Abstract:Aldehyde oxidases (AO,EC1.2.3.1) are a group of proteins which belong to molybdo-flavoenzyme family (MFE).They usually consist of a homodimer with two identical subunits, each of which has two [2Fe-2S]redox-active centers, one flavin cofactor and one substrate binding domain. These structural features are similar to xanthine oxidation-reductases,another member of the MFE family.AO exhibits oxidation activity towards aldehydes and hydroxylation activity towards N-heterocyclic compounds. It plays an important role in many metabolic processes of organisms. In this review, research progress in the structure, reaction mechanism, and phylogenesis of aldehyde oxidases was summarized with special emphasis on the progress obtained in insect.
