Abstract:Distributed knowledge is the sum of the knowledge in a group; what someone who is able to discern between two possible worlds whenever any member of the group can discern between them, would know. Sometimes distributed knowledge is referred to as the potential knowledge of a group, or the joint knowledge they could obtain if they had unlimited means of communication. In epistemic logic, the formula D_G{\phi} is intended to express the fact that group G has distributed knowledge of {\phi}, that there is enough information in the group to infer {\phi}. But this is not the same as reasoning about what happens if the members of the group share their information. In this paper we introduce an operator R_G, such that R_G{\phi} means that {\phi} is true after G have shared all their information with each other - after G's distributed knowledge has been resolved. The R_G operators are called resolution operators. Semantically, we say that an expression R_G{\phi} is true iff {\phi} is true in what van Benthem [11, p. 249] calls (G's) communication core; the model update obtained by removing links to states for members of G that are not linked by all members of G. We study logics with different combinations of resolution operators and operators for common and distributed knowledge. Of particular interest is the relationship between distributed and common knowledge. The main results are sound and complete axiomatizations.

Knowledge Problems in Protocol Analysis: Extending the Notion of Subterm Convergent

Abstract:We introduce a new form of restricted term rewrite system, the graph-embedded term rewrite system. These systems, and thus the name, are inspired by the graph minor relation and are more flexible extensions of the well-known homeomorphic-embedded property of term rewrite systems. As a motivating application area, we consider the symbolic analysis of security protocols, and more precisely the two knowledge problems defined by the deduction problem and the static equivalence problem. In this field restricted term rewrite systems, such as subterm convergent ones, have proven useful since the knowledge problems are decidable for such systems. Many of the same decision procedures still work for examples of systems which are "beyond subterm convergent". However, the applicability of the corresponding decision procedures to these examples must often be proven on an individual basis. This is due to the problem that they don't fit into an existing syntactic definition for which the procedures are known to work. Here we show that many of these systems belong to a particular subclass of graph-embedded convergent systems, called contracting convergent systems. On the one hand, we show that the knowledge problems are decidable for the subclass of contracting convergent systems. On the other hand, we show that the knowledge problems are undecidable for the class of graph-embedded systems. Going further, we compare and contrast these graph embedded systems with several notions and properties already known in the protocol analysis literature. Finally, we provide several combination results, both for the combination of multiple contracting convergent systems, and then for the combination of contracting convergent systems with particular permutative equational theories.

Abstract:Simplicial complexes are a successful model for distributed computing. They have recently been observed to provide an interesting model for epistemic multi-agent logic where the agents' local states are the main building blocks (instead of the global states). A natural generalization is to study epistemic logic on semi-simplicial sets. However, finding the appropriate modal logic for semi-simplicial models has been an open question. We answer this by introducing the logic of synergistic knowledge and establishing its soundness and completeness.

Better Bounded Bisimulation Contractions (Preprint)

Abstract:Bisimulations are standard in modal logic and, more generally, in the theory of state-transition systems. The quotient structure of a Kripke model with respect to the bisimulation relation is called a bisimulation contraction. The bisimulation contraction is a minimal model bisimilar to the original model, and hence, for (image-)finite models, a minimal model modally equivalent to the original. Similar definitions exist for bounded bisimulations ($k$-bisimulations) and bounded bisimulation contractions. Two finite models are $k$-bisimilar if and only if they are modally equivalent up to modal depth $k$. However, the quotient structure with respect to the $k$-bisimulation relation does not guarantee a minimal model preserving modal equivalence to depth $k$. In this paper, we remedy this asymmetry to standard bisimulations and provide a novel definition of bounded contractions called rooted $k$-contractions. We prove that rooted $k$-contractions preserve $k$-bisimilarity and are minimal with this property. Finally, we show that rooted $k$-contractions can be exponentially more succinct than standard $k$-contractions.

Abstract:This research note provides novel results concerning the incremental computation of the stable and ideal argumentation semantics, by extending the division-based method presented in [1] and correcting a flawed claim given there. As a basis for these results, the note synthetically reviews and discusses the topology-related properties of directionality and SCC-recursiveness in abstract argumentation semantics and analyzes their relationships with the division-based method.

