Abstract:As a part of a project on phytoremediation of lead (Pb) in soils around a tin/lead/zinc (Sn/Pb/Zn) multimetal mine in Datun concentrator of Yunnan Province, the total and sequentially-extracted Pb in soil were investigated. Lead extraction efficiency and soil nutrient leaching by four kinds of chelants such as Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-Na-2) citric acid(CA), oxalic acid(OA) and ethyl lactate(EL) were assessed. Uptake of Pb was also measured in the fronds of Pteris cretica var. nervosa under pot trial condition in which the tested soil was leached by the above four chelants with the concentrations of 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 mmol L-1, respectively. In addition, Pb absorption and concentration in the fronds of Pteris cretica var. nervosa planted in pots of soil leached by 0.1 mmol L-1 of different chelantes was also examined. The results show that Datun soil was moderately polluted, with an average of 859 mg.kg(-1), ranging from 384 to 2802 mg.kg(-1). According to sequential extraction procedure, soil Pb occurred primarily in the Fe/Mn oxides, carbonate and the organic forms, with a ratio of 28.76%, 25.16% and 24.88%, respectively. The leaching rate of Pb was generally listed in the following order: EDTA-Na-2> CA>OA>EL under the same concentration. With the increase of chelant concentration the Pb was extracted more and more. The extracting rate of Pb ranged from 7.35% to 26.56% for EDTA, from 4.35% to 14.23% for CA, from 3.23% to 11.25% for OA and from 0.58% to 1.53% for EL under different chelants treatments, respectively. It is hardly to lose available nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) when soil was leached by 0.1 mmol L-1 different chelants. The sequence of soil available N leaching was EDTA-Na2> OA >CA >EL; available P leaching sequence was CA>OA>EDTA-Na-2> EL; organic matter leaching sequence was leached by OA>CA>EDTA-Na-2> EL. However, there was no significant difference in soil nutrient runoff when the soil was leached by different chelants. There was also no obvious difference in soil nutrient runoff between each chelant and deionized water. Pb concentrations in the fronds of Pteris cretica var. nervosa planted in soil which was leached by 0.01 mmol L-1 EDTA-Na-2, CA, OA and EL were 16.59, 27.88, 46.85 and 59.12 mg.kg(-1), respectively. These results mentioned above show that available Pb in Datun soil has been almost I cached, especially in EDTA-Na2 treatment. The leaching rate of soil nutrients, such as available N, P and organic matter, was low. EDTA-Na2 was the best eluant among the four tested chelants, suggesting that it will be useful in chelant-induced phyto-remediation.
