Abstract:Let G be a simple graph with n vertices and m edges and Gc be its complement. Let δ(G)=δ and Δ(G)=Δ be the minimum degree and the maximum degree of vertices of G, respectively. In this paper, we present a sharp upper bound for the Laplacian spectral radius as follows:λ1(G)⩽(Δ+δ−1)+(Δ+δ−1)2+4(4m−2δ(n−1))2.Equality holds if and only if G is a connected regular bipartite graph. Another result of the paper is an upper bound for the Laplacian spectral radius of the Nordhaus–Gaddum type. We prove thatλ1(G)+λ1(Gc)⩽n−2+(Δ+δ+1−n)2+n2+4(Δ−δ)(n−1).

Abstract:Let G be a simple graph and λ ( G ) the spectral radius of G . For k ≥ 2 , a k ‐edge decomposition ( H 1 , ... , H k ) is k spanning subgraphs such that their edge sets form a k ‐partition of the edge set of G . In this paper, we obtain some sharp lower and upper bounds for λ ( H 1 ) + ⋯ + λ ( H k ) in terms of the clique number of H i and the size of G , and discuss what k ‐edge decomposition ( H 1 , ... , H k ) can maximize λ ( H 1 ) + ⋯ + λ ( H k ) when G is a complete graph. These generalize some Nordhaus–Gaddum‐type results on spectral radius for k = 2 , due to Nosal, Hong and Shu, and Nikiforov.

Abstract:Let G be a simple graph with n vertices, m edges, diameter D and degree sequence d(1), d(2), ..., d(n), and let lambda(1)(G) be the largest Laplacian eigenvalue of G. Denote Delta = max{d(i) : 1 <= i <= n}, ((alpha)t)(i) = Sigma(i similar to j) d(j)(alpha) and ((alpha)m)(i) = ((alpha)t)(i)/d(i)(alpha), where alpha is a real number. In this article, we first give an upper bound on lambda(1)(G) for a non-regular graph involving Delta and D; next present two upper bounds on lambda(1)(G) for a connected graph in terms of d(i) and ((alpha)m)(i); at last obtain a lower bound on lambda(1)(G) for a connected bipartite graph in terms of d(i) and ((alpha)t)(i). Some known results are shown to be the consequences of our theorems.

Abstract:The spectral radius of a graph is the largest eigenvalue of adjacency matrix of the graph and its Laplacian spectral radius is the largest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix which is the difference of the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees and the adjacency matrix. Some sharp bounds are obtained for the (Laplacian) spectral radii of connected graphs. As consequences, some (sharp) upper bounds of the Nordhaus–Gaddum type are also obtained for the sum of (Laplacian) spectral radii of a connected graph and its connected complement.

Abstract:Let G be a simple connected undirected graph. The Laplacian spectral ratio of G is defined as the quotient between the largest and second smallest Laplacian eigenvalues of G , which is an important parameter in graph theory and networks. We obtain some bounds of the Laplacian spectral ratio in terms of the number of the spanning trees and the sum of powers of the Laplacian eigenvalues. In addition, we study the extremal Laplacian spectral ratio among trees with n vertices, which improves some known results of Z. You and B. Liu (2012).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$, and let $q_1(G)\geq q_2(G)\geq\cdots\geq q_n(G)$ denote the signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. Ashraf and Tayfeh-Rezaie [Electron. J. Combin. 21 (3) (2014) \#P3.6] showed that $q_1(G)+q_1(\overline{G})\leq 3n-4$, with equality holding if and only if $G$ or $\overline{G}$ is the star $K_{1,n-1}$. In this paper, we discuss the following problem: for $n\geq6$, does $q_2(G)+q_2(\overline{G})\leq 2n-5$ always hold? We provide positive answers to this problem for the graphs with disconnected complements and the bipartite graphs, and determine the graphs attaining the bound. Moreover, we show that $q_2(G)+q_2(\overline{G})\geq n-2$, and the extremal graphs are also characterized.

Abstract:For a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with normalized Laplacian eigenvalues $0 = \lambda_1(G) \leq \lambda_2(G) \leq \cdots \leq \lambda_n(G)$ and graph complement $G^c$, we prove that \begin{equation*} \max\{\lambda_2(G),\lambda_2(G^c)\}\geq \frac{2}{n^2}. \end{equation*} We do this by way of lower bounding $\max\{i(G), i(G^c)\}$ and $\max\{h(G), h(G^c)\}$ where $i(G)$ and $h(G)$ denote the isoperimetric number and Cheeger constant of $G$, respectively.