Abstract:In this article, we consider iteration principles for contraction, with the goal of identifying properties for contractions that respect conditional beliefs. Therefore, we investigate and evaluate four groups of iteration principles for contraction which consider the dynamics of conditional beliefs. For all these principles, we provide semantic characterization theorems and provide formulations by postulates which highlight how the change of beliefs and of conditional beliefs is constrained, whenever that is possible. The first group is similar to the syntactic Darwiche-Pearl postulates. As a second group, we consider semantic postulates for iteration of contraction by Chopra, Ghose, Meyer and Wong, and by Konieczny and Pino Pérez, respectively, and we provide novel syntactic counterparts. Third, we propose a contraction analogue of the independence condition by Jin and Thielscher. For the fourth group, we consider natural and moderate contraction by Nayak. Methodically, we make use of conditionals for contractions, so-called contractionals and furthermore, we propose and employ the novel notion of $ \alpha $-equivalence for formulating some of the new postulates.

Stit Semantics for Epistemic Notions Based on Information Disclosure in Interactive Settings

Abstract:We characterize four types of agentive knowledge using a stit semantics over branching discrete-time structures. These are \emph{ex ante} knowledge, \emph{ex interim} knowledge, \emph{ex post} knowledge, and know-how. The first three are notions that arose from game-theoretical analyses on the stages of information disclosure across the decision making process, and the fourth has gained prominence both in logics of action and in deontic logic as a means to formalize ability. In recent years, logicians in AI have argued that any comprehensive study of responsibility attribution and blameworthiness should include proper treatment of these kinds of knowledge. This paper intends to clarify previous attempts to formalize them in stit logic and to propose alternative interpretations that in our opinion are more akin to the study of responsibility in the stit tradition. The logic we present uses an extension with knowledge operators of the Xstit language, and formulas are evaluated with respect to branching discrete-time models. We also present an axiomatic system for this logic, and address its soundness and completeness.

Abstract:Understanding the behavior of belief change operators for fragments of classical logic has received increasing interest over the last years. Results in this direction are mainly concerned with adapting representation theorems. However, fragment-driven belief change also leads to novel research questions. In this paper we propose the concept of belief distribution, which can be understood as the reverse task of merging. More specifically, we are interested in the following question: given an arbitrary knowledge base $K$ and some merging operator $\Delta$, can we find a profile $E$ and a constraint $\mu$, both from a given fragment of classical logic, such that $\Delta_\mu(E)$ yields a result equivalent to $K$? In other words, we are interested in seeing if $K$ can be distributed into knowledge bases of simpler structure, such that the task of merging allows for a reconstruction of the original knowledge. Our initial results show that merging based on drastic distance allows for an easy distribution of knowledge, while the power of distribution for operators based on Hamming distance relies heavily on the fragment of choice.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an alternative semantics to the non-normal logic of knowing how proposed by Fervari et al. (Proc IJCAI 2017:1031–1038, 2017), based on a class of Kripke neighborhood models with both the epistemic relations and neighborhood structures. This alternative semantics is inspired by the same quantifier alternation pattern of $$\exists \forall $$ in the semantics of the know-how modality and the (monotonic) neighborhood semantics for the standard modality. We show that this new semantics is equivalent to the original Kripke semantics in terms of the validities. A key result is a representation theorem showing that the more abstract Kripke neighborhood models can be represented by the concrete Kripke models with action transitions modulo the valid formulas. We prove the completeness of the logic for the neighborhood semantics. The neighborhood semantics can be adapted to other variants of logics of knowing how. It provides us a powerful technical tool to study these logics while preserving the basic semantic intuition.

Abstract:A dynamical system is called contractive if any two solutions approach one another at an exponential rate. More precisely, the dynamics contracts lines at an exponential rate. This property implies highly ordered asymptotic behavior including entrainment to time-varying periodic vector fields and, in particular, global asymptotic stability for time-invariant vector fields. Contraction theory has found numerous applications in systems and control theory because there exist easy to verify sufficient conditions, based on matrix measures, guaranteeing contraction. Here, we provide a geometric generalization of contraction theory called k-order contraction. A dynamical system is called k-order contractive if the dynamics contracts k-parallelotopes at an exponential rate. For k=1 this reduces to standard contraction. We describe easy to verify sufficient conditions for k-order contractivity based on matrix measures and the kth additive compound of the Jacobian of the vector field. We also describe applications of the seminal work of Muldowney and Li, that can be interpreted in the framework of 2-order contraction, to systems and control theory.

