Abstract:Aseries of questionnaire survey on condition of winter heating of residential building and field measure of typical cases were launched in Hangzhou. The characteristics of winter energy utilization in Hangzhou were found out through analyzed the survey data. In addition to air conditioning other heating devices are also important in Hangzhou which is a typical city in hot summer and cold winter zone. Moreover as high as 98%dwelling houses have air-conditions but in the winter the number of dwellinghouse did not open air-conditioning account for about 1/3-1/2. Combined with the analysis of the measured data of typical cases can concluded that winter air conditioning use rate and time lengthper day are not high. It also shows that in the hot summer and cold winter area air conditioning is more important for summer cooling.

Abstract:Hot summer and cold winter zone is a typical climate region in China with high temperatures and stuffiness in summer and low temperature and moisture in winter. The existing buildings bear of both poor thermal performance of building envelope and poor indoor thermal environment. With the development of social economy, increasing demand towards building indoor thermal environment is much more urgent than before, and hence energy consumption has rapidly risen. Energy efficiency retrofit with low cost has become a priority in this region. Universities and colleges are one of the typical energy consumers in this region, which are insufficient in research. Over all the campus buildings, research building occupies a large part in total campus energy use, and hence becomes the main retrofit objects. Research buildings have complicated functions of offices, scientific research and laboratories, and space heating and cooling behaviors have their own characteristics, which have the large effect on space heating and cooling use. However, there is little knowledge about adaptive thermal comfort and corresponding heating and conditioning energy-use behaviors. In view of this, in this paper, a typical research building located in Hangzhou was chosen and the measurements on indoor thermal environment heating and cooling behaviors, fenestration and energy consumption were carried out during July 2016 to October 2017. By the analysis on field investigation, delivered questionnaires and measured data, the typical space heating and cooling behaviors, fenestration and thermal environment are analyzed. On this base, energy efficiency optimization strategies in terms of building envelope thermal performance, sun shading, and adaptive space heating and cooling behavior are explored by the simulation. The study provides the technic support for energy saving retrofitting of campus buildings in this region.

Abstract:Solar powered drying is an environment-friendly technique utilized to dry grain. A novel in-store drying system composed of Flat-plate air collectors, a heat pump, fans, air ducts, and grain stirrer is proposed to make full use of solar energy and to reduce the consumption of electricity. A demonstration system was built and tested in Kunming, China. The experimental data was compared with the results derived from a mathematical simulation. The experimental and simulated data demonstrate that the solar assisted heat pump drying system improved the performance of the in-store drying process. An average temperature rise of 8.9 degrees C for the granary inlet air was achieved. The drying rate was increased and the uniformity of grain moisture content was improved. In addition, the grain was maintained in good quality and the level of power consumption was reduced. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Examination and Optimization of Classroom Indoor Environments in China’s Hot Summer and Cold Winter Regions

Abstract:The school's indoor environment significantly affects students' health and learning performance. Although related studies have been carried out in many regions, only a few have examined indoor classroom environments and proposed the energy-saving optimization of heating and ventilation in winter in China's hot summer and cold winter areas. This study aims to comprehensively investigate classroom indoor environmental quality in China's hot summer and cold winter areas, and propose targeted optimization strategies. It first examined the indoor environment, including indoor air, acoustic, visual, and thermal quality, of two typical middle schools. The indoor CO2 concentration in winter was found to be unsatisfactory. Subsequently, how the indoor layout, outdoor wind and occupancy density influence indoor CO2 concentration was examined through simulation, which indicated that high occupancy density is the main cause. Finally, this study proposed several ventilation optimization strategies and performed an energy analysis to maintain sufficient air quality and a comfortable thermal environment in high-density classrooms. The results show that compared with the intermittent mode, the fixed ventilation and heating mode could maintain a more comfortable indoor environment and achieve a 30% energy saving. A reference for the improvement of classroom indoor environment in hot summer and cold winter areas was provided.

