Abstract:Background: Solid waste spent coffee grounds (SCGs) are generated in the process of producing coffee products. SCGs currently exist in the main treatment methods of incineration and sanitary landfill, causing the waste of resources and environmental pollution. It is urgent to establish and improve the large-scale biological joint transformation process system for comprehensive utilization of SCGs. Scope and approach: This paper firstly summarizes the processing technology of SCGs including its main compositions and extraction methods. Furthermore, an overview of SCGs utilization is presented in following aspects consists of agronomy and composting, fermentation, bioremediation, bioenergy, carbon points, food and cosmetics. Finally, it provides an outlook on its future utilization and research directions. Key findings and conclusions: SCGs are rich in beneficial components, being considered as high value-added biomass resources with great potential for sustainable development. After appropriate disposal and resource transformation, SCGs have been widely applied in fields of food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, energy and materials sectors. The technologies currently available make the full utilization of SCGs possible, taking into account safety and social acceptance. Utilizing the power of innovation and biotechnology to upcycle SCGs is a way to turn food waste into treasure and achieve sustainable social green development.

Abstract:In conventional wastewater bio-treatment, little attention has been paid on the bio-degradation of grease, causing low efficiency in the process, and thereby, further study should be made on the development and application of related mature and effective bio-treatment techniques. This paper summarized the pathways and mechanisms of grease bio-degradation in wastewater treatment, with the focus on the research progress in the functional microbes involved in lipid hydrolysis and long-chain fatty acid degradation, and briefly introduced a series of new treatment technologies based on the habitat differences of the functional microbes. The key breakthrough directions in the technological study of grease bio-degradation were prospected, expecting to provide theoretical guidance to the development of the related technologies.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion technology is a widely used technology for food waste treatment. It can produce clean fuel gas and realize harmless treatment of waste. Different ways of utilizing the digestion products vary depending on the market demand and production technology. In this paper, life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to analyse the environmental impacts of different processes in food waste anaerobic digestion treatment and compare different utilization strategies of digestion products especially the digestate. The results of this study indicated that the incineration of digestate had advantages in most environmental impacts except global warming potential (GWP), compared with composting as fertilizers. Besides that, incineration had the lower energy efficiency due to drying heat demand. The high energy conversion efficiency of internal combustion engine contributed much to reducing environmental impacts. It’s worth mentioning that the sufficient combustion performance of micro-turbine resulted in smaller global warming potential (GWP) and eutrophication potential (EP).

Abstract:Treatment and disposal of municipal sewage sludge is one of the hot issues in recent years, and the potential utilization of sludge as energy is gradually attracting the attention of researchers. On the basis of introduction of sludge composition and properties,the main technologies and methods of utilization of sludge as energy were summarized,including anaerobic digestion,pyrolysis,gasification, combustion,microbial fuel cells and so on. In this paper each technology or method was discussed in the aspects of its principle,process,products and pollution control. The process of combustion and co-combustion can provide a way to realize energy conversion directly and has been promoted and applied nowadays. But it has the disadvantages of high costs and subsequent problems such as pollution gases and ash disposal during the process. Secondary pollution such as pollution gas emission can be avoided using gasification and pyrolysis,but the process and equipment are relatively complicated,preventing their industrial applications. Anaerobic digestion and microbial fuel cell technologies can achieve not only sludge reduction,but also energy production through the action of microorganisms,and they seem to be the likely direction of utilizing sludge as energy.

Abstract:Purpose Urbanization and industrialization in China has resulted in a dramatic increase in the volume of wastewater and sewage sludge produced from wastewater treatment plants. Problems associated with sewage sludge have attracted increasing attention from the public and urban planners. How to manage sludge in an economically and environmentally acceptable manner is one of the critical issues that modern societies are facing. Methods Sludge treatment systems consist of thickening, dewatering, and several different alternative main treatments (anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion, drying, composting, and incineration). Agricultural application, landfill, and incineration are the principal disposal methods for sewage sludge in China. However, sewage sludge disposal in the future should focus on resource recovery, reducing environmental impacts and saving economic costs. Results The reuse of biosolids in all scenarios can be environmentally beneficial and cost-effective. Anaerobic digestion followed by land application is the preferable options due to low economic and energy costs and material reuse. Conclusion It is necessary to formulate a standard suitable for the utilization of sewage sludge in China.

Abstract:Because of the requirements for accelerating the construction of a green, low-carbon, and recycling economy development system, the petrochemical industry has been paying attention to green and low-carbon transformations and innovations. Oily sludge is a type of bulk hazardous solid waste from various sources that significantly harms the environment. Chemical heat washing of oily sludge represents a large proportion of the treatment technology for oily sludge, which can be used individually and has many applications in joint treatment with other processes. However, research on the formulation of cleaning agents for this process has mainly focused on the surfactant at this stage, and many studies have demonstrated the secondary pollution of surfactant; thus, research on reducing or replacing surfactants as cleaning agents has been conducted. This review highlights the research progress of chemical heat washing of oily sludge according to the classification of cleaning agents and describes the reasons for the stabilization of currently recognized oily sludge, the chemical heat washing process, and the mechanism of oil–soil separation. Finally, the research direction for new emulsions as new cleaning agents to replace surfactants is set out.

