Abstract:The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stål, has become a major threat in tropical Asian and China since the rice green revolution of the 1960s. Currently, insecticide application remains the primary choice for controlling this rice insect pest, but heavy use of insecticides poses dangerous risks to beneficial natural enemies and pollinators, and stimulates N. lugens reproductivity, and has caused a resurgence of the pest in the major rice-planting regions throughout Asia. Achieving the long-lasting goal of sustainable management of N. lugens requires understanding of the molecular basis of outbreaks of the pest and the development of environment-friendly pest-control strategies. Here, we review the recent molecular advances in N. lugens research on the aspects of its endosymbionts, virus transmission, insecticide resistance, and interaction between N. lugens and rice plants. We also put forward further research directions that may shed some lights on management of the rice pest.

Abstract:Polyphagous thrips are among the most important economically pests that cause serious damage in various ornamental and vegetable crops throughout the world. Because of their small size and cryptic habits, a number of thrips species are easy to invade into new areas. For a long period, thrips control has mainly relied on frequent use of insecticides, which lead to a series of ecological problems. Although a number of alternative management tactics have been developed in many cropping systems, many invasive thrips continue to spread internationally and display vast damage potential. This chapter reviews microbial control of thrips with focus on the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Isaria fumosorosea and Lecanicillium lecanii. The strains of fungal pathogens that were screened and proven to be effective for control of thrips should be developed worldwide and available for growers. We also discuss three areas of future research that will be necessary in improving management programs of thrips.

Abstract:There are 36 genera with 69 species bamboo‐feeding true bugs in China. Their spacial diversity pattern showed preference in South China, with higher diversity areas located in the tropics and its surrounding areas. The Bambusoideae subfamily, originating in the late Cretaceous, has evolved to include over 1500 species globally. Notably, China hosts the richest diversity of Bambusoideae, with 728 species documented. After a long period of coevolution, plenty of animals could feed on these plants rich in cellulose and lignin. As an important group of pests and participants in the ecosystem, bamboo‐feeding true bugs (BFTBs, or bamboo‐feeding Heteropteran insects) have attracted the attention of researchers. However, the diversity and distribution of BFTBs still lack systematic and generalized research. In this study, we reviewed the BFTBs in China and simulated the diversity pattern and the driving forces of this pattern. A list of 36 genera with 69 species of BFTBs in China was obtained through paper review and field surveys. And their bamboo‐feeding habit had multiple independent origins. The spatial diversity pattern showed that the biodiversity hotspots of BFTBs are located in and around the tropics of southern China. Environmental driving force analysis showed that the minimum temperature of coldest month and annual precipitation were the dominant environmental factors shaping the spatial diversity of BFTBs. Our work quantified the diversity and distribution of BFTBs in China, providing fundamental data support for pest control and evolutionary research.

Abstract:The bamboo-feeding species of genus Scaphoideus Uhler (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae) from China are reviewed to include 7 species: S. conicaplateus Li & Dai, 2004 (China: Guizhou), S. fanjingensis Li & Dai, 2004 (China: Guizhou), S. festivus Matsumura, 1902 (China: Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Hunan, Beijing, Hebei, Henan, Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Taiwan; India; Sri Lanka; Japan; Korea), S. kumamotonis Matsumura, 1914 (China: Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet, Sichuan, Zhejiang and Henan; Japan), S. nigrigenatus Li, 1990 (China: Guizhou, Sichuan and Hubei), S. nigrivalveus Li & Wang, 2005 (China: Guizhou and Hubei) and S. yaanensis sp. nov. (China: Sichuan). All seven species are re-illustrated and photographed. The new species is described. A key to the bamboo-feeding species of Scaphoideus is also provided.
Review of research into outbreaks and management of rice planthoppers

Abstract:The three rice planthopper species,the small brown planthopper,brown planthopper and the white-backed planthopper,and their five transmitted viral diseases have become increasingly major pests since the 1960s. The frequent outbreaks of these pests have caused serious crop losses and threaten global food security. We searched domestic and foreign databases for papers published annually on each planthopper species to compare the annual temporal dynamics of each species. We also searched for papers published every 10 years on 5 main biological areas related to rice planthoppers. We introduce the main progress in research on these pests in the past half century,discuss the main research obstacles and propose research to develop sustainable management programs for these pests within intensified rice production systems.

