Abstract:A surface layer with a depth-dependent nanocrystalline microstructure was formed on reduced activation ferrite-martensitic (RAFM) steel by means of surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT). Equiaxed nano-sized grains in the surface layer were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM, and the result indicated that the grain size decreased gradually with increasing deformation strain and strain rate. Compared with the size and number of carbides in the matrix, smaller and fewer carbides were detected in the SMAT layer, which indicated the refining and dissolving process of carbide during the drastic deformation in the SMAT process. Sub-grain boundaries (sub-GB) and high dense dislocation walls (DDWs) in ferrite were found in deformation layer, and dislocation accumulation, rearrangement and annihilation during the drastic deformation were discussed in detail. Both TEM images and XRD results demonstrate that the nanocrystalline layer has excellent thermal stability after annealing at 823K.

Abstract:Engineering nanostructures in metallic materials such as nanograins and nanotwins can promote plastic performance significantly. Nano/ultrafine-grained metals embedded in coarse grains called bimodal metals and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals have been proved to possess extensively improved yield strength whilst keeping good ductility. This paper will present an experimental study on nanostructured stainless steel prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with surface impacts of lower strain rate (10 s−1–103 s−1) and higher strain rate (104 s−1–105 s−1). Microstructure transition has been observed from the original γ-austenite coarse grains to α′-martensite nanograins with bimodal grain size distribution for lower strain rates to nanotwins in the ultrafine/coarse grained austenite phase for higher strain rates. Meanwhile, we will further address the mechanism-based plastic models to describe the yield strength, strain hardening and ductility in nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The proposed theoretical models can comprehensively describe the plastic deformation in these two kinds of nanostructured metals and excellent agreement is achieved between the numerical and experimental results. These models can be utilized to optimize the strength and ductility in nanostructured metals by controlling the size and distribution of nanostructures.

Abstract:This work investigated the effect of grain ultra-refinement on the microstructure, mechanical property, and corrosion behavior of low alloy steels. The ultrafine-grain steels were obtained by using advanced thermo-mechanical processes (ATP), and their microstructures, mechanical property, and corrosion behavior were characterized by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) electrochemical measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The morphology of the fracture surface and the microstructures of the failed tensile specimen were analyzed to investigate the failure mechanism. Grain refinement results in a significant increase in the grain boundary density, which leads to the enhanced strength and brittle fracture. The study found that the grain boundaries have a higher pitting susceptibility and crystallographic pitting has a susceptibility in order of {111} > {101} > {001}. Ultrafine grain with a high fraction of low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) impedes pitting corrosion.

Abstract:The strengthening effects of grain refinement and nano-sized coherent precipitation are effective strengthening mechanisms in the development of low-cost advanced high-strength steels. In the present work, low carbon dual phase steels with ultrafine grains and nanoscale copper rich precipitates were produced by a combination of warm deformation and isothermal aging processes. Then, the microstructure and plastic deformation behavior were explored using the EBSD technique and crystal plasticity simulations, and the precipitation mechanism of nanoscale Cu-rich particles was investigated by HRTEM, atom-probe tomography in combination with first-principles calculations. The results indicate that the formation and compositional evolution of the Cu-rich particles are associated with the mixing enthalpy of alloying elements and the attractive interaction between the solute atoms. Besides the precipitation hardening effect, grain refinement improve both strength and ductility of the steels significantly, while more severe deformation will result in the heterogeneous distribution of martensite, then intensify the plastic heterogeneities and early hardening of ferrite grains during tension deformation, thus give rise to a decrease in ductility.

Abstract:Effects of prior austenite deformation and non-metallic inclusions on the ferrite nucleation and grain refinement of two kinds of low-carbon steels have been studied. The ferrite nucleation on MnS and V(C,N) is observed. The combination of thermomechanical processes with adequate amounts of non-metallic inclusions formed in low-carbon steels could effectively refine the grain size and the microstructure. Ferrite nucleated on the single MnS or V(C,N) inclusions and complex MnS+V(C,N) inclusion. The proper addition of elements S and V could effectively promote the formation of ferrite and further refinement of ferrite grains.

Abstract:The medium carbon steel warm deformation was carried out in a Gleeble-3500 simulator, and the microstructure was observed on a scan electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscope (OM). The results show that the dynamic reversal transformation (DRT) of austenite occurred during the multipass deformation at a temperature of 675 °C. The austenite grain size is about 3.4 μm at the stain of 2.67. The thermodynamics was discussed based on the stress activation model. The critical stress of DRT is in the range of 265.94–294.28 MPa, which is related to the Schmit factor, without considering the distortion energy. Meanwhile, the submicron ferrite was obtained after the air cooling stage. The texture of the ultrafine ferrite possessed the characteristics of good, deep drawing properties.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of ferrite region rolling on the microstructure and properties of steel plate heat commercial (SPHC) steel produced by compact strip production (CSP) process was studied in detail. Comparing ferrite rolled sheet with austenite rolled sheet, it was found that the average ferrite grain size of low carbon steel sheet rolled in ferrite region increased from 10.6 to 27.6 µm and the dislocation density was slightly reduced from 1.79 × 10 11 to 8.9 × 10 10 cm −2 . The yield strength of ferrite rolled sheet is 92 MPa lower than that of austenite rolled sheet. The theoretical calculation and experimental results indicates that the coarsening of grains contributes to the 70% reduction of yield strength of ferrite rolled sheet, and the reduction of dislocation density and other strengthening factors account for about 30%. Texture analysis results by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) shows that the growth of {001} <110> and {112} <110> component in the texture of ferrite rolled sheet lead to the reduction of and Δ r .