Abstract:As solar space heating is one of the most efficient ways to reduce fossil energy consumption, a hybrid solar air heating system for building space heating is proposed in this paper. The system includes passive and active dual function solar collectors. It was tested on a solar demonstration building, which was located on USTC (University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei China) campus. Different operation strategies of the hybrid solar air heating system were tested experimentally in order to evaluate heating effect of the system. The results showed that the strategy of passive solar heating for southern room space heating and active solar heating for northern room was a better operation strategy, by which the average indoor temperature of both southern and northern rooms reached 17.0 degrees C during the experiment. Based on the experimental results and software of TRNSYS simulation, the solar fractions of the system during the heating season in Hefei and Nyingchi were predicted with values of 39.5% and 69.0%, respectively. Above all, it presented an efficient design philosophy for building to utilize solar energy for space heating. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In building energy consumption, the proportion of heating in energy consumption is very large. From the point of view of energy saving and thermal comfort, radiant floor heating system needs to be popularized and applied. This study takes the ground source heat pump and radiant floor heating system of an energy-saving demonstration building as the experimental plat-form. The indoor temperature of the operating system is obtained by the instrument at different heights. Indoor temperature fluctuation and distribution and the heating characteristics of the system can be obtained. Results show that the indoor temperature of the heating system meets human thermal comfort, and the indoor temperature of room which receives the solar radiation can still be maintained more than 18 °C in work time within two days when the sys-tem is closed. Moreover, valley electric operation and storage tank system operation mode makes the ground source heat pump and radiant floor heating system more efficient. The sys-tem is worth widely being used.

Abstract:Indoor dehumidification is usually achieved by mechanical cooling resulting in significant consumption of high-grade energy resources such as electricity. Conventional rotary dehumidification systems also require the use of high-grade energy to heat the desiccant and regenerate it. Utilization of renewable energy for indoor dehumidification is highly of concern. Ventilated roof desiccant bed system is a novel dehumidification method which can regenerate itself automatically with low-grade energy usage by taking advantage of solar energy and natural ventilation directly. Using renewable energy as an alternative, it can reduce the building energy consumption, which is beneficial to achieve nearly zero energy building (nZEB) target. This study establishes the heat and moisture transfer model of the ventilated roof desiccant bed while the moisture transfer model is validated by using the reference data. The flow-field characteristics in the airflow channels are numerically analyzed, and the regeneration process of the desiccant bed in a typical day is also simulated. Results show that both the temperature and air velocity in the channel are increasing from the inlet to the outlet. The air velocity increment can reach 0.5 m/s, and the temperature can rise about 6 °C under the same boundaries. On a typical day, the regeneration process of the ventilated roof desiccant bed lasts for approximately 3 h, and 80 g of water is desorped per unit. It means that about 18 units are sufficient to remove the moisture produced in 8 h by a man. The research results can provide data reference for the design of the system, and thus facilitates the realization of engineering application.

Abstract:Solid adsorption desiccant system has been paid more and more attentions nowadays, not only because it is friendly to the environment, but also because it can utilize low grade energy sources such as solar energy, geothermal energy or waste heat. How to improve the performance of heat and mass transfer is a key factor for the application of this kind of system.In this paper, a novel dehumidification device was designed and an experimental investigation on the adsorption and desorption operations were studied. Aluminum clad copper tube with external longitudinal fins were assembled into adsorption bed, which were covered by silica gel granules as desiccant. 13 degrees C cold water was used for refrigerating and improving adsorption effect, while 65 degrees C hot water was used as the heat source for silica gel regeneration.The experimental and calculation results show that the novel system can work effectively driven by low temperature source and the coefficient of performance (COP) is high.

Abstract:Passive design has widely been identified as one of the most economical and effective strategies for reducing energy demand.This research is based on the physical surveillance, and has adopted physical environment fieldwork test and data analysis methods to evaluate the effectiveness of passive space design strategies and their influence on the main body spaces.The project case is a net-zero house that relies completely on solar energy to supply its energy consumption.Its passive design strategy embody sunspace at the building south façade.The experiment tested several physical parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, CO2 concentration, and PMV index in winter, summer and trans-seasons to evaluate its effectiveness on thermal and ventilation environment.The research results yielded quantified data regarding the impact levels of the three passive spaces, and allowed researchers to summarize their advantages and disadvantages and provide some possible improvements.
Field Study on Independent Dehumidification Air-Conditioning System - I: Performance of Liquid Desiccant Dehumidification System

