Abstract:New experimental results of the EMC effect are discussed. It is shown that the distortion of the structure function of a nucleon bound in a nucleus may be understood by means of the valon picture.

Abstract:The Z -> e(+)e(-) decay is studied based on the noncommutative standard model with the hybrid gauge transformation. It is shown that if the latter is not included, the noncommutative correction to the amplitude of the Z -> e(+)e(-) appears only as a phase factor, so that there is no new physical effect on the decay width. However, when the hybrid gauge transformation is included, the noncommutative effect appears in the two-body decay process. The discrepancy between the experimental branch ratio and the standard model prediction allows us to set the bound on the noncommutative parameters.

Abstract:The nuclear structure functions of and are derived using the valon-constituent quark formalism within the quark exchange model. Nuclear corrections on the structure functions and EMC ratios of these light nuclei are investigated. Initially, bare constituent quark distributions are obtained within bounded nucleons through the quark exchange model. Subsequently, parton densities within valon-constituent quarks are extracted using the valon-constituent quark model. Comparison with experimental data from HERMES, EMC, NMC, and recent JLab data validates the calculations, showing agreement with both experimental results and theoretical predictions.

Abstract:We discuss the electromagnetic form factors, axial form factors, and structure functions of a bound nucleon in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. Free space nucleon form factors are calculated using the improved cloudy bag model (ICBM). After describing finite nuclei and nuclear matter in the quark-based QMC model, we compute the in-medium modification of the bound nucleon form factors in the same framework. Finally, limits on the medium modification of the bound nucleon $F_2$ structure function are obtained using the calculated in-medium electromagnetic form factors and local quark-hadron duality.

Abstract:All patients taking methotrexate for treatment of psoriasis over the past 5 yr have been reviewed. Thirty-eight patients have had pretreatment liver biopsies and at least 1 repeat liver biopsy. Of the 38, nine (24%) have developed significant liver fibrosis or cirrhosis, and have stopped treatment. The high incidence of fibrosis is attributed to synergism between methotrexate and other hepatotoxic factors, particularly alcohol, the use of a baseline biopsy to identify subsequent changes, and the early detection of fibrosis by sensitive histological techniques.

Abstract:The parton evolution model is improved by using the modified Alteralli-Parisi equation which can describe the nuclear shadowing and antishadowing effects in the small x region. Within the theoretical framework of the improved parton evolution model. the unified description of the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect, and nuclear shadowing and antishadowing effects is given without introducing the nuclear shadowing factor.

Abstract:Deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering is treated by considering the nucleus as a bound system of nucleons based on the light-cone quantum field theory. This method has the advantages that the impulse approximation is justified and that baryon number conservation is guaranteed. However, the ambiguities in identifying the structure function for bound nucleons in the conventional nucleonic approach seem not to have been avoided. It is also shown that a consistent calculation gives an unreasonably large Q2 dependence in the calculated nuclear structure function if one makes the most natural assumption to identify the off-"energy"-shell structure function for bound nucleons.

Abstract:Nucleon electromagnetic form factors are studied in the cloudy bag model (CBM) with center-of-mass and recoil corrections. This is the first presentation of a full set of nucleon form factors using the CBM. The center of mass motion is eliminated via several different momentum projection techniques and the results are compared. It is found that the shapes of these form factors are significantly improved with respect to the experimental data if the Lorentz contraction of the internal structure of the baryon is also appropriately taken into account.

Abstract:A new two-component model of the EMC effect based on Light-Front Holographic QCD (LFHQCD) is presented. The model suggests the EMC effect is the result of the nuclear potential breaking SU(6) symmetry. The model separates the $F_2^A$ nuclear structure function into two parts: a free contribution, involving the addition of proton and neutron structure functions weighted by the number of protons and neutrons respectively, and a nuclear/medium modified contribution that involves a universal function for all nuceli. Further, the model displays a connection with the correlation between the size of the EMC effect and the SRC pair density, $a_2$ - extracted from kinematic plateaus at around $x$ > 1 in inclusive quasi-elastic (QE) scattering.

Abstract:The relationship between medium modifications of nucleon electromagnetic form factors and nucleon structure functions is examined using a model motivated by Light-Front Holographic QCD (LFHQCD). These modifications are closely connected with the influence of short-ranged correlations. The size of the modifications to nucleon form factors is shown to be about the same as the modifications to the structure functions. Thus, small limits on form factors modifications do not rule out an explanation of the EMC effect motivated by the influence of short range correlations, as claimed by a recent paper.

We find that the structure modifications of the N-N SRC nucleons reproduce more or less the measured EMC ratios of light nuclei, while they are not enough to explain the measured EMC ratios of heavy nuclei. We speculate that the hypothesis of causal connection between SRC and the EMC effect is not exact, or the universality of the inner structure of SRC nucleon is violated noticeably from light to heavy nuclei, or there are other origins for the EMC effect.

By using a x -rescaling approach we are able to understand the interplay between the quark-gluon and hadronic degrees of freedom in the discussion of the EMC effect.

