Abstract:In order to make reference in choosing different memory mechanisms in early stage of multiprocessor design process,we integrated two kinds of memory mechanisms(shared and distributed memories) into Simulink-based MPSoC design flow to evaluate the performance for both mechanisms.In Motion-JPEG decoder case study,the developing time for Global FIFO(GFIFO),which represented for GSM,is less than DMS,which represented DSM.DMS decreased execution time and communication time compared to GFIFO.We can make accurate decisions in early multiprocessors design stages based on the results.

Abstract:Reconfigurable computing has become a hot topic in research due to its high-performance and flexibility. In this paper we present a simulator called JRSim for mesh-based reconfigurable architectures. The purpose of this simulator is to provide a platform to evaluate new architectures, and to assist in analysis of algorithms as well as the visualization of their behavior. JRSim is a platform-independent tool which is implemented by Java. It supports flexible bus structure, user-defined function unit and dynamic reconfiguration. Case studies show that JRSim can simulate the behavior of mesh-based reconfigurable systems correctly and efficiently. This simulator can be used to evaluate reconfigurable system design, or demonstrate the ability of reconfigurable system in an educational environment.

Abstract:MDF remote intelligent supervisor system reduces administrators redundance and facilitates concentrating management of the distributed switching offices,which monitors malfunction of the remote office and transfers the messages to the center office. This system adopted ARM7TDMI-S3C44B0X as main processor produced by SAMSUNG Corp. The communication method between center machine and the remote one is based on Ethernet. The paper elaborates the system scheme and the realization of network communication.
A novel cross-layer framework for early-stage power delivery and architecture co-exploration.

Abstract:With the reduced noise margin brought by relentless technology scaling, power integrity assurance has become more challenging than ever. On the other hand, traditional design methodologies typically focus on a single design layer without much cross-layer interaction, potentially introducing unnecessary guard-band and wasting significant design resources. Both issues imperatively call for a cross-layer framework for the co-exploration of power delivery (PD) and system architecture, especially at early design stage with larger design freedom. Unfortunately, such a framework does not exist yet in the literature. As a step forward, this paper provides a run-time simulation framework of both PD and architecture and captures their interactions. Enabled by the proposed recursive run-time PD model, it handles an entire PD system on-the-fly simulation with <1% deviation from SPICE. Moreover, with a seamless interaction among architecture, power and PD simulators, it has the capability to simulate benchmarks with millions of cycles within reasonable time. A support vector regression (SVR) model is employed to further speed up power estimation of functional units to millions cycle/second with good accuracy. The experimental results of running PARSEC suite have illustrated the framework's capability to explore hardware configurations to discover the co-effect of PD and architecture for early stage optimization. Moreover, it also illustrates multiple over-pessimisms in traditional methodologies.

Abstract:Chip multithreading(CMT) represents the direction for future high-performance processors,and simulation is an integral part of the processor architecture research and design process.This paper presents the design and implementation of a SimpleScalar-based cycle-level simulator —OpenSimCMT,which serves for designing and evaluating the CMT architectures.OpenSimCMT features that:(1) supporting the simulation of simultaneous multithreading(SMT) as well as chip multiprocessors(CMP);(2) open framework and well configurable,being extendible to accommodate a given research goal,and readily to append new simulation contents and relative statistic;(3) all-around simulation,supporting inter-thread resource sharing and competition,various function units,pipeline,branch prediction,multi-level caches,etc,facilitating accurate simulation.

Abstract:Performance analysis is an integral part in the development of a networked control system (NCS) since it answers the key question of whether the resulting quality of control (QoC) fulfills its requirements. It is also difficult to analytically quantify the impacts of CPU and network constraints on QoC of NCS. In present work, a simulation-based approach to performance analysis of NCSs subject to CPU and network constraints is proposed, in a manner of integrating scheduling, communication and control. The characteristics of control loop timing are presented as a combination of computational delay and communication delay. A numerical example involving DC servo problems is employed to illustrate our simulation-based approach. How CPU and network constraints, based on different scheduling schemes and network protocols, affect the control performance is shown. Simulation results and analysis give valuable suggests for NCS design.

