Abstract:This study presents a numerical investigation of the thermal effect of an intrusive sill on organic-rich host rocks based on three types of different heat conduction models. The Bellata-1well in the northen Gunnedah Basin(Australia) is selected as an example. Results indicate: 1) the contact temperature(Tc) based on the model of instantaneous intrusion with pore-water evaporization is highest among three types of heat conduction models, whereas Tc computed by the model of finite-time intrusion without pore-water evaporization is lowest;2) the extension at which magma intrusion can influence the host rocks predicted by the heat conduction model of instantaneous intrusion without the consideration of pore-water evaporization is wider than that by the heat conduction model of finite-time intrusion. This shows that the degree and extension of the thermal influence of the instantaneous intrusion mechanism of magma on the adjacent host rocks can be much more significant than evaporization of pore water;3) the heat conduction model of instantaneous intrusion without pore-water evaporization most closely matches with the vitrinite-reflectance geothermometer. This demonstrates that magma intruded into the strata instantaneously and that the evaporization and escape of pore water are restricted in the low-permeability and high-pressure host rocks.
