Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of solutions to the centroaffine Minkowski problem, namely the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space R n + 1 \mathbb {R}^{n+1} with prescribed centroaffine curvature. This problem can be described as a variational problem with a functional resembling Kantorovich’s dual functional in optimal transportation. By using the Gauss curvature flow, we obtain new conditions for the existence of solutions to the problem.

Abstract:Given a function f > 0 on the unit sphere n +1 , the Minkowski problem in the sphere concerns the existence of convex hypersurfaces M subset of(n +1) such that the Gauss curvature of M at z is equal to f (v( z )), where v(z) is the unit outer normal of M at z . We use the min-max principle and the Gauss curvature flow to prove that there are at least two solutions to the problem. By using the rotating plane method in the sphere, we also show the existence of a rotationally symmetric and monotone function f such that there are exactly two solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed kth order symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor on compact Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution set for the case k >= n/2, provided the conformal class admits a k-admissible metric. These results have been proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky, Trudinger and Wang for the manifolds without boundary, and by Jin et al. and S. Chen for the locally conformally flat manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of finding closed hypersurfaces with prescribed Weingarten curvature in a large class of Riemannian manifolds. Under some sufficient conditions, we obtain an existence result by establishing a priori estimates and standard degree theory for the admissible solutions to the prescribed curvature equation. We mainly show that the primary technique developed in Urbas, Wang and the second author’s work in 2004 is flexible enough to be used in more general ambient geometry.

Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:To study the prescribed $k$ -curvature problem of 2nd-order symmetric curvature tensors on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds, we consider a class of fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. It is proved that on a Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature and Ricci curvature bounded from below, the equation is solvable provided that all the eigenvalues of the tensor are negative. The result is applicable to the prescribed $k$ -curvature problems of modified Schouten tensor and Bakry–Émery Ricci tensor.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve a class of Neumann problems on a manifold with totally geodesic smooth boundary. As a consequence, we also solve the prescribing k-curvature problem of the modified Schouten tensor on such manifolds; that is, if the initial k-curvature of the modified Schouten tensor is positive for tau > n - 1 or negative for tau < 1, then there exists a conformal metric such that its k-curvature defined by the modified Schouten tensor equals some prescribed function and the boundary remains totally geodesic.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed hypersurface with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere. Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form. We prove that if a(n, H) <= S <= alpha( n, H)+ CnH2, where n >= 4 and H not equal 0, then S = alpha( n, H) and M is a Clifford torus Sn-1(r(1)) x S-1(r(2)). Here alpha(n, H) = n + n(3)/2(n -1) H-2 - n(n - 2)/2(n - 1) root n(2)H(4) + 4(n - 1) H-2, and C-n is a positive constant explicitly depending on n. The emphasis is that our gap theorem imposes no restriction on the range of mean curvature. Moreover, we obtain gap theorems for complete hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in space forms.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the following prescribed Gaussian curvature problem: K = (f)over tilde>(theta)/phi(r)(alpha-2)root phi(r)2 + vertical bar(del) over bar rho vertical bar(2), a generalization of the Alexandrov problem (alpha = n + 1) in hyperbolic space, where (f)over tilde> is a smooth positive function on S-n, rho is the radial function of the hypersurface, phi(rho) = sinh rho and K is the Gauss curvature. By a flow approach, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the above equations when alpha >= n + 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in smooth category for the Alexandrov problem in Hn+1. We also consider the cases 2 < a <= n + 1 under the evenness assumption of <(f)over tilde> and prove the existence of solutions to the above equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider Weingarten curvature equations for $k$-convex hypersurfaces with $n<2k$ in a warped product manifold $\overline{M}=I\times_{\lambda}M$. Based on the conjecture proposed by Ren-Wang in \cite{Ren2}, which is valid for $k\geq n-2$, we derive curvature estimates for equation $\sigma_k(\kappa)= \psi (V, \nu (V))$ through a straightforward proof. Furthermore, we also obtain an existence result for the star-shaped compact hypersurface $\Sigma$ satisfying the above equation by the degree theory under some sufficient conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate Hessian curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed Gauss images. Given geodesically strictly convex bounded domains $\Omega$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\tilde{\Omega}$ in the unit hemisphere, we prove that there is a strictly convex graphic hypersurface defined in $\Omega$ with prescribed $k$-Hessian curvatures such that its Gauss image is $\tilde{\Omega}$. Our proof relies on a novel $C^2$ boundary estimate which utilizes the orthogonal invariance of hypersurfaces. Indeed, we employ some special vector fields generated by the infinitesimal rotations in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ to establish the boundary $C^2$ estimates. This new approach enables us to handle the additional negative terms that arise when taking second order derivatives near the boundary.

Abstract:In this paper we study the prescribed centroaffine curvature problem in the Euclidean space Rn+1. This problem is equivalent to solving a Monge–Ampère equation on the unit sphere. It corresponds to the critical case of the Blaschke–Santaló inequality. By approximation from the subcritical case, and using an obstruction condition and a blow-up analysis, we obtain sufficient conditions for the a priori estimates, and the existence of solutions up to a Lagrange multiplier.

Abstract:Given a compact Riemannian manifold M, we consider a warped product manifold ${\bar{M}} = I \times _h M$, where I is an open interval in ${\mathbb {R}}$. For a positive function $\psi $ defined on ${\bar{M}}$, we generalize the arguments in Guan et al. (Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 68(8):1287–1325, 2015) and Ren and Wang (On the curvature estimates for Hessian equations, 2016. arXiv:1602.06535), to obtain the curvature estimates for Hessian equations $\sigma _k(\kappa )=\psi (V,\nu (V))$. We also obtain some existence results for the starshaped compact hypersurface $\Sigma $ satisfying the above equation with various assumptions.

Abstract:We prove three results in this paper: First, we prove, for a wide class of functions phi is an element of C2(Sn-1) and psi(X, nu) is an element of C2(Rn+1 x Hn), there exists a unique, entire, strictly convex, spacelike hypersurface Mu satisfying sigma k(kappa[Mu]) = psi(X, nu) and u(x) -> |x| + phi(x/|x|) as |x| -> infinity. Second, when k = n-1, n-2, we show the existence and uniqueness of an entire, k -convex, spacelike hypersurface Mu satisfying sigma k(kappa[Mu]) = psi(x, u(x)) and u(x) -> |x| + phi(x/|x|) as |x| -> infinity. Last, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of entire, strictly convex, downward translating solitons Mu with prescribed asymptotic behavior at infinity for sigma k curvature flow equations. Moreover, we prove that the downward translating solitons Mu have bounded principal curvatures.

Abstract:The $L_p$-Christoffel-Minkowski problem and the prescribed $L_p$-Weingarten curvature problem for convex hypersurfaces in Euclidean space are important problems in geometric analysis. In this paper, we consider their counterparts in hyperbolic space. For the horospherical $p$-Christoffel-Minkowski problem first introduced and studied by the second and third authors, we prove the existence of smooth, origin-symmetric, strictly horospherically convex solutions by establishing a new full rank theorem. We also propose the prescribed $p$-shifted Weingarten curvature problem and prove an existence result.

Abstract:We derive global curvature estimates for closed, strictly star-shaped $(n-2)$-convex hypersurfaces in warped product manifolds, which satisfy the prescribed $(n-2)$-curvature equation with a general right-hand side. The proof can be readily adapted to establish curvature estimates for semi-convex solutions to the general $k$-curvature equation. Furthermore, it can also be used to prove the same estimates for $k$-convex solutions to the prescribed curvature measure type equations.
