Abstract:Objective:To explore whether nicotine has a neuroprotective effect on the focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion(I/R)injury in rats.Methods:Thirty min after the injection of nicotine ditartrate,focal cerebral ischemia was induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO)for 120 min in male Sprague-Dawley rats.The neurobehavioral scores,infarct volumes were evaluated at 24 h of reperfusion.Results:After 24 h of reperfusion,nicotine ditartrate injection improved neurological outcome and reduced infarct size(P<0.05).Conclusion:These results suggest that nicotine can have neuroprotection against I/R injury.