Abstract:The complex influence of rice variety, fertilization timing, and insecticides on the population dynamics of Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) and Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), and their natural enemies was studied in rice in Hangzhou, China. In the early season, S. furcifera adults immigrated to japonica Xiushui 11 (XS11) in a much higher density than to indica-japonica hybrid Xieyou 413 (XY413), which resulted in a higher density of the egg population of successive generations in XS11, while the peak density of the population peak of the 2nd generation in XY413 was higher due to a higher growth rate. In both of the rice varieties, spraying organic phosphorous triazophos in mid-season (during the 1st generation of the planthoppers) induced a population resurgence of the 2nd generations of S. furcifera and N. lugens . The main mechanism for the resurgence was the stimulation of reproduction of the 1st-generation adults and reduction of the density of predators, which in turn increased the survival of the planthoppers. Plots that were fertilized early attracted more N. lugens immigrants, but did not necessarily attract S. furcifera. Reproduction of the S. furcifera immigrants was enhanced by early fertilization of the fields of both rice varieties. The negative correlation between population growth rate from the 1st to the 2nd generation of S. furcifera and the density of spiders during the same period demonstrates the potential of predators in the natural control of rice planthoppers.
Potential geographical distribution and habitat suitability analysis for two mirid predators Tytthus chinensis and Cyrtorhinus lividipennis (Hemiptera: Miridae) in rice fields based on MaxEnt model

Abstract:[Aim] The objective of this research is to analyze and predict the potential geographical distributions of two important mirid predators Tytthus chinensis and Cyrtorhinus lividipennis,of rice planthoppers,and to study the effects of climatic factors on their potential geographical distribution.[Methods] Maximum entropy niche-based modeling (MaxEnt) was used to predict species geographical distributions based on maximum entropy.The distribution records of the two mirid species and a set of environmental predictor variables were used to model the suitable geographical distributions of the two species.[Results] The results showed that the principal geographical distribution areas of T.chinensis were Southeast China,East Asia,Southeast Asia and parts of the Indonesia or within the geographical biomes of the Oriental and Australia.The suitable distribution areas of C.lividipennis were relatively broader in comparison with those of T.chinensis.In addition to the distribution area of T.chinensis,C.lividipennis could possibly survive in Shandong,Hebei,Shaanxi and Yunnan provinces in China,and the Amazon region as well.The suitability of T.chinensis and C.lividipennis was found to be affected significantly by the precipitation in the warmest season and the mean diurnal range.Especially,the precipitation in the warmest season exceeding 500 mm and the mean diurnal range monthly below 10℃ are the more favorable conditions for the distribution of T.chinensis and C.lividipennis.[Conclusion] Our results revealed that the suitable distribution of these two predators is primarily affected by the precipitation in the warmest season and the mean diurnal temperature range monthly.This study provides some important evidence for successful biological control of the two mirids in these potential distribution regions.

Abstract:The occurrence of green slender planthopper(Saccharosydne procerus)on water-bamboo(Zizania caduciflora)was studied.This paper reported morphological features,annually life history,and biological charactristic of S.procerus,and its natural enemies.In Zhejiang province,this insect pest has five generations annually,the second and fifth generation were seriously harm generations,while the third and fourth generation were slightly harm generations because of high temperature in July and August.The planthopper overwintered as diapaused egges in the dead leaves and sheathes of water-bamboo.

Abstract:With the rapid development of economic globalization, invasive species have become a far-reaching global issue. Impacts of invasive insects on agriculture, forestry, ecology, socio-economy and human health are becoming increasingly serious and cause for concern. In this paper, we introduce advances in theoretical and applied research on 14 invasive insects in China and summarize novel theory, methods and recent progress. Perspectives and directions for future research on invasive insects are discussed. The results provide new insights for the early warning, prevention, detection, monitoring, management, and control, of invasive insects.

