Abstract:A class of two-neuron networks with resonant bilinear terms is considered. The stability of the zero equilibrium and existence of Hopf bifurcation is studied. It is shown that the zero equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable when the time delay is small enough, while change of stability of the zero equilibrium will cause a bifurcating periodic solution as the time delay passes through a sequence of critical values. Some explicit formulae for determining the stability and the direction of the Hopf bifurcation periodic solutions bifurcating from Hopf bifurcations are obtained by using the normal form theory and center manifold theory. Finally, numerical simulations supporting the theoretical analysis are carried out.

Abstract:Hopf bifurcation, as the most representative dynamic bifurcation, is closely related to the stability of many engineering structures. In this work, the stochastic Hopf bifurcation (SHB) of a controlled quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system (H.S.) of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) is investigated, where the system is subjected to wide-band noise and controlled by a Fractional-order Proportional-Derivative (FOPD) controller with time delay. By decoupling FOPD control force and simplifying it without time delay, the averaged Itô differential equations of the approximated system are derived with the technique of stochastic averaging. Then, the average bifurcation parameter expression of system is obtained, which can determine the criterion of the SHB deduced by the FOPD control force. Last, an illustration of coupled Rayleigh oscillators is given to demonstrate the validity of the procedure. The influences of time delay, noise intensities and fractional order on the system SHB are discussed.

Abstract:An efficient method is proposed to study delay-induced strong resonant double Hopf bifurcation for nonlinear systems with time delay. As an illustration, the proposed method is employed to investigate the 1:2 double Hopf bifurcation in the van der Pol system with time delay. Dynamics arising from the bifurcation are classified qualitatively and expressed approximately in a closed form for either square or cubic nonlinearity. The results show that 1:2 resonance can lead to codimension-three and codimension-two bifurcations. The validity of analytical predictions is shown by their consistency with numerical simulations. Abstract:A time-delayed quadratic nonlinear mechanical system can exhibit two coexisting stable bifurcating solutions (SBSs) after two-to-one resonant Hopf bifurcations occur in the corresponding autonomous time-delayed system. One SBS is of small-amplitude and has the Hopf bifurcation frequencies (HBFs), while the other is of large-amplitude and contains the shifted Hopf bifurcation frequencies (the shifted HBFs). When the forcing frequency is tuned to be the sum of two HBFs or the sum of two shifted HBFs, two families of additive resonances can be induced in the forced response. The forced response under the additive resonance related to the HBFs can demonstrate periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic motion. On the contrary, the forced response under the additive resonance associated with the shifted HBFs may exhibit period-three periodic motion and quasi-periodic motion. Bifurcation diagrams, time trajectories, frequency spectra, phase portraits and Poincaré sections are presented to show periodic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic motion of the time-delayed nonlinear system under the two families of additive resonances.

Abstract:In this paper, a general and systematic scheme is provided to research strong and weak resonances derived from delay-induced various double Hopf bifurcations in delayed differential systems. The method of multiple scales is extended to obtain a common complex amplitude equation when the double Hopf bifurcation with frequency ratio k1:k2occurs in the systems under consideration. By analyzing the complex amplitude equation, we give the conditions of the strong and weak resonances respectively in the analytical expressions. The weak resonances correspond to the codimension-two double Hopf bifurcations since the amplitudes and the phases may be decoupled, but the strong resonances to the codimension-three double Hopf bifurcations in the system. It is seen that the weak resonances happen in the system even for a lower-order ratio, i.e. k1+ k2≤ 4. As applications, two examples are displayed. Three cases of the delay-induced resonance with 1:2, 1:3, 1:5 and [Formula: see text] are discussed in detail and the corresponding normals are represented. Thus, the relative dynamical behaviors can be easily classified in the physical parameter space in terms of nonlinear dynamics. The results show the provided conditions may be used to determine that a resonance is strong or weak.

Abstract:This paper discusses the 1:1 resonant Hopf bifurcations and nilpotent singularity of non-semisimple for feed-forward chains with delay. The analytical formulas show that at synchrony-breaking bifurcation points the center manifold inherits a feed-forward structure. Using this structure, an analytical formula of normal form is derived to provide that near the points of 1:1 resonant Hopf bifurcation the amplitude of periodic solutions grows at the surprising rate of mu 1/6 due to resonance, rather than the expected rate of mu 1/2. Bifurcation analysis of quasi-periodic orbits of mechanical systems with 1:2 internal resonance via spectral submanifolds

Abstract:A 1:2 internally resonant mechanical system can undergo secondary Hopf (Neimark-Sacker) bifurcations, resulting in a quasi-periodic response when the system is subject to harmonic excitation. While these quasi-periodic orbits have been observed in practice, their bifurcations are not well studied, especially in high-dimensional mechanical systems. This is mainly because of the challenges associated with the computation and bifurcation detection of these quasi-periodic motions. Here we present a computational framework to address these challenges via reductions on spectral submanifolds, which transforms quasi-periodic orbits of high-dimensional systems as limit cycles of four-dimensional reduced-order models. We apply the proposed framework to analyze bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits in several mechanical systems exhibiting 1:2 internal resonance, including a finite element model of a shallow-curved shell. We uncover local bifurcations such as period-doubling and saddle-node, as well as global bifurcations such as homoclinic connections, isolas, and simple bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits. We also observe cascades of period-doubling bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits that eventually result in chaotic motions, as well as the coexistence of chaotic and quasi-periodic attractors. These findings elucidate the complex bifurcation mechanism of quasi-periodic orbits in 1:2 internally resonant systems.

