Abstract:Basing on the nonlinear dynamics theory,the study of the dynamical stability analysis of ship in random sea is carried out to deduce the capsize mechanism of ship. By virtue of the ideal of ship's undesirable capsize,the result of this paper shows that the globe bifurcation of the nonlinear stochastic dynamic system is one of the way leading to the ship's capsize.Basing on this viewpoint,the stochastic Melnikov method is used to attain the threshold of the dangerous sea condition. And then this threshold can serve as an item to assess the capacity of the ship anti-capsize.

Abstract:The first passage failure theory is applied in studying the stability of a ship under stochas-tic wave excitations.The ship's rolling equation is first reduced to a set of first order stochastic differ-ential equations by applying a set of transformations based upon generalized harmonic functions. Then,closed-form expressions for the averaged drift and diffusion coefficients for the amplitude pro-cess differential equation are obtained by utilizing a new stochastic averaging procedure.Next, a Pon-tryagin-Vitt equation governing the mean first passage time of the rolling amplitude process is estab-lished. The two boundary conditions for the Pontryagin-Vitt equation are derived, and the mean first passage time and the first passage probability density values are obtained by numerically solving the boundary value problem.

Abstract:In inland waterways, waves generated by passing boats cause the movement of riprap used for bank protection and stabilization. Previous studies have mainly concerned the natural channel erosion problem caused by wind-generated waves and neglected the research and findings on shipping behavior. This work presents a coupling of the computational fluid dynamics model and the discrete element method. The aim is to first study the interactions between ship waves in the confined channel and the movements of the riprap of the banks and shorelines and second to analyze the stability of these armourstones under the actions of various ship velocities and draught depths. These varying conditions exert influence on the ship-induced waves, the crucial point being the drawdown amplitude, and consequently create more intense flow behavior in the near-shore region, which results in instability and destruction of the overall structure of the armor protection layer. The higher ship velocity and the larger draught depth lead to the aggravation of instability processes of the blocs composing the protective layer. There is a critical phenomenon in the influence mechanism of vessel velocity, whereas the variation process induced by draught depth is relatively linear. In addition, the stability of the blocs also depends on their shapes, sizes, and the initial positions within the protective layer. This study could contribute to the high-quality development of inland navigation.

Abstract:The nonlinear biased ship rolling motion and capsizing in random waves are studied by utilizing a global geometric method.Thompson’s α-parameterized family of restoring functions is adopted in the vessel equation of motion for the representation of bias.To take into account the presence of randomness in the excitation and the response,a stochastic Melnikov method is developed and a mean-square criterion is obtained to provide an upper bound on the domain of the potential chaotic rolling motion.This criterion can be used to predict the qualitative nature of the invariant manifolds which represent the boundary between safe and unsafe initial conditions,and how these depend on system parameters of the specific ship model.Phase space transport theory and lobe dynamics are used to demonstrate how motions starting from initial conditions inside the regions bounded by the intersected manifolds will evolve and how unexpected capsizing can occur.

Abstract:The current ship stability criteria (set out in the IMO codes) were established mainly through statistical analysis of some maritime disaster data. These criteria, which are empirical and semi-empirical regulations, and which ignore the effects of ship motions and random waves, are clearly physically implausible. Thus, naval architects and marine engineers agree that these criteria should be modified by applying ship-wave hydrodynamic models, by describing the sea surface as a random field, and by analyzing the ship as a six-degree-of-freedom rigid body using stochastic dynamical systems theories.

Abstract:We have elucidated two methods for analyzing the stochastic dynamic response of marine structures under the action of random loads in the previous two chapters. We have mentioned in the introduction that the response problem is closely related to the stability problem, so starting from this chapter we will explicate the analytical methods for the stability problem of marine structures under random excitations. In particular, we will explicate the problem of the intact stability of a ship in random waves. The stability of a ship refers to the ability of the ship not to capsize although it inclines under the action of external forces, and to return to its original equilibrium position when the action of external forces disappears. The intact stability of a ship is the stability of the ship when it is not damaged and remains intact. The intact stability of a ship is one of the most important technical properties of the ship. We know that if the extreme rolling response of a floating marine structure exceeds a critical value, the structure will lose its stability and capsize.

Abstract:The action of wind and waves has a significant effect on the ship’s roll, which can be a source of chaos and even capsize. The influence of random wave excitation is considered in order to investigate complex dynamic behavior by analytical and numerical methods. Chaotic rolling motions are theoretically studied in detail by means of the relevant Melnikov method with or without noise excitation. Numerical simulations are used to verify and analyze the appropriate parameter excitation and noise conditions. The results show that by changing the parameters of the excitation amplitude or the noise intensity, chaos can be induced or suppressed.

Abstract:The impact of ocean waves and crosswinds on ships has long been a focal point of research for many scholars. This paper proposes a stochastic ship rolling model influenced by crosswinds, ocean waves, and time delays. The safe operating region for ship navigation is presented through the phase space of the system. A quantitative discussion of the system is conducted using the stochastic Melnikov function, and the stochastic P-D bifurcation of the system is discussed using topological data analysis techniques. The research indicates that incorporating time delay feedback can effectively enhance the system's stability.

