Abstract:We studied the activity of 19 captive red pandas(Ailurus fulgens)by target sampling and instantaneous scan sampling during November-December 2008 at Yao Jia Ping Panda Breeding Base,Yunnan,China.Captive red pandas spent most of their time resting(56.2%),followed by locomotion(25.1%),and feeding(9.9%).Other activities had lower percentages.Resting accounted for the highest percentage of total activity in all survey periods except the period from 9:00- 9:55,when the lowest recorded percentage was 16.3%.There were four concentrated periods of resting:8:00-8:55, 11:00-11:55,14:00-14:55,and 17:00-17:55.Locomotion was concentrated in three periods:9:00-9:55,13:00- 13:55,and 15:00-15:55.Feeding was concentrated in two periods:9:00-9:55 and 19:00-19:55.Territory marking was more frequent in the periods 9:00-9:55,10:00-10:55,and 13:00-13:55,when percentages exceeded 5%.Grooming was concentrated in the period 9:00-9:55.Territory marking and grooming accounted for less than 5%in other periods.Time budgets differed by age group.Older pandas showed higher percentages at rest(72%),higher than for young adult and immature individuals.Immature pandas spent more time resting, locomoting, and territory marking than did adults.Adults showed groomed more than elderly and immature pandas.
