Abstract:A campus grid is developed and deployed to integrate high performance computing resources in Zhejiang University.The architecture is based on a hierarchical combination of two grid middleware products,Globus Toolkit and Sun Grid Engine,in order to make use of their advantages.The campus grid is applied for scientific computation,bioinformatics,computational fluid dynamics,etc.Some test cases using Message Passing Interface(MPI) show that the campus grid can provide powerful and stable computing cycles.The campus grid also provides two collaborative visualization services,the local rendering and the server rendering,which can be customized by the user.Finally,the collaborative visualization service facilitates users to research and analyze cooperatively.

Abstract:In order to integrate the distributed computing resources in Zhejiang University (ZJU), a campus grid is constructed by using the hierarchical combination of middleware, Globus Toolkit and Sun Grid Engine. As one realization of the computational grid, the foundation of the campus grid provides a large amount of scientific computation cycles. Furthermore, our grid system adopts two different approaches, Java 3D and Para View, to manipulate a collaborative visualization of the computed data respectively. Therefore the users can choose the most appropriate method according to their requirements. Three cases are tested on the campus grid via portal access. The results demonstrate that the ZJU Campus Grid provides powerful computation cycles and an efficient collaborative visualization service.

Abstract:Grid computing technology is a focused field in high performance computing. This paper describes an engineering computation oriented visual grid framework VGrid, which is capable to bridge the gap between currently deployed grid services and the computational applications. Based on the Globus toolkit, and coupled with a client component, a services pool and a server component, VGrid visually performs resource discovery, task schedule, and result processing. VGrid improves the efficiency of utilization of resources by introducing a logical resource concept. VGrid applications of numerical simulations in engineering sciences are demonstrated.

Abstract:Grid computing is becoming a new computing infrastructure for large-scale scientific computation and cooperative work. The Globus toolkit is the most popular grid environment and de facto grid standard, and it has adopted OGSA architecture to provide applications with grid service level. This study focuses on the requirement for scientists in engineering computation field and narrows the gap between grid service and the engineering community. The engineering computation architecture supplies the users with a visual application development and deployment environment for engineering computation. The whole is characterized by grid service. At the same time, QoS driven user-centric scheduling, community-based efficient authorization and flexible task management are designed and implemented.

Abstract:Computational Grids are motivated by the desire to provide transparent access to resources among many organizations to solve large scale scientific and engineering problems. In grids, the resource management systems provide users consistent, pervasive, inexpensive and secure access to high-end computing capabilities. Therefore, grid computing is a promising resort to integrate massive computing powers into online virtual environment so that the application will benefit from grid computing as it enables collaboration and the use of distributed computing resources. In this paper, we use a grid computing platform consisting of several heterogeneous nodes with different OS and hardware configurations. We also proposed a large scale virtual environment for the designers to aircraft design online based on this grid computing platform.

Abstract:In this paper, we present our work on the integration of existing engineering applications using Grid Services. We address a visual grid framework that provides an integrated development environment for engineering computation applications. Furthermore, we demonstrate bow such services can interact with each other. These interactions enable a level of integration that assists the scientific application architect in leveraging applications running in heterogeneous runtime environments. Our framework is implemented by using the existing infrastructures and middleware, the Globus Toolkit. We test our framework for computation solid mechanics applications that require large data transferring, interactive steering, using of multiple platforms, visualization, and access via a portal with graphic interface.

Abstract:The distributed instruments and equipments sharing via network can improve accessibility and utilization remarkably. Taking into consideration of various problems to realize equipment resources sharing on network, a multi-layer equipment grid architecture based on the idea of simulation and modeling was put forward. The design principles and basic framework were discussed. Its implementation technologies for equipment grid were given, such as network layer, protocol layer, resource encapsulation layer, middleware layer, simulation and modeling layer, application layer, grid portal, and security mechanism, etc. The core approach was to build simulation model for shared equipments as their virtual images, which were used to access, manage and schedule remote resources to solve the problem of different types equipments sharing via network. Its efficiency and feasibility were proved with good performance in the one of '211 Project'-National University Equipment and Resource Sharing System.