Abstract:The nonlinear ship rolling motion with water-on-deck in regular beam waves is studied by utilizing a global geometric method. A ship stability criterion based upon the Melnikov function is obtained to provide an upper bound on the domain of the potential chaotic rolling motion. Abstract:Ship parametric roll is one of the main reasons for marine accidents and is introduced into the second-generation intact stability criteria by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently. In this paper, a 6-DOF three-dimensional time-domain model based on the IRF (Impulse Response Function) method is constructed to predict large-amplitude ship motions and investigate the phenomenon of parametric roll in head waves as well as major factors. The F-K forces and the restoring forces are calculated on the instantaneous wet surface while the radiation and diffraction forces are kept linear and transformed from frequency-domain results calculated with the three-dimensional Havelock form translating-pulsating source green function method. The proposed weakly nonlinear time-domain model is used to simulate motions of the C11 containership, which predicts the occurrence of the parametric roll successfully and shows a good agreement with the experimental data in amplitude. The inner mechanism of parametric roll is revealed by investigating the time-history and resonance frequencies of restoring forces and coefficients numerically.
Analytical Evaluation of First Passage Failure for Nonlinear Ship Rolling Excited by Random Wave

Abstract:The first passage failure of nonlinear ship rolling excited by random wave is evaluated through two novel procedures. The stochastic averaging technique based on the generalized harmonic functions and the diffusion process theory are adopted in the first procedure. The amplitude response is approximated by a Markov diffusion process, while the conditional reliability function and moments of the first passage time are derived by numerically solving the backward Kolmogorov equation and Pontryagin equation, respectively. The second procedure resorts to the stochastic averaging technique and the Laplace integral method. The transient probability density of the amplitude response is expressed through the probability current, and the reliability function is established by integrating the transient probability density on the safety domain. The asymptotic solutions for the conditional reliability function and moments of the first passage time are derived through the Laplace integral method. The first procedure is hybrid method while the second is entirely analytical. The applicability and accuracy of the proposed two procedures are illustrated by comparing to the results from Monte Carlo simulations. The effective parameter ranges of the analytical expression are exhibited with special emphasis.

Abstract:The present study aimed to find the truth about the effect of ocean waves on the process of righting a capsized ship by employing common computational methods of marine salvage engineering. Mathematical models of ship stability and uprighting were developed to quantitatively evaluate the effects of wave encounter angle on the righting forces, bending moments and torques of the hull during the uprighting process. The results indicated that during the uprighting process, the maximum righting forces of the capsized ship were almost unchanged with a maximum difference of 1kN, when the ocean was calm or when the encounter angle of the waves varied. However, the righting force moment showed significant discrepancies under all conditions, with a maximum difference of 1177.5 kN m. When the wave encounter angle is at 0°, the shear force of some parts of the ship is 2–3 times that of the still water environment, and the shear force of some parts of the ship is 3–4 times that of the wave encounter angle at 300°. Remarkably, the bending moment varied by more than 200% at some particular locations under a particular wave encounter angle. Furthermore, the negative torque variation was relatively minor at a 300° wave encounter angle, and the uprighting process still needs relatively large righting forces.

Abstract:Ship collisions are the primary threat to traffic safety in the sea, which can seriously threaten human lives, the environment and material assets. Therefore, the detection and analyze of ship collision risks have important theoretical significance and application value. To improve maritime safety and efficiency, we propose a modeling, visualization and prediction framework to analyze ship collision risk. In particular, to fully consider the maneuverability of the ship, we introduce the quaternion ship domain (QSD) into the vessel conflict ranking operator (VCRO). In addition, to further analyze and better understand collision risk, the kernel density estimation (KDE) model is employed to visualize the ship collision risk. The ship collision risk usually contains underlying patterns and laws. Thus, we proposed a convolutional long short-term memory network (ConvLSTM) model, which can extract spatial–temporal features and predict spatial–temporal risk. Finally, to verify the reliability and robustness of the framework, we conducted extensive experiments on the automatic identification system (AIS) data of Chengshantou water. The results show that the framework demonstrates superiority in risk calculation, visualization and prediction. Theoretically, the framework proposed in this paper can serve maritime intelligent transportation system well.

Abstract:The theoretical method, or named the potential flow method, is most widely used in the research of maneuvering in waves. However, this approach used in previous studies is based on the assumption that maneuvering hydrodynamic derivatives in waves are the same as those in calm water. However, this assumption can be inaccurate, which makes the simulations different from the experimental results sometimes. Meanwhile, there are few experiments performed to investigate the hydrodynamic derivatives in waves considering the complexities of the experimental setup and data processing. There is even no systematic numerical simulation in this field. Considering the importance of the wave effect on the hydrodynamic derivatives and the advantages of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, in this study, the numerical simulations of the planar motion mechanism (PMM) tests on a containership S175 in regular waves are performed systematically for the first time. The hydrodynamic derivatives in waves of the target model are obtained by simulations in following waves, to be specific, the surf-riding condition. The surf-riding condition is chosen for separating the wave-induced component easily and researching the reason for the broaching-to phenomenon. The simulation results are validated by experimental data with satisfactory accuracy, which indicates the effectiveness of the numerical setup. The results reveal that the wave has a significant effect on hydrodynamic derivatives. The detailed changing trends and simulation methods of all hydrodynamic derivatives are proposed in this paper. Moreover, the course stability in waves is evaluated by the hydrodynamic derivatives in waves, which verifies the reason for the occurrence of the broaching-to phenomenon.

