soil moisture is a key activity in water management and sustainable agriculture, especially in regions characterised by fragile agri-food systems and water scarcity. Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensors (CRNS) is a contactless nuclear technology used for estimating soil moisture (SM) content on a 20–30 m scale at the landscape level. Very interestingly, this corresponds to the so-called intermediate scale gap between the local probes, operating on the meter scale, and the satellite-based technologies, working on the kilometre scale and above. In state-of-art CRNS, the cosmic neutrons degraded by the soil are simply counted by a slightly moderated thermal neutron counter. After a calibration procedure, the SM is inferred by combining this count rate with environmental parameters: the atmospheric pressure, temperature and the air humidity. As the SM affects not only the environmental neutron fluence rate but also its energy distribution, this study was organised in such a way to understand if a CRNS with spectrometric capabilities could provide improved information on the SM distribution. To this aim, an environmental neutron spectrometer was designed by extending the Bonner Spheres to a more sensitive system made of moderating cylinders embedding long BF proportional counters, the Moderating Cylinders Spectrometer (MCS). Relying on literature environmental neutron spectra, corresponding to different SM values in a standardised soil, the count rates in the MCS were calculated for different values of SM. To simulate various counting scenarios, these count rates were associated to different levels of "realistic" uncertainties and unfolded by means of the FRUIT code. The resulting neutron spectra are compared to the literature ones, allowing at estimating the resolving power of the spectrometer in terms of SM.

Abstract:The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory(JUNO) is a state-of-the-art liquid scintillator-based neutrino physics experiment under construction in South China. To reduce the background from external radioactivities, a water Cherenkov detector composed of 35 kton ultra-pure water and 2,400 20-inch photomultiplier tubes is developed. Even after specialized treatment, ultra-pure water still contains trace levels of radioactive elements that can contribute to the detector background. Among which 222 Rn is particularly significant. To address this, an online radon removal system based on the JUNO prototype has been developed. By integrating micro-bubble generators to enhance degasser's radon removal efficiency, the radon concentration in water can be reduced to 1 mBq/m 3 level, meeting the stringent requirements of JUNO. Additionally, a highly sensitive online radon concentration measurement system capable of detecting concentrations ∼ 1 mBq/m 3 has been developed to monitor the radon concentration in water. In this paper, the details regarding both systems will be presented.

Development of active environmental and personal neutron dosemeters

Abstract:For neutron dosimetry in the radiation environment surrounding nuclear facilities, two types of environmental neutron dosemeters, the high-sensitivity rem counter and the high-sensitivity multi-moderator, the so-called Bonner ball, have been developed and the former is commercially available from Fuji Electric Co. By using these detectors, the cosmic ray neutrons at sea level have been sequentially measured for about 3 y to investigate the time variation of neutron spectrum and ambient dose equivalent influenced by cosmic and terrestrial effects. Our Bonner ball has also been selected as the neutron detector in the International Space Station and has already been used to measure neutrons in the US experimental module. The real time wide-range personal neutron dosemeter which uses two silicon semiconductor detectors has been developed for personal dosimetry and is commercially available from Fuji Electric Co. This dosemeter has good characteristics, fitted to the fluence-to-dose conversion factor in the energy range from thermal energies to several tens of mega-electron-volts and is now widely used in various nuclear facilities.

Abstract:Different from electron back-scattering diffraction and X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction enables to directly measure the bulk texture because of the high penetrability and the large spot size of neutron beam and easily investigate the preferred orientation distributions of multiphase materials, coarse-grained materials and low symmetric materials including hexagonal metals, ceramics and rocks. In this paper, the texture measurement technical environments of two angle dispersive neutron diffractometers were established and optimized respectively, and their reliabilities were quantitatively examined through evaluating the bulk textures of a warm-pressed magnesium alloy and a multilayered multiphase steel sheet. It is found that the MUSASI-L neutron diffractometer with a single tube detector through selecting the proper collimation angle may achieve the similar texture evaluation reliability to the RESA-2 neutron diffractometer with one-dimensional position-sensitive detector, so that both of them are available to directly measure the bulk textures of various materials. In addition, the estimation of thermal neutron absorption shows that if a measurement error about 58% is acceptable, a cubic sample or a cylinder samples whose diameters is equal to its height may be employed to directly measure its bulk texture through completely bathing it in the well-collimated uniform neutron beam without doing the correction of neutron absorption anisotropy. Abstract:The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20ktons multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. Due to low background requirement of the experiment, a multi-veto system ,which consists of a water Cherenkov detector and a top tracker detector, is required. In order to keep the water quality good and remove the radon in the water, a ultra-pure water system, a radon removal system and radon concentration measurement system have been designed. In this paper, the radon removal equipments and its radon removal limit will be presented.