Abstract:This paper proposes a computational grid platform for solving the large-scale power system applications. The platform is based on Globus Toolkit middleware and Grid Way meta-scheduler. It can enable large-scale sharing of computational resources across institutional boundary. This paper first discusses the architecture and each component of the platform, and then the test bed is described. Finally, the test results of probabilistic load flow (PLF) by Monte-Carlo simulation are presented. The test results show that the computational Grid system can provide comparable performance.

Abstract:In order to solve the issues of resource loading imbalance and management mode inconsistency, the job scheduling system for campus grid is presented. This paper analyses the concept and structure of the grid, designs the hierarchical structure of the job scheduling system for campus grid, and summarizes the goal of the job scheduling system. Then the job service function, job scheduling model, and job scheduling policy are researched, and the job scheduling system for campus grid is implemented. As a result, the resources of campus grid can be shared and balanced sufficiently and equally.

Abstract:This paper describes the design and implementation of CampusWare, a lightweight grid middleware for the compute-intensive applications in campus environment. Though there are many grid middlewares available, they are unnecessarily complex for use in the campus environment where the main applications are compute-intensive, and the main requirements are the convenience and efficiency in clusters management and job submissions. To deal with the problem, CampusWare proposes a "fast job" concept and provides a two-layer middleware architecture as well as a three-layer user account hierarchy. Compared with the existing grid middlewares, its deployment, configuration and usage are all simplified, which makes it easy-to-use, efficient and portable.

Abstract:This paper describes a Service-bAsed Grid project for Engineering computation, named SAGE. Based on the Globus toolkit, a grid-service-based architecture oriented to engineering computation is presented. To give grid users good usability, task definition and resource discovery are visually conducted. Whilst, a Quality of Service (QoS) driven user-centric scheduling strategy is proposed, two scheduling methods and steering-enabled visual interfaces are applied for different types of grid users. Result processing can be visualized in the aid of a PC-cluster and a stereopticon. The practices suggest that these mechanisms improve the convenience and QoS.

Abstract:In the grid computing environment, resources are distributed, heterogeneous, dynamical and autonomous, so the job scheduling is one of the challenging task. The campus computing grid adaptive scheduling system is presented to balance the load and manage resources uniformly. The adaptive scheduling system for the grid job is researched in detail, and the model of the dynamic load information with the function of dynamic load balancing is designed, and the adaptive algorithm is implemented. The load balancing and the uniform resources management are implemented.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the grid technology for distributed simulation by a sample of a developed system for distributed simulation and integrated design to aircraft engine. It provides a flexible environment for defining, modifying and simulating the component-based aero gas turbine models, and enables users to customize and extend the framework in augmenting new functionality or adapting simulation behavior as required. In this system, model components may be distributed across heterogeneous computing architectures and operating systems where object oriented modeling and component pre-construction are employed. Both simulation entity models and network reside in model library. We use GLOBUS3.0 and VEGA grid tools infrastructure as the framework for this system. In addition, the proposed environment is partially independent of aero engine simulation implementation and may be easily incorporated into other simulation implementation. At last a distributed gas turbine engine model is developed and simulated to illustrate the use of the frameworks.

Abstract:With the rapid development of science and technology in the information era, science & engineering computation has introduced to the field of high performance computing higher and more demands, namely, super computation capabilities, large quantity of data, over long period of calculation course, etc. The fast growth of grid technologies brings about possibility of resolving the above-mentioned challenges and demands. The paper based on grid technologies, puts forward a solution model to science & engineering computing. The solution addresses key issues of science & engineering computation. Meanwhile, utilizing Globus Toolkit(Release 2.2), one of the major implementations of grid computing, together with other techniques, as middleware, we build a computational grid across LANs in Peking University campus network. Some samples of science & engineering computing running on this grid produce satisfactory results. Application experiences demonstrate its feasibility and practical utility.
