Abstract:Reflection on and criticism of enlightenment reason is an indispensable part of the Enlightenment itself. It is an important counterbalance to the Enlightenment myth and the crisis of modernity, as well as being a major theoretical subject for political philosophy in the age of globalization. This reflection and criticism must be grasped and examined from both the external perspective of socio-historical requirements and the internal perspective of intellectual history. While giving full credit to the achievements of Enlightenment reason and modernity, we need to review their inherent conflicts, reveal the resultant social crisis, and sort out, reflect on and reference postmodernism's denunciation of Enlightenment reason and the crisis of modernity in order to provide a more far-reaching solution to these issues. Marx turned the critique of Enlightenment reason and modernity into a critical reconstruction of the logic of capital and the capitalist mode of production, seeing the resolution of these evils as lying in transcendence of capitalist private ownership. In this way, he brought the critique of Enlightenment reason to a climax and showed modern society a way to more advanced development.

Abstract:As a late-coming capitalist country, the political and ideological cultures of America have late coming features. Modern American philosophies were imported from Europe, but were reconstructed adaptable to American special condition. What they really concerned is to solve the problems in the real life and practice rather than to construct strict and integrated theoretical system. Compare to European, Modern American philosophy is slightly inferior by theoretical deepness, but has better function in promotion of the development of real life.

Abstract:Britain saw the beginning of modern transformation of Western philosphy.The development of British philosophy can be classified into two stages from the mid 19th century to the beginning of 20th century.The first stage is characterized by positivism influenced by and integrated into such scientific thoughts as classical economics,utilitarian ethics and evolution theory,which greatly stimulates the anti-metaphisical tendency of modern philosophy.The second stage is featured by German idealism brought out by literary movements of romanticism and the absolute idealism.Those two stages of philosophy development can be included into the modern transformation of philosophy.

Abstract:Marxist philosophy belongs to the category of modern philosophy in nature,because of its modernity and meaning.Such modernity is just reflected in the criticism of modernity.Firstly,philosophy turns the model of ontology into that of survival;then,theory puts an end to the hegemony of traditional metaphysics in its specification and elaboration about human,and realize the change in direction with success;meanwhile,the theory of social criticism fulfills the function of "critical weapon",providing a referance for the improvement of individual survival.Marxist philosophy,when criticizing and surpasing,directs straightforwardly at the issue of human being itself,making some possibly theoretical room for the self-unity in the crisis of modernity,and giving a reply to the crisis of human nature as well,which displays the critical awareness of the modernity of Marxist philosophy in the perspective of human nature.

Abstract:For evaluating the contemporary significance of John Dewey's philosophy, it is necessary to study the basic meaning of Dewey's philosophy and its relation with the tendency of Western philosophy as well as Marxist philosophy under the general background of the philosophic revolution of Karl Marx and the modern-contemporary turn of Western philosophy. This paper holds that the basic meaning of Dewey's philosophy is to emphasize real life and practice. The philosophical reconstruction of Dewey is adaptable to the trend of the contemporary change of Western philosophy. While there is a principal difference between the revolution of Marxist philosophy and the reconstruction of Dewey's philosophy, they lead to the same goal by different ways in transcending the limitations of modern philosophy.

Since modern Chinese philosophers have done philosophy so much, what does “modernization of Chinese philosophy” mean For some people, it means that study of traditional Chinese philosophy is not so modern; for the other people, the means and methods for the study of Chinese philosophy is obsolete. However, since people identify modernization with Westernization consciously or unconsciously, the problem is far from its solution. What “modernization of Chinese philosophy” means is to connect modern problems with traditional thought and creatively transformation, enrich and develop traditional thought in its confronting and responding to the challenges of modern times. We need not only the renewal of methodology, but also Chinese discourse of philosophy.

Abstract:The 19th century was a century of the real beginning of scientific age, as well as the century of crisis appearing in the development of modern science. At that time, the development of science not only expanded to vast realms of mankind's activity, but also more and more showed the tendency to combine together with the human realistic life and practice. The change (differentiation), growth, conversion, process, evolution of natural things, and the relative manifestation of time and historicity and other causes was more and more prone to the affirmation of dialectical mode of thinking and to the negation of the traditional metaphysics mode of thinking represented by the 17th and 18th centuries. Both the revolutionary change in philosophy practised by Karl Marx and the transformation from modern philosophy to contemporary philosophy practised by western philosophers were deeply influenced under such epoch-making changes of natural sciences, and both of which took such influences as the important theoretical background.

Abstract:The year 1956 witnessed a historical transition in the realm of ideology and culture in China after a long process of twists and turns.Just around the year,Fudan University together with other key universities in China established or reestablished their philosophy departments with disciplines on the Western philosophy,including its contemporary part.The anti-rightist movement of 1957 choked the progress and the situation was much worse in the Cultural Revolution,not until the end of which did the study resumed.Since the reform and opening,the study in this discipline has got through three main stages: to start from scratch;to abandon the simplified pattern of critique and turn to objective and practical studies;to integrate the discipline with the study of Marxist philosophy. It has made great progress in the academic faculty and the width and depth of the research,but inadequacies remain.It is necessary to study the contemporary Western philosophy further both in individual case and on the whole.To communicate with Chinese traditional philosophy and Marxist philosophy,this principle is supposed to draw on positive points and transcend the limits.