Abstract:We propose a logic of knowledge for impure simplicial complexes. Impure simplicial complexes represent synchronous distributed systems under uncertainty over which processes are still active (are alive) and which processes have failed or crashed (are dead). Our work generalizes the logic of knowledge for pure simplicial complexes, where all processes are alive, by Goubault et al. In our semantics, given a designated face in a complex, a formula can only be true or false there if it is defined. The following are undefined: dead processes cannot know or be ignorant of any proposition, and live processes cannot know or be ignorant of factual propositions involving processes they know to be dead. The semantics are therefore three-valued, with undefined as the third value. We propose an axiomatization that is a version of the modal logic S5. We also show that impure simplicial complexes correspond to certain Kripke models where agents' accessibility relations are equivalence relations on a subset of the domain only. Toward the van Benthem Characterization Theorem for Non-Distributive Modal Logic

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the simulations and bisimulations on polarity-based semantics for non-distributive modal logic, which are natural generalizations of those notions on Kripke semantics for modal logic. We also generalize other important model-theoretic notions about Kripke semantics such as image-finite models, modally-saturated models, ultrafilter extension and ultrapower extension to the non-distributive setting. By using these generalizations, we prove the Hennessy-Milner theorem and the van Benthem characterization theorem for non-distributive modal logic based on polarity-based semantics.

Simplicial Models for the Epistemic Logic of Faulty Agents

Abstract:In recent years, several authors have been investigating simplicial models, a model of epistemic logic based on higher-dimensional structures called simplicial complexes. In the original formulation, simplicial models were always assumed to be pure, meaning that all worlds have the same dimension. This is equivalent to the standard S5n semantics of epistemic logic, based on Kripke models. By removing the assumption that models must be pure, we can go beyond the usual Kripke semantics and study epistemic logics where the number of agents participating in a world can vary. This approach has been developed in a number of papers, with applications in fault-tolerant distributed computing where processes may crash during the execution of a system. A difficulty that arises is that subtle design choices in the definition of impure simplicial models can result in different axioms of the resulting logic. In this paper, we classify those design choices systematically, and axiomatize the corresponding logics. We illustrate them via distributed computing examples of synchronous systems where processes may crash.

Semantical Analysis of Intuitionistic Modal Logics between CK and IK

Abstract:The intuitionistic modal logics considered between Constructive K (CK) and Intuitionistic K (IK) differ in their treatment of the possibility (diamond) connective. It was recently rediscovered that some logics between CK and IK also disagree on their diamond-free fragments, with only some remaining conservative over the standard axiomatisation of intuitionistic modal logic with necessity (box) alone. We show that relational Kripke semantics for CK can be extended with frame conditions for all axioms in the standard axiomatisation of IK, as well as other axioms previously studied. This allows us to answer open questions about the (non-)conservativity of such logics over intuitionistic modal logic without diamond. Our results are formalised using the Coq Proof Assistant.

Abstract:The most widely used attractive logical account of knowledge uses standard epistemic models, i.e., graphs whose edges are indistinguishability relations for agents. In this paper, we discuss more general topological models for a multi-agent epistemic language, whose main uses so far have been in reasoning about space. We show that this more geometrical perspective afiords greater powers of distinction in the study of common knowledge, deflning new collective agents, and merging information for groups of agents. 1. Epistemic logic in its standard guise 1.1. Basic epistemic logic. Epistemic logic is in wide use today as a description of knowledge and ignorance for agents in philosophy (14), computer science (13), (22), game theory (12), and other areas. In this paper, we assume familiarity with the basic language of propositional epistemic logic, interpreted over multi-agent S4 models whose accessibility relations are re∞exive and transitive. Alternative model classes occur, too, such as equivalence relations for each agent in multi-agent S5{but our discussion is largely independent from such choices. The key semantic clause about an agent's knowledge of a proposition says that Kiholds at a world x if and only ifis true in all worlds y accessible for i from x. That is, the epis- temic knowledge modality is really a modal box ⁄i`. For technical convenience, we will use the latter notation for knowledge in the rest of this paper. The main modern interest in epistemic logic has to do with analyzing iterated knowledge of agents about themselves and what others know, for purposes of communication and interaction. Cf. (4), (9) on systems that combine epistemic logic and dynamic logic to describe information update in groups of agents. A simple example of how the basic logic works is the model in Figure 1.