Abstract:The fundamental theory of the strong interaction -- quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- provides the foundational framework with which to describe and understand the key properties of atomic nuclei. A deep understanding of the explicit role of quarks and gluons in nuclei remains elusive however, as these effects have thus far been well-disguised by confinement effects in QCD which are encapsulated by a successful description in terms of effective hadronic degrees of freedom. The observation of the EMC effect has provided an enduring indication for explicit QCD effects in nuclei, and points to the medium modification of the bound protons and neutrons in the nuclear medium. Understanding the EMC effect is a major challenge for modern nuclear physics, and several key questions remain, such as understanding its flavor, spin, and momentum dependence. This manuscript provides a contemporary snapshot of our understanding of the role of QCD in nuclei and outlines possible pathways in experiment and theory that will help deepen our understanding of nuclei in the context of QCD.

Abstract:The off-shell behaviors of bound nucleons in deep inelastic lepton nucleus scattering are discussed in two scenarios with the basic constituents chosen to be baryon-mesons and quark-gluons respectively in light-cone formalism. It is found that when taking into account the effect due to internal quark structure of nucleons, the derived scaling variable for bound nucleons and the calculated nuclear structure functions are different from those in considering the baryon-mesons as the effective elementary constituents. This implies that the pure baryon-meson descriptions of nuclei give the inaccurate off-shell behavior of the bound nucleon structure function, thereby the quark-gluons seem to be the most appropriate degrees of freedom for nuclear descriptions. It is also shown that the EMC effect cannot be explained by nuclear binding effect from a sound theoretical basis.

Abstract:We study medium modifications of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors in the vector meson dominance model. The in-medium vector meson masses are taken from a chiral SU(3) model. We find that the electric and magnetic form factors of the bound nucleon deviate considerably from those of the free nucleon. Our results are comparable to the results from the quark meson coupling model approach and are consistent with present experimental limits.

Abstract:A simple statistical model in terms of light-front kinematic variables is used to explain the nuclear EMC effect in the range $x \in [0.2,~0.7]$, which was constructed by us previously to calculate the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the nucleon. Here, we treat the temperature $T$ as a parameter of the atomic number $A$, and get reasonable results in agreement with the experimental data. Our results show that the larger $A$, the lower $T$ thus the bigger volume $V$, and these features are consistent with other models. Moreover, we give the predictions of the quark distribution ratios, \emph{i.e.}, $q^A(x) / q^D(x)$, $\bar{q}^A(x) / \bar{q}^D(x)$, and $s^A(x) / s^D(x)$, and also the gluon ratio $g^A(x) / g^D(x)$ for iron as an example. The predictions are different from those by other models, thus experiments aiming at measuring the parton ratios of antiquarks, strange quarks, and gluons can provide a discrimination of different models.

Abstract:This article provides a review on the studies of exotic nuclear structure using electron scat-tering associated with the relativistic mean field model by our group in recent years. The magnetic electron scattering in the relativistic mean field framework was developed and used to investigate the ground-state configurations of some candidates of neutron-halo and proton-halo nuclei, such as 23O, 17,19C and 23 Al. It is found that the elastic magnetic form factors for different configurations differ greatly from each other. The elastic Coulomb electron scattering in the relativistic Eikonal approximation was also developed and used to investigate the charge densities of exotic nuclei. It was found that the extended charge densities in some proton-rich nuclei can be measured by the Coulomb electron scattering. This method was further general-ized to the elastic parity violating electron scattering to investigate the neutron densities of some typical nu-clei, such as Ca isotopic chains, N=50 isotonic chains and N=Z doubly magic nuclei. Results show that the amplitudes of the parity violating asymmetries are mainly determined by the distances between the min-ima of the proton and neutron form factors. The results provide useful references for the future electron scattering experiments on the next-generation electron-nucleus colliders.

Abstract:A new and simple statistical approach is performed to calculate the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the nucleon in terms of light-front kinematic variables. Analytic expressions of x-dependent PDFs are obtained in the whole x region. And thereafter, we treat the temperature T as a parameter of the atomic number A to explain the nuclear EMC effect in the region x ∈ [0.2, 0.7]. We give the predictions of PDF ratios, and they are very different from those by other models, thus experiments aiming at measuring PDF ratios are suggested to provide a discrimination of different models.
The EMC effect for few-nucleon bound systems in Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics

Abstract:The light-front formalism for a covariant description of the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect, already applied to $^3$He, is formally extended to any nucleus, and used for actually calculating the $^3$H and $^4$He cases. The realistic and accurate nuclear description of few-nucleon bound systems, obtained with both phenomenological and chiral potentials, has been properly combined with the Poincare' covariance and macroscopic locality, automatically satisfying both number of particles and momentum sum rule. While retaining the on-mass-shell nucleon structure functions, one is then able to predict a sizable EMC effect for $^4$He, as already observed for $^3$He. Moreover, the impact on the EMC effect of both i) the short-range correlations, such as those generated by modern nuclear interactions, and ii) the ratio between the neutron and proton structure functions has been studied. The short-range correlations generated by retaining only the standard nuclear degrees of freedom act on the depth of the minimum in the EMC ratio, while the uncertainties linked to the ratio of neutron to proton structure functions are found to be very small. These light-front results facilitates ascribing deviations from experimental data due to genuine QCD effects, not included in a standard nuclear description, and initiating unbiased investigations.

Abstract:We show how the effective action of the Extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model (ENJL) can be defined in the presence of anomalies in a way that reproduces the flavour anomaly. This necessarily breaks Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) in the usual sense. The same method can be used to construct other chiral effective theories involving constituent quarks and spin-1 mesons that give the correct flavour anomaly. We also comment on how standard VMD is the root of this problem and those observed by previous authors in implementing VMD in the anomalous sector.