Abstract:AUTOSAR is a component-based modeling language and development framework for automotive embedded systems. Component-to-ECU mapping is conventionally done manually and empirically. As the number of components and ECUs in vehicles systems grows rapidly, it becomes infeasible to find optimal solutions by hand. We address some design issues involved in mapping an AUTOSAR model to a distributed hardware platform with multiple ECUs connected by a bus, each ECU running a real-time operating system. We present algorithms for extracting connectivity between ports of atomic software components from an AUTOSAR model and for calculating blocking times of all tasks of a taskset scheduled by PCP. We then address optimization issues in mapping AUTOSAR components (SWCs) to distributed multithreaded implementations. We formulate and solve two optimization problems: map SWCs to ECUs with the objective of minimizing the bus load; for a given SWC-to-ECU mapping, map runnable entities on each ECU to OS tasks and assign data consistency mechanism to each shared data item to minimize memory size requirement on each ECU while guaranteeing schedulability of tasksets on all ECUs.

Abstract:Network has pivotal effect on entire system performance in parallel computer system, and SPMD parallel computer system has been used prevalently in science computing and especially in aeronautics astronautics, so performance evaluation simulation system for universal SPMD parallel architecture has been developed. The object-oriented network simulation system in this paper is one part of simulation environment above, using algorithm program of pseudoassemble code as input, configuring architecture parameters, compiling and linking with function library of pseudoassemble code provided by the system to describe different architectures so as to simulate different level and different part of the system. Compared with similar research, ours have the character of more general purpose, which can construct different static and dynamic network expediently, especially could be used to do performance evaluation research on the reconfigurable multilevel interconnected network.

Abstract:With the wide application of System-on-Chip in embedded system design, the hardware-software partitioning turns from a traditional bipartition problem to a multi-way partitioning problem. To deal with this issue, an abstract template of the processing element network connecting with communication channels is proposed for modeling multiple processing module architecture. Simulated annealing and heuristic scheduling algorithms are employed to determine the multi-way hardware-software partition and estimate the system performance and cost respectively. Preliminary experiments show that the proposed algorithm can make reasonable choice among different architectures for the optimization of system performance and cost.

Abstract:Today's System-on-Chips (SoCs) design is extremely challenging because it involves complicated design tradeoffs and heterogeneous design expertise. To explore the large solution space, system architects have to rely on system-level simulators to identify an optimized SoC architecture. In this paper, we propose a system-level simulation framework, System Performance Simulation Implementation Mechanism, or SPSIM. Based on SystemC TLM2.0, the framework consists of an executable SoC model, a simulation tool chain, and a modeling methodology. Compared with the large body of existing research in this area, this work is aimed at delivering a high simulation throughput and, at the same time, guaranteeing a high accuracy on real industrial applications. Integrating the leading TLM techniques, our simulator can attain a simulation speed that is not slower than that of the hardware execution by a factor of 35 on a set of real-world applications. SPSIM incorporates effective timing models, which can achieve a high accuracy after hardware-based calibration. Experimental results on a set of mobile applications proved that the difference between the simulated and measured results of timing performance is within 10%, which in the past can only be attained by cycle-accurate models.

Abstract:The ARM simulator not only eliminates the barriers of embedded systems' hardware environment, but also improves the efficiency, security and reliability for the development process. To improve the performance of an ARM-based function simulation, a novel simulation framework to the ARM processor is proposed, which is based on the ARM instructions' eigenvalue. Therein, functions of registers, the instruction set and the pipeline of the ARM processor are first simulated. Then the key issues, such as computation of the status bits and decoding of the instructions, are deeply studied, which tries to improve the interpretive speed for the simulation. Specially a status calculating algorithm and an instruction matching algorithm based on the eigenvalues are designed. Through theoretical analysis and physical experiments with the simulation in S3C2440, the correctness and efficiency of the simulator are verified.

Abstract:This paper describes the design and implementation of HITASE, a general-purpose architecture Simulation Environment for evaluating performance of parallel machine architecture. This simulation environment is designed for SPMD parallel machines and implemented by using program-driven methodology. Compared to other similar simulation systems, our simulation environment has strong generalities, and can study new architecture, such as a reconfigurable multistage interconnection network.

Abstract:Recent advances in the computing industry towards multiprocessor technologies shifted the dominant method of performance increase from frequency scaling to parallelism. Due to its huge design space, evaluating candidate multicore architectures in early design stages, when the number of variables is at its maximum, is challenging. Simulation plays an important role in estimating architecture performance, and evaluating how the system would perform on average, as well as boundary cases, would require many iterations to cover various cases in the application input domain. Since simulation of heterogeneous systems with enough details are naturally slow, exhaustively evaluating the system for all possible inputs require tremendous amount of time and resources. While there exist quite a :few multiprocessor simulators available, they often rely on individual input specification, demanding extensive input enumeration and simulation runs, diminishing their effectiveness for complex systems evaluation. Aiming to fulfill this gap, we publicly release a heterogeneous multiprocessor system simulation platform called JADE, targeting fast initial architecture explorations. Opposing to most simulators, JADE uses statistical models that follow distributions extracted from internal structures of the application, providing a more convenient and systematic exploration approach to evaluate systems performance. JADE simulation features include detailed electrical and optical interconnections, detailed memory hierarchy infrastructure, and built-in energy analysis allowing studies of a broad spectrum of systems.