Abstract:It has been widely confirmed that symmetry can lead to synchronization. However, it is also evident that synchronization or cluster synchronization phenomena commonly occur in asymmetric networks. In this article, we study the Hopf bifurcation of anti-synchronous periodic solutions in a class of asymmetric coupled oscillator systems. In contrast to symmetric synchronous systems, e.g., pendulums with Huygens' coupling, oscillators in ring networks, neurons in mirror symmetric networks, the systems we investigated exhibit anti-synchronous periodic solutions that do not align with their symmetry. Due to the absence of symmetry in these systems, the simultaneous diagonalization between the Jacobi matrix of equilibrium and the rotating matrix representing the types of synchronous solutions is mathematically impossible. This introduces greater complexity in the analysis of dynamics. The main innovation of this paper is to establish the Hopf bifurcation of the rotating periodic solutions for such asymmetric systems. By demonstrating the bifurcation of anti-synchronous periodic solutions in two coupled oscillator systems with three and four oscillators, corresponding to whether the Jacobi matrix of the system is semi-simple, we illustrate the validity of our method.

Abstract:Stochastic resonance phenomena have been studied in a non-magnetized plasma. A white Gaussian noise is externally applied to coherently interact with the intrinsic periodic driven force of the system. Signal-to-noise ratio is improved by external noise in the fixed-point region near a Hopf bifurcation of the system. The experimental results are consistent with the predictions given by one-dimensional stochastic resonance model for an over-damping bistable system. Hopf bifurcation is found to be caused by the variation of the potential barrier of the system.

Abstract:A simple model described by an autonomous continuous delayed differential equation with one variable, proposed by Uçar, is considered in this paper. We will show that Hopf bifurcations occur in this simple system. The stability of bifurcating periodic solutions and the direction of Hopf bifurcations are determined by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The dynamical behavior of a general n-dimensional delay differential equation (DDE) around a 1:3 resonant double Hopf bifurcation point is analyzed. The method of multiple scales is used to obtain complex bifurcation equations. By expressing complex amplitudes in a mixed polar-Cartesian representation, the complex bifurcation equations are again obtained in real form. As an illustration, a system of two coupled van der Pol oscillators is considered and a set of parameter values for which a 1:3 resonant double Hopf bifurcation occurs is established. The dynamical behavior around the resonant double Hopf bifurcation point is analyzed in terms of three control parameters. The validity of analytical results is shown by their consistency with numerical simulations.

Abstract:This note revisits an extended Lorenz system, which was presented in the paper entitled “Hopf bifurcations in an extended Lorenz system” by Zhou et al. [2017]. On the one hand, one points out and corrects some wrong results in that paper on the Hopf bifurcation at the symmetric equilibria [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. On the other hand, combining Lyapunov function and the concepts of [Formula: see text]- and [Formula: see text]-limit sets, it is rigorously proved that there exists two and only two heteroclinic trajectories but no homoclinic trajectories under some certain conditions of its parameters and initial values. In addition, numerical simulations illustrate the consistence with the theoretical conclusions. The results together not only improve and complement the known ones, but also provide support in some future applications.

Abstract:An efficient method, called the perturbation‐incremental scheme (PIS), is proposed to study, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the delay‐induced weak or high‐order resonant double Hopf bifurcation and the dynamics arising from the bifurcation of nonlinear systems with delayed feedback. The scheme is described in two steps, namely, the perturbation and the incremental steps, when the time delay and the feedback gain are taken as the bifurcation parameters. As for applications, the method is employed to investigate the delay‐induced weak resonant double Hopf bifurcation and dynamics in the van der Pol–Duffing and the Stuart–Landau systems with delayed feedback. Abstract:We seize some new dynamics of a Lorenz-like system: <(x)over dot> = a(y-x), y = dy-xz, z = -bz + fx(2) + gxy, such as for the Hopf bifurcation, the behavior of non-isolated equilibria, the existence of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles and homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits. In particular, our new discovery is that the system has also two heteroclinic orbits for bg = 2a(f + g) and a > d > 0 other than known bg > 2a(f + g) and a > d > 0, whose proof is completely different from known case. All the theoretical results obtained are also verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper is concerned with the effect of time delayed feedbacks in a nonlinear oscillator with external forcing. The particular attention is focused on the case that the corresponding linear system has two pairs of purely imaginary eigenvalues at a critical point, giving rise to double Hopf bifurcations. An analytical approach is used to find the explicit expressions for the critical values of the system parameters at which nonresonant or resonant Hopf bifurcations may occur. A fourth-order Ronge-Kutta numerical integration scheme is employed to obtain the dynamical solutions in the vicinity of the critical point. Both the cases with and without the external forcing are studied. It has been found that the system exhibits very rich complex dynamics, including periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic motions. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis is carried out to show that chaotic motions are very sensitive to the time delay. This suggests that the time delay can be used: (1) to control bifurcations and chaos; and (2) to anticontrol (or generate) bifurcations and chaos.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a quadratic chaotic system modeling self-excited and hidden attractors which is described by a system of three nonlinear ordinary differential equations with three real parameters. The primary goal is to establish the existence of two limit cycles that bifurcate based on the system’s nature as an electronic circuits model, specifically via Hopf bifurcation. Notably, the application of the first and second Lyapunov coefficients is utilized to demonstrate the bifurcation of two limit cycles from an equilibrium point near a Hopf critical point. Furthermore, employing the first-order averaging theory enables us to confirm the presence of unstable periodic orbits originating from the zero-Hopf equilibrium.

Abstract:We analyze the characteristics of the global attractor of a type of dissipative nonautonomous dynamical systems in terms of the Sacker and Sell spectrum of its linear part. The model gives rise to a pattern of nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation which can be understood as a generalization of the classical autonomous one. We pay special attention to the dynamics at the bifurcation point, showing the possibility of occurrence of Li–Yorke chaos in the corresponding attractor and hence of a high degree of unpredictability.