In spite of the serious situation of industrial waste, China has realized it and made great progress in establishing corresponding legislation system, taking a series of administrative measures and developing effective treatment and disposal technologies. Abstract:China now faces double challenges of water resources shortage and severe water pollution. To resolve Chinese water pollution problems and reduce its impacts on human health, economic growth and social development, the situation of wastewater treatment was investigated. Excess sludge and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted during wastewater treatment were also surveyed. It is concluded that Chinese water pollution problems should be systematically resolved with inclusion of wastewater and the solid waste and GHGs generated during wastewater treatment. Strategies proposed for the wastewater treatment in China herein were also adequate for other countries, especially for the developing countries with similar economic conditions to China.
Comprehensive assessment of food waste treatment emission reduction in China: a life cycle perspective

Abstract:Food waste (FW) treatment has attracted increasing attention since waste classification occurred in China. Analyzing the environmental and economic impacts of different FW treatment technologies is required. In this study, four FW treatments, i.e., anaerobic digestion, black soldier fly (BSF) bioconversion, composting, and landfill, were evaluated using life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost (LCC). LCA results show that anaerobic digestion outperforms the other technologies, while LCC results indicate anaerobic digestion has the lowest economic benefits ($5.16) and landfill has the highest ($14.22). Bioconversion has the highest product revenue ($37.98). FW anaerobic digestion followed by treating digestate and waste crude oil was employed to investigate the environmental differences between waste classification and mixed incineration. Digestate gasification and conversion of waste crude oil to biodiesel are found to be environmentally friendly, and waste classification outperforms mixed incineration. Furthermore, we explored national-level environmental emission reduction with anaerobic digestion as the dominant technology via increasing resource utilization rate and applying household FW disposers. Results display that a 60% resource utilization rate decreases the overall environmental impact by 36.68% compared with current situation, and treating household FW separately at the source can further lead to emission reduction. This study provides a reference for selecting FW technologies for countries worldwide from environmental and economic perspectives, as well as a direction of resource utilization for how to reduce environmental emissions from treating the total FW produced by all humanity.

Abstract:Abstract The oily sludge has a wide range of sources and complex composition, the corresponding treatment technology and equipment also show a diversified trend, after the combined treatment of oily sludge, the oily sludge can meet the technical requirements of resource utilization and harmless treatment. Through the actual and literature research, the principle, scope, characteristics and development of the commonly used oily sludge treatment methods at home and abroad are summarized, the application status of several new oily sludge combined treatment technologies in China’s petrochemical enterprises is introduced, including sieving fluidization-tempering-mechanical dehydration technology, electrochemical bio-coupling advanced treatment technology, sludge centrifugal dewatering-superheated steam injection treatment technology, hot-washing coupling treatment technology and microbial-plant combined treatment technology, summarized whether the oil content of the residue after treatment by the existing treatment method meets the standard requirements of HJ 607-2011 “Technical Specifications for Pollution Control of Used Mineral Oil Recovery, Recycle and Reuse” and the resource utilization of the residue goes. The problems and treatment effects of the integrated oil sludge treatment technology in application have not yet been treated in a satisfactory manner to completely treat all oily sludge, and further research is needed.

Abstract:Global waste is expected to grow substantially by 2050, therefore, defining an effective waste management strategy is a crucial topic for both industry and academia. Nowadays, food and green waste, in particular, represent a large share of the total waste production. All this considered, effectively processing and eventually reusing materials such as waste cooking oil is of paramount importance. This study investigates the potential environmental impact and the primary energy consumption for three waste cooking oil valorization pathways i.e. biodiesel, direct burning fuel, additive for recycling aged-asphalt, as well as a new application, i.e. phase change material, compared to their specific more common alternative based on a cradle-to-gate approach. The aim is to identify and recommend the most advantageous alternative in terms of environmental impact. Results showed that the waste cooking oil has a lower impact in all comparisons made, except as phase change material. The less effective performance in some cases was compensated by the waste oil entry as a burden-free resource under an attributional model. The best profile of the waste cooking oil is as direct burning fuel. However, the binder asphalt substitution is highly recommended due to the nature of the application. The major obstacles to the waste cooking oil usage are the limited stock, composition and quality variability, and the difficulty of proper collection.

Abstract:More than 30 million tons of kitchen wastes (KW) are produced in China every year. Approximately 80% of the collected KW has been directly utilized as feedstuff in pig farms in China, which is facing strict restrictions by China's Ministry of Agriculture due to concerns of foot and mouth disease, and raw materials for illegal extraction of hogwash oil, which is unsanitary and can cause serious illness. In addition, the universal concern on environmental protection, resource utilization and food safety has brought increasing research on KW processing technology. According to the policy perspective on promoting the recycling application and resource saving of KW, developing resource-saving and environment-friendly society as well as circular economy and protecting the ecological environment in both China (FAGAIHUANZI [2010] No. 1020) and other countries, it is required especially in China that the construction of pilot projects should be conducted overall planning and combinational optimization to enhance resource-oriented utilization and harmless treatment of three phases in KW, including oil, solid and liquid phase (FAGAIHUANZI [2010] No. 1020). Because of policy encouragement, environmental concern and economic incentives by local and central governments in China, more diverse methods after thermal pretreatment should be developed as the amount of KW production increases rapidly. Besides, basing on the increasing universal concern on safety, energy and environmental preservation, finding proper disposal methods of KW for energy production, enhancing biogas production and reducing the amount of final residue is extremely important. In this regard, this paper aims at a comprehensive study on current treatment situations of KW in China and suggests several solutions to China's KW treatment.