Abstract:The present paper provides an analysis of the existing proof systems for dynamic epistemic logic from the viewpoint of proof-theoretic semantics. Dynamic epistemic logic is one of the best known members of a family of logical systems which have been successfully applied to diverse scientific disciplines, but the proof theoretic treatment of which presents many difficulties. After an illustration of the proof-theoretic semantic principles most relevant to the treatment of logical connectives, we turn to illustrating the main features of display calculi, a proof-theoretic paradigm which has been successfully employed to give a proof-theoretic semantic account of modal and substructural logics. Then, we review some of the most significant proposals of proof systems for dynamic epistemic logics, and we critically reflect on them in the light of the previously introduced proof-theoretic semantic principles. The contributions of the present paper include a generalisation of Belnap's cut elimination metatheorem for display calculi, and a revised version of the display-style calculus <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://D.EAK" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. We verify that the revised version satisfies the previously mentioned proof-theoretic semantic principles, and show that it enjoys cut elimination as a consequence of the generalised metatheorem.

Abstract:We compare different epistemic notions in the presence of awareness of propositional variables: the logics of implicit knowledge (in which explicit knowledge is definable), explicit knowledge, and speculative knowledge. Different notions of bisimulation are suitable for these logics. We provide correspondence between bisimulation and modal equivalence on image-finite models for these logics. The logic of speculative knowledge is equally expressive as the logic of explicit knowledge, and the logic of implicit knowledge is more expressive than both. We also provide axiomatizations for the three logics -- only the one for speculative knowledge is novel. Then we move to the study of dynamics by recalling action models incorporating awareness. We show that any conceivable change of knowledge or awareness can be modelled in this setting, we give a complete axiomatization for the dynamic logic of implicit knowledge. The dynamic versions of all three logics are, surprising, equally expressive.
Parametric Constructive Kripke-Semantics for Standard Multi-Agent Belief and Knowledge (Knowledge As Unbiased Belief)

Abstract:We propose parametric constructive Kripke-semantics for multi-agent KD45-belief and S5-knowledge in terms of elementary set-theoretic constructions of two basic functional building blocks, namely bias (or viewpoint) and visibility, functioning also as the parameters of the doxastic and epistemic accessibility relation. The doxastic accessibility relates two possible worlds whenever the application of the composition of bias with visibility to the first world is equal to the application of visibility to the second world. The epistemic accessibility is the transitive closure of the union of our doxastic accessibility and its converse. Therefrom, accessibility relations for common and distributed belief and knowledge can be constructed in a standard way. As a result, we obtain a general definition of knowledge in terms of belief that enables us to view S5-knowledge as accurate (unbiased and thus true) KD45-belief, negation-complete belief and knowledge as exact KD45-belief and S5-knowledge, respectively, and perfect S5-knowledge as precise (exact and accurate) KD45-belief, and all this generically for arbitrary functions of bias and visibility. Our results can be seen as a semantic complement to previous foundational results by Halpern et al. about the (un)definability and (non-)reducibility of knowledge in terms of and to belief, respectively.

Epistemic Logic over Similarity Graphs: Common, Distributed and Mutual Knowledge

Abstract:In this paper, we delve into the study of epistemic logics, interpreted through similarity models based on weighted graphs. We explore eight languages that extend the traditional epistemic language by incorporating modalities of common, distributed, and mutual knowledge. The concept of individual knowledge is redefined under these similarity models. It is no longer just a matter of personal knowledge, but is now enriched and understood as knowledge under the individual's epistemic ability. Common knowledge is presented as higher-order knowledge that is universally known to any degree, a definition that aligns with existing literature. We reframe distributed knowledge as a form of knowledge acquired by collectively leveraging the abilities of a group of agents. In contrast, mutual knowledge is defined as the knowledge obtained through the shared abilities of a group. We then focus on the resulting logics, examining their relative expressivity, semantic correspondence to the classical epistemic logic, proof systems and the computational complexity associated with the model checking problem and the satisfiability/validity problem. This paper offers significant insights into the logical analysis and understanding of these enriched forms of knowledge, contributing to the broader discourse on epistemic logic.

Abstract:Several tasks in artificial intelligence require to be able to find models about knowledge dynamics. They include belief revision, fusion and belief merging, and abduction. In this paper we exploit the algebraic framework of mathematical morphology in the context of propositional logic, and define operations such as dilation or erosion of a set of formulas. We derive concrete operators, based on a semantic approach, that have an intuitive interpretation and that are formally well behaved, to perform revision, fusion and abduction. Computation and tractability are addressed, and simple examples illustrate the typical results that can be obtained.