Abstract:A Nordhaus-Gaddum theorem states bounds on p(G)+p(G ̅) and p(G)⋅p(G ̅) for some graph parameter p(G) . We consider the sum upper bound for degeneracy, chromatic number, fractional and circular chromatic number, list chromatic number, span (for L(2,1) labeling), and point partition number. Viewing {G,G ̅} as a decomposition of Kn , we describe a strategy to determine the extremal decompositions for these parameters. This produces short proofs of several existing results as well as several new theorems.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices, with complement $\overline{G}$. The spectral gap of the transition probability matrix of a random walk on $G$ is used to estimate how fast the random walk becomes stationary. We prove that the larger spectral gap of $G$ and $\overline{G}$ is $\Omega(1/n)$. Moreover, if all degrees are $\Omega(n)$ and $n-\Omega(n)$, then the larger spectral gap of $G$ and $\overline{G}$ is $\Theta(1)$. We also show that if the maximum degree is $n-O(1)$ or if $G$ is a join of two graphs, then the spectral gap of $G$ is $\Omega(1/n)$. Finally, we provide a family of connected graphs with connected complements such that the larger spectral gap of $G$ and $\overline{G}$ is $O(1/n^{3/4})$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple connected graph and $\mu_1(G) \geq \mu_2(G) \geq \cdots \geq \mu_n(G)$ be the Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. Let $\overline{G}$ be the complement of $G$. Einollahzadeh et al.[J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 151(2021), 235–249] proved that $\mu_{n-1}(G)+\mu_{n-1}(\overline{G})\geq 1$. Grijò et al. [Discrete Appl. Math., 267(2019), 176–183] conjectured that $\mu_{n-2}(G)+\mu_{n-2}(\overline{G})\geq 2$ for any graph and proved it to be true for some graphs. In this paper, we prove $\mu_{n-2}(G)+\mu_{n-2}(\overline{G})\geq 2$ is true for some new graphs. Furthermore, we propose a more general conjecture that $\mu_k(G)+\mu_k(\overline{G})\geq n-k$ holds for any graph $G$, with equality if and only if $G$ or $\overline{G}$ is isomorphic to $K_{n-k}\vee H$, where $H$ is a disconnected graph on $k$ vertices and has at least $n-k+1$ connected components. And we prove that it is true for $k\leq \frac{n+1}{2}$, for unicyclic graphs, bicyclic graphs, threshold graphs, bipartite graphs, regular graphs, complete multipartite graphs and c-cyclic graphs when $n\geq 2c+8$.

Abstract:If $Tr(G)$ and $D(G)$ are respectively the diagonal matrix of vertex transmission degrees and distance matrix of a connected graph $G$, the generalized distance matrix $D_{\alpha}(G)$ is defined as $D_{\alpha}(G)=\alpha ~Tr(G)+(1-\alpha)~D(G)$, where $0\leq \alpha \leq 1$. If $\rho_1 \geq \rho_2 \geq \dots \geq \rho_n$ are the eigenvalues of $D_{\alpha}(G)$, the largest eigenvalue $\rho_1$ (or $\rho_{\alpha}(G)$) is called the spectral radius of the generalized distance matrix $D_{\alpha}(G)$. The generalized distance energy is defined as $E^{D_{\alpha}}(G)=\sum_{i=1}^{n}\left|\rho_i -\frac{2\alpha W(G)}{n}\right|$, where $W(G)$ is the Wiener index of $G$. In this paper, we obtain the bounds for the spectral radius $\rho_{\alpha}(G)$ and the generalized distance energy of $G$ involving Wiener index. We derive the Nordhaus-Gaddum type inequalities for the spectral radius and the generalized distance energy of $G$.

Abstract:Let ρ(D(G)) denote the distance spectral radius of a graph G and ∂(G→) denote the distance signless Laplacian spectral radius of a digraph G→. Let Gn,kD be the set of all k-connected graphs of order n with diameter D. In this paper, we first determine the unique graph with minimum distance spectral radius in Gn,kD; we then give sharp upper and lower bounds for the distance signless Laplacian spectral radius of strongly connected digraphs; we also characterize the digraphs having the maximal and minimal distance signless Laplacian spectral radii among all strongly connected digraphs; furthermore, we determine the extremal digraph with the minimal distance signless Laplacian spectral radius with given dichromatic number.

Abstract:We study Nordhaus-Gaddum problems for Kemeny's constant $\mathcal{K}(G)$ of a connected graph $G$. We prove bounds on $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ and the product $\mathcal{K}(G)\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})$ for various families of graphs. In particular, we show that if the maximum degree of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is $n-O(1)$ or $n-\Omega(n)$, then $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ is at most $O(n)$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple connected graph of order $n$ and $\partial(G)$ is the spectral radius of the distance matrix $D(G)$ of $G$. The transmission $D_i$ of vertex $i$ is the $i$-th row sum of $D(G)$. Denote by $D_{\max}(G)$ the maximum of transmissions over all vertices of $G$, and $\partial^Q(G)$ is the spectral radius of the distance signless Laplacian matrix $D(G)+\mbox{diag}(D_1,D_2,\ldots,D_n)$. In this paper, we present a sharp lower bound of $2D_{\max}(G)-\partial^Q(G)$ among all $n$-vertex connected graphs, and characterize the extremal graphs. Furthermore, we give the minimum values of respective $D_{\max}(G)-\partial(G)$ and $2D_{\max}(G)-\partial^Q(G)$ on trees and characterize the extremal trees.