Abstract:This paper presents the field study results of a novel hot water-powered liquid desiccant dehumidification system, which has been installed in a demonstration building in Beijing, China, aspart of an independent dehumidification air-conditioning system. The hot water is supplied by the urban heating network, which is powered by a heat and power cogeneration (CHP) plant. The working principles of the system, both in summer and in winter are illustrated in detail. The performance of the system has been measured, showing that the average energy efficiency of the outdoor air processor is 1.83, the average regeneration efficiency 0.82, and the average energy efficiency of the entire liquid desiccant dehumidification system 1.50, which is competitive compared to a conventional electrical refrigeration system. The outdoor processors work in winter as total heat recovery units with efficiency being around 0.5.

Abstract:Buildings composited with thermoelectric cooling and heating systems use solar energy to cool rooms in summer and heat rooms in winter via thermoelectric devices and photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) dual function modules. In summer, the thermoelectric device works as a Peltier cooler when electrical power supplied by PV/T modules is applied on it. The cold side absorbs heat from indoor to decrease the temperature of the room. In the meanwhile, the thermal energy gained both from the hot side and PV/T system is collected to heat domestic water by heat pipes. In winter, the voltage applied on thermoelectric device is reversed with PV/T modules being power and heat source simultaneously to thermoelectric device and then thermoelectric device could release heat to increase the temperature of the room. The experiments has been done in a model room whose volume is 0.125m3, in summer condition, using solar panel whose area is 0.5m2. The minimum temperature 17°C is achieved, with COP of the thermoelectric device higher than 0.45. The temperature of water in the storage tank with a volume of 18.5L has risen about 9°C. The thermal efficiency of the system is 12.06%. This simple and environmentally friendly can reduce cooling and heating load in room.

Abstract:For the sake of improving the utilization of solar energy in hot summer and cold winter areas of China, an innovative system combined liquid dehumidification with absorption refrigeration driven by solar energy is proposed in this paper. Solar energy is applied to three subsystems in a cascade utilization approach. Energy, exergy, and dehumidification performances of the system in three typical seasons of hot summer and cold winter areas in China are analyzed and compared. The key parameters including solar radiation intensity, ambient temperature, segment temperature and air relative humidity are investigated to obtain the optimization design of the proposed system. The objective indicators, including dehumidification coefficient of performance, refrigeration coefficient of performance, exergy efficiency, moisture removal rate, humidity efficiency, cooling capacity and heating capacity are discussed, respectively. The results show that, as the ambient temperature and solar radiation intensity increase, the dehumidification coefficient of performance ( COPD ) declines but the refrigeration coefficient of performance ( COPR ) rises. The COPD in rainy season is increased by 33.66 % and 50.15 % respectively, compared with that in cooling season and heating season. But the COPR in cooling season is 35.32 % higher than that in rainy season. The minimum of COPD reaches 1.31 at 12 noon. The maximum of COPR in the proposed system is 0.95. The exergy efficiency of the proposed system is improved by combining the liquid dehumidification subsystem and absorption refrigeration subsystem, with the maximum reaching 16.64 %. The proposed system shows better dehumidification performance in rainy season, and the maximum moisture removal rate and humidity efficiency in the proposed system are 27.98 g/kg and 0.83. The proposed system is also used for cooling and heating, with the highest cooling capacity and heating capacity achieving 217.31 kW and 36.58 kW, respectively. The obtained results state that the proposed system has excellent performance for dehumidification, cooling, and heating in hot summer and cold winter areas of China.

Abstract:Due to sustainable development, solar energy has drawn much attention and been widely applied in buildings. However, the application of solar energy is limited because of its instability, intermittency and low energy density in winter. In order to use low density and instable solar energy source for heating and improve the utilization efficiency of solar energy, a solar phase change thermal storage (SPCTS) heating system using a radiant-capillary-terminal (RCT) to effectively match the low temperature hot water, a phase change thermal storage (PCTS) to store and continuously utilize the solar energy, and an air source heat pump (ASHP) as an alternate energy, was proposed and set up in this research. Series of experiments were conducted to obtain the relation between the solar radiation utilization rate and the heating supply temperatures, and to evaluate the performance of the RCT module and the indoor thermal environment of the system for its practical application in a residential building in the north-western City of Xi’an, China. The results show that energy saving of the solar heating system can be significantly improved by reducing the supplied water temperature, and the supplied water temperature of the RCT would be no more than 35°C. The capillary radiation heating can adopt a lower water temperature and create a good thermal comfort environment as well. These results may lead to the development of designing and distributing the solar energy for building heating during winter.

