Abstract:The classical hydrates interaction model and the classical condensation model have been compared in the temperature range 153.15–363.15 K. Various expressions for the kinetic part of nucleation rate have been examined. In the present study the saturation vapor pressure values of sulfuric acid given by Ayers et al. are extrapolated to lower (stratospheric) temperatures taking into account the temperature dependence of the enthalpy of vaporization. In our model calculations we have compared the effect of three different expressions for saturation vapor pressures. The nucleation rate will differ by several orders of magnitude (depending on temperature, water and acid activity) when using different theories and/or saturation vapor pressures.

Abstract:Binary heterogeneous nucleation of water and sulphuric acid vapours has been investigated using the hydrates interaction model in atmospheric conditions. The effect of the contact angle as well as the effect of the size of the condensation nucleus are studied. The number of adsorbed molecules on the condensation nucleus is considered. Hydration is found to decrease the nucleation rate by several orders of magnitude depending on contact angle, temperature, water and acid activity.

Abstract:Binary homogeneous nucleation of water-succinic acid and water-glutaric acid systems have been investigated. The numerical approach was based on the classical nucleation theory. Usually, nucleation is discussed in terms of kinetics, but the thermodynamics involved is undoubtedly equally important. In this paper we studied the above mentioned binary systems giving a quantitative insight into the nucleation process and a detailed consideration of the thermodynamics involved. Both diacids in study are in solid state at room temperature. They behave in environment according to their liquid state properties because of the absence of crystalline lattice energies, and therefore their subcooled liquid state thermodynamics have to be considered. The lack of consistent thermodynamic data for pure organic components and their aqueous solutions represent a high source of uncertainty. However, the present simulations indicate that in atmospheric conditions these binary systems will not form new particles.

Abstract:We present measurements of binary homogeneous nucleation of sulfuric acid and water vapors at 298 K at two different relative humidities (38.2% and 52.3%), H2SO4 vapor concentrations ranging from about 1⋅1010 to 3⋅1010 molecules/cc. The experimental setup consisted of a turbulent mixing unit combined with a flow chamber where the nucleation took place. Particular attention was paid to the generation of sulfuric acid vapor. The measured nucleation rates vary between about 2 and 3000 cm−3 s−1. The results are compared with other measurements found in the literature. Our experimental rates are in agreement with predictions of the revised classical nucleation theory incorporating the hydration effect.

Abstract:This study presents a computational fluid dynamics modeling approach to investigate the nucleation in the water sulfuric acid system in a flow tube. On the basis of an existing experimental setup (Brus, D.; Hyvarinen, A.-P.; Viisanen, Y.; Kulmala, M.; Lihavainen, H. Atmos. Chem. Phys. 2010, 10,2631-2641), we first establish the effect of convection on the flow profile. We then proceed to simulate nucleation for relative humidities of 10, 30, and 50% and for sulfuric acid concentration between 10(9) to 3 x 10(10) cm(-3). We describe the nucleation zone in detail and determine how flow rate and relative humidity affect its characteristics. Experimental nucleation rates are compared to rates gained from classical binary and kinetic nucleation theory as well as cluster activation theory. For low RH values, kinetic theory yields the best agreement with experimental results while binary nucleation best reproduces the experimental nucleation behavior at 50% relative humidity. Particle growth is modeled for an example case at 50% relative humidity. The final simulated diameter is very close to the experimental result.

Abstract:New particle formation in the atmosphere still attracts both atmospheric scientists and aerosol researchers. New laminar flow chamber was recently built in Finnish Meteorological Institute to study particle formation of binary and ternary compounds such as sulfuric acid–water and sulfuric acid–ammonia–water, respectively. Abstract:Binary heterogeneous nucleation of water−n-propanol and water−sulfuric acid mixtures has been investigated. The classical thermodynamically consistent theory has been used. In the case of the water−n-propanol system, physically unrealistic predictions are seen. At water−gas-phase activities above 1, the theory predicts negative molecular occupation numbers of water in the critical clusters. In the case of water−sulfuric acid, however, the predictions are realistic. A series of quantitative experiments of heterogeneous nucleation of water−n-propanol on oxidized silver particles have been performed, and the results are contrasted with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Aerosols affect the climate directly and indirectly. A considerable part of these aerosols is produced by nucleation. Nucleation in the sulfuric acid-water-system in particular has recently gained revived interest (Brus et al., 2010; Sipilä et al., 2010) following the geo-engineering suggestions of Crutzen (2006) and Wingenter et al. (2007). However, experiments allow only limited insight into the nucleation process. We simulate nucleation experiments (Brus et al., 2010) with the computational fluid dynamics code Fluent in order to better understand the experimental setup and the nucleation process.