Abstract:In the paper,a six degrees of freedom mathematical model encompassing calm water maneuvering and traditional seakeeping theories is developed to simulate the ship maneuvering motion in random waves.The horizontal body axes system is used in this model.All the hydrodynamic forces and coefficients for maneuveriog are calculated by empirical formulates;and those for seakeeping except the second order wave forces are calculated in the time domain,in which the first order wave forces are the convolution of the impulse response function and the memory effects can be got by the convolution of the time-delay function;and for the second order wave forces,only the constant components are considered.Then,the numerical simulations of the turning motion of a container ship are performed in calm water,regular waves and random waves,the affections of the waves to the turning motion of the ship are also discussed.The results show that the effect of the first order wave forces on the ship maneuvering motion is not obvious and the second order wave forces must be taken into account when researching ship maneuvering motion in waves.
Numerical Simulation on Oblique Towing Tests and Pure Yaw Tests of a Containership in Surf-Riding Condition

Abstract:Maneuvering in waves is a complex and critical issue that confuses researchers for the last several decades. Among the existing methods for predicting the maneuverability in waves, the widely-used mathematical model approach (MMG model) is considered to be efficient and accurate in large wavelength and small wave steepness conditions. However, based on the assumption that the maneuvering forces in waves are the same as those in calm water, the wave effect on the hydrodynamic derivatives is neglected in most mathematical model approaches. According to the previous theoretical analysis and experimental data, this assumption is flawed. Therefore, several experiments and some numerical simulations have conducted to research the wave effect on hydrodynamic derivatives. In the present study, oblique towing tests and pure yaw tests will be simulated using the state-of-the-art CFD techniques to obtain the linear hydrodynamic derivatives in waves. The simulation cases in the present study are set according to previous PMM tests of S175 containership in surf-riding conditions. And the simulation results are in good agreement with experimental ones. Based on that, the wave effect on hydrodynamic derivatives is obtained and some discussions are made. Finally, the course stability of the containership on the different relative position of the wave are calculated to analyze the preliminary reason for the broaching-to phenomenon.
The large amplitude ship rolling and capsize under irregular wave excitation

Abstract:The large amplitude rolling is one of the main reasons leading to ship capsize, it is also a very complicated nonlinear problem. By analyzing nonlinear rolling motion of ship, the nonlinear differential equation of ship rolling motion has been established. The real waves are regarded as the outputs of the white noise by a filter which is introduced into the system. Under the theory of Markov process, the four-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation in time domain was solved by using the path integration method and the transition probability density of the ship rolling movement was obtained. The evolution process of ship capsize probability distribution with the time was achieved by using first passage theory. The results obtained are compared with the corresponding model tests results. It shows satisfactory. The results show that the path integration method is available to predict the distribution of the first passage time and provides valuable reference to the ship design and the safe standards.

Abstract:The motion response of a ship in a cross sea is studied based on computational fluid dynamics. Firstly, according to the established numerical pool, and based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the re-normalisation group K – ε turbulence model, the free surface is treated by the volume of fluid(VOF) method, and a numerical simulation method is established. The wave results obtained by the numerical simulation are compared with theoretical waves to verify the reliability of the method. Then, considering the DTMB5415 ship model, a prediction method for the ship's motion in a cross sea is established by using an overlapping mesh and VOF technology. The influence of a cross sea on ship motion performance under different wave direction angles, different wave heights and for different periods is analyzed. In addition, a method is also established for studying the ship's motion response based on potential flow theory, and it is found that ships sailing under superimposed waves will exhibit the phenomenon of beat vibration. Finally, by comparing the results obtained by the two methods, the consistency of the two methods is verified, which provides a strong basis for the safety assessment of ships in cross seas.

Abstract:A significant proportion of maritime incidents occurring in coastal waters are attributed to small fishing vessels. To analyze the root causes of such maritime accidents, it is imperative to conduct simulations to assess the potential pure loss of stability. This paper proposes a method of using a self-developed program to assess the vulnerability, which could be used in practice for seafarers to maintain shipping safety. To assess the vulnerability of three fishing vessels, the proposed method considers different wave conditions, where the parametric behaviors of the waves relative to the ship's position (ξG/λ) and wave steepness (H/λ) are explored. Additionally, vulnerability is computed systematically under diverse loading conditions, resulting in visual representations such as 2D and 3D plots. We conduct comparative simulations between the proposed method and the ICS-Hydro STAB. The simulation results reveal that the proposed method has superior accuracy in executing failure probability calculations. The prediction error is consistently below 5%.