Abstract:Projects involving both software design and hardware design are usually retarded by expensive equipments, complex simulation and challenging modification. In order to retrench the designers' time and economic costs in SW/HW (Software/Hardware) co-design simulation, this paper demonstrates a remote embedded simulation system to help multiple users manage and simulate their SW/HW co-design projects remotely while scheduling the access to on-chip FPGA resources. We built a small-scale, high-concurrent multiuser management service system on board. The system offers TCP/IP connection and transmission, flexible Wi-Fi network, secure multiuser information and files management, real-time task progress notification, compilation and execution of multiple programming languages, run-time FPGA configuration and simulation, which considerably augments the exploitability for embedded simulation service. Meanwhile, we offer users a supporting PC (Personal Computer) application to attain pertinent features, which has a multithreading GUI (Graphical User Interface). In order to verify this design, we deploy a prototype on a Xilinx Zynq (TM)-7000 AP (All Programmable) SoC (System on Chips) Z-7010 on a ZYBO Board. We apply an image processing SW/HW co-design project to our prototype. The experiment result demonstrates the system's portability and efficacy when dealing with remote access, and flexibility when simulating SW/HW co-design projects through PR (Partial Reconfiguration) technique within reasonable latency. The latency for the end-to-end reconfiguration of a 306.60KB partial bitfile is 8.819ms.

Abstract:Common random numbers and the standard clock method are examples of effective variance reduction techniques that also share information and simulation resources when generating realizations of different simulated systems whose performances are being compared. This sharing of computing resources and the potentially widely different computational requirements for different simulation models are important considerations in allocating simulation replications among the candidate designs with the objective of maximizing the probability of selecting the best design, and we formulate the optimal computing budget allocation problem under this scenario. The resulting formulation leads to an optimization problem that can be viewed as a generalization of a correlated version considered in earlier work. An approximation to the problem is introduced to allow a tractable solution, for which a heuristic two-stage sequential allocation algorithm is proposed, and several numerical examples are used to illustrate the potential improvements that can be gained.

Abstract:Simultaneous multithreading(SMT)is a latency-tolerant architecture that executes multiple instructions from multiple threads each cycle. In the SMT processor, for on-chip shared storage which is a complicated architecture resource,there aren't good solutions of share and conflict up to now. This paper investigates the problem of partitioning a shared cache between multiple concurrently executing threads, and shows that the commonly used LRU policy implicitly partitions a shared cache on a demand basis, and it will reduce the overall performance sometimes. According to the foregoing problem and taking into account the high-bandwidth Cache access in SMT processor, this paper puts forward adopting a multi-module and multi-banking Cache architecture. The design has been evaluated using a modified SMT simulator. The results show that this architecture improves IPC of a four-way SMT system by up to 9% over the traditional cache based on standard LRU replacement policy.

Abstract:A large semiconductor product company spends hundreds of millions of dollars each year on design infrastructure to meet tapeout schedules for multiple concurrent projects. Resources (servers, electronic design automation tool licenses, engineers, and so on) are limited and must be shared -- and the cost per day of schedule slip can be enormous. Co-constraints between resource types (e.g., one license per every two cores (threads)) and dedicated versus shareable resource pools make scheduling and allocation hard. In this article, we formulate two mixed integer-linear programs for optimal multi-project, multi-resource allocation with task precedence and resource co-constraints. Application to a real-world three-project scheduling problem extracted from a leading-edge design center of anonymized Company X shows substantial compute and license costs savings. Compared to the product company, our solution shows that the makespan of schedule of all projects can be reduced by seven days, which not only saves ∼ 2.7% of annual labor and infrastructure costs but also enhances market competitiveness. We also demonstrate the capability of scheduling over two dozen chip development projects at the design center level, subject to resource and datacenter capacity limits as well as per-project penalty functions for schedule slips. The design center ended up purchasing 600 additional servers, whereas our solution demonstrates that the schedule can be met without having to purchase any additional servers. Application to a four-project scheduling problem extracted from a leading-edge design center in a non-US location shows availability of up to ∼ 37% headcount reduction during a half-year schedule for just one type of chip design activity.