Abstract:The formation of new H2SO4 particles in stratospheric conditions has been investigated using classical nucleation theories. The classical hydrate interaction model and a recently derived equation for the saturation vapour pressure of sulphuric acid have been used in the numerical simulations. The present study is compared with earlier ones that ignore the effect of hydrate interaction. The nucleation rates given by the hydrate interaction model are some orders of magnitude smaller than those given by the classical condensation model. The amount of hydrates in the stratosphere is found to be considerable in some situations. Also, the limitations of classical nucleation models are discussed.

Abstract:The model for the heterogeneous nucleation on aerosol particles with a non-uniform surface introduced by Gorbunov and Kakutkina has been extended to binary systems, and the results of this model have been compared with the results of the uniform surface model. Binary heterogeneous nucleation of water-sulphuric acid and water-nitric acid vapours have been investigated. The uniform surface model is found to underestimate the nucleation rate with a few orders of magnitude compared to the model for non-uniform surfaces.

Abstract:In this study we introduce a new flow tube suitable for binary and ternary homogeneous nucleation studies. The production of sulfuric acid and water vapor mixture, the experimental setup and the method of sulfuric acid concentration determination are discussed in detail. Wall losses were estimated from the measured sulfuric acid concentration profiles along the flow tube and compared to a theoretical prediction. In this investigation the experimental evidence of new particle formation was observed at a concentration of 109 molecules cm−3 of sulfuric acid and the nucleation rates measured at three relative humidities (RH) 10, 30 and 50%, cover six orders of magnitude, from 10−3 to 103 particles cm−3. Particle free air was used as a carrier gas. Our initial results are compared to the theoretical prediction of binary homogeneous nucleation, to results obtained by other investigators, and to atmospheric nucleation.

Abstract:The formation of sulfuric acid-water hydrates in the vapor phase and nucleation rates of sulfuric acid-water clusters are investigated. The result of ab initio calculations and experimental data related to hydrates are utilized to improve the description of sulfuric acid-water hydration and nucleation in atmospheric conditions. The nucleation rates are obtained using the most rigorous nucleation kinetics and the thermodynamically consistent version of the classical nucleation model. The improvements increase the predicted nucleation rates compared to previous models. The predicted nucleation rates are compared with experimental ones, and they are in most cases within experimental errors. Some experimental evidence suggests that the present model gives a more realistic dependence of nucleation rate on relative humidity and sulfuric acid concentration than the earlier versions of the theory. Abstract:The formation of aerosol particles from the hydrogen iodide-water vapour system by homogeneous binary nucleation has been studied. Numerical simulations based on the standard classical nucleation theory and the revised classical nucleation theory are performed and they show that significant nucleation occurs in certain conditions and the nucleation rate depends drastically on gas phase activities. The lack of relevant experimental input data has been the most important source of uncertainty. The nucleation was also simulated in ACE (Advanced Containment Experiments) test conditions, where HI gas is mixed with pre-existing particles (CsOH, MnO) and steam/air atmosphere in an 852 m3 vessel.

Abstract:The kinetics of binary nucleation is investigated and an exact method to evaluate the nucleation rate is developed. The exact method accounts for all flows to the stable clusters, and thus the nucleation rate is obtained independently of determining the location of the saddle point in the Gibbs free energy surface. The exact method is based on determination of cluster concentrations, which can be obtained after solving a set of linear equations. The values of the nucleation rate and the direction of flow at the saddle point are calculated for water–sulphuric acid and water–ammonia systems. The results are compared to the results obtained by Stauffer’s saddle point integration method for binary nucleation kinetics. The saddle point integration method is found to give a reasonably accurate estimation of nucleation rate in the water–sulphuric acid system. However, in the water–ammonia system the difference is found to be as high as three orders of magnitude.

Abstract:In this study the homogeneous nucleation rates in the system of sulfuric acid and water were measured by using a flow tube technique. The goal was to directly compare particle formation rates obtained from atmospheric measurements with nucleation rates of freshly nucleated particles measured with particle size magnifier (PSM) which has detection efficiency of unity for particles having mobility diameter of 1.5 nm. The gas phase sulfuric acid concentration in this study was measured with the chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS), commonly used in field measurements. The wall losses of sulfuric acid were estimated from measured concentration profiles along the flow tube. The initial concentrations of sulfuric acid estimated from loss measurements ranged from 108 to 3 × 109 molecules cm−3. The nucleation rates obtained in this study cover about three orders of magnitude from 10−1 to 102 cm−3 s−1 for commercial ultrafine condensation particle counter (UCPC) TSI model 3025A and from 101 to 104 cm−3 s−1 for PSM. The nucleation rates and the slopes (dlnJ/dln [H2SO4]) show satisfactory agreement when compared to empirical kinetic and activation models and the latest atmospheric nucleation data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental work providing temperature dependent nucleation rate measurements using a high efficiency particle counter with a cut-off-size of 1.5 nm together with direct measurements of gas phase sulfuric acid concentration.