Abstract:Isothermal heat-treatment was conducted to study the microstructures of intragranular ferrite nucleated on non-metallic inclusions in a low carbon steel. The dominant transformed products were grain boundary ferrite, intragranular polygonal ferrite, acicular ferrite and bainite in turn from high to low temperature (650–500°C). The favorite temperature range for the occurrence of largest amount of acicular ferrite was about 580–620°C in this study. The morphology of acicular ferrite and intragranular polygonal ferrite was also studied considering the axial ratio. Acicular ferrite and polygonal ferrite were measured with electron back scattering patterns to have different orientation relationship with austenite, Kurdjumov–Sachs (K–S) relationship of the former and possible random of the latter.

Abstract:In the present paper, the designed thermomechanical process was applied to prepare ferrite/bainite multiphase microstructures in Si-rich low-alloy steel with a carbon content of 0.33 wt.% (0.33C) and 0.21 wt.% (0.21C). The microstructures were analyzed by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and electron backscatter diffraction, and the mechanical properties (tensile and impact properties) were tested. The results showed that, on the premise of obtaining 15 vol.% ferrite in both steels, the ferrite grains in the 0.33C steel were polygonal with an average grain size of 2.2 μm, recrystallized more completely. However, the ferrite grains in the 0.21C steel were mainly long strip-shaped with a width of 2–4 μm, and the recrystallization degree was poor. In addition, upon increasing the austempering temperature, bainite ferrite laths were formed in the 0.33C steel, and the thickness was in the range of 81–123 nm. The morphology of bainite ferrite in the 0.21C steel gradually changed from lath to granular. Upon increasing the austempering temperature, the tensile strength and yield strength of both steels increased and the elongation decreased slightly. The impact energy of the two steels showed different trends upon increasing the austempering temperature, in which the impact energy of the 0.33C steel increased, while that of the 0.21C steel decreased. This is due to the difference size of the martensite-austenite constituents in the two steels.

The Fabrication of Ultrahigh-Strength Steel with a Nanolath Structure via Quenching-Partitioning-Tempering

Abstract:A novel low-alloy ultrahigh-strength steel featuring excellent mechanical properties and comprising a nanolath structure was fabricated in this work using a quenching-partitioning-tempering (Q-P-T) process. The Q-P-T process comprised direct quenching and an isothermal bainitic transformation for partitioning after thermo-mechanical control processing (online Q&P) and offline tempering (reheating and tempering). The ultrafine nanolath martensite/bainite mixed structure, combined with residual austenite in the form of a thin film between the nanolaths, was formed, thereby conferring excellent mechanical properties to the steel structures. After the Q-P-T process, the yield and tensile strengths of the steels reached 1450 MPa and 1726 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the Brinell hardness and elongation rate were 543 HB and 11.5%, respectively, with an average impact energy of 20 J at room temperature.

Abstract:The effects of magnetic field on nucleation barrier of the phase transformation from austenite to ferrite at different cooling rates in 42CrMo steel have been investigated. The microstructures of ferrite and pearlite aligned along the magnetic field direction (parallel to the hot-rolling direction) are obtained at a cooling rate of 10°C/min, resulting from the kinetic effects of the applied magnetic field during cooling and the microstructural influences of an inhomogeneous deformation occurring during the previous hot rolling. In this case, the formation of ferrite grains at higher temperatures is attributed mainly to the preferential nucleation at austenite boundaries. However, a fairly uniform microstructure of randomly distributed ferrite and pearlite is formed at a high cooling rate of 46°C/min in the magnetic field of 14T, as a result of both intergranular and intragranular nucleation at relatively low temperatures. Probing into this issue is helpful to gain a better understanding of kinetic influences of magnetic field on the phase transformation from austenite to ferrite.

Abstract:The interfacial microstructures of ex-service dissimilar metal weld (DMW) between austenitic stainless steel TP347H and low alloy ferritic steel G102 were investigated. A band of ultra-fine grains were found at the nickel-based weld metal/G102 steel interface. The ultra-fine grain band was characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), electron backscatter diffraction (ESBD), focused ion beam (FIB), transmission electron backscatter diffraction (T-EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation mechanism of ultra-fine grain band was proposed and the effects of it on service performance were discussed. The ultra-fine grains were ferrite without carbides, which were transformed from pre-existing martensite layer by carbon migration and localized recrystallization. This type of ultra-fine ferrite band triggered interfacial oxide notch by preferential oxidation of grain boundaries and increased the risk of interfacial cracking by microstructure degradation, which was a potential factor contributing to interfacial failure of DMW. The present work provided a new insight into the premature failure of such kind of DMWs.