Abstract:In China, a large amount of the total energy consumption is made up of building energy, particularly in humid regions. The conventional vapor compression refrigeration systems cannot effectively control the indoor humid and thermal environment. Therefore, this article proposes a solar-powered desiccant wheel and ground-source heat pump (SDW-GSHP) air conditioning system. The energy consumption of the system is mainly from sustainable sources of solar and geothermal energy, showcasing excellent energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. The desiccant wheel (DW) processes latent heat loads, and the GSHP processes the sensible heat load. The regeneration air of the DW is heated by a solar collector. The operational performance of the system was simulated by using TRNSYS during the typical summer week (15 July to 22 July) in Qingdao. The simulation results indicated that indoor temperature was maintained within 25.8–26.2 °C and the relative humidity was maintained in the range of 57–61%. The COP of the SDW-GSHP air conditioning system was 42.1% higher than that of the DW air conditioning system with electric heating regeneration, and electricity saved 43.7%.

Abstract:To achieve passive dehumidification and energy-saving effects in residential buildings, we developed a passive dehumidification and solar collection (PDSC) system combined with energy recovery ventilation (ERV). The PDSC system is based on the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and uses the thermodynamic energy difference between indoor and outdoor environments as the driving force for moisture transfer. ERV reduce summer cooling loads by exchanging moisture and heat between the exhaust and supply air during ventilation. Recently, high refrigerant evaporation temperatures have been established for high-efficiency air-conditioners to save energy, resulting in insufficient dehumidification. This study provides a comprehensive report on the dehumidification and energy efficiency of an integrated passive dehumidification and solar collection system combined with an energy recovery ventilation (PSE) system considering the condensing dehumidification of air conditioners. We coupled dynamic indoor environment simulation software with a heat pump characterization model that can predict the condensed water content of the heat pump evaporator. A PSE system was simulated using this detailed coupling method, and the simulated and measured data were consistent. Four systems were introduced for the simulation comparison with the PSE model: two exhaust-only ventilation systems, a PDSC-only system, and an ERV-only system. All the system models were built using the coupling method. Three simulation analyses were performed using these systems under various airflow rates and in a set temperature range of 26–28 °C. The simulation results showed that the PSE system outperformed the other systems in terms of dehumidification and had the lowest latent heat load. In addition, when air conditioning had a low dehumidification effect (at high airflow or high set temperatures), the dehumidification effect of the PSE system reduced the average indoor relative humidity by less than 65% and the latent heat load by 46.5–89.0%.

The Thermal Behavior of a Dual-Function Solar Collector Integrated with Building: An Experimental and Numerical Study on the Air Heating Mode

Abstract:This paper presented a novel solar collector that can work in air or water heating mode depending on the seasonal requirement. The dual-function solar collector (DFSC) integrated with a building as well as a reference building without the DFSC were built to test thermal behavior in passive air heating mode during winter. The buildings were equipped with an apparatus to control the room temperature. During the testing procedure, experimental study on the DFSC system was carried out under two conditions, where the indoor temperature was controlled and non-controlled. The results showed that the average temperature of the test room was about 3.43 degrees C higher than that of the reference room under the non-controlled condition. When the room temperature was controlled at 18 degrees C, the power consumptions of the test room and reference room were 4.322 kWh and 7.796 kWh, respectively. Consequently, the corresponding daily power consumption saved could reach up to around 3.5 kWh. Moreover, a dynamic numerical model on the DFSC along with the building was developed taking the fin effect of the Cu-tubes into account. The numerical results are found to be well consistent with the measured data. A parametric study on with/without Cu-tubes and depth of the air channel was carried out. It is found that the existing Cu-tubes functioning as water heating can enhance the air heating efficiency when the depth of air channel is of a suitable size.