Abstract:Tuta absoluta（Meyrick） is a devastating invasive pest originating from South America. It has spread rapidly to Europe, Africa, and Asia, and has invaded China in recent years, and now is a highly potential threat to the solanaceous crop industry in China. Due to its characteristics of leaf mining, fruit burrowing, short life history, high reproductivity, etc., its control effect relying on chemical pesticides is limited. Many theoretical studies and application explorations have been carried out for developing the biological control strategies for Tuta absoluta in the world, and a lot of biological control agents with high potential for usage have been screened. In this review, we summarized the research progress on the global biological control of Tuta absoluta, focusing on the parasitic and predatory natural enemy insects, the bio-control microbes, and the repellent plants and their chemical extracts. In the green control of Tuta absoluta in China, in-depth studies could be carried out on the introduction of biocontrol species suitable for the agricultural niche in China, the digging of local biocontrol resources, and the industrialization of these biocontrol organisms; meanwhile, the integrative utilization of these organisms could be promoted via the combined use of them and the ecological regulation of the agricultural landscape, so as to ensure the high-quality development of Chinese solanaceous crop industry.

Abstract:Rice planthoopers have been the most destructive pests for food security and the chemical pesticides used to control them are affecting ecological and food safety in China.Therefore,integrated approach for intensive rice production and sustainable control of rice planthoppers has been becoming of the most important task.The molecular mechanism for the pests adapting intensive rice ecosystem and ecological bases for integrating technology for intensive agriculture and sustainable pest management would be studied to improve understanding.6 sub-projects,including migration and temporal-special dynamics of rice planthopper populations;genetic bases of rice resistance to planthoppers and planthopper virulence;ecological and molecular mechanism of epidemic of rice virus diseases transmitted by planthoppers;ecological toxicology of pesticides on planthoppers and their natural enemy;data analysis for planthopper genome and techniques for identifying functional genes and regulating function and relevant mechanism of rice ecosystem on planthopper population development,will be further explored to provide theoretical and technical bases for establishing outbreak monitoring and warning systems for rice planthoppers and virus diseases,development of resistant varieties and program for sustainable management of these pests.

Abstract:Two new species, Mukaria creagra Zhao, Luo & Chen sp. nov. and Mukaria striola Zhao, Luo & Chen sp. nov. , of the bamboo-feeding leafhopper genus Mukaria Distant, 1908 are described and illustrated form Guizhou and Yunnan, China. Three species moved from Mukaria Distant, 1908 into Mukariella Viraktamath & Webb, 2019. A key for all known Chinese species of Mukaria and Mukariella is given.

Abstract:Because bamboo flowering has great influence on the environment and socio-economy,it's essential to predict it.The bamboo flowering brings changes in its physiological and biological components.This paper mainly summaried bamboo flowering effects on the organic matters,minerals,hormone,chlorophyll,photosynthesis and membrane permeability.It was concluded that the flowering had great effects on the biochemical components,such as hormone and chlorophyll and they could be used to predict bamboo flowering.The physiological and biochemical characteristrics of bamboo were closely related.Hyperspectral remote sensing,which has been used to predict yield and pest disease,could be applied in bamboo flowering prediction.Combined with biochemical components this may become a new direction for bamboo research.

Abstract:China's bamboo output is closely associated with its national economy; however, it is currently rapidly declining due to damage from the pests Anaka burmensis and Cicadella viridis . Identifying regions that are environmentally suitable for these pests is a critical step in their effective control. Therefore, in this study, we used a Maxent model to predict their current and future potential areas of distribution (2021–2040, 2041–2060, and 2061–2080) and explored changes over time using distribution data and related environmental variables. The model results demonstrates that the current potential areas of distribution of A. burmensis are predominantly concentrated in several provinces of southern and central China, such as Guizhou, Guangxi, and Hubei, whereas the current potential areas of distribution of C. viridis are primarily in many provinces across southern, central, and northeastern China. In the future, the potential distribution of A. burmensis will increase and move minimally, whereas the potential distribution of C. viridis will decrease and move considerably. The results of the present study provide vital information for predicting the spread and outbreaks of C. viridis and A. burmensis and provide a reference framework for developing management strategies to control these two pests, thereby minimizing economic loss in the bamboo industry.

Abstract:Five new species of the leafhopper genus Bhatia Distant, B. hastata Shang and Shen, B. digitata Shang and Shen, B. flabellata Shang and Shen, B. quadrispinosa Shang and Zhang, and B. unicornis Shang and Li, are described from China. Figures are provided for these species, Bhatia koreana (Kwon and Lee), a new record for China, and B. biconjugara Zhang and Zhang. A key to separate these species and B. satsuinensis Matsumura from China is given.