Abstract:Based on the phase transformation delay of columnar grain structure in cast slabs, we propose a novel approach called metastable ferrite hot rolling, namely, a two‐stage heating at 900 °C and then at 1100 °C shortly and hot rolling, to avoid complete transformation and to retain original {100} oriented regions. The hot‐rolled sheets of low‐grade electrical steels undergo complete austenite‐ferrite phase transformation, resulting in fine equiaxed grains in the sheets. These fine initial grains eventually lead to a strong detrimental {111} texture in the final product after cold‐rolling and annealing process. This work, based on the phase transformation delay of columnar grain structure in cast slabs, proposes a novel approach called metastable ferrite hot rolling, namely, a two‐stage heating at 900 °C and then at 1100 °C shortly and hot rolling, to avoid complete transformation and to retain original {100} oriented regions. In addition, low‐temperature annealing is employed to increase grain sizes of hot‐rolled sheets thereby improving the final texture and magnetic properties after cold‐rolling and annealing. The results indicate that metastable ferritic columnar grains can be maintained during the two‐stage heating process at 1100 °C and primarily undergoes subgrain growth. The transformation from ferrite to austenite at 1100 °C is very slow. During the hot rolling with a high 86% reduction by two passes, the notable grain refinement is mainly caused by dynamic recrystallization rather than dynamic phase transformation as evidenced by the observation from the rolling plane.

Effect of Transformation Temperature on the Ferrite–Bainite Microstructures, Mechanical Properties and the Deformation Behavior in a Hot-Rolled Dual Phase Steel

Abstract:The ferrite–bainite microstructures and mechanical properties in a hot-rolled dual phase steel with different transformation temperatures were investigated in this paper. The deformation behavior of bainite and ferrite was analyzed by using in situ scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the ferrite and bainite can be refined and the volume fraction of bainite can be slightly increased by 5% by decreasing the ferrite transformation temperature from 690 to 635 °C and increasing the bainite transformation temperature from 400 to 450 °C. The strengthening mechanism was dislocation difference in polygonal and acicular ferrite and then the grain size difference of ferrite. The hole expansion ratio increased from 52.9 to 83.7% with the ferrite transformation temperature decreasing. The cracks or voids were smaller in size and also the number in steel with the lower ferrite transformation temperature after expanding. The microstructure separation along the boundary between bainite and ferrite and the slip band in the ferrite appeared at the non-uniform deformation stage. However, fewer appeared in the microstructure of steel with lower ferrite transformation temperature. Cooperative deformation of ferrite and bainite and finer microstructure in steel with lower ferrite transformation temperature were the mechanisms why the cracks could not easily nucleated and propagated, respectively. Abstract:A variety of structure-ultrafining processes of ultrahigh carbon steels were reviewed, which include hot and warm working (HWW) followed by isothermal warm working (IWW), HWW followed by divorced eutectoid transformation (DET), HWW followed by DET with associated deformation, thermal cycling and heat treatment without deformation. Otherwise, their mechanisms were described as well. The microduple structure obtained hereby consists of fine ferrite grains and uniformly-distributed spheroidized cementite (Fe_3C) particles. The influences of additional elements such as silicon, aluminum and chromium on the phase transformation temperature, the formation of net cement and graphite have been analyzed. Hence, the evaluation of these microstructure ultrafine processes has been made.

Abstract:This study explores the deformation behavior and microstructural evolution of a heterogeneous quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steel (Fe-0.19C-1.5Mn-0.5Si-1Al-0.03Nb) during dynamic deformation over a wide range of strain rates (0.01-500 s −1 ). With increasing strain rate, the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect diminishes, leading to a reduction in the volume fraction of strain-induced martensite. Nevertheless, strength and elongation concurrently increase. At higher strain rates, the heightened dislocation density results in intensified dislocation entanglement, hindering dislocation movement. Moreover, the increase in strain rate enhances the mechanical incompatibility between ferrite and martensite during the deformation process. Consequently, this results in the generation of more geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) near the ferrite grain boundaries adjacent to martensite. Additionally, the increase in strain rate facilitates the conversion of GNDs to low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs). The formation of LAGBs hinders dislocation movement, fosters the development of micro strain gradients, and to some extent, augments the strain hardening ability under high strain rates. These findings elucidate the intricate interplay among strain rate, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties in Q&P steel during dynamic deformation.

Abstract:The prior compressive deformation of austenite followed by air cooling was simulated by Gleeble-1500 machine on the grain boundary allotriomorphic ferrite/granular bainite (FGBA/Bg) dual phase steel. FGBA grains of less than 5μm and intragranular ferrite grains less than 3μm were obtained in the specimen with 30% compressive deformation at 780°C. The prior compressive deformation of austenite promotes the formation of granular structure instead of granular bainite, reduces the length of bainitic plates and results in a random distribution of ultrafine martensite–austenite (MA) islands. The results of Vickers hardness and Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact experiments show that the prior austenite deformation with air cooling is an effective way to improve both the strength and toughness of this dual phase steel.