Abstract:Some scholars affirm that there are some common social-historical and theoretical backgrounds between the revolutionary change in Marx's philosophy and contemporary transformation of western philosophy and in some sense, the transformation from modern philosophy to contemporary one is a transformation to real life and practice, which will make revolutionary change and contemporary transformation be mentioned in the same breath. Abstract:There is a close relationship between philosophy and its time. For this reason, one must comprehend modern times and modernity in order to understand contemporary Western philosophy (CWP). CWP is the outcome of the crisis of modernity, which has been understood as the spiritual or cultural crisis by Western philosophers. Their work has been much conditioned by this understanding. Thus, this makes, to a great extent, CWP a critique of rationality or of culture. CWP is an answer to and the extrication of the predicament of modern Western philosophy. Abstract:The pragmatist criticism of essentialism triggered the campaign that post-modernity replaced modernity in philos- ophy.Heidegger opposed both pragmatism and essentialism.His view that there is a deep relationship between pragmatism and essentialism became a theoretical origin of which post-modern philosophers radically criticized the modernity.By cate- gorizing knowledge as scientific knowledge and narrative knowledge,Lyotard unveiled the mystery that essentialism became a universal mode of modern people life.Foucault pointed out,under the condition of modernity,how the relationship between text and power effectively controls society and its culturalproduction through discourse.Derrida's view that text is irrelevant to outside power not only indicated the significant difference between him and Foucault,but also propelled Heidegger's criti- cism of essentialism.At the same time,it also expanded philosophy into literature.This paper attempts to establish the rela- tionship among all above-mentioned aspects and traces back to the theoretical characteristics of ancient Greek philosophy.

Abstract:This essay seeks to demonstrate the metaphysical commensurability between Chinese and Western philosophy through a comparative study of the metaphysics of the mind as expounded by René Descartes and Wang Yangming. This commensurability, I suggest, brings to light a shared but hitherto neglected philosophical early modernity registered in the metaphysical reorientation from Nature or things towards the mind. The ontological primacy of the mind asserted by both Descartes and Yangming lies at the root of the epistemological and moral autonomy marking the modern subject that rose to prominence in Renaissance Europe and Ming China. The parallel philosophical early modernity manifested in Cartesian and Yangming's metaphysics of the mind, I propose, calls into doubt the alleged lack of metaphysics in Chinese philosophy.

Abstract:The most positive evaluation of the classical(pre-Qin) Chinese philosophy so far is to compare it with classical(Greek) philosophy,taking both as thoughts of the axial age.However,not only is the Chinese thought a form of political philosophy,but the times when the classical Chinese philosophers lived in were more comparable with those of Western modernization,meaning that the problems they were dealing with were problems of modernity.Among these modern political philosophers,Han Fei Zi most ably demonstrated his explicit awareness of the nature of political and social changes of his times through his writings.His discussion of the distinctions between the ancients and the moderns can still shed light on the debates between moral conservatism and moral nihilism as well other issues of modernity.Furthermore,to evaluate his thoughts critically can also help us to deepen our understanding of modernity and to criticize some ideas of liberalism and pluralism.

Abstract:Taking several opinions about the book Marxism and the modern-contemporary trend of western philosophy as direction, the author of the paper gives further explanation to clarify his views on some problems. The first is concerning the relation between the modes of philosophic thought and the basic standpoint of philosophers. After limiting the implication of the modes, the paper analyzes the relation as the result of its construction, and compares their importance. The second is on the modes of thought of duality of subject-object and the transcendence to it in contemporary western philosophy. The author inquired the implication of the duality, its role, limitations as well as the success and failures. The third is on the relation of Marxist philosophy and contemporary western philosophy. The author discusses two questions. One is the main deviation of academic circle in treating the relation at present time. Another is how we treat the connection and essential difference.

Abstract:By explanations of origination,development and their fundamental connotations of theories of Zhu-zi and Yang-ming,the modern significations of them will be illustrated.The most vital part of Zhu-zi theory is that of "to obtain knowledge by investigating nature of things",the distinctiveness of which is to do one's best to establish a position for knowledge inquiry activities of people.Minds equaling to sense and acquiring conscience constitute main philosophic propositions,in which "integrating conscience and activities into a whole" shows an important feature of this antilogy.Zhu-zi emphasized the characters of reading and studying,which offers a very good instruction for setting up modern "studying society" and "lifelong education".As for college's general education,the thoughts of Zhu-zi besides those of Confucian's impart the most important sources.Zhu-zi advocated that "own reverence" stands for working attitudes of self-restrained,solemnity and earnest,and diligence and undivided,which still offers important sources to maintain positive ethic for East Asian societies.Yang-ming theory emphasizes practice which embodies "integrating conscience and activities into a whole","tempering oneself by doing things",this kind of philosophic spirits merged with practical philosophy development since 19th century is interlinked well with modern philosophy.The idea of Wang Yang-ming's all things are one merits ecumenical value in terms of human peaceful development and ethic supporting for ecological and environment protection.

Abstract:Being in accord with the great transformation of modern Chinese literature, modern Chinese literary theory is formed against the backdrop of changing modern cultural values in modern China. The multi-roles it has played in modern Chinese society include cultural intervention, social act, and construction of anesthetic experience and literary appreciation. It thus, through a dynamic dialogue between authoritative Western literary theory and traditional Chinese literary theory, manifests distinct features of modernity: vernacular written language, academic institutionalization, cultural explicitness, revolutionary radicalness, Westernization of inner system, and implicit Chinese traditions. Abstract:In contemporary Chinese theory of literature, a variety of fallacy has appeared in the controversy of the function of reason in literature. This is because that, aside from the incompleteness of theoretical construction, it is a more essential reason that the conception of reason in worldwide scope has taken a turn through the modernist movement. Being reasonable has substituted for the grand reason and becomes the first principle, which results in a literary resistance to reason and, at the same time, caused an irrational paradox.