Abstract:We present a data set of binary nucleation of sulfuric acid and water, measured in the CLOUD chamber at CERN during the CLOUD3 and CLOUD5 campaigns. Four parameters have been varied to cover neutral and ion-induced binary nucleation processes: Sulfuric acid concentration (1e5 to 1e8 molecules per cm(-3)), relative humidity (10% to 80%), temperature (208-293K) and ion concentration (0-4000 ions per cm(-3)). In addition, classical nucleation theory implemented with hydrates and ion induced nucleation is compared with the data set. Our model and data are also compared with nucleation rates measured at Puy de Dome in the tropopause.

Abstract:Abstract. Sulphuric acid is known to be a key component for atmospheric nucleation. Precise determination of sulphuric acid concentration is crucial factor for prediction of nucleation rates and subsequent growth. In our study, we have noticed a substantial discrepancy between sulphuric acid monomer and total sulphate concentrations measured from the same source of sulphuric acid vapour. The discrepancy of about one to two orders of magnitude was found with similar formation rates. The reason for this difference is not yet clear and it can have great impact on predicting atmospheric nucleation rates as well as growth rates. To investigate this discrepancy and its effect on nucleation, a method of thermally controlled saturator filled with pure sulphuric acid (~97%) for production of sulphuric acid vapour is introduced and tested. Sulphuric acid-water nucleation experiment was done using a laminar flow tube. Two independent methods of mass spectrometry and online ion chromatography were used for detecting sulphuric acid concentrations. The results are compared to our previous results, where a method of evaporating weak sulphuric acid-water solution droplets in a furnace was used to produce sulphuric acid vapour (Brus et al., 2010, 2011). Measured sulphuric acid concentrations are compared to theoretical prediction calculated using vapour pressure and simple mixing law. The calculated prediction of sulphuric acid concentrations agrees very well with the measured values when total sulphate is considered. Sulphuric acid monomer concentration was found to be about two orders of magnitude lower than the prediction, but with similar temperature dependency as the prediction and the results obtained with ion chromatograph method. Formation rates agree well when compared to our previous results with both sulphuric acid detection and sulphuric acid production methods separately.
Effect of Ammonium Bisulphate Formation on Atmospheric Water-Sulphuric Acid-Ammonia Nucleation

Abstract:The effect of formation of stable ammonium bisulphate clusters on the ternary water-sulphuric acid-ammonia nucleation was investigated by means of the classical thermodynamics. The performed calculations show that most of the sulphuric acid in the atmosphere is likely to be bound to stable ammonium bisulphate clusters. Consequently the nucleation rates calculated with the new model are orders, sometimes even tens of orders, of magnitude lower than the rates produced by the previous ternary model which neglected the formation of these clusters. The new nucleation rates compare favourably with the available experimental results, unlike the old ones, which are far too high. In contrast to the old ternary model, the revised model does not predict significant nucleation rates that would explain new particle formation events every time they are observed, and we have to look for other nucleation mechanisms like multi-component nucleation involving organics or ion induced nucleation to understand atmospheric new particle formation.

Abstract:We derive a version of Classical Nucleation Theory normalized by quantum chemical results on sulfuric acid-water hydration to describe neutral and ion-induced particle formation in the binary sulfuric acid-water system. The theory is extended to treat the kinetic regime where the nucleation free energy barrier vanishes at high sulfuric acid concentrations or low temperatures. In the kinetic regime particle formation rates become proportional to sulfuric acid concentration to second power in the neutral system or first power in the ion-induced system. We derive simple general expressions for the prefactors in kinetic-type and activation-type particle formation calculations applicable also to more complex systems stabilized by other species. The theory predicts that the binary water-sulfuric acid system can produce strong new particle formation in the free troposphere both through barrier crossing and through kinetic pathways. At cold stratospheric and upper free tropospheric temperatures neutral formation dominates the binary particle formation rates. At midtropospheric temperatures the ion-induced pathway becomes the dominant mechanism. However, even the ion-induced binary mechanism does not produce significant particle formation in warm boundary layer conditions, as it requires temperatures below 0 degrees C to take place at atmospheric concentrations. The theory successfully reproduces the characteristics of measured charged and neutral binary particle formation in CERN CLOUD3 and CLOUD5 experiments, as discussed in a companion paper.
